DOWNLOAD: Total Slacker - Crystal Necklace (AAC)

Total Slacker

Despite what their name might lead you to believe, Total Slacker are working hard the next few weeks with the release of their debut single and a string of local dates, starting tonight (6/21) opening for Indian Jewelry and Effi Briest at Mercury Lounge. They also play the Northside Festival on Saturday night (6/26) at Death By Audio that's being hosted by Impose and also features Frankie & the Outs, Lower Dens, Coasting, Sisters and more.

Impose is also putting out Total Slacker's 7" debut in two weeks, with new versions of "Crystal Necklace" and "Video Store Rental Guy" that you may have heard in demos that made their way around the interet earlier this year. You can check out the new version of "Crystal Necklace" above -- still hazy but slightly less sludgy. And "Video Store Rental Guy" shows off the band's noise rock tendencies (well on display when they play live), nearly hitting the 12-minute mark.

There's a July 6 Record Release show at Union Pool with Beach Fossils. All other Total Slacker dates are after the jump.

Posted by Anonymous | June 21, 2010 8:47 PM

to each their own - trashing bands anonymously that obviously work hard is a waste of time...why hate on people that are just in the end playing music / creating something out of nothing? if you don't like it, don't listen...however, that said - TOTAL SLACKER is a TOTAL EXCEPTION.

Posted by Anonymous | June 21, 2010 8:54 PM

these guys work really hard, but that's really their only redeeming quality

Posted by Anonymous | June 21, 2010 10:15 PM

Indian Jewelry was fucking loud and fucking awesome at Music Hall last night. Whatever band this is looks stupid

total slacker blows.

Posted by Anonymous | June 22, 2010 10:07 AM

From the comments above, I figured I'd check out the youtube vid above for a laugh. Anyone who thinks this is the WORST band in Brooklyn is fucking crazy. Don't get me wrong... i'm def. not a big fan of this band, but WORST band in Brooklyn? Come on...

WORST BAND IN BROOKLYN, LIKE A TRIP BACK TO YOUR 8th GRADE TALENT SHOW
>>>>>>>>>>>
yes!exactly.now you get it.

Posted by Anonymous | June 22, 2010 10:50 AM

This band is the ultimate realization of how miserable, disappointing and random the New York "scene" is. I never, ever, ever comment on Brooklynvegan anonymously but this band is the exception.

Excruciating social climbers who send the same worshipful form letter to all "popular" bands in a desperate attempt to get their non-songs on the bill.

Known for taking too much money and breaking gear.

DISGUSTING.

Posted by Anonymous | June 22, 2010 10:51 AM

Fuck these creeps.

Posted by Anonymous | June 22, 2010 10:52 AM

ah christ

Posted by Anonymous | June 22, 2010 10:56 AM

The singer's cousin is in the band Train, that's why they have so much hype. Good for them.

Posted by Anonymous | June 22, 2010 12:08 PM

^ ahh...all forgiven

Posted by Anonymous | June 22, 2010 12:21 PM

Are they really from NY, or have they just moved here from Boise Idaho?

Posted by Anonymous | June 22, 2010 12:29 PM

I downloaded the Total Slacker song. While it's a decent tune, the heavy reverb makes it unlistenable.

Posted by Regular reader | June 22, 2010 1:33 PM

this band is merciless Andy Kaufman level satire of all music bullshit and it's fucking awesome

Posted by Anonymous | June 22, 2010 1:55 PM

the main guy is a jazzbo slumming it with amateurs in a thus far successful bid for strumrock stardom

That was supposed to be Elmo FYI

Posted by Anonymous | June 22, 2010 4:13 PM

man, this is some serious bile... total slacker are incredibly fun live

Posted by j | June 22, 2010 5:31 PM

it's serious bile because you burn too many bridges coming out of the gate in a small, isolated scene and this is what you get - tolerance turning to outright hate.

Posted by Anonymous | June 22, 2010 5:48 PM

C'mon Pearis, you should know better than to get behind this 2nd wavve lo fi pablum.

Posted by wang chung | June 22, 2010 6:40 PM

fuck you, guys. total slacker is a great time and has always been. love these kids.

Posted by rachael | June 22, 2010 6:41 PM

MAKES ME HATE THE NEIGHBORHOOD I LIVE IN!!!!!!!! Music is dead!

