...and those new dates are now on presale
Pixies

"JERUSALEM (JTA) -- In more apparent fallout from Israel's interception of a Gaza-bond flotilla, the American alternative rock band the Pixies canceled a scheduled concert in Israel.

The band was scheduled to perform Wednesday in Tel Aviv in its first concert in Israel.

"The decision was not reached easily, and we all know well the Israeli fans have been waiting for this visit for far too long," read a message received Sunday by the concert's producers in Israel from the band's management, according to reports.

"We'd like to extend our deepest apologies to the fans, but events beyond all our control have conspired against us. We can only hope for better days, in which we will finally present the long awaited visit of the Pixies in Israel."

Two other groups, Klaxons and the Gorillaz, canceled their scheduled performances in Israel following the deaths of nine activists during clashes with Israeli Navy commandos during the boarding of one of the flotilla's ships early on May 31.

The cancellations come less than a month following the cancellation of British rocker Elvis Costello, who was making a political protest. Costello called the cancellation of his scheduled June 30 and 31 concerts "a matter of instinct and conscience."" [JTA]

Pixies won't be heading to Israel, but they will continue touring in 2010 with more "Doolittle" shows now scheduled through the end of September. There were four NYC Doolittle shows in November of 2009. The closest show to NYC at the moment is Philly in September of 2010, and those tickets, like all the new dates, are on presale now ("All pre-sale ticket purchases include a download of the live recording from the show, delivered to the purchasing fan via email the day after the show*. Pre-sale prices are all-in, and are less than total cost of tickets at public outlets. This fan-only presale ends at 11:59 pm on Friday, June 11. All tickets can be claimed at WILL CALL, unless otherwise noted.). All dates and a widget that will get you a free live EP right now, below...

Thinking that they might be added to atp this year??...They're touring with the Fuck Buttons who are playing saturday night at Kutchers.

Good, boycott those idiotic Jews over in Israel. Can't wait 'til that country is destroyed.

Posted by Anonymous | June 6, 2010 7:43 PM

Add the Pixies to the Jew Hater list...which includes Elvis Costello, Santana, And Gil Scott Heron. All assholes who I hope the worst to.

Posted by Anonymous | June 6, 2010 7:43 PM

That is so great that bands are stand up to Israel and standing up for Palestine....

Posted by FUCK YEAH!!! | June 6, 2010 7:44 PM

Boycott the Pixies...They don't want play Israel or Nyc, do they have a thing against Jewish people?

Posted by Anonymous | June 6, 2010 7:44 PM

Hypocrite Pixies are playing in Arizona on 9/24.

Posted by Anonymous | June 6, 2010 7:46 PM

@7:43pm...I can't wait til the terrorist Palestinians called Hamas are destroyed and Israel can live in peace.

Posted by Anonymous | June 6, 2010 7:49 PM

Good. Fuck Israel. Why the U.S. turns a blind eye to their terrorism is beyond me.

Posted by Anonymous | June 6, 2010 7:54 PM

I hope the ticket brokers buy up all the tickets and make their weak fucking fans pay up to see these losers.

Posted by Anonymous | June 6, 2010 7:54 PM

EIGHTY SIX DOLLARS

Posted by Anonymous | June 6, 2010 8:00 PM

How dare they not play Israel. It is truly the greatest place on earth. The active gunfire should not dissuade anybody from being at the epicenter of a religious war. Those cowards, they could just as easily put on bulletproof vests.

I know, there's five good people above me, let's start a band. All you guys who posted before me, we'll pay Israel together. We'll play on a parade float with our girlfriends in tow. We'll sing about freedom, tolerance, peace, love and kindness. We'll go to Palestine too, so we can end this silly war. We'll tell them to shut the fuck up, and that their religion is absolute baloney. It'll be grand, and no harm will come to us at all. After all, Isreal & Palestine believe in free speech, just like our beloved U.S.A

Posted by Anonymous | June 6, 2010 8:03 PM

so far this is way tamer than i thought it would be. Where my haters at? step up!

Posted by Anonymous | June 6, 2010 8:06 PM

Yeah, I agree 7:46!!!! Especially since all the music fans in Arizona who'd come to their concert are racists and completely agree with that bill!

Dumb fuck

Posted by Anonymous | June 6, 2010 8:12 PM

Predicatable knee-jerk reaction. Opposing the actions of the Israeli authorities automatically means you oppose Jews. As for me, I can't wait until all thugs and morons are wiped off the face of the earth. Let Hamas and Neten-yahoo rot in the same corner of hell.

Posted by Anonymous | June 6, 2010 8:31 PM

7:46 - if you don't live in Arizona, your opinion is for shit.

