Best Coast @ the Seaport July 23rd...
Best Coast

One of the potentially rainy concerts this past weekend that made it through the weather was the free South Street Seaport show on Friday, July 23rd with Best Coast and Free Energy. Free Energy wrapped up right before the rain came down (Modest Mouse across the river was not so lucky).

Best Coast, which featured new drummer Ali Koehler, will be back at the end of September as part of their tour with Male Bonding. Brooklyn's Loose Limbs opened.

One day Best Coast will get a better drummer. Ali is a sweetheart and has personality and is a poor weak-ass drummer.

Just assume "So many bad tattoo's" on every post. Jeez.

That chick has dreadful skin - She should use proactive...

Everyone who left after Best Coast fucked up, Free Energy was awesome and the impending storm only made it better. Great show, especially for free.

Free Energy's record is really good, but I have not seen them live yet. Not that it matters, but for the record those guys look like real douchebags.

Posted by Anonymous | July 26, 2010 2:19 PM

free energy is terrible. you guys are joking right?

Posted by Anonymous | July 26, 2010 2:36 PM

Bethany is awesome

Posted by Anonymous | July 26, 2010 2:38 PM

Hey 2:19 - I thought I was the only one who loved hippies!

Posted by Anonymous | July 26, 2010 2:46 PM

I was there and that drummer didn't look like Ali unless she dyed her hair and lost like 100 pounds.

And yes, Free Energy SUCKED! Those who left after Best Coast were right on!

That Best Coast record is pretty underwhelming (see: boring, bad).

Posted by Anonymous | July 26, 2010 3:58 PM

Best Coast were pretty boring, but Free Energy were just absolutely terrible. I couldnt bear listening to them.

Posted by Anonymous | July 26, 2010 4:18 PM

show wasn't nearly as good as the beach fossils one a few weeks ago

Posted by Anonymous | July 26, 2010 4:22 PM

best coast is terrible. it's like she's not even working on her music. every song is fucking 3 chords and no melody. good to see severe mediocrity can lead to hipster success.

Some nice photos...

While Best Coast sounded perfectly competent, the singer really made me dislike them. "This next song is on our album that's out on Tuesday...buy it, or download it...or not...whatever..." Really? Would it hurt to be halfway enthused over performing? Is your life really that boring that you have to be so apathetic towards everyone/thing? C'mon.

On the other end of the spectrum, Free Energy grabbed your attention and would let you go till the very end. So awesome. Happy Birthday to me.

Free Energy is fucking terrible. Best Coast is fucking boring. NY is fucking depressing.

Posted by Anonymous | July 26, 2010 5:13 PM

You're unfeminist if you don't like Best Coast

Posted by Anonymous | July 26, 2010 5:19 PM

marry me chris la putt.

Wish that Best Coast inspired as much vitriol as Vivian Girls did around this time last summer/spring. Every time they would go up, the haters would come out. If its possible, I think Best Coast is much worse but I think that Vivian Girls got there first in terms of derivative, atonal hipster detritus that just gets a pass because there are chicks doing it. That said, I'd hit it.

I absolutely refuse to believe that anyone saying anything positive about Free Energy isn't working for them.

Posted by Anonymous | July 27, 2010 12:29 AM

If they changed their name to "Free Hummus" I think they would get more fans.

Bethany is lucky she is cute and stylish. Best Coast is vapid, uninspired and as others have said, boring.

Also, Pocahaunted is offensively bad, not only because of the way they sound but because of their exploitation of Native American culture. They are like the Washington Redskins of the indie scene. Hipsters wearing face-paint and Indian headdresses is callous and detached, no matter how much mushrooms or mescaline you eat. Maybe if they did more of that they'd realize. http://img17.imageshack.us/img17/6325/hipsterindianssmall.jpg

Use your own culture, and if you do and your music videos end up starring Ronald McDonald, then don't bother.

Bad skin isn't that easy to get rid of, you jerk-off. The new Best Coast record isn't reinventing the wheel but it's fun power-pop.

So this crap group thinks that they need a show at MHOW and Bowery ballroom on consecutive days? Man oh man, The Beatles of this crap genre (Waaaaaavvvvvvvvvvvvvveeeeeeesssss) cant even find 500 basterds to sell out Bowery next week, and we are currently on the crest of the chill wave.
