Alien Lanes

Matador's 21st birthday fest will be happening in Las Vegas October 1st-3rd. For it, they've pulled the cream of the indie-rock crop. Previously speculated headliners Belle & Sebastian and Pavement will be there - on top of that, Guided By Voices will be reuniting to play, "in the band's "classic '93-'96 lineup!" The most recent show for GBV was New Year's Eve 2004/05.

In addition to those three, the lineup includes Sonic Youth, Spoon, Yo La Tengo, Cat Power, Jon Spencer Blues Explosion, New Pornographers, Superchunk, Ted Leo & the Pharmacists, Guitar Wolf (who also play NY), Chavez, Girls, Fucked Up, Harlem, Cold Cave, Shearwater, Kurt Vile and Jeffrey Joe Jenson. More will be annonuced July 5th.

A flyer is below...

Matador will be celebrating the label’s 21st anniversary this October and this much we can finally confirm : there will be 3 nights of shows starting Friday October 1, and concluding Sunday October 3 at the Palms Casino & Resort In Las Vegas, NV. We’ll be dropping further hints about the amazing lineup in the days ahead, but a final announcement and information about how to purchase tickets will be made here at the trusty Matablog on July 5.

Nice!

Posted by Anonymous | June 29, 2010 3:49 PM

Jeffrey Joe Jensen! I'm totally there!

Posted by Anonymous | June 29, 2010 3:50 PM

Great lineup. Too bad it is in Las Vegas.

Posted by Anonymous | June 29, 2010 3:51 PM

3:12 p.m. - Man, I want to sell my atp tickets a go to this instead.

How many do you have, and do they include rooms at Kutshers? If so, I'm interested.

Posted by Anonymous | June 29, 2010 3:51 PM

Great lineup...and CHAVEZ!!

Posted by Hank | June 29, 2010 3:52 PM

why is that not in NYC? Come on, Matador has been a NY label forever, we should get this show!!

Posted by Anonymous | June 29, 2010 3:52 PM

I thought Vegas was only for Tom Jones...

Posted by Anonymous | June 29, 2010 4:01 PM

@3:52 Uh...You apparently have never been to Vegas.

Posted by Anonymous | June 29, 2010 4:02 PM

@4:02. Yeah, everyone has been to Vegas. It's full of white trash and people who are dumb. Why this show is not in NYC is just plain stupid.

Posted by Anonymous | June 29, 2010 4:07 PM

HOLY SHIT

Posted by Anonymous | June 29, 2010 4:08 PM

Las Vegas does seem like a rather inappropriate location, I must say. Their label though, and they've certainly earned the right to have it wherever they want.

Posted by Anonymous | June 29, 2010 4:13 PM

fuck...

Posted by Slob | June 29, 2010 4:14 PM

GBV tour to follow?

Posted by Anonymous | June 29, 2010 4:18 PM

MEHtador. J/K - this looks awesome!

Posted by Anonymous | June 29, 2010 4:18 PM

GBV, please play NYC

Posted by J | June 29, 2010 4:18 PM

My grandmother is going to this show, its part of her senior center's trip to Vegas! So jealous!

Posted by Anonymous | June 29, 2010 4:25 PM

nyc don't need this show. let vegas have it. we'll get all these bands here anyway. most of them already have dates scheduled.

Posted by Anonymous | June 29, 2010 4:34 PM

GBV reunion in Vegas. Not sure it gets better than that. Heaven forbid you whining New Yorkers have to leave your cocoon for a weekend.

4:07 - I've lived all over the country for substantial periods of time and can say that shows in NYC are fucking boring. NYC gets a lot in terms of quantity, but the quality of the crowds is just pathetic. I applaud Matador for doing something different.

See you in Vegas.

Posted by Anonymous | June 29, 2010 4:42 PM

GBV full stadium tour to follow!

Posted by Anonymous | June 29, 2010 4:42 PM

4:42. You Matador PR people are sooo, sooo witty.

Posted by Anonymous | June 29, 2010 4:44 PM

What? No Jay Reatard? LLLAAAAAMMMMEEEE!

Posted by Anonymous | June 29, 2010 5:02 PM

21 years = blackjack = Las Vegas

Makes sense.

Posted by Regular reader | June 29, 2010 5:03 PM

21 is when you can legally drink/gamble = las vegas

duhhhh

Posted by Anonymous | June 29, 2010 5:07 PM

@3:22 pm, get that site up and running already, andy!

