Crystal Castles

"Last night I went with some friends to see Crystal Castles at Terminal 5 for HARD Summer Tour and it was an awesome show. Sinden, Destructo, and JDH & Dave P opened and I have never seen so much sweat in my life. Alice Glass fell on me." [Cactus Crown]

Posted by Anonymous | August 22, 2010 11:09 PM

this does not look like a good time whatsoever

Posted by Anonymous | August 22, 2010 11:12 PM

HOLY SHIT!!!!

SHE ACTUALLY DRANK JACK RIGHT OUT OF THE BOTTLE???

(her schtick is beyond a joke)

Posted by Anonymous | August 22, 2010 11:12 PM

Music for teens! Yay! When's the Music For Suburban Teenagers Tour '10 kick off? Triple Bill: Crystal Castles/Matt and Kim/Titus Andronicus!!!!!!! Coming to your town soon!!!! Teen Central!!!!

Posted by Anonymous | August 22, 2010 11:24 PM

Remember when they were somewhat mysterious? Yeah me neither.

Posted by Anonymous | August 22, 2010 11:31 PM

its seems like there a lot more teens going to concerts these days.

Posted by Anonymous | August 23, 2010 12:10 AM

Oh Man! Lets all make fun of these people for being teenagers! So then we can feel cool about being older! Look at how cool we are!

Posted by Anonymous | August 23, 2010 12:19 AM

dude, ain't making fun of teens, thats kinda lame, we were all teenagers once, but totally cool to make fun of bands that make music FOR teenagers.

Posted by Anonymous | August 23, 2010 12:21 AM

11:24, don't be a douchebag. i bet you're not much older than most of the kids you're describing.

also since when do "suburban teenagers" listen to Titus Andronicus? that band is mostly listened to by the early-20s angsty hipster midwest-emigrant demographic.

Posted by Anonymous | August 23, 2010 12:22 AM

and what is the average age of the aformentioned angry commentors? 20? 21?

looks like it was a pretty fucking good time in my opinon.

Posted by Anonymous | August 23, 2010 12:27 AM

crystal castles is no fucking joke. what does make it a joke is that it was an all ages show. but this concert was tough. 'destructo' on the other hand is so full of himself its not even funny: 'make some more fuckin noise...for ME!. for no reason!

one other thing- anyone who's been to terminal 5 in 2010 knows that pretty much anytime this club is packed = a party. case in point: ed banger bday party, boyz noise/major lazer, xx/hot chip...add this one to the list! if you don't like it, don't go!

Posted by Anonymous | August 23, 2010 12:35 AM

booo instruments!

Posted by Anonymous | August 23, 2010 12:43 AM

i had to work this show..destructo was TERRIBLE!!! and why did he play for so long?? it was the same beat over and over, so many people were complaining and asking when he was getting offstage

and crystal castles were horrible too, a fan even said to me "she cant sing but the beats are good"

Posted by Anonymous | August 23, 2010 12:51 AM

@Anon 12:51 if you had to work this show, god bless you- i can only imagine what kind of weird BS you had to put up with throughout the night!!

Posted by Anonymous | August 23, 2010 1:05 AM

a bullshit waste of money...also the girls with the water bottles are on ecstasy, which is what it would have taken for me to enjoy even a moment of this show.

Posted by Anonymous | August 23, 2010 1:24 AM

is she wearing a Phobia shirt? killer

Posted by Anonymous | August 23, 2010 1:40 AM

wow, crowd surfing, so, like, uh, 1985...give up the moshing, crowd surfing, etc it's soooo fucking tired...

Posted by Anonymous | August 23, 2010 2:20 AM

get enuff shots of the singer for crystal castles? this looks boring as hell and at T5- ugh! Give me a root canal instead please.

Posted by Anonymous | August 23, 2010 2:26 AM

I am 21 and was at this show.

Here's what it is.

Terminal 5 is an all age venue, so especially for this kind of thing when a bunch of kids wanna go to a "rave" to be cool, that's what they are gonna do.

The "teens" were the first people there, and as the night slowly went on, they all started disappearing mysteriously. Especially by the time Crystal Castles came on. I remember one girl next to me saying something like, "chill the fuck out" during Destructo's set. Are you fucking kidding me, I'm gonna jump around and scream if I fucking want that's why I'm here.

And when Crystal Castles came on, Mayhem ensued, little people were crushed, girls started crying, "GET OFF ME, GET OFF ME" etc. etc.

So in conclusion, I had a great time, Terminal 5 should not be an all age venue, and a Crystal Castles show however "shtick" oriented it is, should not be an all age show. I'm getting really tired of little kids being at my shows and being a buzzkill to a good time.

Posted by Anonymous | August 23, 2010 2:26 AM

CC went on at 1 am and the kids were getting demolished and had to leave. By 1:15 am it was a normal 21+ show and it was mayhem. All you trolls who want to feel cool for being old, I hope being old is as great as you make it out to be. It sounds like you're really living it, man.