Posted by Anonymous | June 6, 2010 8:32 PM

I HATE THE PIXIES NOW AND HOPE THEY ROT IN HELL. THEY ARE BIG FAT LOSERS WHO WON'T WRITE ANOTHER ALBUM TOGETHER BECAUSE IT WILL BE AWFUL. SO THEY ARE CASHING IN ON THEIR PAST.
I LOST MY RESPECT FOR THEM BECAUSE THEY ARE IGNORANT AND SUPPORT TERRORISM. THOSE BOATS FROM TURKEY WERE NOT PEACE ACTIVISTS - AND YOU ARE ALL ignorant losers for thinking they wanted peace. The whole world didn't care when jews were led to the concentration camps and now again the news is twisted to again slander Jews and not present the facts.
I despise anti-semite ignorant jerks.

Posted by Anonymous | June 6, 2010 8:34 PM

ok 8:12 & 8:32, then if you don't live in Israel your opinion is for shit.

&8:12...I'm sure all their fans in Israel who would have come to their concert are totally against peace.

Posted by Anonymous | June 6, 2010 8:37 PM

they canceled the italian show too, is it rash judgement that the cancellation is in response to the flotilla?

and also, if it is the case that they're not playing because of the flotilla, this is just as stupid as not touring in arizona, even though the politics are different

i'm sure they disagreed with george bush, policies considered by some to be murderous, but they still played shows in the usa during his reign

why deprive a people because of it's governments actions, it really is "cultural terrorism"

Posted by Anonymous | June 6, 2010 8:38 PM

i feel like the majority of commenters here are the morons who post on cnn.com or something, or they have been the same people all along

Posted by Anonymous | June 6, 2010 8:39 PM

FUCK THE PIXIES!!! ROT IN HELL!!!!

Posted by Anonymous | June 6, 2010 8:41 PM

8:34 is off his meds.

The holocaust was one of the worst evils in the history of mankind. But that doesn't mean that Israel's actions aren't deplorable and evil in their own way.

Posted by Anonymous | June 6, 2010 8:48 PM

How would everyone in the U.S. have liked it if all foreign bands boycotted the U.S. for 8 years because they disagreed with George W. Bush's policies?

Do you think that would have made one bit of difference in U.S. policies those years?

Posted by Anonymous | June 6, 2010 8:48 PM

question - where does it say anywhere that they won't be playing in protest? looks like they just don't want to go the fuck over there right now, and will once this shut invariably calms down (which it probably will in a few days).

Posted by Anonymous | June 6, 2010 8:53 PM

8:48 I am 8:34. Why do wrongly assume that someone who dares to critcize the Pixies is a male? And If you read up on history you would know that Israel's has time and time again offered to make peace with the Palestinians but their overtures have been rejected over and over in favor of violence and terrorism.
If an arab is killed that is bad, and the world reacts. But when a jew is killed by terrorism there is nothing but world silence and absolutely no condemnations. If the Palestian could have been their own land years ago if they did not reject the existance of Israel.

Posted by Anonymous | June 6, 2010 8:55 PM

8:55 = professional (female) victim

There, is that better?

Posted by Anonymous | June 6, 2010 9:05 PM

call me a victim if you want - I never had grandparents because 3 out of 4 were slaugtered in the holocaust so if I feel Israel has the right to exist and defent itself when threatened then call me a victim. And if you don't belive the Israeli agents who entered the boat were threatened then why don't you read up on it.

Posted by Anonymous | June 6, 2010 9:12 PM

Israel has no right to terrorize other peoples. Sadly, in the case of Israel, the oppressed has become the opressor. And the world knows it.

Posted by Anonymous | June 6, 2010 9:16 PM

After Bill Clinton left office he described Arafat as "an aging leader who relishes his own sense of victimhood and seems incapable of making a final peace deal."

Clinton blamed Arafat for failing to reach an Israeli/Palestinian peace agreement in the 2000 Camp David summit.

The Palestinians are the ones still playing the "victim" card.

Posted by Anonymous | June 6, 2010 9:48 PM

@9:37..you got it right, it's appropriate that the pixies named their shows "do little".

Posted by Anonymous | June 6, 2010 9:52 PM

I think too many people start opposing the policies of israel without looking at a map. The plan geography of this situation makes ensuring the security of the Israeli people (a people including other racial denominations besides the Jews) an almost impossible task .
We are spoiled living in the United States with extensive oceanic barriers protecting us. Imagine the taliban controlling a "state" within New York City. (Watch someone say "they already do, its called Queens."

y'all are anti-Semitic bigots. pixies should do a free show in the hasidic part of williamsburg.

Posted by Anonymous | June 6, 2010 9:55 PM

It was outrageous when artists and governments boycotted South Africa, too. It's infuriating that the Afrikaners were not permitted to hear Toto play live.

Posted by PW Botha | June 6, 2010 9:56 PM

$86 a ticket for old material? The pixies are ripping off their fans.

These greedy bastards should be giving at least $20 a ticket to peaceful charities if they really wanted to make a difference in the world.

