"Billy Corgan says something about being our rock n roll puppet, still has beef w/ Pavement, mimes puppet him killing "guy from Pavement"" - BrooklynVegan

"LOL, one guess at the only thing @BrooklynVegan cared about from tonight's show. It's just too easy for Billy to troll the indie bloggers..." - Hipsters United (a blog about the Smashing Pumpkins)

Smashing Pumpkins

Smashing Pumpkins frontman Billy Corgan had one message for long-time fans last night: I'm sorry.

The indie rocker issued the apology for reasons that remained unclear Monday night during a sold-out performance at Spin magazine's 25th anniversary concert at Terminal 5.

"For the old-school fans, sorry for what I've done to you," lamented the crooner, who headlined the event.

"We love you guys. Thank you so much." [NBC]

Smashing Pumpkins kicked off the week long Zync-sponsored SPIN parties at Terminal 5 last night, Monday, July 26th. And Billy did in fact make that apology, and said the bit about Pavement.

Don't forget that all five SPIN shows, including tonight's Flaming Lips show, are streaming online. For part of the show last night I was watching the stage with one eye, and the live video they were capturing with the other (on a TV screen), and the video was actually more fun to watch. They were doing a great job thanks in part to the serious set up they have going on with cameras flying over people's heads and on stage and in the photo pit.

The venue was decked out with SPIN magazines - on tables and pasted on the walls along with "Zync Zones" and other sponsor stuff.

It's hard to get past the new band, and I wasn't really expecting much from the Billy Corgan show, but they sounded and looked (lights, stage setup, outfits) good. There was lots of wailing by Billy and a bunch of highlights in the set list, which you can see below with more pictures and some videos (grabbed from the stream) from the show...

terminal 5 SUCKS

Saw them in their heyday they were boring. Saw them at an arena show and nearly fell asleep. Billy Corgan needs to just let it go. He is no longer a rock star. He is just a whiny little man who no doubt wishes the chicks would still give him blowjobs without him having to beg for them, much less pay for them.

Posted by Fortyver | July 27, 2010 6:14 PM

Corgan really knows how to stop momentum by playing the new shit nobody wants to hear. Crowd went nuts for the old hits and it was crickets for the boring new stuff. I know he doesn't want to be one of those "greatest hits" bands, but this shit isn't Smashing Pumpkins anymore—It's the aging, narcissistic, former rock star project. He really should change the name.

There's dozens of great songs from their first few albums he could have played in this set, but the only thing the crowd got was a couple of the old radio hits that everybody has heard a million times.

Change your name or play classic SP songs.

As a longtime SP fan, please retire Billy.

Posted by Anonymous | July 27, 2010 6:37 PM

it sounds kind of like a bad smashing pumpkins cover band

Posted by Anonymous | July 27, 2010 6:52 PM

IHA!!!

Posted by Anonymous | July 27, 2010 6:59 PM

Yeah Billy keep slamming Pavement while they play for about 30,000 people in nyc in Sept while you play for 3,000. Classy.

Posted by nonymous | July 27, 2010 7:01 PM

To quote Pavement

"Out on tour with the Smashing Pumpkins
Nature kids, I they don't have no function
I don't understand what they mean
And I could really give a fuck"

This was also the band that got Pavement kicked off of Lollapalooza in 94

Posted by Anonymous | July 27, 2010 7:06 PM

Drummer's got on the Daniel LaRusso headband.

"The indie rocker issued the apology for reasons that remained unclear Monday night during"

Billy Corgan is now an indie rocker??

Posted by Anonymous | July 27, 2010 7:22 PM

I don't know why he can't just tour as Billy Corgan and play a combination of all his stuff...there would be less backlash at least, but I guess the checks wouldn't be as big, and THAT is the bottom line.

Posted by Anonymous | July 27, 2010 7:22 PM

lots of variation on key signatures.

Posted by Anonymous | July 27, 2010 7:27 PM

7:32 anyone who would go to a Billy Corgan solo show needs helps, I'm talking serious help at the University level.