Posted by Anonymous | June 29, 2010 5:10 PM

GBV - Wellmont? Please oh please do not play T5...

Posted by Anonymous | June 29, 2010 5:15 PM

5:15 - you won't have to worry about T5 because GBV is not going on tour.

Posted by Anonymous | June 29, 2010 5:18 PM

i remember seeing GBV for free at summerstage in like '96 or '97. sleater-kinney opened.

later that night they both played a secret show in Beethoven's bathtub.

Posted by Anonymous | June 29, 2010 5:26 PM

If you're turning 21, why would you want to celebrate it at home? Happy Birthday, Matador! Use protection.

Posted by Anonymous | June 29, 2010 5:36 PM

i just came in my pants.

Posted by Anonymous | June 29, 2010 6:02 PM

@5:26 If I remember that summerstage show correctly, it was post-Mag Earwhig, so it wouldn't have been "classic line-up" GBV. Great show, though.

Posted by Anonymous | June 29, 2010 6:09 PM

Ahh....I love my NY-ers but such a sense of entitlement!

Just buy a plane ticket for chrissakes!

NYC gets all of the great shows...so for once The West Coast gets a great fest save for Coachella.

Posted by Matador21 | June 29, 2010 6:13 PM

I love the panicked speculations of where GbV is "gonna play next..."

Posted by LKJ | June 29, 2010 6:16 PM

But actually, they may be worthwhile speculations, because the moment Pollard sniffs the money he will be lining up so many dates, despite his blowhard anti-GbV nonsense at Boston Spaceships shows (right before they do a ten-song GbV encore, of course), that you'll get sick of them. Can't guarantee his lineup will go for a tour, though. Tobin Sprout will get sick of that in five minutes. Is Kevin Fennell really gonna resurface for this?

Posted by LKJ | June 29, 2010 6:18 PM

Hello all you aging hipsters, it's the 2010 NOSTALGIA FEST featuring tons of bands who haven't put out a decent record in years... if they even bothered to put one out at all!!!! In addition, we've got all the crap bands we signed in the last 5 years playing too!!!

The fact this is in Vegas says all you need to know. Outside of GBV this is a total fail.

Posted by Anonymous | June 29, 2010 7:17 PM

Yeah, if I go to this it's for GbV only. Aside from them and, uh, Guitar Wolf, if you live in a major city in 2010 you have or will have eighty billion chances to see all this other jive. It's good for Vegas, though, those poor people are probably starving for some decent shows, even by bands who haven't done a good album in years.

don't miss it !...next stop Bushwick... all aboard !!

Posted by Anonymous | June 29, 2010 8:05 PM

LKJ, bob has said that he is the "guided by voices" name etc.
and has made laughs that his "solo" shows don't sell as well cuz they don't have the gbv brand.
this ain't rocket surgery . . . if he can have a laugh at it, so could we. i would hope.

Posted by aa | June 29, 2010 8:54 PM

SOMEONE ANYONE tell me why
Guided By Voices is any good?
I do not get them AT ALL.

Vegas does suck though...Hunter Thompson proved it years ago.

Posted by Anonymous | June 29, 2010 9:00 PM

i remember when gbv played in my bathroom back in '87. mitch mitchell used all my floss and then puked on the floor.

Posted by Anonymous | June 29, 2010 10:00 PM

@9:00 pm - seriously? Do me a favor and go back to your room and put your Britney Spears CD on.

Posted by Anonymous | June 29, 2010 10:29 PM

I'm with you 9:00...posters here are showing their age. Hardly anyone under 25 gets Guided By Voices.

Posted by Anonymous | June 29, 2010 10:39 PM

Yup, Wavves for the 30-40 set.

Posted by Anonymous | June 29, 2010 11:09 PM

Guided by Voices was my favorite band when I was 15. What I would give to see them now.

Posted by Anonymous | June 30, 2010 1:43 AM

GBV = "Wavves for the 30-40 set"
This might be the greatest bit of sarcasm about or the greatest unintentional indictment of the 20-30 set's lack of perspective on anything.
Anything at all.

Posted by Anonymous | June 30, 2010 2:25 AM

Posted by güzel sözler | June 30, 2010 5:51 AM

I like GBV but there live show was not that good. Saw them back in 98..maybe the 93-96 line up is better live?

Posted by Anonymous | June 30, 2010 7:24 AM

I'm with you 9:00...posters here are showing their age. Hardly anyone under 25 gets Guided By Voices.

