"The last rays of sunlight were creeping up the Sycamore trees as Dan Auerbach and Patrick Carney of the Black Keys loped onto Central Park's Summerstage Tuesday evening. As they kicked off their set I was instantly reminded as to why I hold the Black Keys in high esteem - simply put, they rock.

With Auerbach on his amped up Gibson and Carney sitting high above the crowd, they commanded the crowd's affection as they tore through a string of older songs, including "Thickfreakness", "The Breaks" and, "Busted" (one of the first songs they ever wrote), before inviting a bass and keyboard player onstage for some of their new material off Brothers. Highlights from their new material included "Everlasting Light" and their cut, "Chop & Change", from the new Eclipse soundtrack. (Say what you will about the Twilight series, but the song is damn good)."
[The Docta's Notes]

The Black Keys and The Morning Benders kicked off a tour at Central Park Summerstage in NYC last night (7/27), except they aren't going very far yet. Both bands return to the same venue for the 2nd night in a row tonight (7/28).

And hopefully the Black Keys are resting right now because Summerstage is only their first of two shows this evening. After that, they head over to Terminal 5 to headline night three of the SPIN/Zync shindigs (I heard they go on around midnight after opening sets by The Whigs and Lee Fields).

And while the Black Keys were playing Summerstage Tuesday night, the Flaming Lips were playing Night Two of the SPIN/Zync things at Terminal 5. The Flaming Lips played their own show at Summerstage one night earlier. Night Four of SPIN/Zync is the National who were playing Prospect Park last night.

Posted by Anonymous | July 28, 2010 1:34 PM

Posted by Anonymous | July 28, 2010 1:35 PM

Posted by Anonymous | July 28, 2010 1:37 PM

Can't wait for Philly show on Friday night!!

Posted by Anonymous | July 28, 2010 1:38 PM

and played til about 930.

Posted by Anonymous | July 28, 2010 1:38 PM

Excellent photography on this run...
But the black keys kind of bore me. Sure they are decent, but they are not dangerous.

Posted by Anonymous | July 28, 2010 1:39 PM

friend said last night there was an hour wait for beers. also said keys played for an hour. anyone have exact set times for both bands?

Posted by Anonymous | July 28, 2010 1:42 PM

def. cheap tix outside...my buddy got one for $20. worst beer lines ever--i'd say 45 minutes.

Posted by Anonymous | July 28, 2010 2:06 PM

how far in advance is it typically advisable to arrive to score said extras? is 7:15/7:30 too late?

Posted by Anonymous | July 28, 2010 2:13 PM

the morning benders were fucking awesome & the lead singer is probably the most adorable person i've ever seen.

Posted by Anonymous | July 28, 2010 2:13 PM

were there any black people there?

Posted by Anonymous | July 28, 2010 2:19 PM

@2:13...7:15/7:30 should be fine for buying one outside. btw, beer lines got considerably shorter when the keys went on.

Posted by Anonymous | July 28, 2010 2:24 PM

The fact that the Morning Benders sell a tote bag makes me furious and makes me laugh all at once.

Posted by Anonymous | July 28, 2010 2:31 PM

beer line was REDICULOUS. put a beer limit on so frat boys aren't buying 10 beers for their buddies holding that mess up!

Posted by Anonymous | July 28, 2010 2:47 PM

Thanks, 2:24

I'm not a frat boy, but I bought a shitload of beers because there was no way I was standing in that line twice.

Posted by Anonymous | July 28, 2010 2:59 PM

@2:51 Word. Thanks!

Posted by Anonymous | July 28, 2010 3:06 PM

beer lines were a joke, glad i wasn't drinking.

at 7 no one was selling tix just asking if anyone had extras. if you can't get in just chill on the woodchips right outside the fence. get to BYOB in that case.

Posted by Anonymous | July 28, 2010 3:18 PM

SETLIST?!

