She and Him show

Last night (7/6) She & Him played a sold out show at Terminal 5. The show was the fourth of fourteen stops on their Summer 2010 tour which also included a free show at Governors Island on the 4th of July.

Not long after the doors had opened, the 3,000+ person venue was crowded with concert goers unwilling to stand outside in the near 100 degree heatwave. The audience was full of women wearing light-colored knee-length sundresses in the style of actress and She & Him member Zooey Deschanel.

At 8 p.m., comedian Eugene Mirman took the stage, asking the audience how many of them were aware that the opening act was a comedian and not a musician. While the crowd did not seem particularly impressed with the jokes told during Mirman's 30 minute set, he managed to win over people towards the front of the stage by handing out business cards with ridiculous slogans.

At 9 p.m., She & Him walked on stage to thunderous applause and excitement. For most of their performance, backup vocals were provided by Lily and Abigail Chapin, 2/3rds of the folk-pop group The Chapin Sisters.

Halfway through the set, Zooey Deschanel took a moment to discuss a pet peeve with the audience. "Do you guys know how to turn the flashes off your cameras?" She asked, "I'm not trying to be bossy, but A) it ruins a lot and B) it's bad for pictures. Let us handle the lighting." In fact, Terminal 5's security guards walked throughout the venue very strictly enforcing the "No Pictures" rule for the night.

She & Him played for a total of 1 1/2 hours, performing songs such as "Sentimental Heart", "You Really Gotta Hold On Me", "Brand New Shoes", "In The Sun", "Don't Look Back", "This Is Not a Test", "Take It Back", and "Home".

After an evening full of beautiful music, audience cheers, and Zooey Deschanel jumping around on stage with a tambourine, She & Him returned for a short encore with the show finally ending around 10:30 p.m.

i dont get it...why is this band so popular?

Posted by Anonymous | July 7, 2010 3:48 PM

3:48 because people think Zooey is pretty and recognize her. Their music is god awful. Whatever scrap of "cred" m. ward once had, is long gone with this project. Along with his song "created for true blood"

The worst.

you first two virgins are judging a book by its cover. Just because she is an actress and beautiful doesn't mean she can't be musically talented.

She's amazing with audience banter, huh?

On the 4th of July show, she complained to the audience about the sun facing the band at Governors Island. Meanwhile, said audience was baking in the hot sun for hours. I'll take Neko Case threatening to fight an entire audience over bitching and whining about nothing.

What. A. Cunt.

HOW DARE SHE TELL PEOPLE NOT TO USE THE FLASH!!!! WHO DOES SHE THINK SHE IS?! DOESN'T SHE KNOW THAT FANS ARE IN CHARGE OF THE BANDS THEY LIKE?!?! FANS SAY WHAT GOES, YOU JUST BE QUIET AND FOLLOW THE RULES, YOUR MAJESTY! IN FACT, MAYBE I'LL JUST THE FILM THE WHOLE THING. OR TEXT FRIENDS ALL NIGHT. I DON'T EVEN LIKE THE DAMN MUSIC I'M JUST THERE TO BE SEEN!!!

M. Ward's no camera policy is hilarious. He must think that every photo taken of him steals part of his soul.

Posted by Anonymous | July 7, 2010 4:02 PM

3:51 is right on the money. The girl has a horrible voice and it's pathetic how M Ward ruined his long term career/credibility for this crap!

Rave On is a Buddy Holly song M. Ward covers. It was a pretty big hit for him and is widely known. You should try lsitening to music recorded before 2005 sometime.

M. Ward should put more of his songs in Budweiser commercials.

Eugene MEHrman

Posted by Anonymous | July 7, 2010 4:14 PM

Eugene Mirman opened up for Cake and Tegan & Sara at Hammerstein once and I wanted to 'MIRder' him. Unfunny fat loser.

What is that mini 4 string telecaster Zooey has sitting in front of her?

Posted by Anonymous | July 7, 2010 4:22 PM

It's an electric uke.

Posted by Anonymous | July 7, 2010 4:27 PM

i like her big blue peepers.

Posted by Anonymous | July 7, 2010 4:29 PM

it's actually a vibrator

This band is making G's! I don't doubt it's her livelihood at this point. Easy 10, 20, 30K payouts.

As much as I dislike her and her band, Deschanel is right about one thing: What is the deal with people who don't know their flashes can be turned off? Is this part of the "disrespect generation" or is just ignorance of how to work their own gadgets? Also, don't they see when they take flash pictures that half of the time they don't come out if the subject is far away? Sheesh.

MEH & M. Ward

Posted by Anonymous | July 7, 2010 4:46 PM

Jesus Christ, again with this crap?

Posted by Anonymous | July 7, 2010 4:49 PM

She & Him = the Dogstar of the Urban Outfitters crowd

Posted by Anonymous | July 7, 2010 4:57 PM

Holy shit 4:57... I was cleaning out some old clothing and found an old Dogstar shirt. What a coincidence

Posted by Anonymous | July 7, 2010 4:59 PM

I was obliged to post a nasty comment but it looks like 37 people have beat me to it. Maybe if we just ignore them they'll go away? Who's buying these tickets anyway??

Unrelated: saw Eugene open for flight of the conchords - hysterical.

Posted by Holden | July 7, 2010 7:12 PM

Saw alot of pretty girls at the show tho.

"M. Ward's no camera policy is hilarious. He must think that every photo taken of him steals part of his soul."

He's about one red-eyed snapshot too late on that.

I thought she made the flash comment very politely. And, she was right...the flashes ruin the vibe (she admitted that was a selfish reason), but also your pictures will turn out much better WITHOUT the flash in a venue like that. She was totally trying to help you out.

4:41: You can't be serious. They are only doing 14 dates which implies it is not their main source of income. Are you aware of how much money people make when they make a movie or when someone that's the size of She & Him (or just M. Ward) license a song to a movie or TV show?

Posted by Anonymous | July 8, 2010 8:26 AM

I just went to masturbate to Zooey...but security was all over me

Posted by Anonymous | July 8, 2010 9:18 AM

That comedian is the worst.

Posted by Anonymous | July 8, 2010 10:04 AM

Why is this the only guy that uses a Gibson Johnny A. Great guitar. Hey! Trust fund kids, pick up a Johnny A when making your next record. Great guitar.

Posted by Anonymous | July 8, 2010 10:37 AM

no camera flashes, whines about facing the sun on the 4th, i've heard stories of her asking people not to smoke at outdoor concerts...WHO DOES SHE THINK SHE IS? SOME TYPE OF HOT, WELL-PAID MOVIE STAR?

mediocrity at it's best.

Posted by Anonymous | July 8, 2010 1:14 PM

She & Him was incredible. Please don't judge if you weren't at the show, (which seems to be pretty much everyone).

Posted by Andres | July 8, 2010 1:22 PM

The only thing I saw security coming after was videoing. I think photos are OK. Where does it say M. ward has a no camera policy?

Posted by Anonymous | July 8, 2010 3:12 PM