Posted by Anonymous | August 23, 2010 2:36 AM

posting poo on the bloggy is not gonna change the fact that CC played a sold out show at Terminal 5 while you were trolling bloggies.

Posted by Anonymous | August 23, 2010 2:39 AM

The real winners of that deal were the blog trollers tonight.

Posted by Anonymous | August 23, 2010 2:55 AM

must be so awesome being old and posting comments under pictures of bands you don't like. can't wait to get old.

Posted by Anonymous | August 23, 2010 3:10 AM

Not only have all these bands played tons of free NYC

Posted by Anonymous | August 23, 2010 9:32 AM

i had a great time, though some girl behind me was intent on punching me in the back. must be some new hip dance move.

Posted by Anonymous | August 23, 2010 9:57 AM

don't care what trolls say, i had the most fun i've had in weeks at this show.

Posted by Anonymous | August 23, 2010 10:23 AM

photos are ng

Posted by Anonymous | August 23, 2010 10:48 AM

does ng = no good?

i have to say, this woulda been a really hard show to shoot at... constant strobe lights = shitty images. i'd say they did they best they could.

Posted by Anonymous | August 23, 2010 11:18 AM

so dope. shes such a nutjob.

Posted by Anonymous | August 23, 2010 11:27 AM

the photos are fine, wtf

Posted by Anonymous | August 23, 2010 11:39 AM

This is not a Rave. Anyone who even compares it to that is retarded
For it to be a rave the following 3 criteria must me met...
1. Doesn't end until 9am or until a police raid.
2. Liquid dancing.
3. An overwhelming scent of angel dust in the air.
4. Crowds not staring at the performer because they are too busy dancing or concentrating on staying alive.
5. People laying against walls from massive ketamine doses.
6. All types of ages and nationalities dancing together.
7. Chill security that doesn't care about anything but making sure nobody makes a scene outside to alert authorities.
8. $4.00 waters and zero alcohol sales.
9. Shady drug dealers with crooked baseball hats from queens or Brooklyn that never look you in your eyes when you pass by and say "I got those E's"
10. A few tranny freaks in the crowd with a minimum of 8 inch platform sneakers.

Oh... Almost forgot a final criteria of what makes a rave a rave...

11. People you meet have names such as:
-Astro, quasar, dusted derik, mesh, leviathan, Peter a.d.d., sun frog, k-mark, desire, jay space, and mr acid pants.

Posted by Anonymous | August 23, 2010 12:58 PM

@2:20 "wow, crowd surfing, so, like, uh, 1985...give up the moshing, crowd surfing, etc it's soooo fucking tired..."

Awwww, is somebody getting old. Isn't that cute.

Posted by Anonymous | August 23, 2010 1:12 PM

Here is another rave criteria:

12. Most common cigarette is Newports.

Posted by Anonymous | August 23, 2010 1:17 PM

does anybody know why she punched that person in the face when she was crowd surfing?

Posted by cabalerno | August 23, 2010 1:49 PM

those girls look about 12.

Posted by Anonymous | August 23, 2010 1:55 PM

@1:49... probably because like most male audience members who see a girl crowd-surfing, he tried to grab her somewhere bad.

Posted by Anonymous | August 23, 2010 2:01 PM

Dear Music World,

Can we please return to a pre-Internet modality where musicians still have to pay dues?

In advance, thank you.

Posted by Anonymous | August 23, 2010 3:13 PM

2:01 Then she shouldn't crowdsurf in a mini-skirt.

Posted by Anonymous | August 23, 2010 3:17 PM

to 12:47. I seemed to have met 5 of the criterias. i met a shady drug dealer, saw mad people passing out on the second floor and a few in the pit, i personally danced with girls from different nationalities. It wasnt a rave but I had a good time. and to all those who said that teens ruined the show and that their all suburban douchebags. Im 17 ive like cc since their first album. Im not from the suburbs and i was in the pit the entire time. so to say teens ruined the night is really just a Fail generalization.

Posted by Anonymous | August 23, 2010 3:19 PM

Um, it's really pretty great how the internet destroys the ideal music mentality. Each band does their own shit and nobody should give them a problem about it. Crystal Castles is going to be Crystal Castles at every show they play, if you don't like that shut the fuck up and don't go. Don't knock them just because they're a band that isn't your speed, and just because you can think of 3 reasons why CC qualify as "generic" or wtvr doesn't mean you're unequivocally correct and you're opinion becomes intelligently derived fact. I can think of 5 reasons why CC are balls out awesome, and 5 reasons why they're not...but honestly the negative thoughts don't matter because I realize CC are CC, and I don't expect anything more or less from them. They're not going to go out there and give a Sufjan Stevens-esque accoustic jam, with insanely touching lyrics and heartrendingly sweet accoustic licks...because that's not what they fucking do. This is why you have the option to listen to more than one band. Go fuck yourselves and stop being such douchebags.

