Mermaid Parade 2010

The 2010 Mermaid Parade happened Saturday afternoon in Coney Island with special guests Lou Reed & Laurie Anderson acting as king and queen. More pictures from the annual event (NSFW), which unfortunately included a captive elephant from the circus this year, below...

Dear Lou,

Why do you make it so hard to love you?

Posted by Anonymous | June 20, 2010 12:42 AM

Lou and Laurie monetize their aged pseudo-hipster cred at every opportunity. Ick.

Don't know what to think, I'm going to listen to Berlin at full blast...........

"which unfortunately included a captive elephant from the circus this year"

fucking liberals...

Posted by Anonymous | June 20, 2010 1:17 AM

These are some really great photos! The one with the little girl in the white skirt is fantastic.

Posted by RK | June 20, 2010 1:34 AM

Lou Reed has NO idea where he is!

Posted by Anonymous | June 20, 2010 2:26 AM

Fucking liberals? Well, you are a fucking idiot if you believe an elephant....an ELEPHANT for christ's sake should be paraded down a NY street any time. The Mermaid Parade and the spirit of it should not include captive elephants.

It ruined the parade - pure and simple.

My favorite mermaid prop is he glittery parasol with streamer tenacles, which looks like a jellyfish.

Posted by Anonymous | June 20, 2010 7:41 AM

i really hope no one does mehliphant

Posted by Anonymous | June 20, 2010 8:20 AM

no sitar on a busted-wheel float photos? you missed that, did ya?

Posted by Anonymous | June 20, 2010 8:40 AM

4:57 is right--elephants are intelligent beings that should be free to live in their natural environment, which is not Coney Island. The coercive practices used by circuses are cruel (such as keeping them in isolation).

1:17am: please explain how keeping an animal in coercive captivity squares with your overall conservative philosophy.

Posted by Brian | June 20, 2010 8:56 AM

"free to live in their natural environment, which is not Coney Island."

Yes, DUMBO is clearly a more suitable location.

Posted by Anonymous | June 20, 2010 12:27 PM

too bad there were no attractive women dressed as mermaids at this festival

Posted by Anonymous | June 20, 2010 1:15 PM

If you had to listen to Laurie Anderson's noise all day, you would look like a corpse and lose all your musical creativity as well. When was it that Lou wrote decent music last? Oh yeah....10 years ago...Ecstacy.

Posted by Anonymous | June 20, 2010 1:19 PM

Depressing. All of it.

Posted by Anonymous | June 20, 2010 1:31 PM

How is this depressing? This does not seem, at all, out of the ordinary for Lou Reed. The guy has always loved anything eccentric in NY. Sorry if you don't think this dumb parade was cool enough for you or him or something but he just does what he wants. Always has.

Posted by Anonymous | June 20, 2010 2:17 PM

LOVE THIS.
this should happen all the time, bring out the freaks.. Lou Reed is spaced out

Posted by Anonymous | June 20, 2010 3:14 PM

Lou Reed was awesome, gave a great speech after the parade. Lou is New York unlike most of you fucking transplants who look at this. This parade is awesome and to the douche that doesn't think there's hot chicks at this parade you are fucking clueless or prefer meat in your can. Oh and go hug a tree, the elephant was awesome.

Posted by Anonymous | June 20, 2010 3:47 PM

agreed: this parade is a NY freakshow all the way. too bad the sourpusses don't like to see other people having good freaky fun on a beautiful day in june.

does anyone have a vid or text of Reed's speech?

Posted by Anonymous | June 20, 2010 4:02 PM

Velvet Lou was a neighbor of mine
Now he walks the dog in Jersey, brother

Posted by Hall & Oates | June 20, 2010 5:15 PM

Lou Reed gave a great speech?

He barely talked for more than 30 seconds and seemed like he had to be coaxed up there by his wife. When he did speak he didn't say much except that he was from here, he's not a visitor, he's always wanted to be in the parade. That was about it for his great speech.

Oh and Dick Zigun held up an eight track of Coney Island Baby to show Lou who didn't seem to care.

Posted by Anonymous | June 20, 2010 5:50 PM

so lame

Posted by Anonymous | June 20, 2010 6:03 PM

Lou Reed's speech was great. Gave the big ups to Brooklyn. I guess mr anonymous expected a frail 68 year old Lou Reed to give a rousing speech like some creepy politician. It's obvious to anyone that was there that Lou appears to be in poor health. I hope you none of you ever get old. This Brooklyn Vegan really attracts the biggest jerkoff hispters on the planet. Get the fuck back to Ohio, where you belong.

Posted by Lou Reed rules | June 20, 2010 6:52 PM

Lou isn't necessarily in poor health. He's acted strange and disinterested and odd and distant even when he was younger.

He's a well documented curmudgeon. It's just that as he gets older he looks like he's sick when he just sits and stares.but he was doing that years ago too he just looked younger so he didn't look ill.

Posted by Anonymous | June 20, 2010 7:18 PM

What Lou Reed said was cool, but it was so short I wouldn't actually call it a speech and I certainly wouldn't go so far as to call it great. He basically said he was glad to be there, he offered no other information or interesting tidbits that would make it a) a speech or b) great. It wasn't bad, it just wasn't anywhere near a speech or great. Get over it. It was really cool that Lou was the King of the parade and it was great to hear him briefly speak at the podium. But a great Speech? Certainly not.

Oh, and by the way just hearing him speak showed that he wasn't necessarily in bad health. He was perfectly fine for the few moments he spoke. He just looked out of it when he was being walked around by a large security force.

Posted by Anonymous | June 20, 2010 7:24 PM

Lou is an unfriendly wierdo, that doesn't mean he is in poor health.