Posted by Anonymous | June 6, 2010 9:57 PM

Here are some facts for those on here that are obviously alittle "mentally challenged" by the Middle East:

1. Israel can no longer play the "anti-Semitic" card when they routinely break international law. It's obvious the tide has turned and US taxpayers are seeing billions get sqandered on weapons in the Middle East by a rogue state (yes Israel).

2. I applaud the Pixies for standing up for people's rights, and I don't applaud for dumbasses like 8:34, who need to read up on current events. Israel's been playing the victim card since 1967. The land-grab is over and so is the Palestinian apartheid. Murder is murder at the end of the day, I don't consider Nobel Peace prize winners on a boat to be "terrorists".

Posted by Anonymous | June 6, 2010 10:04 PM

Posted by Anonymous | June 6, 2010 10:28 PM

can't we just not care that a 90's indie rock band isn't playing one middle eastern show, and move on with our pointless overprivledged lives? none of you hipster fucks has any grasp of single other world issue then the ones you heard about on your private college campus.

Posted by Anonymous | June 6, 2010 10:32 PM

let me share some facts also.

1. Gaza's government is run by Hamas, a group recognized as a terrorist organization which has pledged to destroy Israel. People tend to overlook that fact. But it's clearly a significant issue.

2. In the past year, terrorists in Gaza were firing dozens of missiles into Israel every day. Again a significant fact that tends to be overlooked.

Those two facts above have led Israel to have a blockade around Gaza. Every other country in the world would have acted the same way.

Posted by Anonymous | June 6, 2010 10:33 PM

I can't believe people are still moronic enough to label those who question the policies of the Israeli government as "anti-semetic". That phrase is just used to deflect attention away from the illegal actions of the government of Israel, which does not in any way, shape or form hold the best interests of those of the Jewish faith.

Posted by Anonymous | June 6, 2010 10:39 PM

Have people cheering the pixies for any supposed boycott and referring to israel's actions in this case as terrorism actually seen the footage of what happened?? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0LulDJh4fWI

Posted by Anonymous | June 6, 2010 10:53 PM

well said 10:33pm.

Posted by Anonymous | June 6, 2010 11:06 PM

Elvis Costello pulled out of two Israeli shows, saying his appearances would have been “interpreted as a political act.” Carlos Santana and Gil Scott-Heron also canceled planned Israel dates.

Posted by coach purses | June 6, 2010 11:08 PM

the u.s. supports israel out of love for the jewish people, amirite?

Posted by Anonymous | June 6, 2010 11:35 PM

the people who planned this boat are part of Turkey's radicalized Muslims groups with ties to terroist groups. The Israeli agents had the right to check boats for weapons, etc. They offered for all supplies that were not weapons to proceed to Gaza by truck. They came under attack and responded to this attack. That the Pixies would use the actions of radical anti-peace fundamentalists to cancel a trip to Israel is shocking.

I am sure all of the Israelis who were going to the pixies concert all want and work for peace. That is why canceling is so LAME! It proves that the pixies know nothing about Israeli culture; instead they are only at best, victims of the media and its biased news coverage. IF they really cared pixies would go and play music to inspire people. But I guess they cant do that anymore....

Posted by Anonymous | June 7, 2010 1:31 AM

people who vilify israel over this are the same people who don't believe in israel's right to exist. it's pointless to argue with them.

this is a complicated regional issue. it is against the interest of every arab nation for there to be a palestinian state. the humanitarian supplies were just the cover to try to break the blockade. the group trying to break the blockade was trying to establish a precedent where any weapon could be brought into the gaza strip without any check.

people wonder why they are called an anti-semite when they disproportionately criticize israel and not so many other countries in the world doing far worse things. at the end of the day all the actions of the israeli government (while i think settlements should be stopped and a liberal gov't elected) are irrelevant and a red herring until the arab states are ready to make peace.

hamas in their charter calls for the destruction of israel. the palestinians elected them. no matter what israel does if they don't have someone to make peace with there will be no peace.

Its funny that Kim Deal did not want to do a reunion until Joey Santiago explained that he needed $ to send kids to better school. But Pixies have a problem with Israel taking measures like boarding boats to in prevent violence to its citizens.

What nonsense and typical how anybody who criticizes Israel is slandering Jews.
Way to cry wolf and remember that Zionism is a racial supremacist ideology. Look up the history Deir Yassin, or the USS Liberty ship attacked by Israeli army and new it was the people who supply it with now days a free 8 billion a year plus that never gets paid back to the U.S.

Also remember Rachel Cory who was intentionally killed and backed over again with the bulldozer as she was laying half dead.

When the Palestinians where killed in Deir Yassin they were unarmed and it was the start of instilling fear in them that someone believes god gave them the right to take the land and their is no intention of a Palestinian state since the greater zionist map includes also taking parts of Syria,Jordan, Egypt, Lebanon and possibly Saudia Arabian land.

