Guided by Voices classic lineup
Guided by Voices

Tickets are now were on AmEx presale (sold out) for the Guided by Voices show at Terminal 5. General sale start Friday at noon. The Philly show, happening one night earlier, is sold out.

All dates on the upcoming Guided by Voices tour will feature the "classic lineup" of the band. That means no Doug Gillard who you can catch instead, as Bill pointed out, at Bruar Falls on July 23rd. The Brooklyn show is his only upcoming date before he goes to Germany. His only scheduled show after he gets back happens at the Rock Shop on August 26th. That show is with The Norfolk Downs and Bill Goffrier (of Big Dipper & The Embarrassment). All Doug dates and a live video below...

The GBV tickets don't actually seem to be on presale. Unless they all sold out in five minutes yesterday, since I first tried at 12:05.

no Gillard = no care

Posted by JT | July 22, 2010 1:15 PM

I am glad everyone is excited to see GBV but I just don't get this band. Everyone raves about Bee Thousand I listened to it 2 times and it was a major struggle to get through and a big let down. I admit it this band goes way over my head just like NMH!

Posted by Anonymous | July 22, 2010 1:20 PM

Don't worry about it, 1:20, you probably just don't have good taste. Not a big deal.

Posted by Anonymous | July 22, 2010 1:25 PM

Just because someone doesn't like GBV it doesn't mean they lake taste. Maybe they like quality over quantity. For every 1 good GBV song there are 30 not so good.

Posted by Anonymous | July 22, 2010 1:27 PM

lack...not lake..though lake is fun in summer..

Posted by Anonymous | July 22, 2010 1:27 PM

GBV..some of the fastest cds I bought that went to the used cd shop...I agree 1:20

Posted by Anonymous | July 22, 2010 1:30 PM

1:25 musicsnobbery.com in disguise?

Posted by Anonymous | July 22, 2010 1:34 PM

and GBV have a song called Back To The Lake..

I really like Doug's playing but if you ever saw GBV with this line up playing bee thousand / alien lanes songs (like i was lucky / old enough to..) than you know you are in for a treat.. they are more geared to that era's material... as far as not getting GBV.. thats your opinion but I can't see what importance it has to state that here.

Posted by Anonymous | July 22, 2010 1:35 PM

1:35..I just don't get the hype with GBV that is all I am trying to say...

Posted by Anonymous | July 22, 2010 1:37 PM

1:14, tickets went on sale yesterday. The presale sold out in about one minute.

Posted by Anonymous | July 22, 2010 1:38 PM

Forget it 1.37. Personally, I disagree with you, but there's no respect for peoples' varying tastes on this board, so don't waste your time.

Posted by Anonymous | July 22, 2010 1:40 PM

I really hope they add other shows...at different venues. Hint, Hint Todd @ Maxwells...

Posted by Anonymous | July 22, 2010 1:40 PM

1:40..so true but thanks for being civilized!

Posted by Anonymous | July 22, 2010 1:42 PM

Doug playing w/ Bill Goffrier sounds pretty damned good.

Big Dipper opened for the last Boston show Pollard played, and word is that Gary Waliek is working w/ Pollard on some recordings.

Posted by Anonymous | July 22, 2010 1:44 PM

Why does this have to be at Terminal 5? Why??

Posted by Will | July 22, 2010 1:50 PM

Thanks 1:38. Seriously, I was on five minutes after they went on sale (actually 11:05). Guess people don't hate T5 that much! I thought all of youz were goin to Philly?

Posted by Anonymous | July 22, 2010 1:52 PM

this tour will never hit maxwell's.
it's a money grab.

Posted by Anonymous | July 22, 2010 1:55 PM

1:55...yup.

Posted by Anonymous | July 22, 2010 1:56 PM

could be an added show at T5 i suppose, since it's the last scheduled one of the tour.