Posted by Anonymous | June 20, 2010 7:25 PM

which one is lou reed and which one is laurie anderson? they both look like men,

Posted by Anonymous | June 20, 2010 8:38 PM

Laurie Anderson is the one smiling, Lou Reed is the one who has the grouch face.

Posted by Anonymous | June 20, 2010 9:30 PM

holy jesus

Posted by Anonymous | June 20, 2010 10:52 PM

I think Lou looks awesome in his MIA like attire.

Posted by Anonymous | June 20, 2010 11:05 PM

Lou's overrated and so is the VU.

Posted by Anonymous | June 20, 2010 11:10 PM

Lou may be overrated, but the Velvet Underground is the greatest thing ever. No contest.

Posted by Anonymous | June 20, 2010 11:38 PM

Lou reed is an old codger.
If he was your neighbor, he'd probably call the cops when you had a party.

Posted by Anonymous | June 20, 2010 11:43 PM

Do elephants like Laurie Anderson's music?

Posted by Anonymous | June 20, 2010 11:59 PM

lou is the coolest dude ever. long live v.u.

Posted by arnel g | June 21, 2010 12:05 AM

Don't know about elephants buy my dog is not into Laurie Anderson. He does like Arcade Fire though. His name is Hipster.

Posted by Anonymous | June 21, 2010 12:34 AM

My dog likes hummus.

Posted by Anonymous | June 21, 2010 12:57 AM

The first photo of him kind of shocked me. He looked very frail. He definitely does not look healthy.

Posted by Anonymous | June 21, 2010 1:13 AM

I feel so sad for the elephant. It looks so miserable. And no one gives a shit. Look at all that stuff on his head, those idiots on top of him.

Posted by Anonymous | June 21, 2010 1:18 AM

Lou is not just getting old. It does look like he is not well. He is or was an avid martial arts guy, and he was totally ripped. He now looks emaciated.

Posted by Anonymous | June 21, 2010 8:31 AM

"Hey, get off my lawn!" - Lou Reed

Posted by Anonymous | June 21, 2010 9:09 AM

Lou looks like he is in a scene from 'Weekend At Bernies'

Posted by p | June 21, 2010 9:30 AM

@ 12:34 PM Do you have a goldfish named "Cool" too?

Posted by Anonymous | June 21, 2010 9:43 AM

^No goldfish, but I have 2 dogs - one's name is Hipster and the other's name is Doofus. They're inseparable.

Posted by Anonymous | June 21, 2010 10:25 AM

I feel so bad for the Lou Reed. He looks so miserable.. Look at the old man golf hat on his head, those idiots around him.

Posted by Anonymous | June 21, 2010 10:31 AM

He looks miserable because he seems to be a pretty miserable guy. I think age and health may have something to do with it, but a big part is his persona anyway. If this was the exact same situation but 25 years ago, he would look younger and less frail but he would act pretty much the same and his demeanor and facial expression would be identical.

Posted by Anonymous | June 21, 2010 10:33 AM

I think being married to Laurie Anderson has aged Lou quite a bit.

Posted by Anonymous | June 21, 2010 11:26 AM

LOU REED *IS* NEW YORK AND YOU LITTLE TRANSPLANTED HIPSTER SHITS NEED TO DIE NOW!

GO LISTEN TO YOUR CRAPPY ARCADE DIRE CDS AND DIE DIE DIE!

Posted by Anonymous | June 21, 2010 11:32 AM

had am amazing time at the mermaid parade, as usual. the best part is the dance party after on the boardwalk. long live coney island!

Posted by Anonymous | June 21, 2010 12:05 PM

Why do fat girls always have to get naked at the parade?

Posted by Anonymous | June 21, 2010 12:59 PM

Lou Reed is sick. They have kept it out of the press. Shame on all of you for your snarky comments. Lou is a great guy. He's just a regular guy who has always had a hard time dealing with the fame part. Public persona and private are two very different things.

Posted by Anonymous | June 22, 2010 10:56 AM

Gotta love the person that says "go hug a tree, the elephant was awesome".

I'm sure they are just trying to be hilarious! Much the same way, if I were to say, it would be great to see that elephant crush you in a "hey I'm a big ass elephant and I don't need this shit anymore" kind of way.

"Lou Reed is sick They have kept it out of the press."
-Friend of Lou's

Then why are you posting that information here? Nice going keeping it out of the press.

Posted by Anonymous | June 22, 2010 11:18 AM

What does Laurie Anderson see in Lou Reed? He is such a jerk.

Posted by LKJ | June 22, 2010 4:56 PM

Elizabeth Edwards is sick too, but she hasn't spent the last twenty years acting like a jerk.

Posted by RomanHans | June 22, 2010 7:05 PM

Lou Reed is sick? Sorry to hear that -- I love the old codger.

Posted by Anonymous | June 22, 2010 7:26 PM

I like Lou Reed's album about Coney Island.

Posted by Regular reader | June 22, 2010 10:45 PM

Wow... how can all of you judge someone you don't even know. Lou Reed has written great music - and has been recognized as one of the MOST influential rock artists of ALL time by many different sources. If you wanna sit here and judge him on celebrity gossip you've heard about him, or how he acted at some parade - then you are missing the point and are extremely shallow. Get a life. Rock on Lou. You are awesome.... so is Laurie. True artists.

Lou Reed is a genius and a boundary breaker. I like "Lulu".

Posted by Greg Morris | February 1, 2012 8:18 AM

Lou Reed is a genius and his music and lyrics are pure genius

Is Lou really sick? I had thought so about a year ago but he does look better now. Anybody know anything further?