As the great Dick Cheney once said "SO" ?

seriously who cares what 25 years olds and under get and don't get... You guys can barely even rent cars.. more for us aging hipsters I guess... just fine with a lot of us.. have fun at glasslands with your oversized glasses dorks...

Posted by Anonymous | June 30, 2010 8:05 AM

deerhunter should play this

Posted by Anonymous | June 30, 2010 8:25 AM

I vote that we start a BV Fight Club! I'd love to watch some of you fools get beaten senseless before I get in the ring and do the job myself.

ps - I could prob take down around 3 emaciated mid-20 year old hipsters before I even break a sweat. Bring it on kids!

Posted by Anonymous | June 30, 2010 8:55 AM

8:05, don't throw your bedpan - I think the original question was "Will someone explain to me GBV, I just don't get it" - to which the response (yours?) was "go listen to Ms.Spears ya twerp"... It's valid to point out that the shit spewed in here towards Wavves / Vivian Girls / Titus / etc etc etc could just as easily been flung (and was) towards the entire Matador roster 20 years ago.

Do that make Nathan Williams the equal to Robert Pollard? Of course not - but you sound like a cranky father lecturing kid on seeing The Doors in 69', back when music MEANT something.

Posted by Anonymous | June 30, 2010 9:19 AM

They should just make the GBV show 25+. I cannot believe I just read a post that said GBV's live show was not good. Um, what?!

While you youngsters were picking your nose in the 8th grade I saw GBV completely rock Chicago for 2 1/2 hours in what was a fantastic booze fest. And My Morning Jacket opened.

Posted by Anonymous | June 30, 2010 9:21 AM

@9:19....you are a straight up fool! People say negative things about Wavves and Vivian Girls because they SUCK! I mean, they can't play their instruments and realy solely on image.

Posted by Anonymous | June 30, 2010 9:51 AM

edit: rely, not realy

Posted by Anonymous | June 30, 2010 9:51 AM

9:21 yes it wasn't that good. I gave them two chances...not every band can put on a compelling live show. Maybe they got better after I saw them..I saw them once around when Do The Collapse Came out and once on the Isollation Drill Tour and it did nothing for me. When did you see them in Chicago?

Posted by Anonymous | June 30, 2010 10:26 AM

Alright 9:51 - they SUCK. Got it. Seems to me they work pretty hard as bands / musicians... If you want to say that the blogosphere's fawning is relying is their relying on image, so be it. But don't try to play the "can't play their instruments" card. That lame jab has run it's course.

Posted by Anonymous | June 30, 2010 10:43 AM

@10:43...lame jab???! Vivian Girls play guitar/ drums/ bass as well as a bunch of 13 years olds who got instruments for X-mas and took lessons for a few months until they got bored and quit.

Posted by Anonymous | June 30, 2010 10:49 AM

Then go listen to Steve Vai...a 16 year old kid will get just as much out of a Vivian Girls or Wavves show / record than you did from Sleater Kinney / GBV when you were the same age.

Posted by Anonymous | June 30, 2010 10:58 AM

aa: Out of nostalgia for the classic line-up mid-'90s shows I attended, I went to see Boston Spaceships a year or two ago. Pollard went overboard during the show with his GbV avoidance rhetoric, saying things along the lines of, "Who's the real band? BOSTON SPACESHIPS!" and leading the crowd in a chant of "BOS-TON-SPACE-SHIPS" that reminded the older fans in the crowd of the days of "G-B-V" chants. On and on he went, saying he was only gonna play stuff by his REAL band, Boston Spaceships, and the show was quite a bore. Then, for the encore, out he comes with a billion GbV songs.

Pollard wants it both ways. He wants to be recognized as a god of indie rock, but he also expects people to take seriously his endless and mediocre flood of solo/collaborative releases. He can churn out 25 different Circus Devils and Boston Spaceships albums, but each has diminishing returns and I'd be amazed if any sell more than 750 copies. He can talk a big talk about how GbV is in the past, but as I said above the idea of the cash grab here is just way too appealing and so out the window goes any "integrity" about how he's moved on to a "fruitful" "career" with other groups, if you get my drift.

That said, regardless of what a prig he has become, the classic GbV line-up will always be dear to my heart and I hope to attend this reunion show. As annoyed as it will undoubtedly make me.

Posted by LKJ | June 30, 2010 12:58 PM

12:58...classic but true!

Posted by Anonymous | June 30, 2010 1:00 PM

The folks saying GbV is just "Wavves for the 30-40 set" are pathetically out of touch and lack any historical scope.

