A Tribe Called Quest at Knit (more by Benjamin Lozovsky)
A Tribe Called Quest

With these new additions, Rock The Bells 2010 has upped the ante on an already great festival:

JUST ADDED TO THE EPIC ROCK THE BELLS LINEUP:
SNOOP DOGG performing Doggystyle
A TRIBE CALLED QUEST performing Midnight Marauders
DJ PREMIER performing a Tribute to Gang Starr
& VERY SPECIAL GUEST: MS. LAURYN HILL
Say what you will about live hip hop, but A Tribe Called Quest has tons of energy live... and Midnight Marauders in it's entirety! No word on whether Consequence (who wasn't officially a member at the time of the LP), Jarobi (who was somewhat inactive by that point), or Large Professor/Trugoy/Busta Rhymes/Raphael Saadiq (who all guested on the LP) will be on hand.

Los Angeles is the only date so far that will NOT get Snoop Dogg's Doggystyle treatment, which also means a no-go to the classic Chronic era crew who will appear at the other dates with Snoop. That includes Warren G, Tha Dogg Pound, Lady of Rage and RBX, but oddly no Nate Dogg?

No word on what kind of set Hill will have (acoustic probably?) or exactly what "a unique tribute to Gang Starr" means, but hopefully the latter will be more than just the man spinning (poorly, I might add) his classics whilst shouting over them (like he did at Brooklyn Hip Hop Festival 2009). Fingers crossed for Jeru The Damaja, Group Home, Nice & Smooth, and the extended Gang Starr fam.

Tickets go on presale for the LA and NYC dates on Friday (6/11) from 10AM to 10PM via Ticketfly, the presale code is CLASSIC. Tickets go on regular sale the next day at 10AM.

How much is it going to be?

this sounds great in theory, but after all these years and knowing how live rap shows translate, i will gladly live with the album versions and my memories. this will be a massive disappointment, imo.

I know that this is not the most hip-hop friendly website, but the idea that DJ Premier somehow spins "poorly" is just ridiculous.

I dont know what type of DJs you like (e.g., the Rub - which is great in its own right but a very different animal), if any, but you statement completely undermines your credibility on this topic.

Whether DJ premier is the best DJ on the planet is a very different question from whether the man spins poorly. I just dont understand how you can make such a statement with a straight face.

@Brent

This isnt really public knowledge, but I have been a working hip hop DJ for 10+ years. My tastes tended to skew on the Rich Medina/Bobbito/5th Platoon/ etc etc side of things. Party rockers who blend well and use tricks tastefully.

As a fan, I have seen Preemo spin/trainwreck numerous times... I gave up going to see him, but have seen him in the past few years at a few of his APT gigs, and at the Brooklyn Hip Hop Festival as well.

I am a huge fan of Premier, and he is one of the best producers in the history of the hip hop game, but a top notch DJ he is not. IMO.

Thanks for reading!

EPIC in theory, hopefully EPIC in delivery too!

gotta be at least $100 a pop

Posted by Anonymous | June 9, 2010 12:11 PM

why cant ATCQ do low end theory instead of midnight merauders? not complaining but im just sayin. also, when is the trend of artists performing entire albums gonna end? at this point it just seems like a cash in thing rather than a celebration of the album. either way, i would indeed love to see tribe again.

At least Snoop isnt performing his pother albums in their entirety. Pretty much everything in his catalogue that came after Doggystyle.

Posted by Heavy Street | June 9, 2010 1:04 PM

Reason for no nate dogg is that he suffered a series of strokes. Not fit to perform.

Posted by Anonymous | June 9, 2010 1:04 PM

why not add redman and have him do 'whut thee album'? or pharcyde to have them do bizarre ride...? that'd be dope.

Lauryn Hill acoustic? I think that was like 10 years ago check out her latest performances she is hardcore hip hop!!!

Posted by Anonymous | June 9, 2010 6:06 PM

DJ Premier didn't die. Guru did. THis show is going to be sick.

Siamese Dream and Mellon Collie were really good albums. Got them when they came out, still throw them on at times and think they're great. It saddens me when I hear bands from that era when I was a teenager and hear their new stuff and it's so clear how they've lost it, they sound desperate to recapture a sound/magic that they haven't had in 15 years (holy shit).... And then I realize that is not unlike a lot of us.

you dave haters can go fuck yourselves. bonnaroo 2010 was 4 of the best days of my life. the DMB and JayZ headliners at the main stage were two of the best shows I've ever seen, musically and production speaking. 2011 'roo is going to be amazing. Phish headlining?

they also played at a place called Tramps in april '99 losers. with qotsa. where were you? you guys sound pretty angry? go listen to something hip. whatever the fuck you think that is. why does james iha need to be in the band for them to be good? that makes no sense. so the band changed lineups. oh well.

Now that is a great line up and show. I can't believe I missed it! I hope they have a similar show this year. I know I definitely won't miss it.
