MIA @ MoMA in 2008 (more by Ryan Muir)
MIA

Meanwhile, Mayor Michael Bloomberg, Office of Emergency Management Commissioner Joseph Bruno and Health Department Commissioner Thomas A. Farley gathered at the City Hall Senior Center give New Yorkers weather-related safety tips for the upcoming weekend.

"Heat can be very dangerous. A few years ago in Chicago, 700 people died during a heat wave over a course of a week, so you just got to be careful," said Bloomberg. "None of us think it's going happen to us, but as we all get a little bit older, you just have to take a little more care."

The risk of getting sick during a heat wave is increased for people who:
• Are younger than five, or older than 64.
• Have chronic medical or mental health conditions.
• Take medications, which can disrupt the regulation of body temperature.
• Are confined to their beds or unable to leave their homes.
• Are overweight.

Meanwhile, 200 cooling centers will open on Saturday throughout the five boroughs. To find the cooling center closest to you, call 311 or visit www.nyc.gov/oem. A complete guide to dealing with extreme heat can be found at www.nyc.gov/oem. [NY1]

Hey BV - can you confirm that Cameo show is happening?!?!

Posted by Anonymous | July 24, 2010 12:01 PM

So annoying that Steve Shelley is playing w/ Spectre Folk, MV EE, and Kuupuu @ Shea and Thurston's @ Glasslands w/ Family Battle Snake and Bill Orcutt. Just have one long marathon show, pretty much you're cutting your audience in half for these kind of shows.

venues you don't want to be in tonight: Cake Shop, Glasslands...where else has no A/C? Death by Audio used to not but now they kinda do.

Posted by Anonymous | July 24, 2010 3:53 PM

Silent Barn, Shea Stadium, Cameo + anything outdoors sounds like a hot uncomfortable experience

Posted by Anonymous | July 24, 2010 4:29 PM

Damn, Silent Barn looks killer tonight!

Posted by Anonymous | July 24, 2010 4:39 PM

bands who su-uck> RUSH (good musicians, shit material, rhyhmes with flush), MIA (just complete shit, rhymes with MEH).

Hard NYC is THE single worst concert line up I've ever seen. In fact, the whole day doesn't have a single interesting show anywhere. I guess the best thing to do is stay home, crank the A/C, drinak a few maragritas, smoke some green (my nod to vegetables BV!) and play some GOOD music.

Best thing to do Saturday- come to my house!

Posted by Anonymous | July 24, 2010 4:57 PM

@4:57 agreed. and then to midnight juggernauts.

Posted by Anonymous | July 24, 2010 5:35 PM

Live at The Pyramids
32d s1st St @ KENT
round the corner from glasslands.

Posted by Anonymous | July 24, 2010 5:40 PM

Silent Barn has decent A/C in the basement. Is it true that Glasslands has no A/C? I don't mind DIY venues that are BYOB friendly not having A/C - where would they get the money, and they need to pay the bands, but Glasslands has a license and charges as much as any legit W'burg venue, they could invest in some A/C.

If you survived Wolf Eyes/Black Dice/Growing a few weeks back at Secret Project Robot though, tonight should be no worse.

Posted by Anonymous | July 24, 2010 5:42 PM

Fucking BLENDER AT GRAMCERY - the pricegouging, asshole Livenation venue has NO AC.

Glasslands got a ceiling fan complex that's pretty effective. Definitely a major improvement over before.

Posted by Alan | July 24, 2010 6:29 PM

which artist designed the ceiling fan?

Posted by Anonymous | July 24, 2010 6:39 PM

That ceiling fan at Glasslands was providing no relief last night for Automelodi. Disgustingly hot. Automelodi pretty good though, sound problems aside.

Posted by Anonymous | July 24, 2010 8:03 PM

Beach Fossils curated the ceiling fan.

Posted by Anonymous | July 24, 2010 8:10 PM

MIA just went on, she is wearing a dayglo orange jumpsuit and her camel toe smells of urine and day old mom sweat.

Posted by Music Source | July 24, 2010 8:13 PM

So basically nothing is going on tonight.

Posted by Anonymous | July 24, 2010 8:26 PM

what time does hummous go on?

Posted by Anonymous | July 24, 2010 8:33 PM

I heard the ceiling fan is made from broken drum sticks and recycled bird feathers and spins by way of a human being pedaling a bycicle.

Posted by Anonymous | July 25, 2010 1:12 AM

Just got back.
Sleigh bells are better than whiskers on kittens.
M.i.a. is dead to me.

Posted by golfclap | July 25, 2010 3:17 AM

MIA was fucking atrocious. I can't believe she would let herself sound that bad. Damn near unlistenable between the vocal reverb, delay, and feedback.

Die Antwoord, Sleigh Bells, and Skream and Benga were great though. Getting on/off the island wasn't nearly as bad as I was expecting either.

Posted by Anonymous | July 25, 2010 3:29 AM

hate to say it, but M.I.A. wasn't all that great. although, aren't her live shows supposed to be all weird and artsy, desite sound, technical issues?? everyone else was fantastic though, Die Antwoord really took me by surprise.

i left before the storm started. did it get cut short?

Posted by Anonymous | July 25, 2010 3:34 AM

Die Antwoord absolutely killed

Posted by Anonymous | July 25, 2010 3:50 AM

sleigh bells slayed (ahaha), die antwoord was great, MIA show was high art and y'all are trippin if you think otherwise. noise machine gun medley --> cast of dancing misfits --> insanely long tequila call+response section w/ punching laser beams --> kala requests --> candy rain turns --> acapella. awesome huge mess.

