"Equally enamored of darkly seductive vocalists like P.J. Harvey and Siouxsie Sioux and caustic, lo-fi production, Nika Roza Danilova stands alone on the modern musical landscape as Zola Jesus. Her records are both melodic and experimental as the classically trained former opera singer attempts to reconcile her disparate--and in some ways, opposing--influences: her affinity for '80s niche genres like power electronics and minimal synth, as well as mainstream pop singles. Danilova not only stumbles onto some bizarre points of intersection but manages a unique coherence on her debut LP, The Spoils, and recently released EP, Stridulum. Hard as it might be to believe given such artistic maturity, Danilova is still a 21-year-old student enrolled at the University of Wisconsin-Madison." [Minneapolis City Pages]Sacred Bones Records brought Amen Dunes, Nice Face, Effi Briest and their current star, Zola Jesus, to Glasslands in Brooklyn on Saturday night (June 19th). Zola Jesus had just been in Toronto and will be back in NYC in July. More pictures from the Glasslands show below...

Either someone is lying here or the poor girl has Progeria. 21 years old my ass she looked about 40 up there onstage from the back of the room. The show was ok but hardly as great as all the hype would make one believe. Her stage presence was awkward, her singing was ok, if she is a former opera singer i understand why it is former. What opera company other than the opera de la wackness would have a mildly talented freaking showboat as part of their company. I'm so sick of artists trying to make up for a lack of talent with a lot of flashy opulent "hey...look at me" gestures and actions.
Please change your name to "Zola Jesus fuckin christ I'm average"!

i don't get the hype regarding Zola Jesus. Musically, it's not bad (though not particuarly great), but the lyrics are atrocious! Her youth reveals itself pretty heavily there.
I saw her play in Toronto, but was disppointed both in her vocal limitations (she was really an opera singer?) and the (what seemed to me) forced nature of her performance. She seemed very awkward. Maybe it was an off show.
Perhaps I am unfairly expecting her to have the vocal intensity of Diamanda Galas, but I have been pretty underwhelmed by her studio and live stuff.

Just because Sacred Captured Bones puts something out doesn't mean it's good, but don't tell that to all their friends that run the blogs and shit.
You'd have to be an 18 yr. old goth dork to like this Zola crap.
I was there, NICE FACE was the real deal. Then I left.

I think this time there are too many pictures, seriously.

Glad you are not joking, Jerry. However you are not RAGINGLY ANGRY and/or Bitterly Sarcastic and Ironic for me to really a give a shit about your opinion. Please increase your feelings one way or the other. Following my example is welcome.
I loved the show, Zola Jesus was my favorite of the night. The full band seemed to inspire even stronger vocals.

^yeah, you would.
zola jesus= indie lady gaga (or gothgoth as the case may be). people just all wanna jump on board and feel like we all like the same things, we all agree.
sarcastic/ironic enough for you?

I am a ZJ fan. In this case I just think a little tighter editing of the photos from the show is appropriate. It sometimes seems like every shot the photog took gets posted.

zola jebus is better

Worse than bands in shorts is bands who are barefoot.

Am I the only one who thinks her vocals sound like Bonnie Tyler's?
It's true.
They do!
. . . and how about some DWARVES/TURBO A.C.'s/PSYCHOCHARGER photos?

björk still sucks.

Nice Face was pretty boring and the singer was making all of these ridiculous spastic jerking motions throughout the set, pretty lame.
Effi Briest was seriously one of the worst fucking bands I've ever seen live. I felt as if I was witnessing their first band practice or something. They were all playing as if each one of them was at a different show, no cohesion whatsoever. Lose the fucking BONGO player and the accordion/clarinet player for gods sake; just complete garbage. I suppose the guitarist didn't get the memo about dressing like a space vampire either.
Zola blew away the other bands in every way. Anyone who was digging Effi Briest more than Zola needs to get their fucking ears examined.

I really like Zola Jesus, I don't get why you guys are being so harsh. I thought the show was OK, though. The instrumentation was way too overwhelming for her vocals to come through. I thought that was unfair as I do believe she's got a great voice. Nice Face was good, Effi Briest was disappointing.

I was there, rather bored, and that wasn't effi briest's worst show, they're usually that bad.
Posted by Anonymous | June 23, 2010 10:40 PM
i like effi.
Posted by Anonymous | June 23, 2010 11:06 PM
Jesus Christ.
If, in order to play music, one had to play in front of you arms crossed, snarky twats then there would be absolutely no music in the world. Because who would even want to be in the same room as you people?

"I was there, rather bored, and that wasn't effi briest's worst show, they're usually that bad."

zola jesus were awesome at glasslands. & nika has a beautiful voice. not sure where all of this anger/ bitterness/ jealousy is coming from - a bunch of unintelligible critique. if you dont like zj, move on.
Posted by Anonymous | June 24, 2010 5:38 PM
It is terrible that this kind of bitter critique exists about a show like this. At least you get shows of this caliber in your city. Its offensive and completely plays into the Brooklyn stereotype. I can't imagine there's any live music that would please you, unless it was something ironic. Effi Briest is really great and those hating on them are probably threatened by any large group of unified females. At least they have the courage and conviction to get up and play instead of just sniping smarm from the back of the room, arms crossed. You guys are like the hipster version of the girls from VH1's You're Cut Off... Spoiled and delusional.
