The National on WNYC's Soundcheck

The National's Brooklyn Academy of Music show on May 15th will be going on presale tomorrow (May 6th) at 10am. Tickets are here (pw: "VIOLET"). They go on general sale through BAM May 7th at 10am. Apparently you don't actually need a ZYNC card to get the tickets. You can also try to win your way in (and get flights and a hotel) through KEXP and via KCRW.
The show is a benefit for the Red Hot Organization (which the Dark Was the Night project also supported) and will be filmed by Don't Look Back D.A. Pennebaker and Chris Hegedus for an Internet simulcast on YouTube.
The National recently appeared on WNYC's Soundcheck, and videos of their performance on that show are posted below...

Holy shit! Pavement just added a Bowery show. Too bad for those suckers who got tix for Central Park.

yes, $25.

in case anyone is confused, it seems that the tickets went on sale by accident when that link above first became active. They're not actually supposed to be on sale until tomorrow.

There the singer goes falling asleep again! ZZzzzzzzzzz. At least it's a warning to potential listeners.

That pavement tix link is a dirty, dirty trick. Side effects include eye and ear bleeding. You've been warned.

I've gotta say, "zzzz" guy gets funnier and funnier every time he posts in a National thread. I hear he's working on a novel

the best part from the soundcheck show was when he called the album 'high society'. I'm trying to decide if it's worth it to get tickets since I'm already going to the RC and park shows...

it says "The Pit is General Admission Standing". hmmm... i was not aware this was possible at BAM, cool. at their last shows there Matt seemed a little weirded out by the seats
Posted by Anonymous | May 5, 2010 3:21 PM
Yeah there is standing room by the stage. During the Antlers set at the Sounds Like Brooklyn festival in Feb, a score of pan-faced hipsters robotically flooded the pit after receiving permission from the security guard, and then stood there robotically.

It seems that Thomas Bartlett (Doveman) is not playing anymore in the band. He was the young man playing the piano, keyboards, and doing his computer stuff in the background. The new piano player is very talented too, but I will miss the good taste and more sonic textures that creative Doveman was always adding to every song.
Soundcheck?
This seem to be a radio program called "Soundcheck". Well, maybe what they really meant with this name was something like "don't take our program seriously because this is just a soundcheck." The sound -at least what you can hear in the video- is so bad that I cannot find another explanation. They have everything: a nice room, proper equipment, a quiet and attentive audience, and well, the result is so bad.
This is just one more example of a wasted opportunity to audiovisually document music well. In my opinion most of the people who are filming music these days are missing the opportunity. Today the music is better than ever before and they are not doing a good job.
You can compare the mediocre sound in this video with this one shot by Ray Conception at Whitney Museum last year. This is the result when you love the music and you understand it. He was filming from the audience, with one camera and no help. Check by yourself:

Has anyone actually seen a link to purchase tickets?
Posted by Brett | May 6, 2010 10:05 AM
gotta click on the BAM link, yall, I just got 3
Posted by Anonymous | May 6, 2010 10:06 AM
The BAM link does not have tickets on sale.
http://www.bam.org/thenational
Is that what you're referring to? It says they're on sale at 10am but no link.

this is a letdown
Posted by Anonymous | May 6, 2010 10:07 AM
this is a letdown. Im gonna go out on a limb and say the presale tics were probably all sold yesterday, during that glitch period.
Posted by Anonymous | May 6, 2010 10:08 AM
There's no way to buy on BAM. And why does BV have the BAM onsale on 5/7 when the site says 5/6?
The many ways that ticket sales for concerts get completely mangled never ceases to amaze.

