Empire of the Sun

I'm only sort of kidding. Empire of the Sun have added a 2nd show at NYC's Terminal 5, part of a handful of shows the Australian electronic music duo is playing as part of a short US tour that includes Lollapalooza. Tickets are on sale for both (well, the new one is still only on AmEx presale).

what happened to the toronto show?

Posted by lukesteele | May 13, 2010 3:12 PM

soooo is T5 the new NYC venue where you plot bands who are supposed to be "amazing" and have everyone get fooled by the maze of levels and bad sound that said artists can actually perform live too?

it's like it's own marketing scheme.

overpriced drinks, tickets, bad location..etc.

ohh kids. eat it up.
it'll be closed in 4-5 years.

...from your lips to God's ears.

won't be soon enough...

They aren't playing 2 nights now. The Monday one on the 9th of August was moved to Sunday, August 8

I've never seen the first T5 show on sale on Ticketmaster. Whenever I clicked on the link on the T5 (Bowery) website, it always said the event no longer exists in the database. Now it's supposed to be sold out and a second show has been added? I still don't see the first show on Ticketmaster. Has anyone bought a ticket for the first show? If anyone can shed a light, I'd appreciate it.

isn't this the singer from the defunct Sleepy Jackson?

Posted by Anonymous | May 13, 2010 3:48 PM

Yeah, Luke Steele from Sleepy Jackson.

The "Tickets" link above takes you to the Ticketmaster page with both shows on sale - Aug 8 and Aug 9.

Both shows will end up selling out.

R.I.P. Sleepy Jackson. This band looks absurd...but that song is catchy.

Posted by Anonymous | May 13, 2010 3:56 PM

If that's the case, it's really weird, because I only see the 8/8 show when I follow the link.

iv seen them before! quite good they'll shake t5 up

A pretty good JG Ballard book; a not-so-great Spielberg movie (with a young Christian Bale!).

These guys are wild! Their album cover looks like rejected Dune concept art!

I think Nick Littlemore's work with Pnau is less abrasive than Empire, but this is still solid Australian electronic rock, and the song "Walking On A Dream" fits with whatever mood I'm in. Go with the weirdness.

First with the little punk rock "joke" now this. BrooklynVegan bro is a regular Billy Crystal. Everyone is a fuckin comedian these days.

I'm not your bro....

how come no one is pointing out that they are complete mgmt rip off? can someone please point that out? please? come on!

Posted by Anonymous | May 13, 2010 4:52 PM

luke steele has been out there well before mgmt. that's his voice and his songwriting. nothing he can do about it. this said, both bands are kinda crappy.

I HATE terminal 5. would prob go see these guys if they were playing anywhere else in the city. same with Massive Attack a few nights ago.

People please chill the fuck out...this is going to be a SHAM...Did Sleepy Jackson ever do something even remotely dancey? No...as 4:06 pointed out the other half of Empire, Nick Littlemore brought the dance sound to this project as his previous band PNAU were much more in line w this than Sleepy Jackson.

The kicker here is NICK LITTLEMORE QUIT EMPIRE OF THE SUN leaving nutjob Luke Steele w the band. This will be a joke. Luke calling himself Emperor Steele now? I guess he is gonna milk the cow for all it's worth before people realize the really talented one left the group months ago.

I really liked the twangier stuff Sleepy Jackson did. Miniskirt is a great tune.

I wonder how much the Windish Agency makes a year off of Terminal 5...

The ectasy must be pretty good in Australia

Posted by Anonymous | May 14, 2010 8:00 AM

It's a shame Sleepy Jackson never made it

Empire of the Sun AKA Aussie MGMT is worse than American MGMT.

Posted by Anonymous | May 14, 2010 10:20 AM

how about: who are all these shit metal bands you keep posting about?

Posted by Anonymous | May 14, 2010 11:04 AM

the best movie Steven Spielberg has ever made?

Posted by Anonymous | May 14, 2010 3:25 PM

Siamese Dream and Mellon Collie were really good albums. Got them when they came out, still throw them on at times and think they're great. It saddens me when I hear bands from that era when I was a teenager and hear their new stuff and it's so clear how they've lost it, they sound desperate to recapture a sound/magic that they haven't had in 15 years (holy shit).... And then I realize that is not unlike a lot of us.

Yeah, Empire manages to bring back a sound no one has in a while. MGMT doesn't. Though I like both bands, I like Empire more.

Nick Littlemore brings tha dance part and that special sound. He also wrote the lyrics. Luke Steele wrote the melodies and fitted the lyrics to them.

Both are reapply talented people, just Nick's talent shows more in Empire. But Luke's voice- to die for. He has such a ling range for high and low, and he knows exactly how to use it. His falsettos I think are better than Philip Bailey (from Earth Wind and Fire).
