Editors' Note: June 3, 2010The cover article in The Times Magazine on Sunday profiled the singer and political activist M.I.A. While discussing her efforts to draw attention to the civil war in her home country, Sri Lanka, she was quoted as saying: "I wasn't trying to be like Bono. He's not from Africa -- I'm from there. I'm tired of pop stars who say, 'Give peace a chance.' I'd rather say, 'Give war a chance.' The whole point of going to the Grammys was to say, 'Hey, 50,000 people are gonna die next month, and here's your opportunity to help.' And no one did."
While M.I.A. did make those remarks, she did not make the entire statement at the same point in the interview, or in the order in which it was presented.
The part that begins, "The whole point of going to the Grammys," up to the end of the quotation, actually came first. The part that begins, "I wasn't trying to be like Bono," and ends, "Give war a chance," came later in the same interview. The article should have made clear that the two quotations came from different parts of the interview. [NY Times] (via)

I give her props for trying to help her people out though!

Oh, so she still said something completely retarded, just in a different order. Good to know.

Posted by Anonymous | June 3, 2010 11:27 AM
i like that they had to issue a correction for making her more coherent.
Posted by Anonymous | June 3, 2010 11:29 AM
Are people really calling her an "activist"? Stomping your feet and shouting about something is not activism. It's annoying.

Wow, 12:11. Fucking embarrassing.

That story really made her look like an idiot. Ouch.
Posted by Anonymous | June 3, 2010 12:32 PM
The longer this goes on the worse it looks for her...if she were smart she'd let it go
Posted by Anonymous | June 3, 2010 12:36 PM
i tried reading the story since so many people were talking about it. i couldn't make it more than a third in. sooo long and not especially interesting. still, in the little i read it was pretty obvious the reporter was trying reaaally hard to make MIA look like a hypocrite. There's an art called subtlety that the reporter has yet to master.
Posted by Anonymous | June 3, 2010 12:36 PM
It doesn't take much effort to make MIA look like a hypocrite. She's like 32 and acts like a spoiled, petulant child. This girl is a millionaire, corporate whore who has done nothing for Sri Lanka and yet exploits it at every opportunity to further her music career. Give war a chance indeed.

People that encourage war should be made to collect the bodies of the dead. This woman is a moron. There is something other than just war and just peace. One day, when this woman's kid may have to go to war(and if they live in the US the chances of us having more "conflicts" are great so there probably will be many opportunities; although her kid will be rich so he won't have to go to war because we only send our poor oops) she will realize that peace or negotiating ain't that bad. Maybe she started out cool but with the cocooning in Brentwood and body guards etc this lady is just going to get worse and probably more stupid and DEFINITELY more affected.

she cares so much! I bet you she gives away most of her millions, right??

Is hummus a popular dish in Sri lanka?

An outsdanding piece abuot the most prominent artist of our day. Both the journo and Maya come across well in this context. Sure Maya is ruffing some feathers, but this is what rebels do. And the journo does what she does best, but ultimately falls shirt. Maya is the modern day Mohamed Ali in a skirt.

From the article - "I'm tone deaf and not very musical, but I like dancing, if that counts. I've got rhythm." Ought to make you feel better about being a fan. I would agree that it lines up with her voice/music. She owes a lot to Diplo and the songs she/he sample. But I don't think she wants to be in music - I think she just wants to exist and have people be interested in her - its like vanity in the flesh - no wonder why she admires Madonna who I hate and consider the biggest poseur of all time.
Posted by Anonymous | June 3, 2010 1:17 PM
her publicists should tell her to just be quiet about this article. this would have been a 3 day blog news cycle story. instead its getting drawn out and she probably turns off a lot of casual observers who would be inclined to give her a chance/ check her out at a festival or show etc. she's already super famous. i dont think in this case any publicity is good publicity.
Posted by Anonymous | June 3, 2010 1:23 PM
1:17 (2) Saying that she owes a lot to Diplo betrays a misogynist in you. You hate Madonna too, who is also a woman. I thought people like you were history.
Posted by Anonymous | June 3, 2010 1:23 PM
^ people like you breed misogyny.
Posted by Anonymous | June 3, 2010 1:36 PM
Uh 1:23(2) I am a woman. And if you had read the article, which I doubt you have, you would see what I am talking about and that it has nothing to do with gender. Weirdo.

I don't think Hirschberg got MIA's humor, but this article definitely portrays her as a shallow dunderhead.
But an artist using radical politics to advance their own capitalistic gains isnt new, or wrong necessarily.
Plus her music is pretty damn good.

Its really easy to type bullshit on a website and know its never going to get read, nor heard by anyone affiliated to MIA

"MIA, the Glenn Beck of the left. " - Colin Meloy

Meh.I.A.

I really wish she would just go away. She starts off attacking Lady Gaga, saying that Gaga is copying her, and she is better than her. Now, this sh!t? Could it be any more obvious that she just wants to see her name in the media? She doesn't care about war, she cares about publicity.
Posted by Anonymous | June 3, 2010 4:31 PM
Looks like someone needs a good cock slap to the face.
Posted by Anonymous | June 3, 2010 4:41 PM
MIA put out two fun, solid records, but at his pace she will turn into Courtney Love faster than Miley Cyrus will learn that Do is a musical note
Posted by Anonymous | June 3, 2010 5:09 PM
Colin Meloy is wrong, Glenn Beck is more entertaining.
Posted by Anonymous | June 3, 2010 5:27 PM
Complete garbage no talent idiot hipster
Posted by Anonymous | June 3, 2010 5:40 PM
the whole part about the french fries in that article makes her look so silly...and then the correction that she didnt "Actually" order the truffle fries is even funnier...

**people talking like this is the first profile lynn hirschberg has written.**
I hope the media sites are discussing her like people here are discussing MIA. And hopefully this will be the last profile Hirschberg ever writes. She either cooked the quote on her own or is or has become so sloppy that she couldn't even come close to conveying what was said in the proper order. She just lazily lumped it all together at a minimum, and maybe much worse.
It also calls into question every quote and every context here.
Hirschberg got it wrong, really badly. No need to discount that even if you hate MIA. Hirschberg should be fired. Anyone talking to her after this needs better media advisers.
Posted by Anonymous | June 3, 2010 9:45 PM
Fired for THAT? Dude, get over yourself. Meh-I.A. combed through that whole story and that was the best she could come up with. Don't shoot the messenger because she garbled 1/1000th of the message.