Posted by Anonymous | July 22, 2010 2:00 PM

I live in Philly and rode my bike to the Troc box office the day tix went on sale. Only 100 tix remained when I got there, a couple hours after they went on sale. I can only imagine that the NYC show will sell out instantly. Hopefully they'll add another show or two for you guys.

Posted by Anonymous | July 22, 2010 2:00 PM

2:00 after night one sells out 2nd will probably be added at T5..that's my guess!

Posted by Anonymous | July 22, 2010 2:02 PM

"a money grab"

no shit

and you know what? they deserve it...

If people bitch and moan about one of the greatest songwriters alive right to (gasp!) earn a living by playing a three hour show, well I don't what what to tell you

have fun crying at the Arcade Fire show when the sing "Wake Up" (and 15 other shit songs)

Posted by Anonymous | July 22, 2010 2:02 PM

Enjoy "I am a Tree" or "I am a Scientist" deep stuff..I will take "Wake Up" instead...

Posted by Anonymous | July 22, 2010 2:06 PM

You act as if life is one big hummus joke!

Posted by Anonymous | July 22, 2010 2:07 PM

You can make money and not play shit venues, many have been doing it for years.

Posted by Anonymous | July 22, 2010 2:11 PM

"Enjoy "I am a Tree" or "I am a Scientist" deep stuff..I will take "Wake Up" instead..."

wow, just wow

Posted by Anonymous | July 22, 2010 2:15 PM

It's not really a money grab. Tickets for the tour have been priced between $20-$28 and the tour is only a month long. They could easily charge double that and still sell most of the dates out. They won't be like the Pixies, who are still touring six years later without releasing any new material.

Posted by Anonymous | July 22, 2010 2:15 PM

"Enjoy "I am a Tree" or "I am a Scientist" deep stuff..I will take "Wake Up" instead..."

I like both bands, but I don't like you...you're an idiot.

Posted by Anonymous | July 22, 2010 2:16 PM

2:15.. Win Butler is a more consistant writter then Pollard..Pollard has some great songs but has too much fluff in the catelog..Win does have a long way to go in terms of longevity though I will give him that.

Posted by Anonymous | July 22, 2010 2:17 PM

2:17.. Win Butler is consistently mediocre

Posted by Anonymous | July 22, 2010 2:21 PM

"I am a Tree"

written by Gillard

Posted by Anonymous | July 22, 2010 2:23 PM

"2:17.. Win Butler is consistently mediocre"

thank you

the guy can't write lyrics for shit. It really is pathetic that 40,000 sheep in NYC would go to MSG for the same schtick they were doing 5 years ago. Maybe his wife will do more robot dance moves! She's so awesome!

Posted by Anonymous | July 22, 2010 2:27 PM

AMEX presale was a joke, nothing left at 11:01???

Better luck tomorrow.

8 ticket limit per person is just inviting the scalpers along for the ride. 4/person seems more sensible.

Posted by smack | July 22, 2010 2:36 PM

2:27 sounds like GBV has pleanty of sheep too. Everytime I have seen GBV it was empty now all of a sudden the shows are a hot ticket...what has changed? People are just going blindly because GBV are a buzz band among the hipsters..sure there are a handfull of those who were there back in the day but most people going are not GBV but sheep.

Posted by Anonymous | July 22, 2010 2:40 PM

not into GBV but sheep..

Posted by Anonymous | July 22, 2010 2:42 PM

so which one is cooler then?

Posted by Anonymous | July 22, 2010 2:51 PM

Yeah, I guess instead of releasing a bunch of great songs between 1994 and 1996 and a few bummers GBV should have just one released one album called Under the Bee Lanes 1000 with 15 songs, thrown the rest in the garbage and then stayed at home and jerked off while reading reviews about how "consistent" they are.

Posted by Anonymous | July 22, 2010 3:08 PM

3:08 They would be a better band then!

Posted by Anonymous | July 22, 2010 3:16 PM

amex presale was 20% of the venue, so only 700 tiks or so.

