Helmet

Ask me about some of my favorite albums of the 90s and you'll surely get a Helmet record in there. Henry Bogdan, John Stanier (who went to Tomahawk and then Battles), and even Chris Traynor are long gone now, and a new version of the band (with Page Hamilton alongside a trio of new members) will release a seventh LP Seeing Eye Dog. That LP is due in late August, and Helmet will hit the road shortly after for a string of dates that will include Gramercy Theatre in NYC on October 23rd. Tickets go on sale at noon on Wed (7/21).

Seeing Eye Dog is currently up for presale via the band in various forms (CD, vinyl, with a tee, with a laminate, etc etc). Stream a few new songs from the record at the Helmet site.

What's up with Gramercy Theatre? Seems like it's the venue of choice for "come back" or flash back bands. Is that purposeful? Or is it a second tier booker?

Helmet is a great flash back if there ever was one.

is it really helmet without stanier? nope, it's not. it's gandhi.

9:05 is right. Helmet died when Stanier left.

i will have to agree.

an old friend is their touring bassist now, though.

Posted by Anonymous | July 21, 2010 9:46 AM

i love grammercy theater.

Posted by Anonymous | July 21, 2010 10:06 AM

love helmet but last tour and cd was very disappointing

Posted by Anonymous | July 21, 2010 10:08 AM

yeah, Gramercy is a pretty good venue. don't know why they don't book more good shows there

Helmet was great. This isn't Helmet though.

They should open for Matt & Kim.

I was excited to see this listing but something about the tunes isn't gelling with me. Maybe I just like the vocals burried in the mix like the old records.

I saw Helmet with Ministry and Sepultura in 92 or 93. Now THAT shit was amazing.

I saw Helmet again a few years back, once at Bowery and again at Irving Plaza. I have to say, even though it isn't the same without the other members, it was still a good way to spend an evening.

HelMEHt

(someone had to say it.)

Posted by Anonymous | July 21, 2010 10:38 AM

How can a band with only 1 original member still call itself Helmet? It's the Page Hamilton Band now.

@ 10:37 - Helmet/Sepultura/Ministry WAS amazing. I got thrown out buy like 6 security guards for going ape shit during Ministry. It was fucking awesome!

HOW CAN HELMET NOT PLAY MINNEAPOLIS??????

Posted by DeadDoug | July 21, 2010 11:05 AM

I'd rather listen to Strap It On and maybe Meantime at home. There's no compelling reason for me to attend this show.

As much as I love their back catalogue, I can't pony up almost $30 to see what is essentially a Helmet cover band.

IN THE FUCKING MEANTIME!

Posted by Anonymous | July 21, 2010 2:29 PM

I saw Helmet last year at the Double Door in Chicago with this lineup (I Think), and they F'n smoked. Old lineup, new lineup, I've seen both. At the end of the day the songs are great and Paige is one of the most criminally underrated guitarists.. for ever. I'll be back in Chicago

Posted by Krylon | July 21, 2010 3:04 PM

10:37 I saw that tour too. Amazing.

Posted by Anonymous | July 21, 2010 3:33 PM

@ 10:37 - Sepultura with MAX! too. That show was badass. I remember when Sepultura came out and Max screamed "Destroyyyyy this fucking place!!!!!!"

Posted by Anonymous | July 21, 2010 3:49 PM

FYI -- you can get tickets to the show now on the band's website, which includes a download of the record on street date. pretty sweet. just got mine. http://helmetmusic.com

LP 4 from Helmet was awful. LPs 5 & 6 were laughably horrendous. Something tells me LP 7 will be even shittier. I heard they sound great playing the old stuff live, but who cares? It's worth it for kids who never saw 'em back in the day, but for an oldster like me it's a no go show.