Posted by Anonymous | July 27, 2010 7:31 PM

Those are tunings for guitars. Not key signatures.

7:31, what do you think that show last night was other than Billy Corgan and his backup band?

Posted by Anonymous | July 27, 2010 7:38 PM

"Billy Corgan is now an indie rocker??"

Dude doesn't have a label anymore, releases everything himself...
how much more indie can you get?

Posted by Anonymous | July 27, 2010 7:43 PM

@ 743
BUT HES STILL NO GANG GANG DANCE!!!!!11!one!

Posted by Anonymous | July 27, 2010 7:45 PM

I saw them on the Lollapalooza tour at Randals Island, and the time I was a fan.
The only person that seamed as though they could play there instrument was Billy Corrigan, the rest of the band was like window dressing all style no substance.
Then on top of that he would go into these self involved diatribes between songs killing whatever
momentum which could save his shity excuse for a set.

Posted by Anonymous | July 27, 2010 7:52 PM

7:43 if that is the definition of indie to you then you need help. If the Jo Bros released an album by themselves would they be indie?? No they wouldn't be. I get what your saying, but still.

Posted by Anonymous | July 27, 2010 7:54 PM

Dear Billy,
As an 'old school' SP fan, it's not ok. Please hang it up.

Posted by Mike | July 27, 2010 7:57 PM

Why does it say his reasons for apologizing were unclear? I think his reasons for apologizing are perfectly clear and long overdue.

Posted by Tila T | July 27, 2010 8:07 PM

The year is 2010, "indie" doesn't mean much of anything anymore.

Posted by Anonymous | July 27, 2010 8:19 PM

I saw them in 91 opening for the red hot chili peppers. They were far from boring. This is not smashing pumpkins...

Wow, I can't believe the haters on here. What, did Billy Corgan personally pee in your cornflakes? Why shouldn't he be able to keep his band going? Also, I'd like to see any of you play drums better than Mike Byrne.

Posted by Not Clueless | July 27, 2010 9:13 PM

weak photos

Posted by Anonymous | July 27, 2010 9:18 PM

1)The videos reveal a talented, if lifeless band. The drummer is nowhere nearly nearly as solid as Jimmy.
2) Yes Pavement were refused an opening slot on the 1994 Lollapalooza tour. But the following year, they were invited by Sonic Youth and got a better slot AND more money
3) Shit guitar tone these days too. Jeez Billy!

Thanks again for a great show, Smashing Pumpkins!

Holy Shit! Kill Hannah, are you serious.

I have not picked up a SPIN in years but its good to know that the magazine still has the worst taste in music ever.

If you were stupid enough to think SP wouldn't be horrendous and attended this show, then you got what you deserved.

Posted by Anonymous | July 27, 2010 10:02 PM

@ 8:37, I was wondering when someone was going to address all the Douchebaggery in the audience!

Posted by Anonymous | July 27, 2010 10:08 PM

Ok what exactly did he say about pavement? Good god it's been sixteen years since that song came out, and he's only proving them right.

Posted by Anonymous | July 27, 2010 11:20 PM

is brooklynvegan (or the sponsors pimping their crap) paying photographers? for all the promotional BS in that photo set I would hope so.

LOL @ "dancing in the aisles."

Almost got us, PR man.

Posted by Anonymous | July 28, 2010 12:09 AM

longtime sp fan. whoever reviewed above was right, the band looked and sounded good. the new kid drummer is great, he's a more straightforward basher than Jimmy's pummeling kick and jazzy fills, but i enjoyed the hell out of the show and only later realized it was really heavy on new stuff. the few very few decent cuts of Zeitgeist have been given a positive makeover by this kid because the straightforward arrangements let the songs breath and kill and don't suffer from BC studio knob twiddling.

Posted by Anonymous | July 28, 2010 12:27 AM

to bob the talented music fan (whatever the hell that is?)> go take another hit off the crack pipe dimwit. there ain't no fucking way SP are ever gonna touch Gish or Siamese Dream again and they've been in a nosedive ever since.