Posted by Anonymous | July 25, 2010 3:54 AM

Although NYC beats LA in almost all respects, I have to admit having a lot of respect for LA for refusing to buy tickets to this shit and getting it canceled. NYC should be ashamed for supporting this garbage.

Posted by Anonymous | July 25, 2010 4:00 AM

i want more dubstep in NYC!! Borgore was nasty, and Skream + Benga were sickkkkk.

Posted by Anonymous | July 25, 2010 4:10 AM

nyc is a joke

baltimore is where it's at this weekend

fuck y'all and your product launch parties

Posted by Anonymous | July 25, 2010 4:39 AM

nyc is a place where a man can find a hindu bride and hide his penis in her hide. nyc makes me spray MIAs face, with a load of cum and a glob of space. I disrespect that loathsome whore and cannot wait til she exits the door.

Posted by Mojo Maniac | July 25, 2010 4:47 AM

I would totally eat MIA's pussy, but I hate her music. OK, not hate...but totally know she is completely bogus. Bunch of programmers over her weird ass inta national lyrics.

Posted by Pervert | July 25, 2010 6:11 AM

MIA was absolutely awful... If I hadn't seen the terminal 5 gig a few years back, it wouldn't have been so sad/bad/disappointing... Sound was terrible, the show a mess, ooooh..,

Posted by Anonymous | July 25, 2010 11:00 AM

There's no better way to describe MIA's set than it was just a complete and utter disaster.

Posted by Anonymous | July 25, 2010 11:22 AM

MIA is a hack and now unbearably obnoxious. 'My dad is a Tamil Tiger' oh wait i cant get a visa now 'Just kidding!' hee hee oppsy. 'This is for the people in the stuggle' while i marry a billionaire and live in Beverly Hills. She is a phony and spoiled. Shes has no talent and no Diplo now thats why her album sucked.. There I said it.

Posted by the truth | July 25, 2010 11:31 AM

man that was some bullshit of a closing set! i swear, it literally felt like she was trying to do a lackluster show on purpose.

the DJ was a complete joke....i mean did they even see Die Antwoord before, tons of energy and spunk???

and that set from 12th planet on the second stage was absolutely dope.

she shoulda looked around at the other acts and needs to realize she's gotta elevate her game.

she is most definitely talented, i think even the haters know that she's capable of much more.

if you keep touring it's time to take a few weeks and retool that show. practice, get the sound worked out, fire the DJ, and try not to make it look like it was all thrown together at the last minute.

sleigh bells so fun!!!!

Posted by amazin | July 25, 2010 11:41 AM

mia was a mess in the best way possible. had a fucking blast. boyz/world town in the down pour was seriously insane. id accuse yall of being blind but im sure you left after one song.

Posted by Anonymous | July 25, 2010 11:42 AM

That was the worst show I think I've ever been to. I didn't even have high expectations. I just went to accompany my gf. Sound was the worst I've ever heard at a concert. I've also never seen so many people leave in the middle of the headliner's set at a festival. The park was basically half empty by the time the show was called due to rain. Haha, what an embarrassment for MIA. My guess is that after her mediocre album, an awful show in NYC and a cancellation in LA that her career is on the downturn... Wish I could get a refund...

Posted by James | July 25, 2010 12:50 PM

This Cap'n Jazz show can piss off. It's way too fucking hot outside. How about they put up a tarp or something over the crowd so we can stay in the shade or something. Goddamn.

Posted by Anonymous | July 25, 2010 12:57 PM

i know- a big fucking lot, not a tree in sight, no water fountains. Plus as soon as theres lightning within 10 miles, they call the show off. Wish we could go back to the pool

Posted by Anonymous | July 25, 2010 1:01 PM

hey haters, RUSH was effin' excellent last night at Jones Beach. Played all of Moving Pictures including "the Camera Eye" for all the die-hard fans, and the sound was unbelievably great for once at Jones Beach. They're the oldest prog rock prophets on the planet, but they still rock and put on a great visual show too. I wish so many long island meatheads weren't there all at once, but fuck them, the show was great. Way better than those that decided to go see lackluster MIA, I'm sure.

Posted by Anonymous | July 25, 2010 2:32 PM

closing McCarrren Pool remains the dumbest decision of modern times.

Posted by Anonymous | July 25, 2010 3:19 PM

the show last night ridiuciolous and awesome and bad, and magic--mia suck so bad, she must must have done in on purpose. she's got some tricks and some ideas, but it think she just got so cagey when die anterwoord blew her out of the water that she pulled this weird ass rockstar theatrics and sabotaged herself and the sound system, along with throwing a big fuck you to the crowd that actually came to see her. I'm mean at some point before she went on, they cut the Dj off and there was this whole sound from the backstage VIP area, and the crowd got listen to it for a few minutes in silence, and it was like "that's were the party is at, suckers". I don't know if she drinks or not, but the bit about having a shot of tequilla in her seemed by far the realest part of the night. The best was the rain over the lazers, but she didn't even know how to make that to work for her, so it seemed like Nature taking pity on her.

The whole fest seemed to programmed by myspace, based on the visitor hit count.

Posted by Anonymous | July 25, 2010 5:31 PM

It's simply ridiculous to put a anonymous opinion in the front page... Technically speaking, the sound was ok til MIA begin her concert, and suddenly it became awful... Was it sabotage? I'm sure that something very weird happened...
