"WHY? at the waterfront was absolutely fantastic. Best time I've seen them. Fang Island shredded too!" - The Tape

"Meet Senator Chuck Schumer" @ the July 11th Pool Party (Ruthie_FF)
Chuck Schumer

Pool Party champion Charles E. Schumer allowed people to ironically pose with him at the first of seven Pool Parties at the Williamsburg Waterfront on Sunday. Did you meet Chuck?

Sets of music were played by Why?, Fang Island, Pictureplane, and Xiu Xiu/Deerhoof combined to form a Joy Division cover band. Unfortunately there was no world cup viewing at the venue which definitely kept lots of people away. More photos and info on the show coming later. A few videos are below, and here's one more picture for now:

July 18th's Pool Party will feature free sets of music by Murder City Devils, Obits, Jeff the Brotherhood and Silverghost. Some videos from July 11th below...

Line long? You're either pathetically pampered and entitled (my bet) or weren't there

Posted by Anonymous | July 12, 2010 2:08 AM

no matter what still better than energy-less version of shadowplay by the killers. some albums should just be left alone.

Posted by Anonymous | July 12, 2010 2:32 AM

It was a fun time...well, in a melancholy way.

yeah but imagine once it's a band/act/gucci mane that people want to see? Of course this week wasn't too packed, they were smart to book an opening show without too much draw, let's see how they do in future weeks...

Posted by Anonymous | July 12, 2010 6:46 AM

people moshing to joy division was a total bummer but the show was fucking awesome. glad most of the complainers stayed home. can't wait for mcd next week!

Posted by Anonymous | July 12, 2010 7:05 AM

It was great when Schumer was making the speech and when he started talking about playing basketball or something it just cut out and then the only thing that was said over the loud speakers was "Have a good time"....which all speeches that I didnt want to hear were like that

Posted by Anonymous | July 12, 2010 7:07 AM

@7:05

yer a twat. Joy Division was still a punk band, and people used to mosh at their shows all the time.

Posted by Anonymous | July 12, 2010 7:59 AM

hmm... maybe everyone missed the part where schumer was heckled but some douche in front screaming "free palestine". he couldn't make the speech he wanted to make because of that... so he just got off the stage.

Posted by Anonymous | July 12, 2010 8:01 AM

"lol at person saying the state should get rid of them because they waited in line too long for whatever stupid beverage or food they were purchasing. get bent"

Sounds like someone can't afford to buy a beer at a show. Sucks to be you.

Note: I was not there.

Posted by Anonymous | July 12, 2010 8:03 AM

@7:59 people didn't "mosh" in 70s england. that was a later development ("slam-dancing" it was called then). so, no, that didn't happen at Joy Division shows.

Posted by Anonymous | July 12, 2010 8:45 AM

NICE CONDOS

Posted by Anonymous | July 12, 2010 8:59 AM

Lots of fun. There were no long lines. $6 for a small cup of beer though? And when you ask me to tip both the person I buy the beer ticket from and the person that hands me my beer, I tip neither.

Posted by Anonymous | July 12, 2010 9:11 AM

Went to this show. Dude, the lines were not that insurmountable. I waited in line a while too, but it moved rather quickly. Very orderly and I was in with say 10 minutes. What do you expect?! It's free. Some of you people will find anything, and everything, to complain about. Complaints about something that is absolutely free. I've got a fix for you...stay home next time. Watch concert vids on youtube. You won't have to wait in line for that. Get rid of these? Because you don't want to wait in the line? Eat one.

As for the show, Fang Island rocked it. Nice to see some folks who aren't afraid to noodle on the guitars a bit these days. Why was solid, and Xiu Xiu + Deerhoof was very nice as well. Again, it was free...not bad for something that asked nothing more than you to make the choice of whether or not you wanted to be in attendance.

Really good show, really crappy promoter. Also, they need to pick a door time and fucking stick to it. To guarantee entry, you gotta get there early. But then they open the door at 2:50 or some shit, and they've got a million people hanging out outside. Also, good looks burying dodgeball, and every other garbage activity as far away from the stage as possible.

Posted by Anonymous | July 12, 2010 9:48 AM

Oh Charlie; can't escape that 'doucheness' can ya?

Posted by Anonymous | July 12, 2010 9:52 AM

@9:48-
What do you mean get there early to guarantee entry? I got there right before XiuHoof and walked right in with no line. It was fine.

