Katrina and the Waves

Walking on Sunshine contains such absolutely brilliant songs as “Going Down to Liverpool” (cleverly covered by the Bangles, who could spot a tune worth singing) and the infectious title track. Guarantee: hear this record once and you’ll find yourself humming at least one track from it a week later. It flows magnificently from start to end, and subsumes individual accomplishments into a true group effort. A greatest hits album the first time out. [The Trouser Press Record Guide]

The first track we released from our EP of Katrina and the Waves covers was Sam Amdion‘s spare take on their megahit “Walking on Sunshine” — which celebrated its 25th Anniversary last week and is the reason we teamed with Primary Wave Music for this whole project. Now on the other end of the spectrum we give you Fucked Up‘s slightly less gentle (but no less awesome) take on the same song. It’s alternatively called “Crooked Sunshine” due to their mixing parts of their own song “Crooked Head” into the mix. You can download it at the top of this post and here’s the tracklisting for Sun Salute so far:

1. Sam Amidon – Walking on Sunshine
2. Deer Tick – Sun Street
3. Fucked Up – Walking on Sunshine
4. tUnE-YarDs – I Really Taught Me To Watusi
5. ???

Track #5 is coming soon.

If you’d like to hear the originals, you can stream them all at the bottom of this post, along with some select other tracks. I hope this EP, where you get to hear “Walking on Sunshine” in other forms, as well as lesser known KATW songs, shows off the songwriting talents of Kimberly Rew (who was in the Soft Boys with Robyn Hitchcock before forming The Waves). I think he’s one of the ’80s great, unheralded pop songwriters. Sure, “Walking on Sunshine” was a huge joyous smash,  but the album it’s from has nine more songs just as good, some, like the aforementioned “Going Down to Liverpool”, maybe even better. Like the Trouser Press said, it’s all hits.

Maybe Fucked Up will play “Walking on Sunshine” when they play the MetroPCS Stage at Greenpoint’s Newtown Barge Park on June 26 as part of the Northside Festival.  It’s an outdoor show – what better place for a song like that? Also playing that show are Liars and High Places — tickets are still on sale (and you can use a Northside Badge to get in).

Fucked Up, who just played in a Toronto library, also play a few other festivals this summer and those dates are at the bottom of this post with the “Crooked Head” video…