Posted by Anonymous | August 23, 2010 3:28 PM

^ that person wins

Posted by Anonymous | August 23, 2010 3:33 PM

cc lyrics are actually really melancholic. it's one of the things that hooked me in. you assume it's gibberish and then you read official lyrics and it's a sad punch in the face.

Posted by Anonymous | August 23, 2010 4:57 PM

@3:13pm CC paid dues for years playing basements and sleeping on floors after shows and getting around America catching the piss stinking Greyhound bus. I saw them in Austin in a basement in 2006 with Indian Jewelry and Anagram and after the show they asked for a ride to the Greyhound station to travel to the next city overnight. I would've given them a lift but I wouldn't have been able to fit their drums in my car!

Posted by Anonymous | August 23, 2010 5:07 PM

I didn't know Austin has basements?

Posted by Anonymous | August 23, 2010 9:23 PM

two incidents: alice hit a girl for kissing her and two dudes who knew each other went for her face and crotch with their hands...so security pulled her back to the stage and slapped one of the dudes in the forehead...fyi: great show and better than april, one of my favorites ever, up there with nin at hammerstein and anytime the flaming lips pass through

Posted by Anonymous | August 23, 2010 10:09 PM

@2:26 i wanted to jump around and scream too but um you're fat and you were MY buzzkill

Posted by Anonymous | August 23, 2010 11:39 PM

I WAS AT THIS SHOW, im 17....
been to hard nyc headlining m.i.a. die antwoord...

THESE SHOULD BE ALL AGE SHOWS, I like to get hit and pushed around... I got there at 11 and got to the front right away!
found some e and by the time cc came on went all out!
fucking amazing show, all age events are amazing
and they should be all ages..
BUT the people that cant handle it should be on the outside or upstairs... trust me people of all ages were freaking out about being pushed around, but thats what a fucking hard show is!

Posted by 17 fuckyeah | August 24, 2010 12:07 AM

crystal castles are one repetitive song played on an ipod while a phony band pretends to perform on stage, with strobe lighting.

also, people get to fondle a 19 year old gal in too much makeup while she mimes what she imagines a punk rock singer looks like, jumping into a pit and mouthing an approximation of lip syncing (minus any syncing with the music whatsover)

Posted by Anonymous | August 24, 2010 7:57 AM

i did monitors for crystal castles 2 weeks ago. there's no ipod or computer involved and no miming. the guy has an 8-track player with the parts and he mutes the synth and performs the synth live. alice is obviously live as her mic feeds back the entire show which is a headache for any monitor person. there are a few songs where they've plugged her mic into a live vocoder, which manipulates her voice depending on what she is singing into it. i'm not into vocoded voices but at least i got a break from dealing with feedback.

Posted by Anonymous | August 24, 2010 3:24 PM

Hahaha Phobia shirt - so ironic

Posted by Anonymous | August 24, 2010 4:22 PM

@12:58 Leave Jay Space outta this...

Posted by Anonymous | August 24, 2010 5:26 PM

2:36, Yeah being older living in NYC is a blast. Work hard all day, go out get all boozed and drugged up, watch great bands every night, and sleep with some random person or people...fun times. Then again I was doing that when I was a teenager so maybe I'm just a sad man. Either way, good times roll.

Posted by bite it you scum | August 25, 2010 12:08 PM

Sinden was utterly lame. "Best DJ in the UK"? Surely they aren't that pathetic across the pond.

And the CC "I'm a punk band look at me throw myself around and drink onstage" shtick has been done better. I don't have a problem with their shtick per se, I am just saying. . . CC, you're not very good at it. Work on it. Less onstage JD and more mind-blowing, please.

Not impressed.

But then, I am not 14 or 17 or 21 and have actually seen bands that do the whole self-immolation thing right. CC, uh, no.

Summary: this show sucked.

Posted by Christian_in_NYC | August 25, 2010 1:35 PM

fuck you all. this show was dope.

Posted by mr acid pants | August 27, 2010 10:55 PM

No way Sinden is the best DJ in the uk for the following reasons:
1. he is mixing on CDJ's.
2. he is using a computer.
3. he has a fowl look on his face like he is all concentrating. And good DJs are dancers first, DJs second.

Posted by Anonymous | August 27, 2010 11:51 PM

so sick of hearing about this craptastic band.

Posted by Anonymous | August 29, 2010 1:55 PM

phobia > crystal castles

at least she has taste. are there any other members of this band?

Posted by Anonymous | September 2, 2010 3:37 PM

Since when did CC make music "for teenagers" have you ever read her lyrics? As far as CC paying their dues.... this duo toured their asses off before anyone really started paying attention. You expect that what bands should just play shit holes for ever until some record exec shows up at a random show and offers them a deal? this is 2010! We all have this thing now call "internet"... dont hate just because your band is shit and gets no recognition.