In the mid-1930s, Ben-Gurion met George Antonius (an advisor to al-Mufti, Hajj Amin al-Husseini, who was one of the few Palestinians whom Ben-Gurion had contacts with), and suggested that Palestinians should help the Zionists to expand the borders of their future "Jewish state" to include areas under French control, such as southern Lebanon and the Golan Heights. In response, Mr. Antonius burst laughing and answered:

"So, you propose that what England did not give you [as stated in the Balfour Declaration), you will get from us."

Ben-Gurion "had a dream" to annex southern Lebanon to the "Jewish state", and to establish a Christian state north of the Litani River. At the beginning of the 1948 war, he stated:

'The Muslims rule of Lebanon is artificial and easily undermined. A Christian state ought to be set up whose southern borders would be Litani River. Then we'll form an alliance with it." In the coming years he repeated this idea, and according to Moshe Sharett, Moshe Dayan (who was Israeli's chief of staff in the early 1950s) responded favorably to this idea and who according to Sharett said: "In his [Dayan] view, all we need to do is to find a Christian Lebanese officer, perhaps no higher than a captain, and win him over or buy him with money, so that he would declare himself the savior of Maronite population. Then the Israel army would enter Lebanon, occupy the territory in question and establish a Christian government which would form an alliance with Israel." Sharett himself considered this an "awful" idea.

What's ironic that this "awful" idea was precisely executed thirty years later by Manahem Bagin and Ariel Sharon during the Israeli invasion and occupation of Lebanon between 1982-2000.
In September 1937, he stated to a group of American Jewish labor leaders in New York:

"the borders of the Jewish state will not be fixed for eternity."

stupidest and most anti semetic comment on this thread.

Posted by Anonymous | June 7, 2010 11:02 AM

As a progressive jew it baffles me when i see this not so veiled anti-semetism from the left. i can't see any other explanation when people on the left are siding over a liberal democracy with a government/culture that is:

-virulently misogynistic (treatment of women, legal honor killings in 'progressive arab nations' like jordan)
-racist (see genocide in darfur by arab muslim gov't on black Muslim population)
- homophobic

these countries operate in a manner that is the antithesis of liberal belief yet so many liberals side with them over israel ( a country that is significantly more socially liberal than the united states) and disproportionately vilify israel when there are countries doing far worse things (such as our own + every arab country). and then you wonder why people call you anti-semetic?

Posted by Anonymous | June 7, 2010 11:15 AM

Elvis Costello and The Pixies, two artists who's careers are basically dead, and who are floating on past accomplishments..

It was easy for them to cancel their shows. These are not major artists with big promotion where canceling a show based on a 'political stand' actually means anything. When Elvis or the Pixies or Gil Scott or even Santana cancels a show there, nobody really cares. It's not a media event because their concerts aren't media events.

It probably costs a lot to go all the way to Israel to play one or two shows and then leave. It's not like they can make a tour of the middle east, as most of the arab states have no interest in them and wouldn't allow them to play anyway.

I'm sure the venue that the Pixies would be playing in wasn't that large, and we don't know how many tickets they even sold, so it's an easy financial decision to cancel and pretend it's an ethical decision.

I also find it ironic that these artists are boycotting shows in the only country in that whole section of the world that would allow them to play a show. Kinda stupid to cancel if you think about it. Why not play the show and then use it as a platform to speak your mind.

Posted by Anonymous | June 7, 2010 11:17 AM

I love the Pixies, always have. However, I do believe that boycots such as this are very misguided. Nothing will change in Israel because of the Pixies playing there or not playing there. Israel does have a thriving democracy within its boundaries, and it is very unlikely that the concert would be attended by the hardliners who have a disproportionate amount of power there in respect to their actual numbers. This is just as misguided as when European intellectuals boycotted the US during the Bush presidency. In fact, unless the Pixies support the USA's apparently endless wars in Iraq and Afghanistan as well as US financial support for Israel, they may very well consider boycotting the USA. But that wouldn't make any sense would it?

Posted by Rocky Napoli | June 7, 2010 11:17 AM

hell yeah boycott israel

Posted by nikhil | June 7, 2010 11:23 AM

Yes, this is true. The cancelation of these shows in the name of 'protest' doesn't seem honest. It seems more of a financial decision under the label of protest. If they REALLY wanted to protest, they would go ahead and play the shows. Realistically, they are accomplishing nothing by canceling. Yet if they went there and played the show, they would have a platform and a captive audience to spout their disapproval or anger or whatever feelings they have over the issues at hand. Israel is a democracy after all, and they would be able to say whatever they wanted in to a microphone. Then the local media in Israel would report it and they would get media coverage of their point of view. They could express their feelings and get heard. By canceling the most media coverage they end up getting is right here on Brooklyn Vegan. HA!