Yes Yes right. Those were radio friendly pop alterna hits weren't they.
Didnt this guy hang out with a notorious self absorbed loser, Courtney Love?

Looks like the Upper East side did the wacky activity for the year but forgot the matching Zero shirts.

i think he's balding...

Posted by Anonymous | July 28, 2010 9:11 AM

I think Corgan is somewhat sad these days. A boxer that has been beating to a pulp and keeps getting up. You got to give it to him for trying but there is a time and place to admit this IS NOT THE SMASHING PUMPKINS. Sure, I even like Zwan a little bit but to keep this PR machine going known as the Smashing Pumpkins is just sad to me.

Billy go back to the city by the lake, my man.

Posted by Anonymous | July 28, 2010 1:34 PM

I was a huge SP fan back in the day (first show was lolla 94), but from Machina on, Billy should have hung it up for good. I suffered through the United Palace gig a few years ago and will never go back. It's sad cause Gish, Siamese Dream/pisces were so great.

Posted by Anonymous | July 28, 2010 1:49 PM

1:34- A little late to the party, aren't you?

Posted by Anonymous | July 28, 2010 1:50 PM

looks like Billy dug out a Siamese Dream era ugly-shirt. Doesn't fit so well anymore...

Posted by Anonymous | July 28, 2010 2:15 PM

one look at the pictures and you realize that BC has got the fanbase he now truly deserves! i couldn't stay with this band after 'ava adore' - all downhill from there...

Posted by Anonymous | July 28, 2010 2:58 PM

Gosh what a bunch of snobby fucks, dismissing all of us in the audience as "douchebags." I am sure you're way cooler than me, but frankly you can suck my buttcheeks.
I will never understand the people who act as if "Gish" and "SD" are the only Pumpkins releases worth remembering...I love the following three albums a bit more, but that's a matter of taste. I saw them in '93 at Roseland and '94 at Downing Stadium, and I actually had more fun at this show. I also don't mind that the lineup has changed. I don't get why Corgan is so viciously derided for this, when it's no different than a lot of other historic frontman-led bands like The Cure, Gun Club, T.Rex, The Saints, etc etc. I wonder if Jody Stephens hadn't taken part, would the late Alex Chilton have been treated harshly for calling it "Big Star?" I doubt it. If Adrian Borland hadn't offed himself and reformed The Sound with a new lineup, I bet nobody would mind. It's silly.

Posted by Anonymous | July 28, 2010 6:13 PM

t5 and billy pumpkin both suck.

Posted by Anonymous | July 28, 2010 7:35 PM

its sad because all of these comments and no one is really talking about how the band sounded which should be the most important part of a concert. whats really sad is a guy like Billy who wrote about 99% of the SP library is told he cannot continue a band he made famous because James Iha of all people is not on stage with him

Posted by matt | July 29, 2010 2:26 AM

ok 2:26, they sounded like shit. i was there. its on youtube - c 4 yaself. pre-pubescent drummer was playin the wrong beats. unknown washed out guitarist dude was bland/boring. chick obviously watched darcy in the mirror a lot but it really just wasnt workin for her.

in conclusion - there will be only 1 jimmy, 1 james & 1 darcy EVER! now if only someone will tell The Smashing Billy...

Posted by Anonymous | July 30, 2010 7:28 PM

Dudes,

I know this doesn't pertain to SP but the main support band Kill Hannah's drummer was sick!!!

I'm pretty sure he's a new addition to the band or was just hired for the tour

Check his stuff out at www.paulwandtke.com

Awesome awesome drummer. :)

I found this on youtube as well:

I agree with everyone who says they're not nearly as rocking as old 90's SP, but if you go to a concert try to have fun, and if you're not either start drinking or get the f*ck out. I was only looking for pictures and after reading all the whining on here I have to say, people if you don't like it then go somewhere else you're not welcome here

Posted by Anonymous | August 3, 2010 9:19 PM
