Silversun Pickups

"The show last night was great. It was at the Brooklyn Waterfront in Williamsburg. I swear Brooklyn is looking more like Manhattan every day. I miss the old Brooklyn. Ken and I used to go to raves in the factory buildings in Williamsburg - the Cat's Head was one I particularly remember - wild. I had friends who lived there in 89 and the early 90's, it was definitely the fringes - think Johnny Suede, yeah that's the Williamsburg I know.

But they made a nice open space on the water. The stage faced the city so the musicians kept commenting how how awesome it was to play in varying stages of sunset looking over Manhattan. It was beautiful...

...The [second] band was Against Me. I'd only heard "I was a teenage anarchist" on the radio and of course loved the song. They were a really tight bar punk band. Matt said they reminded him of a lighter version of The Drop Kick Murphys. The thing that bugs me is this 'woah-oh-oh' chorus thing all these bands like Cold Play, Kings of Leon are doing. They did that and it annoyed me because it was unnecessary. It was tight and a bit raucous. I liked them a lot." [Semper Fido]

Band of Horses, Grizzly Bear & Karen Elson kicked off the season of shows at Williamsburg Waterfront last Sunday. Show number two happened on Friday when the Silversun Pickups / Against Me! / Henry Clay People tour came to Brooklyn. More pictures and the setlists and a video from that show, below...

3rd pic from Against Me! = beautiful

P.S. How easy is it to sneak stuff into pool shows this year?

There's an awesome shot in the Silversun pictures of someone in that apartment behind the stage watching from their window. That's awesome. I bet the fancy condo people are PISSED tho.

Will be checking this spot out for the first time on Friday for FAITH NO MORE!

Posted by noamjamski | June 28, 2010 11:53 AM

yeah, that's not a "fancy condo"

Posted by Anonymous | June 28, 2010 12:06 PM

sounds fun, but $40 for a show???

Wishing Brooklyn wasn't like Manhattan...admirable.

Citing factory raves as a positive aspect of olden Brooklyn days over Manhattan...wrong.

way to ignore the best band of the 3.
anyone that was there have anything to say about Henry Clay People?
I've seen them before, and thought they were pretty good.

Posted by Thierry Ennui | June 28, 2010 12:53 PM

I really hate the stupid setup of these shows. So many lines- admissions, ID check, drink TICKETS, actual drinks. And the beer "garden" separated from the rest of the space. It's a great view of manhattan, and the sound is actually pretty good, but they really shat the bed with the other details.

Posted by Anonymous | June 28, 2010 1:08 PM

god...against me are fucking horrible.

Posted by Anonymous | June 28, 2010 1:25 PM

DEAR 1:25 your horrible!!!!!

Posted by Anonymous | June 28, 2010 1:31 PM

SSP are an extremely tight live act, i have been to many show over the years and they are a very good live band. the waterfront is an incredible place for a show.

Posted by Anonymous | June 28, 2010 1:44 PM

DEAR 1:31 learn between 'you're' and 'your'

Posted by Anonymous | June 28, 2010 2:04 PM

goto wellmont over this dump - also avoid randalls island and liberty state park shows - everything will play the city eventually

Posted by Chris | June 28, 2010 2:36 PM

Tom Gabel is one of the greatest songwriters of his generation. And 7 Seconds was doing "woah oh-oh" before any of you motherfuckers were born.

Posted by Anonymous | June 28, 2010 3:03 PM

Silversun Pickups as the headliners of any show... hahaha that shit is funny.

Posted by Venkman | June 28, 2010 3:36 PM

fuck against me! they fucking blow now

Posted by nikhil | June 28, 2010 3:46 PM

the girl = priceless

Posted by Anonymous | June 28, 2010 3:52 PM

Do you think that guy ever wakes up and says, "God, I really don't feel like putting on that bowler hat and waxing this stupid moustache again today?"

Posted by LKJ | June 28, 2010 4:29 PM

was The Great Gatsby there??

Posted by Anonymous | June 28, 2010 5:26 PM

franz said he made no money in hold steady. wonder how he is doing here.

Posted by Anonymous | June 28, 2010 5:53 PM

AM! is really taking a giant shit on their "punk roots" by having that ass clown with the curly mustache in the band.

Nothing says rebellion like well groomed facial hair. Up the PUNX!

Posted by Anonymous | June 28, 2010 6:35 PM

i came for SSPU and they once again killed it. they really never disappoint. against me=underwhelm me. but the henry clay people (never heard of) were good. bordering on better than good at times i thought.

Posted by Anonymous | June 28, 2010 9:59 PM

photo overkill....

Posted by Anonymous | June 29, 2010 10:36 AM

anon 6:35: that "ass clown" has more punk cred than you and all your "punx" friends combined. do some research.

Posted by konstantin | June 29, 2010 10:42 AM

There is nothing remotely punk about this show/industry event.

At all.

OK, maybe the decorated vest. That looks "punk".

people keep asking, but i still haven't seen anyone respond:

HOW IS SECURITY GETTING IN THERE? Can you sneak anything in, even a flask? Were there a lot of people smoking (the weed)?

Posted by Anonymous | June 29, 2010 12:18 PM

if you smoke like i smoke, then you're high like every day.

Posted by Anonymous | June 29, 2010 5:21 PM

You take AMAZING photos!!! It's almost as if I was there. Love the SSPU pictures...can't wait to see them in Tempe in a couple of weeks.

who the hell still listens to Against Me!? Years ago, they were because of what they represented...and I know it goes without saying and it stopped being a relevant complaint years ago, but it still breaks my teenage rebel heart to see all they had to give up and leave behind to get where they are.

Posted by Anonymous | July 1, 2010 1:42 PM

Wow, sounds like all anyone ever does on this board is complain about how everything sucks. You guys SUCK.
