Governors Island

The music is/was great, but part of the reason I trekked out to see Passion Pit, Tokyo Police Club, We Were Promised Jetpacks & Suckers on Governors Island on Wednesday night (June 30th), especially after having just seen 3/4 of the bill one night earlier in Prospect Park, was to check out Colonel's Row, the area where the show was actually being held.

Unlike "The Beach" where most of the Governors Island concerts are held, there was no sand - just lots of beautiful trees and grass and old buildings on either side. It was a lot like a college campus. The sound was great, the weather was great, and despite the approx-7000 capacity, it wasn't too crowded at all (though the lines for the ATMs were super long). The sides were lined with food vendors (mostly gross-looking food) and there were lots of bars set up all over. I wish they would do more shows there actually (Passion Pit is unfortunately the only one happening in the space this summer).

Another reason I was really motivated to take the ferry was to see We Were Promised Jetpacks who didn't play Prospect Park the night before. The Scottish band did a great job warming up the crowd with their wailing vocals, wall of guitar sounds, and tension-building rock songs. Many in the young audience cheered along, though the excitement that the three openers experienced didn't come close to what I saw two nights in a row for Passion Pit who had thousands of people cheering, dancing and just generally going crazy to their falsetto-fronted dance songs.

I unfortunately had to leave Passion Pit early this time to catch Delta Spirit at Bowery Ballroom, but photographer Andrew St. Clair not only stayed for the whole show, he stuck around afterward for the backstage karaoke afterparty (the show was the final stop on TPC & PP's tour together). Andrew's pictures from the whole night, below...

unpleasant APW flashbacks. especially with expensive merch and the gyro huts.

WWPJ should've headlined this.

rich cohen is a rock star.

Posted by Anonymous | July 2, 2010 4:53 PM

mark knight is the real star. Cohen's spotlight runs dim.

there was a MOB rushing to the ferry after the show! everyone jumped the barricades and swarmed past the security guards!

I feel bad for Tokyo Police Club. Touted as the "next big thing" only to be eclipsed by a band managed by the same manager in less than 12 months. They definitely put on a good game face but I wonder how they really feel only being able to headline a 1,500 capacity venue in nyc when PP did 13,000 in 2 nights.

Sad sad sad. I wonder how the girl in the pink sneakers in photo 1 feels about it?

If you paid $30 for a Tokyo Police Club T please leave NY right now.

Posted by Anonymous | July 2, 2010 5:38 PM

This is a joke, and so are shows on Gov's Island. Take the ferry out of NYC Bowery and take your high ticket prices with you

Posted by Anonymous | July 2, 2010 6:59 PM

Even though Suckers suck, I thought that the under 40 dollar ticket price was pretty damn reasonable for 4 bands (three of them great). I would have paid that much for any one of the three.

something so fucking annoying about passion pit. their audience looks god awful. but I'm an old curmudgeon so c'est la vie

Posted by Anonymous | July 2, 2010 8:05 PM

whiney ass old curmudgeons are the worst people to have at your shows.

Posted by Anonymous | July 2, 2010 8:53 PM

great photos. gey band.

Posted by Anonymous | July 2, 2010 8:54 PM

Who was paying attention to her feet to notice she had pink sneakers on?

Posted by Anonymous | July 2, 2010 10:28 PM

he went back looking for a way to differentiate her from the other 3 girls

Posted by Anonymous | July 2, 2010 11:12 PM

great photos. not gey band.

Posted by Anonymous | July 2, 2010 11:50 PM

what a fun show! suckers sucked (sorry im not a fan of their sound). but the other three were fantastic! i didnt mind the price because every passion pit show is around that price, in nyc or on an island that is a 3 minute ferry ride away from nyc

5:37 PM - you know WAY too much about the ins and outs of managerial squabbles among these bands to be an innocent outsider commenting. Soooo... who do you work for?

Posted by Anonymous | July 3, 2010 4:42 AM

My name is sam. I am king of williamsburg

"I feel bad for Tokyo Police Club. "

Feel bad for them???????? What a cynical fuct up point of view!

I feel like TPC are extremely lucky, and probably thankful, for the opportunity to get to tour with Passion Pit. They play to packed houses each night and the bands look like they are great friends. Just because Passion Pit became big quickly doesn't mean Tokyo Police club are bitter about it. If anything, they hit the lottery that they got to be associated with all of it.

Posted by Anonymous | July 3, 2010 1:34 PM

Could you take any more pictures of passion spit? Fuck! did they pay you or was it simply favoritism on your part mr. cameraman?

Posted by Anonymous | July 3, 2010 4:51 PM

Passion spit? Do better.

Posted by Anonymous | July 3, 2010 5:18 PM

i absolutely loved the show! it was sooooo good. i wish i was in more picture though haha :P

Posted by the girl in the red and white striped shirt | July 4, 2010 12:04 AM

passion pit are fucking terrible

Posted by Anonymous | July 4, 2010 2:00 AM

glad to see they had hummus as a food option, however.

Posted by Anonymous | July 4, 2010 2:30 AM

I went to the show primarily to see We Were Promised Jetbacks, who were great. I thought Tokyo Police Club were pretty solid. Passion Pit? I don't get why they are so popular. Left midway through their set.

Posted by Anonymous | July 4, 2010 9:41 AM

fantastic photos! cool jump shot

Posted by Anonymous | July 4, 2010 1:59 PM

Lots of nerds in the band equals lots of nerds watching them.

Wonderful post and the location is beautiful and elegant in design and information and everything>>> to Favorites
Amazing is an enormous understatement. One of the best electronic shows I've ever been to and I've seen well over a thousand concerts. I had no idea Vladislav Delay was as good a drummer & percussionist as he is- fabulous and he kept everything swinging with a very unique style of playing. If you missed this you missed out big time...