"No inventory available"
Bell House horseshit all over again. Fuck this.
Posted by Anonymous | May 6, 2010 10:12 AM
link became active finally, and no tics are available. lamers.
Posted by Anonymous | May 6, 2010 10:13 AM
Just spoke to BAM they sold "6"tix earlier today. WTF?? They say try back tomorrow...
Posted by Anonymous | May 6, 2010 10:13 AM
Unavailable tix... (sigh)
Ah well.
Posted by Burg | May 6, 2010 10:14 AM
The National is really bad at this shit.
Posted by Anonymous | May 6, 2010 10:15 AM
Etix link started working at 10.05. Got 2
Posted by Anonymous | May 6, 2010 10:15 AM
Bell House was a fiasco for me and it never worked. This went smooth. Luck of the draw I guess. Worked for my friend too but we only needed one of us to score.
However it should be noted that at the time this post was put up yesterday, the BAM link was inactive. Then as of last night, the BAM release date was 5/6, not 5/7. So it was better to go through BAM. That first link seemed to be a dud.
Posted by Anonymous | May 6, 2010 10:17 AM
was only able to get one tik on the event.etix website after the link became active around 10:10. this whole time i was also on hold with the BAM ticket office, and when i finally spoke to an ticket agent around 10:12, she said it was completely sold out, and that there is not a pit. she didn't seem to know about the event.etix site.
Posted by Anonymous | May 6, 2010 10:18 AM
Tickets did go on sale at the pre-sale link b/c it now says "No Inventory Currently Available".
If you try to purchase via BAM's website, you get the following message: "Although tickets are on sale, this performance of The National is currently not available online. Please contact BAM Ticket Services"
I talked to someone in the ticket office who said tickets did go on sale via BAM's website this morning and are sold out, but more tickets may become available & to check back.
Posted by Brett | May 6, 2010 10:22 AM
The woman I just spoke to at BAM said "no public onsale tomorrow - completely sold out". But to "try again tomorrow". Great. Helpful.
In the e-mail the National sent yesterday, it said "general public onsale begins May 7th at 10am through BAM's website". So is that bullshit or does this BAM employee just have no clue?
Posted by Anonymous | May 6, 2010 10:25 AM
Shouldn't we all be going to the Crash Test Dummies show that night anyway?
Posted by Anonymous | May 6, 2010 10:26 AM
So pissed.
Posted by Anonymous | May 6, 2010 10:27 AM
hahah got two the 6! row K though...beggars can't be choosers. But yeah, I had to call BAM.
Posted by baby genius | May 6, 2010 10:28 AM
I nabbed two tix through the BAM website just now.
Posted by Anonymous | May 6, 2010 10:30 AM
The operators at BAM are saying it's 100% sold out. No public sale tomorrow.
Posted by Anonymous | May 6, 2010 10:38 AM
did the refresh thing and got 2 (orch center row S) a little after 10 from the BAM site.
not to gloat, just providing info...
Posted by Anonymous | May 6, 2010 10:39 AM
Pulling singles on the etix thing every once in a while. Keep throwing em back bc i need more.
Posted by Anonymous | May 6, 2010 10:42 AM
Why send an e-mail to newsletter subscribers with a link to buy tickets that wasn't even the RIGHT FUCKING LINK? What is that about? Yes, there was a link to the BAM site too, but it VERY CLEARLY stated tickets go onsale today at 10am from the etix link. I am really fucking pissed off. First the Bell House and now this.
Posted by Anonymous | May 6, 2010 10:43 AM
I got 8 tickets!!! Four yesterday in row n. Thought I'd try my luck for better seats today, and got four in row h!! I'll be selling the extra four on craigslist for face, so keep a lookout for it.
Posted by Anonymous | May 6, 2010 10:55 AM
@10:55 How are you going to sell them if they're all will call?
Posted by Anonymous | May 6, 2010 10:57 AM
@10:57 You get the person's money and then walk them into the show. A peaceful process in most cases.
Posted by Anonymous | May 6, 2010 11:04 AM
got to the point where i could pick the amount of tickets and section but then i got turned back
Posted by Anonymous | May 6, 2010 11:23 AM
just called the BAM ticket office, woman said the pre-sale is finished and she's not sure if it's sold out. fan-fucking-tastic.
she also sounded frustrated and kept cutting me off when i tried asking her when they'll go on regular sale.. i think a lot of ppl are calling with the same problem
