After opening sets by Grooms and Class Actress, Holly Miranda headlined her own show at Bowery Ballroom in NYC last night (5/27). Her setlist included covers of Yoko Ono and Etta James, and a Jealous Girlfriends song (her old band). There was a horn section consisting of Michael Irwin (trumpet) and Maria Eisen (sax) of the Woes, and a lot of other special guests on stage before the encore. She and TV on the Radio's Kyp Malone aka Rain Machine performed a duet, and then there was a sing-along in support of equal marriage rights for everyone. Guests on stage for the group number, in addition to Holly's band, included Kyp, Nicole Atkins, Scott Matthew, Ellie Everdell of The Hundred In The Hands, Billy McCarthey and Eric Sanderson of Pela (rip), French singer-songwriter Soko, Brendan Coon (co-writer of Holly's song "Forest Green, Oh Forest Green"), Sharron Sulami of Pink Noise, Holly's friend and tour manager Raimy Rosenduft, and Celebrate Brooklyn's Nadine Goellner.

foul looking is a compliment for her.

The Etta James cover with the horn section was absolutely amazing. One of the best single performances I've seen all year.

will you sexist idiots shut up

Posted by Anonymous | May 27, 2010 2:23 PM

what's sexist about saying she's fowl looking?

you should read some of the dave longstreth threads...

Posted by anonymous | May 27, 2010 2:39 PM

You do realize you're saying she looks like a bird, right?

Some photographer from the opposite side of stage was taking a LOT of flash pics, so I am assuming whoever she was, that she got some good pics too. Does BV send more than one fotag to cover an event?

Posted by Anonymous | May 27, 2010 2:54 PM

Yes. That is one ugly bird.

on top of being physically repulsive, the class actress record is terrible.
0 for 2.

Posted by Anonymous | May 27, 2010 3:11 PM

hey, i'm as aesthetically repulsed as the next guy by this broad's physical appearance but i think the record is pretty dece. Careful What You Say & Adolescent Heart are good tracks.

Posted by anonymous | May 27, 2010 3:42 PM

record is awful. she's awful. end of story. can't wait until she disappears.

Posted by Anonymous | May 27, 2010 5:31 PM

2:54 - Just because someone is taking flash pics, doesn't mean they're any good. In fact, it's generally safe to assume the opposite.

Why no picture of Grooms?!

Posted by Anonymous | May 29, 2010 1:49 PM

2:54 & 7:00, I was standing right next to that girl with the flash, she said she was just shooting for herself, with a 35mm. I agree with you 7:00... Definitely a little obnoxious, I'll take my long-exposure "artsy" photos over washed out flash ones any day. Not to mention the musicians having to play an instrument with a flash(that was a really powerful flash) going off in your face all the time.

Oh, I thought Class Actress was pretty good!

Well written article and nice pictures by the way.

Hmm... Whuile intersting, this has NOTHING to do with Yoko Kanno.

Why was it on her main page?
