The Black Keys doubled in size @ MSG (pic by rossmckillop)
Black Keys

"Auerbach and Carney, who used to tour as a duo, will be joined by some extra players for the first time.

"We might bring out a couple of people to play a few of songs with us," he said. "The majority of the set will still be two-piece, but [we'll] have a couple of guys come out because we really like a lot of the arrangements on the record and it would be fun to be able to do those live instead of having to strip down. We've got two guys who helped us with the live Blakroc stuff, and we became friends with. Leon Michels, a keyboardist and Nick Movshon on bass -- they're pretty tight." [express night out] (via)

Was Eddie Vedder @ PiL one night earlier in Brooklyn? (pic by Jonathan Bayer)
Eddie Vedder

The Black Keys (with four members) opened for Pearl Jam (with Eddie Vedder in a Public Image Ltd t-shirt) at MSG last night (5/20). It was Pearl Jam's 1st of 2 shows in a row at the NYC venue. The next is tonight, Friday, 5/21, but with Band of Horses opening instead (maybe The Black Keys will go check out Macgruber). The Black Keys, who also played a Microsoft Kin show in NYC the other day, played a benefit at Housing Works bookstore one night before MSG. Videos and setlists from both shows (for both bands) below...

I think PJ was at the PIL show in DC at the 9:30 club.

Posted by Anonymous | May 21, 2010 7:20 AM

After seeing night 1's setlist, you know Pearl Jam are going to tear the fucking roof off tonight. I heard Neil Young is in town. Just saying..............................

Posted by Anonymous | May 21, 2010 9:05 AM

Pearl Jam is the best band in the world today... easily.

Posted by Venkman | May 21, 2010 9:10 AM

dude....it's "PLAY LEASH YOU PUSSIES!!!!" - Eddie, MSG #2, 2003.

Posted by Anonymous | May 21, 2010 9:13 AM

This band blew 20 years ago and they blow today. Commercially created grunge rock. I love how throughout his career Vedder tries to latch onto legitimate bands, whether through wearing a PiL shirt or playing Johnny Ramone's puppy dog. Meanwhile, this band has alway sounded like some crap combination of the Eagles and Neil Young with a healthy does of that artificial 90's "we're sincere and wear our hearts on our sleeves cause we're deep, man" vibe.

Posted by Anonymous | May 21, 2010 9:27 AM

This band needs to hang it up. The 90's have been over for a while.

Posted by Anonymous | May 21, 2010 9:33 AM

does anybody know at what time it started/ended
we have to make it from philly after work :(

Posted by M | May 21, 2010 9:44 AM

@ 927 & 933

Go fuck yourselves, and I'd like to hear what your song catalog sounds like.

Posted by Funderburgh | May 21, 2010 9:45 AM

9:33 that is the stupidest thing I heard in awhile. How many bands are touring from the 60's, 70's, 80's, 90's and the 00's! Pearl Jam still puts on a great live show and the new stuff ain't bad either.

Posted by Anonymous | May 21, 2010 9:45 AM

fuk off-pearl jam live is one of the best acts to see hands down, and im not even a huge fan

Posted by Anonymous | May 21, 2010 9:47 AM

The Keys killed it at Housing Works!

Posted by Anonymous | May 21, 2010 9:47 AM

As a guy who's seen them 50 times...Pearl Jam has nothing left but nostalgia.

Posted by Anonymous | May 21, 2010 9:51 AM

@ 9:33....Does the same go for Swans, Superchunk, Unrest, Pavement, Breeders and all of the rest of the "90's bands" that will be playing shows this year? You are a total F--king idiot! Seriously, go listen to Dan Deacon or an animal/ cave-themed band.

Posted by Anonymous | May 21, 2010 9:52 AM

Hey 9:52 - Go play in traffic!!!!!!!

Posted by Anonymous | May 21, 2010 10:01 AM

pj's publicist posts here: true stry

Posted by Anonymous | May 21, 2010 10:02 AM

Go back to Ohio!

Posted by Anonymous | May 21, 2010 10:06 AM

Seriously, they are the best live band around still. They have an amazing catalog and sound as good now as they did in the 90s. I love how the idiot at 9:27 talks about pearl jam "latching on" to legitimate bands... Are you fucking retarded? You really really think that either the Ramones or PiL is a better band than Pearl Jam? Each member of PJ has more talent in their pinkies than any of those bands had. These guys are just punk rock fans - get over yourself 9:27 you whiney douche. Go listen to your Memory Tapes album.

Posted by Anonymous | May 21, 2010 10:13 AM

9:52 Wow, HAHAHAHAHA!!!

10:01 hey nitwit, what are you actually offended by here?

Posted by Anonymous | May 21, 2010 10:14 AM

Yo 9:52 - classic!

Posted by Anonymous | May 21, 2010 10:15 AM

PJ has a few good songs, but I've always found them to be pretty boring on the whole. certainly not in the same league as early to mid stones, bowie, roxy music, lou reed, wire, ramones, or PiL to name a few.

