DOWNLOAD: Teenage Fanclub - Baby Lee (MP3)

Teenage Fanclub

"Dogged adherents of the "if it ain't broke" philosophy of music, the Glaswegian quartet have been plying their own brand of harmony-laden guitar pop for two decades and little changes here. Pedestrian? Yes. Derivative? Certainly. But an alchemy exists within the band allowing them to find something newly life-affirming in the most well-worn elements of their Byrds-indebted sound. Current single "Baby Lee" might be twee but boasts a melody so sunny it could persuade grown men to skip down the street. And among this record's bittersweet pleasures, drowsy closer "Today Never Ends" is porch music of a timeless kind." [Guardian]
Teenage Fanclub's new album, Shadows, was just released overseas in Europe (where they're touring at the moment in support of it). Merge Records puts the album out in the U.S., on June 8th (the last day of their UK tour). Download "Baby Lee" for free above.

In July and August, Teenage Fanclub will play some European festivals. In December they play the Belle & Sebastian-curated "Bowlie 2" ATP in Minehead. Before that they join their fellow Scots for a show in Brooklyn (and maybe a TBA tour?).

As promised, Belle & Sebastian are coming. They play the Williamsburg Waterfront in Brooklyn on September 30th with Teenage Fanclub. Tickets go on sale Friday at noon.

Anonymous pointed out that Matador is hosting their 21st anniversary festival in Las Vegas from October 1-3. That makes it seem very likely that Belle & Sebastian will play that too while they're visiting. Las Vegas Weekly reports...

...the host venue appears to be the Pearl at the Palms, according to a source with inside knowledge. And, yes, Pavement is set to headline, a figure close to the band has confirmed; the just-reunited '90s alt-luminaries play LA's Hollywood Bowl on Thursday, September 30, and will perform in Vegas that weekend... Oh, also on that Hollywood Bowl bill? The legendary Sonic Youth, whose latest album, 2009's The Eternal, was released by, ahem, Matador Records. Hmm...

well, that was a damn good way to make my day!

Posted by Anonymous | June 1, 2010 10:56 AM

the same price as pavement? i love both these bands but what the fuck.. whoever runs these paid waterfront shows is a greedy asshole

Posted by Anonymous | June 1, 2010 10:58 AM

Anon 10:58pm....did you just move from your parent's house in Ohio? Whenever bands like Belle and Sebastian play, it's at least $30. Go figure....its 2010.

Posted by Anonymous | June 1, 2010 11:01 AM

11:01, i've lived here my whole life--probably longer than you have, pal. you clearly have no idea what you're talking about--bigger bands have played here, even recently, for much lower prices. the fact that it is the SAME EXACT price as pavement suggests that this is a promoter raping fans rather than the bands getting money. so go back to posting on stereogum.

Posted by Anonymous | June 1, 2010 11:04 AM

You're an idiot 11:04am! Tell me what shows you're talking about? I need some proof....

Posted by Anonymous | June 1, 2010 11:08 AM

fans of this were born to be raped. stay in The Suburbs

Posted by Anonymous | June 1, 2010 11:14 AM

10/14 at DAR Constitution Hall in DC.

Posted by Born To Be Raped | June 1, 2010 11:22 AM

I saw Teenage Fanclub 15 years ago. I think it's about time for another run. Takes me back to 1992.

TEENAGE FANCLUB!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Posted by Anonymous | June 1, 2010 11:27 AM

TEENAGE FANCLUB!!!!!!!!!!

Posted by Anonymous | June 1, 2010 11:27 AM

is it doubly ironic that teenage fanclub's ironic name isn't ironic given their fan base?

Posted by Anonymous | June 1, 2010 11:33 AM

there aren't going to be any free pool party shows this summer aren't there?

Posted by Anonymous | June 1, 2010 12:43 PM

he same price as pavement? i love both these bands but what the fuck.. whoever runs these paid waterfront shows is a greedy asshole
>>

You mean Pavement , the band playing 4 other times in NYC vs one Belle & Sebastian show PLUS Teenage Fanclub....

Seems like a pretty fair price. B & S don't tour that often and their tickets have never been on the cheap side plus Teenage Fanclub is on the bill who tour even less frequently than B & S...not to mention they are both foreign bands with some big overhead costs (well B & S at least)
If its too expensive for you fair enough but I don't see it motivated by greed on anyone's part

..Now Weezer on the other hand.. :)

Posted by Anonymous | June 1, 2010 1:36 PM

Yes!

Posted by Anonymous | June 1, 2010 1:50 PM

holy scottish pop batman ! ... this rules !!

Posted by Anonymous | June 1, 2010 3:43 PM

well put 1:19.

Honestly, they could easily charge $50 for this and I wouldn't feel ripped off.

And this will sell out very quickly. Maybe we'll get extra lucky and they'll add another date.

Either way... I'm hitting up a few more of the east coast dates. Definitely the DC show mentioned below.

Posted by Anonymous | June 1, 2010 3:52 PM

I bet they will come back again for one or two nights in New York when they do a proper U.S. tour for the new album.

Posted by Anonymous | June 1, 2010 7:27 PM

anyone know the presale code?

Posted by Anonymous | June 2, 2010 12:42 PM

"anyone know the presale code?"

banchory

Posted by Anonymous | June 2, 2010 1:33 PM

Anyone else find it appalling that Ticketmaster seems to be the *only* place to buy tix for these? I've mostly learned to suck it up but when they slapped $17 of charges on a $37.50 Pavement ticket - that's nearly a 50% markup. I'm not saying I *wouldn't* pay $55 to see Pavement (I did) ... I'm just saying this kind of monopolistic price gouging should be illegal. And if there is a box office somewhere where you can get waterfront tickets, please let us know.

Posted by Anonymous | June 4, 2010 4:26 PM

nokia theatre is the box office. no fees there.

Posted by Anonymous | June 4, 2010 4:43 PM

Did not know that - thanks!

Posted by Anonymous | June 4, 2010 4:47 PM

does anyone know when teenage fanclub and belle and sebastian are set to go on at this show? ticketmaster says 5:30pm which i assume is when doors open.

Sept. 30 – Belle & Sebastian
*Since so many of you have written to find out about tomorrow’s show, YES, it’s still scheduled to go on, despite the impending monsoon. It will only be canceled if there’s thunder & lightning — since neither of which are even remotely twee.

Doors open at 5:30 and set times are as follows:

Teenage Fan Club 7 -745
Belle and Sebastian 8:15 – 9:45