Posted by Anonymous | June 7, 2010 11:27 AM

When a major artist with a major tour stop in Tel Aviv cancels in the name of protest, then the world will take notice. Until then it is meaningless. Nobody cares about the Pixies.

McCartney went ahead and played a show there, and that was such a big deal in the world media, that if HE had icancelled it would have meant something. Instead he went ahead a played, like he should have, because he has balls and isn't an idiot.

Posted by Anonymous | June 7, 2010 11:31 AM

Posted by Anonymous | June 7, 2010 11:33 AM

The real reason why the Pixies cancelled is because Kim Deal was afraid she wouldn't be able to get her heroin past the Israeli security checkpoint.

Darn right about Israel being the only country in the region where the pixies would even be allowed to play. Islam forbid music, singing, dancing and playing musical instruments. They also forbid any artistic pursuit such as drawing pictures, sculpting figures and so on, even photography.

Posted by Anonymous | June 7, 2010 2:42 PM

It has been noted many times, evn by the Pixies themselves, that they are touring for the money. Their motivations are spotty at best!

Wow! We broke 100 comments, boys! Lets keep this going!

If it helps any, I've been doing some research and I found that Jews are terrible. Israel is even worse. Can't we fly all these Israeli Jews to the moon so they can shut the fuck up already (preferably eradicate them but that's not going to happen...unless the Jason Voorhees effect happens to Hitler, wherever he is)?

All the real estate you want up there. Happy the Pixies manned up and told the Jew fans to go fuck themselves, even hough the press release reads otherwise. Thanks to Elvis Costello, Gorillaz, Klaxons and whoever else.

Imagine how great the world would be without the constant complaining, bitching, fighting and trouble-making caused by Jews. Whether in downtown Brooklyn or in the Middle East. These assholes never quit. WORST. PEOPLE. EVER.

"The Nazis had it right."

yeah, because if the Nazis had won the war, we'd all be listening to German folk music right now. There would be no Pixies or even any Rock n Roll.

Posted by Anonymous | June 7, 2010 3:53 PM

3:23 was most probably written by a Jewish hipster being ironic.

Posted by Anonymous | June 7, 2010 4:35 PM

I saw the Pixies live a coupla years ago.. they were terrible. They are doing the Israelis a favor.

Posted by Anonymous | June 7, 2010 4:35 PM

Funny. A lot of bands seem to want to play Israel because it is fashionable. But the minute something happens politically, it becomes fashionable to back out.

Israel is not a convenient stop on a tour. Like someone else mentioned, it is a pretty isolated place to play. There are no other countries around Israel that are hospitable to a rock band.

It's not like they are just pulling some random tour stop on their way to the next nearby city. They are bookingg an entire specific trip to the middle east and back, most of the time for only one show in a small venue.

Seems like any artist that books a show there is doing so because they specifically want to. So to back out claiming protest of policy seems rather hypocritical.

If they felt strongly about the issues regarding the Israeli governments actions in the past, they never would have booked the show there to begin with. It's really not like the Israeli government has ever taken a different stand than they ever have. The current events and actions of Israel offer no indication of a change in policy from the past. For better or for worse. So to book a show there in the first place means that you have no problem with the policy. Therefore why would all of a sudden you point to a specific current event as reason to determine your trip? That's why I agree with a previous poster that the decision to not go in protest is bullshit, and it's an easy and lame excuse to back out of a financial and logistical obligation that may not have been in the bands best interests.

Posted by Anonymous | June 7, 2010 4:48 PM

The Pixies not performing in Israel does not hurt the Israelis at all. Rather than spend the equivalent of $86 in shekels to susidize the pixies greed, the Israelis can now spend it on better things.

One other thing, don't forget that there are a good number of Israelis who are isalmic. Some of them may have had tickets for the cancelled show.

Posted by Anonymous | June 7, 2010 4:49 PM

Oh no. a bunch of over the hill drug addicts are canceling a show overseas. What are we gonna do.

Posted by Anonymous | June 7, 2010 4:50 PM

How can we get the Pixies to cancel all the US shows too?

Posted by Anonymous | June 7, 2010 4:51 PM

Hey all you haters and idiots:

The Pixies never said that they were canceling the show in protest of the recent boat debacle.

All they said was:

“events beyond all our control have conspired against us.”

That could mean anything. All the anti Israeli's immediately take that to mean that they are canceling out of protest.

Posted by Anonymous | June 7, 2010 4:58 PM

Hmmmmm. Something fishy here.

Klaxons and Gorillaz Sound System,, like the Pixies, were all slated to play at the same two-day PicNic music festival being held at the Tel Aviv Exhibition Grounds this week.

Could be a dispute with the organizers over money, etc?

I find it very suspect that three acts all who are supposedly backing out of playing in a country based on political reasons were all due to play the same venue at the same festival with the same promotor.

Something doesn't add up here..