Posted by Anonymous | June 22, 2010 9:05 PM

P.S. Shame on Brooklyn Vegan for posting this!

Posted by Anonymous | June 22, 2010 9:06 PM

Tuneless is the new black!

Posted by Crosseyed Sniper | June 22, 2010 9:20 PM

Total Slacker is just another example of the demise of the bklyn scene. They're ridiculous and should be ashamed of giving music such a bad name.

BOOOO!!!

Posted by Anonymous | June 23, 2010 12:21 AM

W.W.T.S.D.?

and the answer is SUCK

Posted by ROCK MAN | June 23, 2010 3:48 AM

Sources report that band in question showed up to Pitchforkmedia party and gave off a smell (literally). While this may fly in the Salt Lake City progressive jazz scene, an offending body odor does not fly in New York City.

TOTAL SLACKER STINKS (MUSICALLY, BUT ACTUALLY TOO)

Posted by Anonymous | June 23, 2010 4:30 AM

Everything smells fishy at a Pitchfork party...

Posted by Anonymous | June 23, 2010 6:18 AM

Probably the most hated band on the east coast. This makes me happy :)

Posted by Anonymous | June 23, 2010 9:10 AM

wait wait wait, we all know this band is vomit inducing, and that they steal gear and jump on shows and are kinda just assholes, but no one thus far has even talked about how much they just raped my eyes with that horrendous music video. why aren't we talking about this?! it's GODAWFUL

Posted by lb | June 23, 2010 6:47 PM

"This band is the ultimate realization of how miserable, disappointing and random the New York "scene" is. I never, ever, ever comment on Brooklynvegan anonymously but this band is the exception.

Amen. The perfect testament to how talent means nothing in this city, and social gaming means everything. I wonder how much their parents pay for their North Burg lofts, because morons like these obviously don't have day jobs.

Your second paragraph is too generous--it's more a matter of their knowing "important" people and having blogger friends than sending a letter.

Posted by Anonymous | June 23, 2010 7:33 PM

damn. this is really over the line.

these guys are mildly obnoxious in their scene climbing and finagling their way onto shows.

but what's been said here is just insanity. they're just a band. people here seem to want to scar them for life. It's internet terrorizing, plain and simple.

do you know why Brooklyn's scene is already a shadow of what it was last year or two years ago? because these comments on this page are fucking dark as hell and a lot of you out there are dumb enough to think what's said about people has jackshit anything to do with reality. get a life you shit talking net nerds.

why would anyone want to start a band or put on shows that might end up spoken about here?

btw, this song in the video is genuinely not bad and I didn't even think I liked this band

Posted by Anonymous | June 23, 2010 8:03 PM

scene climbing is what successful bands do, and that's not unique to Brooklyn

Posted by Anonymous | June 23, 2010 8:21 PM

yeah, but once you become successful you put yourself out there to be called on your bullshit if your music is totally insincere irredeemable hackery that has no intrinsic value and is just part of your attempt to fit in and have cool friends.. fuck this band

Posted by Anonymous | June 23, 2010 8:28 PM

since when is total slacker successful?

Posted by Anonymous | June 23, 2010 8:38 PM

scenes die when the people in them start propping up kings with no clothes.
maybe the harshness of this thread is a sign of that slow realization.

Posted by Anonymous | June 24, 2010 12:58 AM

no one except total slacker themselves has been propping up total slacker.

they're not being pushed by any of the clubs or promoters, they're just persistent about getting onto shows.

their shameless promotion is a bit tacky, but you can't claim that they're the beneficiaries of anyone "powerful" taking them under their wing and booking them all the time. it's not like they've gotten any special press treatment either.

how can you be angry at the tiny amount of attention these guys are getting, when completely untalented clowns like Cults blow up with no hard work or even decent tunes all the time.

Posted by Anonymous | June 24, 2010 12:12 PM

Ah, so pitchfork bestowing praise on Cults justifies Ian Astburyhatred, while wondering why BV (and others - Vice, L, etc) would give Total Slacker the time of day is picking on the little guy? Gotcha...

Posted by Anonymous | June 24, 2010 12:52 PM

^Ian Astbury? what weird google/autocorrect do you have on?

No girlfriends , No creations of your own . Stay in your darkened rooms hour after hour jerking it to porn and shut the hell up !