Posted by Anonymous | May 21, 2010 10:29 AM

Hey 9:27.... If you're going to bash someone for not being 'indie' or 'punk' enough, you should get your facts straight. It's JOEY Ramone.
'Johnny Ramone' is the guy that wrote 'Counting Crows Suck' on your backpack for you in 8th grade.

Posted by Anonymous | May 21, 2010 10:41 AM

LETS SEE WHAT SONGS YOU EVER WROTE!!1!1

Worst comeback ever.

Posted by Anonymous | May 21, 2010 11:11 AM

Would have loved the Housing Works setlist last night, although The Black Keys were on fire.

Posted by Anonymous | May 21, 2010 11:16 AM

PJ went on at about 8:50ish... enjoy! (you will)

Posted by Anonymous | May 21, 2010 11:18 AM

10:01
Moron much?

Posted by Anonymous | May 21, 2010 11:20 AM

I don't like PJ, but to say...
"This band needs to hang it up. The 90's have been over for a while."

YOU ARE SUCH A FOOL!

Posted by Anonymous | May 21, 2010 11:23 AM

Did 10:13 really say that PJ is better than the Ramones!!? Crazy talk!

Posted by Anonymous | May 21, 2010 11:32 AM

PJ killed it last night, black keys were solid too...screw the haters

Posted by Anonymous | May 21, 2010 11:37 AM

Pil is infinitely better than PJ. It's not even close. Ramones invented punk rock. nuff said.

Posted by Anonymous | May 21, 2010 11:40 AM

Neil Young is in Worcester MA tonight, not NYC

Posted by Anonymous | May 21, 2010 11:58 AM

Ramones were pioneers...granted. But a better band??? they played 3 chords and wrote catchy song.Hats off to them but, really? they even knew they couldnt play their instruments. JOHNNY RAMONE!!!!!!-nice name drop brah-eat sh*t

Posted by Anonymous | May 21, 2010 12:03 PM

what time did PJ go on??

Posted by Anonymous | May 21, 2010 12:06 PM

They went on a little after 9 and played until 11:25 or so.

Posted by Anonymous | May 21, 2010 12:10 PM

^ PJ went on at 8:40 last night.

Posted by Anonymous | May 21, 2010 12:11 PM

never said PJ sucked. they just don't do it for me. Ramones are more than just a "musical" act.they represent a break from everything that came before them.

Posted by Anonymous | May 21, 2010 12:29 PM

^ neither of you are right, it was exactly 8:50, same as their previous four shows.

Posted by Funderburgh | May 21, 2010 12:30 PM

^ They went on at 8:56 actually.

Posted by Anonymous | May 21, 2010 12:30 PM

Vedder is a carpetbagger punk rocker of the worst order. Always name dropping punk bands, donning cool tshirts and speaking about corporate greed and class issues etc. then apes it up for Target and Starbucks comps. His persona is about as sincere as the republican party. Oh and there is no reason ever, to blow Bono.

Posted by Jeremy | May 21, 2010 1:00 PM

oh boy i love seeing Pearl Jam haters froth at the mouth...

Posted by Anonymous | May 21, 2010 1:25 PM

omg e.v. is so hot

Posted by Anonymous | May 21, 2010 1:26 PM

The videos from the Black Keys Bookstore show were taken by me. I'm adding Next Girl and 10 AM Automatic today.

Posted by Patrick | May 21, 2010 2:39 PM

Remember when they refused to play 'Breath' for like 10 years? Great song. It's def being played tonight.

Posted by Anonymous | May 21, 2010 4:04 PM

I didn't go to the show tonight, and it's not even over, but I know for a fact that it's the worst show ever.

If you disagree with me - you are obviously a complete and total loser that knows nothing about music. This is the complete and absolute final word and cannot be disputed.

Super Music Dictator.

Posted by Anonymous | May 21, 2010 9:29 PM

Went to last night's show. PJ tore it up. They even played Sweet Lew and Push Me, Pull Me which were both great surprises. They never disappoint.

By the way, what's the point of making a comment if you don't even like Pearl Jam?

Posted by AB | May 22, 2010 10:56 AM

I'll wait for Springsteen

Posted by Anonymous | May 22, 2010 11:47 PM

COUNTING CROWS, BLACK CROWS, CAMERON CROW all SUCK! FUCK ALL CROWS!!! bunch of corn stealing fucking big mouths

Posted by Anonymous | May 22, 2010 11:50 PM

Siamese Dream and Mellon Collie were really good albums. Got them when they came out, still throw them on at times and think they're great. It saddens me when I hear bands from that era when I was a teenager and hear their new stuff and it's so clear how they've lost it, they sound desperate to recapture a sound/magic that they haven't had in 15 years (holy shit).... And then I realize that is not unlike a lot of us.