Posted by Anonymous | June 7, 2010 5:02 PM

from ew.com - "Billboard says the festival’s organizers have acknowledged that the band’s decision is related to those events."

Posted by Anonymous | June 7, 2010 5:19 PM

yeah because we all know that if a band is fighting with a festival organizer, that the festival organizers are going to admit it's their own fault.

The only entity here that I would trust to admit that the cancelation is directly related to the boat event are the Pixies themselves. They are the ones who canceled. and they have not said it. So far the media, the anti Israelis and the festival organizers have suggested to us all why the Pixies have canceled yet the Pixies have not said this.

Do you always listen to what third parties say?

Posted by Anonymous | June 7, 2010 5:27 PM

its really funny - bands that don't like us policies never boycott the US.

Posted by Anonymous | June 7, 2010 5:32 PM

Lots of times bands have canceled shows in different parts of the world due to security issues based on the current events at hand.

Once there is an event like this, the security risk of travel to that region increases.

It might not be economically feasible based on insurance costs, or band members may not feel it a safe time to travel and stay in Israel. That does not automatically mean that they are protesting the Israeli governement's actions or policies.

As mentioned in another post, Israel's policies and actions have not changed since before the shows were booked, so I don't believe that that is why they were suddenly canceled. I think it has more to do with personal safety/band finances.

The acts that are canceling are relatively small acts, so it's not hard to see through the screen of political protest to why they are not really going: safety and economics

The larger acts that have not canceled.. i.e Metallica, Elton John, Rod Stewart, etc.. can afford security detail, safe and secure lodgings, and insurance, etc. Their cancelations would be more meaningful. They press on. RIghtfully so.

Posted by Anonymous | June 7, 2010 5:37 PM

"its really funny - bands that don't like us policies never boycott the US."

That's because it would be career suicide to not play the US. However, it is easy to cancel one show in the middle east.

NOT playing in the US would mean the loss of much money, while PLAYING in Israel would probably also mean the loss of money.

I don't even know if the Pixies would even break even if they had played the Tel Aviv show.

Posted by Anonymous | June 7, 2010 5:41 PM

Theres numerous IDF past and present people who write for the NY Times and LA Times. Jonah Goldberg and his horrible gibberish screaming at anyone who criticizes Israel. Call someone anti semitic and you cry victim hood trying to shut down any dialogue. Palestinians are a semitic people if you knew your history.

The last five years The Wall St Journal, NY Times, the Los Angeles times, and Washington Post published 680 op eds on Israel/Palestine. 214 were written by Israeli writers and 86 by Palestinian writers.

Those writing the most op editorials are right-wing Israeli politicians Natan Sharansky and Dore Gold and right-wing American academics Bernard Lewis, Daniel Pipes and Fouad Ajami.

Israeli American writer Yossi Klein Halevi, who writes for The New Republic and is a former member of Meir Kahane's racist Jewish Defense League tops The LA Times list of repeat writers with a record 35 op eds.

Because we all know the papers are just filled with frequent articles from Noam Chomsky or anyone Palestinian. Yeah right.

Hey BROOKLYN VEGAN:

I’ve been reading through this thread and regardless of my viewpoints and which side of the issue I stand on, I must take exception to the fact that you have chosen not to remove a few of the posts.

As a frequent reader of your blog and the many humorous and informative comments posted by your readers, I hold in high regard your stand on generally not removing and/or censoring any or all comments. I think that in the scheme of the topics that is a good fair game.

However, I must take exception with a few of the comments in this very long thread. Three in particular. Which is not many in a thread lasting 136 posts.

These three comments are specifically racist posts that are outside of the theme and context of what is being discussed. There is nothing wrong with expressing feelings about a situation and/or the state or government of a country or a decision of a band to withdraw form a performance. However, the below three commentaries are not about the Pixies, the Israeli raid on the boat, the Israeli government’s policy or anything to do with the topic at hand. They are 100 percent anti-Semitic racist comments that stand on their own. They are comments that glorify and suggest the eradication of a people. I do believe that they should be removed. They add nothing to the discussion about the topic at hand and take away from the integrity, intelligence, ethics and humor of your website.

While reading through this otherwise interesting thread, upon getting to these posts I felt as though your website had been hijacked by a neo nazi that found a place to post their rhetoric and ideology.

By leaving these few comments, you are allowing your great site to be infected.

I hope you can see the difference between active heated political discussion and pure unadulterated ignorant racism. Those posts don’t do anyone any good. I implore you to remove them. Here’s hoping you do the right thing.

Here are the posts:

If it helps any, I've been doing some research and I found that Jews are terrible. Israel is even worse. Posted by Anonymous | June 8, 2010 11:53 AM

the comments should stay. it shows how anti-semetism is a huge problem still.

