Deer Tick
Deer tick

Saturday night at Terminal 5, Dr. Dog played the 9th the NYC show of their 2010 tour, and the final show before they leave for Europe next week. Their enthusiasm was matched by their equally excited fans who seemed to applaud louder and louder with each finishing song.

Deer Tick took the stage around 9:15. Dressed in full drag, including black eye shadow and red lipstick on lead singer John Mccauley. They were greeted by a roaring audience, with Mccauley mentioning that it was the band's 47th day on the road, and their last show before returning home to Rhode Island. They opened their set with "Easy", the first single from last year's release, Born on Flag Day. Following "Easy", Mccauley announced, "This next song is one I wrote when I was just 18 years old." and proceeded to play "Baltimore Blues No. 1" as the audience cheered excitedly, recognizing the song by the time Mccauley had played the first few chords. Borrowing songs from older albums, new ones from their upcoming album (which will be released on June 8th), and even covering a Buckcherry Chuck Berry song, Deer Tick played for a little over half an hour. One fan described the performance, stating "[John Mccauley's] grimey voice has grown in harmony." As a final hurrah during their set, Mccauley planted a sloppy kiss on the lips of lead guitarist Ian O'Neil, formerly of Titus Andronicus.

By 10 p.m. the massive venue was packed wall to wall with fans. Around 10:15, the members of Dr. Dog slowly appeared on stage while audience members screamed and threw their hands in the air. Following their third song, the hundreds and hundreds of people in the audience all began chanting the band's name. Halfway through the set, Toby Leaman took a cue from Deer Tick's performance and donned a long dress-like, red cloak, saying, "I feel human for the first time." The band finished their set at 11:35. Five minutes later, they returned for a 15 minute encore during which one guy got on stage with a bouquet of roses and proposed to his girlfriend. By 12 a.m. the show was over and fans began pouring out of Terminal 5, happily commenting on the night's fantastic performances.

The bass player of Dr. Dog is hot.

So disappointed that deer tick played such a short set. I was told that the night before they played a 15 song set over an hour long. Other than that they sounded great. Dr. Dog was awesome too. Not crazy about terminal 5.

deer tick didn't actually play a buckcherry cover. they covered "maybelline" by chuck berry. the lead singer said buckcherry as a joke...

Correction: Deer Tick didn't cover Buckcherry, they covered Chuck Berry's "Maybellene," and it was great.

This show was incredible!

Deer Tick also did a cover of Cheap Sunglassess at the end of the set.

Both bands were really good....

Man, those dresses are hilarious. Great idea. Super funny and cool. Wonder if Kurt Cobain has rolled over yet?

They played the entire new album, which I don't love, and a handful of Fate songs. And I was blown away. Dr. Dog is a genius live band, that I want to see again.

"the 100s and 100s of people there" shouldnt' there have been 1,000s of people there at Terminal 5?

Was this show sparsely attended?

They ruled at Brooklyn Bowl.

Posted by Anonymous | May 17, 2010 1:28 PM

Posted by Anonymous | May 17, 2010 2:22 PM

Andy tried to rap on stage too much, that is why

Is there any venue in NYC that gets consistently over-sold the way Terminal 5 does? That place is the fucking worst.

Posted by mark | May 17, 2010 6:29 PM

LCD is going to be a fucking shitshow.

Posted by Anonymous | May 17, 2010 6:39 PM

show was sold-out. "shoulda known better" is actually "Someday" from the new album

Posted by Anonymous | May 17, 2010 10:34 PM

Terminal 5 was actually the 26th show of the tour...

Posted by forrest | May 18, 2010 12:17 AM

Dog's setlist included 3 more songs. After The Breeze, they rocked out The Girl, then they played Later, after that they played The Way The Lazy Do. I can't believe that one was missing! Then they ended the first set with Shame Shame. Also, they played the song Fat Dog in the encore just after Jackie Wants A Black Eye. And, that was the song during which that dude proposed to his girl. Amazing Show! I've seen them four times, one time in Europe, and they fucking kill it every time!

Deer Tick was great, Dr. Dog was good. Terminal 5 is awful, way too big for a show like this. The crowd was terrible. They were obviously a Dr. Dog crowd, Tickheads are much more considerate. Can't wait to see both bands again at a better venue

they played the girl after the breeze