Posted by Anonymous | July 28, 2010 3:29 PM

"at 7 no one was selling tix just asking if anyone had extras. if you can't get in just chill on the woodchips right outside the fence. get to BYOB in that case."

Yeah. If you're thing is to SEE the band, pay a scalper cause you can hear the band right outside.

Posted by Anonymous | July 28, 2010 3:30 PM

"Highlights from their new material included "Everlasting Light"

Really?!?!?!

Posted by Anonymous | July 28, 2010 3:55 PM

setlist please!

Posted by Anonymous | July 28, 2010 4:24 PM

prospect park destroys summerstage. mostly due to 3 minute beer lines

Posted by Anonymous | July 28, 2010 4:32 PM

This is their setlist from two nights ago, and although I cannot remember exactly, last night's set was pretty much the same:

Thickfreakness
10 A.M. Automatic
Girl Is on My Mind
The Breaks
Stack Shot Billy
Busted
Everywhere I Go
Strange Times
Same Old Thing
Everlasting Light
Next Girl
Chop and Change
Howlin' for You
Tighten Up
She’s Long Gone
Ten Cent Pistol
Your Touch
No Trust
I Got Mine
ENCORE:
Too Afraid to Love You
Sinister Kid
Till I Get My Way

Posted by Anonymous | July 28, 2010 4:36 PM

Yeah, I guess if I had more than one beer, Everlasting Light would've sounded okay.

Posted by Anonymous | July 28, 2010 4:38 PM

anyone know what year/model Gibson ES Auerbach is playing in these pics?

Posted by Anonymous | July 28, 2010 4:39 PM

My favorite show of the summer.

The beer line was long, but who cares? I don't go to shows in order to put down seven bucks for a beer.

The keys came out at 8 and played till 9:30. The sound was great, which was suprising because summertime usually sounds like shit. Then again, a two piece has to be a pretty easy sound set up.

If you tell me you were there and didnt have a fantstic time, then I'm going to question the validity of one of those statements. Just a fantastic rock show. Dan Auerbach sounds better everytime I see him, and Patrick Carney keeps up with him at every step. The most complete two piece band I've ever seen.

Posted by Anonymous | July 28, 2010 4:40 PM

4:40 - I guess you blazed a little.

Posted by Anonymous | July 28, 2010 4:42 PM

4:42: that is an accurate guess, but it was a very little, and I had similar reactions the first time I saw the keys when I was completely sober. I don't think the substance was responsible for the experience.

Posted by Anonymous | July 28, 2010 4:48 PM

4:38 - craziest thing is Everlasting Light woke up half the crowd. Maybe cause it was the first song they played off Brothers.

Posted by Anonymous | July 28, 2010 4:50 PM

nice job 4:42 on predicting the behavior of 4:40.

Posted by Anonymous | July 28, 2010 5:13 PM

4:42 is very frisky

Posted by Anonymous | July 28, 2010 5:28 PM

@4:39-

It's actually a Harmony H77 with a Bigsby.

Posted by StopCrying | July 28, 2010 5:48 PM

only white people in the crowd. the security was all black dudes.

Posted by Anonymous | July 28, 2010 7:32 PM

we were the only white people in the crowd. seriously it was all black dudes.

Posted by Anonymous | July 28, 2010 10:51 PM

You lying motherfucker.

Posted by Anonymous | July 28, 2010 11:15 PM

so there were scalpers at the place or just people wanting to get rid of there tix? if so how much did they sell it for?

Posted by Anonymous | July 29, 2010 1:05 AM

^^^ oh shoot nvm i thought they were playing thursday whatever i went to see built to spill tonight anyway

Posted by Anonymous | July 29, 2010 1:07 AM

Posted by Anonymous | July 29, 2010 9:20 AM

midnight

Posted by mike | July 29, 2010 3:43 PM

@ Anonymous | July 28, 2010 4:36 PM - thanks for the setlist. Black Keys were awesome on Tuesday (didn't see Wed). Summerstage is a great venue, beer lines sucked but didn't go there for the beer.