Posted by Anonymous | June 8, 2010 11:54 AM

"I’ve been reading through this thread and regardless of my viewpoints and which side of the issue I stand on, I must take exception to the fact that you have chosen not to remove a few of the posts."

I actually have not had a chance to read through all the comments, so thanks for finding those. I agree they are disgusting. That said, you just copied and pasted them word for word. To completely delete them, I'd need to delete your post too. And then this very response I'm typing wouldn't make sense to people either.

Any normal person would read those racist comments and realize they were written by total morons and agree with what you had to say, or as 11:54 just pointed out, "the comments should stay. it shows how anti-semetism is a huge problem still."

I agree they should be deleted. I agree they should stay...

Posted by brooklynvegan | June 8, 2010 12:06 PM

If the comments should stay to highlight the problem of current racism, then they should indeed be highlighted in some way... flagged. To just leave them as is suggests that the operator of the website may be fine with the racism.

If someone anonymously painted a swastika on Mr. Brooklyn Vegan's house would he remove it? Or would he just let it sit there for all to see? Sure it would show that racism still exits, but you really have to either remove it or point to it or call it out in some way if you make a choice to not remove it..., you can't just let it sit there without any commentary or outrage. People might feel that you are complicit or agreeable with what someone wrote.

If Brooklyn Vegan chooses to keep those comments up, they should write a comment of their own stating that these type of racist comments are not welcome on their site. There needs to be some sort of check and balcance to this sort of thing, otherwise this website could just become yet another forum for anyone to spew any kind of hatred/threat they want.

Calling all racists, just go ahead and post whatever you want here. Nobody will stop you. Is that what you want from these forums? Is that what you want Brooklyn Vegan to become?

Posted by Anonymous | June 8, 2010 12:07 PM

"Any normal person would read those racist comments and realize they were written by total morons"

Problem is, there's a lot of non-normal people who get turned on by that sort of rhetoric.

Posted by Anonymous | June 8, 2010 12:25 PM

I love how the anti-semitic dipshits hide behind their computer and spew mindless word-drool they''d never have the balls to say in public. But losers who are that hateful and ignorant, tend to despise themselves the most.

10:04 from June 6 - Arafat was a nobel peace prize winner, and he was the terrorists of all terrorists.

Posted by Anonymous | June 8, 2010 6:52 PM

Pixies are an awesome band, and Israel is an amazing tiny country with a disproportionately high number of contributors to society (for example, the number of medical innovations that come our of this tiny country is unreal).

we could debate til the cows come home about how the Palestinian cause is totally exploited by all Arab governments (and they depend on sensitive, confused little leftist brooklyn hipsters who know nothing of Arab or Muslim culture to succeed in their efforts).

No reason to believe that Pixies dislike Israel (why would they have booked show there in first place?)

As for their need for money, what band isn't? they probably make less today than the typical idiot reality TV stars make.

to all the leftist Israel bashers, no I don't think you all are anti-semitic, but yes you are all clueless and biased. I mean, you have no idea what position Israel is placed in; do you think most Israelis like seeing people living in poverty? all of the Palestinian plight is the fault of their own selfish, unscrupulous people. for Israel to drop its guard would be suicide.

re: the flotilla incident, what normal peaceful people would immediately start attacking military officers before they could even reach the ground of the boat? can you imagine the US coast guard or other branch of the military allowing a foreign ship onto shore without any kind of clearance? how fucking stupid are you people?

Posted by Anonymous | June 8, 2010 7:58 PM

another point- the argument that there were no weapons on board the flotilla is false. 6 pairs of fists attacking one person can be just as fatal as a gun can be. death from a little pocket knife is the same as death from an uzi.

bottom line is that these "peaceful volunteers" started the violence.

and having a nobel peace prize does not preclude one from being or supporting violence. best example is Arafat, as someone pointed out above.

Posted by Anonymous | June 8, 2010 8:10 PM

Yeah, U.S. newspaper readers really want to hear more of the views of terrorist hamas palestinians.

Posted by Anonymous | June 8, 2010 9:33 AM

Yes exactly. You say all Palestinians are terrorists which is nonsense which no one believes and we see that the racist comments are coming from people looking to provoke a response. Norman Finkelstein was also wrongly removed from his job at De Paul university for daring to criticize. Finkelstein is credited by Avi Shlaim, Adam Shatz, Noam Chomsky and others with exposing Joan Peters' book From Time Immemorial as a "fraud" and "a monumental hoax"

What non sense since theres many Palestinians who have had their homes taken by force since 1947. If you question any war crimes, land grab, and initial zionist terrorist acts like the bombing of the king david hotel 60 years ago at the inception of the state of Israel. Thats not a secular nation you lemmings of right wing religious zealots.

So what are you referring to at all because NATO had checked the boat initially before it left that was fired on when IDF commandos came down on the ship and people were shot point blank in the head before people attacked with anything. All of the cameras of journalists that had gone out to numerous stations on the boat with people from Ireland, the U.S. and Turkey was confiscated by the IDF. Then when it was put out on You Tube or elsewhere where it was heavily edited. Thats no secret.