Were it not for GbV lo-fi albums of the early to mid-'90s, there would be no Wavves. Labels like Mexican Summer have made cottage industry out of mining the territory that GbV invented and used up when Wavves was in diapers.

GbV laid the path for this stuff, and their worst lo-fi album outweighs the entire catalogs of bands like Wavves.

Posted by LKJ | June 30, 2010 1:04 PM

1:04 - apples and oranges. The lack of historical scope is continually saying Wavves (or whoever) is a terrible / no talent group when in 20 years your kids will probably have the same argument on Brooklyn Vegan 2.0

It's all sine waves, who cares - save yourself the headache and stop searching for the godhead in absolutely EVERYTHING creative.

Posted by Anonymous | June 30, 2010 1:13 PM

1:13 - Not searching for the godhead; it's just funny to see a group that created a blueprint for hundreds of bands to come be diminished to the role of an interchangeable entry in a parade of nearly faceless music-makers that came later. Wavves is a descendant of Guided by Voices if only in the larger family tree of lo-fi, tape-hiss clatter.

Never underestimate the value or importance of historical scope when it comes to art. (Or, for that matter, anything...hence the "those who do not know history are doomed to repeat it" line.)

No headaches here.

Posted by LKJ | June 30, 2010 1:46 PM

Are we all still talking about the Matador show or is this a community college group discussion of The Fountainhead?

Posted by Anonymous | June 30, 2010 2:08 PM

I thought "Wavves for the 30-40 set" was a joke meaning Wavves only plays 30 to 40 min sets... while GBV plays for 2.5 hours

Posted by Anonymous | June 30, 2010 2:12 PM

I've got a 6 berth at Kutschers for ATP NY for sale...gonna do this instead.

Any interest?

Posted by d | June 30, 2010 2:57 PM

CHAVEZ, KURT VILE, YO LA TENGO SAME NIGHT PLEASE!!!!

this will transcend nostalgia and simply be awesome.

Posted by Anonymous | June 30, 2010 3:07 PM

i can see craigslist will be flooded with people trying to dump their atp tix and rooms.. what an awful lineup atp has, especially when you put it up against what matador just released as a preliminary lineup. atp sucks, game's over. they won't do it another year because they won't sell any tickets.

Posted by Anonymous | June 30, 2010 4:18 PM

per James Greer's facebook there will be more GBV shows "James Greer Just to clarify: a) I am not playing, nor do I belong, in any "classic line-up" reunion outside my family; and b) yes, there will be more GBV dates than just the Vegas shindig. That is all ye know on earth and all ye need to know."

Posted by Anonymous | June 30, 2010 5:12 PM

Hey 2:08, would it help your low comprehension skills and attention span if we just keep all the comments restricted to memes, buzzwords, and cute references? Oh wait, I'm sorry, memez, buzzwordz, and cute referencez?

Posted by LKJ | June 30, 2010 6:10 PM

It's a shame Doug Gillard won't be part of this reunion. He was the best guitar player in that band (hands down), regardless of the year. Also, rest assured, if you haven't been to LV, don't knock it. The shitty little LES bars & clubs suck in comparison to the clubs/bars in LV. I don't blame Matador at all for doing it in Vegas. Better to go out on your 21st in style then in some lame-ass NYC venue with a bunch of snotty litlte pretensious hipsters.

Posted by Deb | June 30, 2010 6:57 PM

WASTE OF TIME OLD PEOPLE.

Posted by Anonymous | June 30, 2010 7:50 PM

pulling for a Come reunion

Posted by Anonymous | June 30, 2010 9:53 PM

6:57 In my book, Doug Gillard's arrival to the GbV fold is part of what killed it. I didn't get into that band so I could hear dazzling solos ripped out of solid-state amplifiers.

Posted by LKJ | July 1, 2010 12:16 PM

MEHg earwig

Posted by Anonymous | July 1, 2010 12:41 PM

I disagree 12:16, hearing a bunch of drunks out of tune vs a great guitar player like Gillard? I take Gillard anyday of the week. That is unless sloppy, aimless guitar playing is your thing. Also, I'm SURE he played some tube amps here and there...

Posted by Anonymous | July 1, 2010 8:54 PM

Tube or solid state...the pressing question is whether he plays to a click.

Amazing is an enormous understatement. One of the best electronic shows I've ever been to and I've seen well over a thousand concerts. I had no idea Vladislav Delay was as good a drummer & percussionist as he is- fabulous and he kept everything swinging with a very unique style of playing. If you missed this you missed out big time...