Posted by Anonymous | July 22, 2010 3:25 PM

they also used to come through town at least a couple of times every year. so it wasn't a big deal to miss a show as they'd be back in six months.

Posted by Anonymous | July 22, 2010 3:25 PM

overrated band. don't understand all the hype when this band could barely sell out bowery.

Posted by Anonymous | July 22, 2010 3:25 PM

Well, GBV sold out their last three shows at Irving Plaza and they'll sell out this one at Terminal 5, so I think it's pretty safe to say they could sell out the Bowery.

Posted by Anonymous | July 22, 2010 3:32 PM

i was at their last bowery show in 4/2004. Sold out.

Posted by Anonymous | July 22, 2010 3:34 PM

overrated band. don't understand all the hype when this band could barely sell out bowery.

please tell me when this happened ? I saw GBV about 8 times in NYC from 95 to 2004.. they were always sold out..mostly at Irving Plaza..sometimes multiple nights.. maybe you are thinking of Pollard solo ?

Posted by Anonymous | July 22, 2010 3:34 PM

Yeah, that Boston Spaceships show at Highline was pretty thin

Posted by Anonymous | July 22, 2010 3:43 PM

And I remember seeing them at the Paradise in like 93 or 94 and the place was PACKED

Posted by Anonymous | July 22, 2010 3:45 PM

The Highline and Bowery Ballroom Bob shows were far from sell outs but his first solo show at Irving had more than enough people to sell out a Bowery show.

Posted by Anonymous | July 22, 2010 3:46 PM

Saw GBV for free at Penn State back in 99 at the Field Day Fest max there were 200 people there. Saw GBV another time maybe 300 people were there.

Posted by Anonymous | July 22, 2010 4:10 PM

we aren't talking about free college shows in PA....
those aren't real shows...

Posted by Anonymous | July 22, 2010 4:27 PM

2:40 So, how many times did you see them prior to '96, then?

A "buzz band for hipsters?" That alone signifies the cluelessness of your post.

Furthermore, the majority of the talk here seems to be confusing the lousy Aughts-model GbV with the stunning live shows of the classic lineup years. GbV went off the rails in 1997, folks, and if that's all you ever saw then no wonder you don't understand the point of this tour.

Posted by LKJ | July 22, 2010 4:27 PM

I guess I don't understand. Gillard was still with the band when I saw them. 4:27 if that is the case then they obviously don't try hard enough...

As far as buzz band for hipster how many people attending the show at T5 are familiar with their catelog? Most are going because they saw Bee Thousand was on a list of great alt albums or they heard of their name..

Posted by Anonymous | July 22, 2010 4:47 PM

They should play Earthquake Glue or Under The Bushes, Under The Stars in their entirety!

Posted by MP | July 22, 2010 5:09 PM

Good albums, 5:09

but Mag Earwhig! is the shit. Hands down.

Posted by Anonymous | July 22, 2010 5:11 PM

5:11 - i'm glad to see another lover of Mag Earwhig. very underrated album, I do hope they pull some gems off of there for the show in november.

Posted by Anonymous | July 22, 2010 6:36 PM

4:47, I am trying to say that the Gillard years were the weakest part of the GbV lifecycle.

Posted by LKJ | July 22, 2010 7:17 PM

5:09 - 6:36

The official word was that it would all be UTBUTS and earlier material...

And for the half-wits on here, I think Bob said it best: "What shitty band are you in?"

Posted by Anonymous | July 22, 2010 7:23 PM

mag earwhig is truly the shit in an otherwise amazingly brilliant catalog

Posted by Anonymous | July 23, 2010 6:37 PM

I can't believe NYC show already sold out. Now I have to buy a ticket from a scalper before those tickets are gone, too. dammit!

Posted by Chuck | July 25, 2010 12:31 AM

Sorry, people, mag earwhig is where GBV started to fall apart. Bring on the classic line-up!