What happened to Rachel Cory?

No using white phosphorous on a population is very sick.

Posted by Anonymous | June 9, 2010 10:24 AM

I try to be pro-Israel, but when I see them defiantly continue to build settlements on contested land, rather than trying to come to a peaceful resolution... Israel loses my support. It's the same metality of the ignorant right wing in the US. They don't consider themselves capable of being wrong.

I completely agree with you that Israel should stop/dismantle their settlements. However, in terms of making peace, I think the settlements are a red herring. Israel pulling out of all the settlements will not bring peace as long as Hamas is dedicated to the destruction of Israel. It could be argued that Israel's actions in general are a red herring. If the arabs (not just palestinians because it is a regional issue) wanted peace, there would have been peace 60 years ago.

While I think Israel should stop the settlement, I don't think its unreasonable either for them to ask for peace in return before they give up strategic land (many of the settlements are on high places, hills etc) that could be used to launch rockets and such.

***

The point of them checking the boat was not because they might have thought weapons would be on this SPECIFIC boat but because if the boat was able to break the blockade, this would set up a precedent for unfettered access to the gaza port for any ship wanting to bring weapons to hamas, etc. There were articles yesterday about hamas turning down the aid at the boarder. The humanitarian aide in these boats was simply a mechanism to try to break the blockade and allow a situation to bring in weapons down the line and also to try to goad Israel to do something stupid (such as boarding the boat by helicopter and killing people on the boat) which would turn the world PR against the blockade and thus allow a future situation for weapons to be brought in.

Just because 300 million muslims and historically anti-semetic european nations can shout louder than Israel doesn't necessarily mean they are right.

What is your source?
NATO checked the boat before hand. It looks as usual that Israel can do no wrong, takes no responsibility just like the good ol previous president bush with the Fox news sad mentality, and has their PR campaign in full swing in the U.S. with lobbying PAC's. Does that feel good to align with the right in this country because Israel supposedly cant be criticized?

If the Israelis that were right wing militants really wanted peace 61 years ago they would have obeyed the British mandates and not gone into Palestinian villages killing hundreds in Deir Yassin and elsewhere. The belief is that its their god given right to take all the land. That
is the ideology of zionism and the orthodox.

Wow what a pathetic statement. So you have a fundamentalist religious belief and believe that since it sounds like your taking the word of the old testament and Torah?
Which tribe are you talking about because the ones who have been there for thousands of years are the Ethiopian and Persian Judeans. Are you saying the 13th tribe?

Relentless research established as equally true that the ‘Jews’ in Eastern Europe at no time in their history could be correctly regarded as the direct lineal descendants of the legendary ‘lost ten tribes’ of Bible lore. The ‘Jews’ in Eastern Europe in modern history cannot legitimately point to a single ancient ancestor who ever set even a foot on the soil of Palestine in the era of Bible history.

Research also revealed that the Jews in Eastern Europe were never Semites are not Semites now nor can they ever be regarded as Semites at any future time by any stretch of the imagination. Exhaustive research also rejects as a fantastic fabrication the generally accepted belief by Christians that the Jews in Eastern Europe are the legendary Chosen People so very vocally publicized by the Christian clergy from their pulpits.

n the year 740 A.D. the Khazars were officially converted to Judaism. A century later they were crushed by the incoming Slavic-speaking people and were scattered over central Europe where they were known as Jews.

From the above, we can clearly see that the Jews fully understand their Khazarian heritage as the third edition of the Jewish Encyclopedia for 1925 records.

Chazars or Khazars, A people of Turkish origin whose life and history are interwoven with the very beginnings of the history of the Jews of Russia. The kingdom of the Chazars was firmly established in most of South Russia long before the foundation of the Russian monarchy by the Varangians

Siamese Dream and Mellon Collie were really good albums. Got them when they came out, still throw them on at times and think they're great. It saddens me when I hear bands from that era when I was a teenager and hear their new stuff and it's so clear how they've lost it, they sound desperate to recapture a sound/magic that they haven't had in 15 years (holy shit).... And then I realize that is not unlike a lot of us.

Amazing is an enormous understatement. One of the best electronic shows I've ever been to and I've seen well over a thousand concerts. I had no idea Vladislav Delay was as good a drummer & percussionist as he is- fabulous and he kept everything swinging with a very unique style of playing. If you missed this you missed out big time...

personally, music and politics don't mix and the Pixies kind of suck anyway so who really cares what they do. And on a political note... can't we all just get along?!

The humanitarian aide in these boats was simply a mechanism to try to break the blockade and allow a situation to bring in weapons down the line and also to try to goad Israel to do something stupid (such as boarding the boat .

let me share some facts also.