Bring back the Cafe Bustelo stand, though

Posted by Boz Boorer | July 12, 2010 9:57 AM

Wonder if the heckler met Schumer? Was probably too much of a coward. Easier to just yell.

Posted by Anonymous | July 12, 2010 10:01 AM

That site holds like 10,000 people or something. You don't need to get there early to gain entry. It was about half-full for most of the day until the World Cup ended and then it was 2/3 full.

Posted by Anonymous | July 12, 2010 10:07 AM

the heckler was some fat dude with a bad haircut. and some girl who was working the show called him out for being such a douche. pretty interesting scene.

here's an idea, if you don't agree with the politics of the guy responsible for putting on the VERY SHOW YOU'RE AT, protest OUTSIDE and don't support the show at all.

Posted by Anonymous | July 12, 2010 10:19 AM

it was a good show, and agree with everyone that says stop bitching. it's FREE!! And let's enjoy these while we can, when those multi-million dollar condos get finished, there is NO chance that the residents are gonna stand for a bunch of noisy rock shows all summer in what they will consider 'their' park. Sad but true, so really, chill out, enjoy some free music, cause it ain't gonna last. i hope i'm wrong, but i don't think i will be...

Posted by Anonymous | July 12, 2010 10:59 AM

You have to get there to GUARANTEE entry. Sure, in a situation like yesterday (headliner that doesn't get a lot of support, World Cup match happening at the same time, potential rain), then yeah, you can get in up to the last minute.

But, let's say that there was no world cup game. Or the weather was better. Any number of things affect the attendance at the shows, both helping and hurting. The fact of the matter is that some people want to get there at door time, to avoid a potential wasted trip. Having an inconsistent door time is fucking amateur hour.

Posted by Anonymous | July 12, 2010 2:57 PM

Did I miss it or has Jelly not announced the Saturday shows yet?

Posted by Anonymous | July 12, 2010 3:36 PM

@9:11 AM

"And when you ask me to tip both the person I buy the beer ticket from and the person that hands me my beer, I tip neither."

No one is asking you to give multiple tips for a single service. Some people find it easier to tip when they have their money out to buy a drink ticket. Some people like to tip their servers. Makes sense to have a tip jar in both locations.

If you want to be stingy and not tip anybody, that's up to you.

Posted by Anonymous | July 12, 2010 3:55 PM

^ why should anyone be tipped? just pay them i living wage.

Posted by Anonymous | July 12, 2010 4:35 PM

"No one is asking you to give multiple tips for a single service."

Do you seriously believe that they don't intend to get you to tip them at both points? Of course they do. That's why there are tip jars at both points.

Posted by Anonymous | July 12, 2010 4:38 PM

@Anon1:37pm - I'm glad somebody got Picture Plane's "dancers" cuz I really didn't get them at all. Silly and distracting.

Posted by Anonymous | July 12, 2010 4:53 PM

dear lord, almost empty!

Posted by Anonymous | July 12, 2010 5:08 PM

chuck schumer is a tool. i'd be a happy man if he dropped dead.

Posted by Anonymous | July 12, 2010 6:57 PM

Remember Schumer's stance on Waco. D-bag for real.

Posted by Anonymous | July 12, 2010 7:45 PM

i am so fucking glad hipsters only survive in the u.s. you are skinny and ugly brats. if you like joy division you should have been born 20 years earlier. be a real punk or don't be at all. bad luck, hipster kiddies. go home to do it with your mommies.

Posted by Anonymous | July 12, 2010 7:51 PM

yeah! why dontcha just be born 20 years earlier already!

Posted by Anonymous | July 13, 2010 4:23 AM

I thought it was great someone interupted war monger Schumers speech.

I love the, dont bring politics to a music show as if its another 'free speech' zone.

you're part of the problem. read up on Palestine, on Iraq on what our govt is supporting day in and day out and stop blubbering about how 'they hate our freedoms'

PICTUREPLANE 4 LIFE

Posted by Anonymous | July 14, 2010 4:07 PM

At the expense our ever diminishing liberties and monies extracted by force of incarceration and or violence, Up-chuck and Schum of his ilk will continue to be re-elected by indidivuals who'd vote for anything with a "Jackass" preceding their name.

Posted by Doomstoned | July 15, 2010 9:30 PM

that some people here took time to post glib comments against the heckler/activist is gross. bunch of sick hipsters (and on brkklyn vegan!)

great guy stood up for something real and not just their image.

'punk' as an accessory is sickening too.

too many hipster (self-)marketeers.

get real and engaged.
