DOWNLOAD: Frankie & the Outs - Little Brown Haired Girls (MP3)

Frankie & the Outs @ Tip Top in July (more by Rebecca Smeyne)
Frankie Rose

There have been multiple instances (and multiple bands) where Frankie Rose (currently of Frankie and the Outs) has performed in revealing clothing (see above), but as far as I know this is the first time she's gone publicly topless, and by publicly I mean on countless NYC street corners via the cover of free weekly newspaper NY Press... which is pictured below...

Frankie Rose

Frankie & the Outs play Cake Shop in NYC on 8/27, and Glasslands on 9/15.

You can read the NY Press article HERE & the full issue HERE.

Posted by Anonymous | August 26, 2010 11:05 AM

who cares.everyone has seen an image like this before. Its not shocking, its just a nice picture.

Posted by Anonymous | August 26, 2010 11:08 AM

i'd like to take her out for a nice big bowl of hummus and pita

Posted by Anonymous | August 26, 2010 11:18 AM

OMG! who gives a shit. i doubt its her aim to be shocking, she would have to be dumb to think this is shocking. GOOD JOB BROOKLYN VEGAN TRYING TO MAKE A BIG DEAL OUT OF NOTHING.

Posted by Anonymous | August 26, 2010 11:23 AM

I'll second 11:08, only mean-posters who never saw a pair of tits in real life would be shocked. It's a great picture and in 20 years she'll be able to have something to remember this moment in her life by. What will the rest of you have? Carpal Tunnel and (more) acne.

Posted by Unanymous | August 26, 2010 11:23 AM

Carpal Tunnel and acne? Is that a reference to masturbation and genetics? Sweet.

Posted by ^^^^ | August 26, 2010 11:30 AM

10:43 -actually the photographer and the editor who decided on this picture are both women.

Posted by Anonymous | August 26, 2010 11:31 AM

I suppose the good difference in this one is the lack of pasties or the air-brush. You can actually see stuff...

Posted by Anonymous | August 26, 2010 11:31 AM

This record is amazing. I sure the music will speak for itself.

Posted by Anonymous | August 26, 2010 11:33 AM

Posted by Blag | August 26, 2010 11:45 AM

Posted by Anonymous | August 26, 2010 11:48 AM

if only the "Cellist" would embark on a solo career and seek the services of this photographer and editor for her "Ballad of the Cellist" cover.

Posted by Anonymous | August 26, 2010 11:50 AM

She NEEDS to. The Cellist needs a solo record, new website, publicist, film career, spread in FHM, Twtitter account, Vintage store in Wburg, and probably ironic speak easy.

Ever notice the NY Press is always sex-obsessed (and mostly the gay type) and does no serious political reporting?

I mean: how is this a cover story? It's just a feature on an indie band stretched way too long.

Posted by Anonymous | August 26, 2010 2:48 PM

Quite frankly, I am surprised by the vitriol over what is nothing more than a creative, beautiful, empowering photo.

To clarify, both the art director and photographer ARE women; this was a creative collaboration that was approved by females, including the artist herself. It is not about objectification but about being confident in your own skin...

As one of the commenters mentioned and I couldn't agree more "It's a great picture and in 20 years she'll be able to have something to remember this moment in her life by."

p.s. Ya'll is slippin'. Nobody noticed a Suicide Girl/former Terry Richardson handjob model penned the article? Way to turn self objectification upside down, and still end up with self objectification.

Posted by Anonymous | August 26, 2010 7:58 PM

I'm sure she is a very attractive woman in person, but this photo is just really lame. no expression, no charm, no joie de vivre. is it supposed to be sexy, enticing, stimulating? it's like, ok time for the photo shoot, get the props, set up the standard commercial lighting, apply makeup, stand in front of the camera, pop the flash,
move this way move that way, look into the camera........couldn't somebody think of something more creative than this????

Posted by Anonymous | August 26, 2010 8:07 PM

Posted by Anonymous | August 26, 2010 10:12 PM

Photo is NOT empowering at all. The woman is deliberately hiding her small tits with her hair as if she is afraid or embarrased to show her body.

This is the opposite of Shaun White.

Posted by Anonymous | August 26, 2010 11:00 PM

I think it's a beautiful cover photo, and it seems simply natural and feminine. I think the article was actually better written that a high percentage of blog entries here or elsewhere.

Posted by Anonymous | August 27, 2010 12:03 AM

^ well yes, I meant to emphasize that the unduly sensationalist characterization of an artistic and natural bejeweled nude as "goes topless" and has "performed in revealing clothing" (oh how shocking!) is tantamount to taking a blog slant better suited to the Las egas Showgirl Vegan

The Baltimore Steam Packet Company was an American steamship line from 1840 to 1962, providing overnight steamboat service on the Chesapeake Bay, primarily between Baltimore, Maryland, and Norfolk, Virginia. Called a "packet" for the mail packets carried on government mail contracts, the term in the 19th century came to mean a steamer line operating on a regular, fixed daily schedule between two or more cities. By the time the venerable packet line ceased operation in 1962 after 122 years of existence, it was the last surviving overnight steamship passenger service in the United States. In addition to regularly calling on Baltimore and Norfolk, the Baltimore Steam Packet Company also provided freight, passenger and vehicle transport to Washington, D.C., Old Point Comfort, and Richmond, Virginia, at various times during its history.

Posted by Anonymous | August 27, 2010 2:56 AM

There's no such thing as a "7th grade summer homework assignment," you fucking idiot. See, summer is when middle school kids go on vacation, hence there could be no homework assigned during this period.

Posted by Anonymous | August 27, 2010 4:20 AM

Looks like they got approval for their "7th grade" term comment, as long as it didn't mention the photographer.

Theres a lot of comments not being put up even for ones that are not rude, but just dont care for the ego driven Frankie and the photographer. Have you seen the photographers web site? Talk about pompous and indie elite childishness when its not even rare music.

Posted by Anonymous | August 27, 2010 5:37 PM

It's a pretty pathetic and desperate publicity ploy, and a misguided one at that. NY Press? Nobody reads the NY Press, especially nobody that has any interest in underground music. She took off her top for a shitty free-weekly and got about 300 hits on her myspace yesterday. WOW. Hope it was worth it.

Posted by Anonymous | August 27, 2010 6:40 PM

There's nothing misguided in art photography, though clearly grumpy Puritans know better.

Posted by Anonymous | August 27, 2010 7:17 PM

I think the fact that her band is nowhere to be found in the article, besides a lone quote from her guitarist about the band becoming "a little more democratic", says quite a lot. She joins bands for her own benefit, and leaves them at her convenience. She obviously has ambitions towards stardom, I only doubt she possesses the talent or intelligence to make it happen.

Posted by Anonymous | August 27, 2010 7:21 PM

There's nothing misguided in art photography? I take it you consider this "art photography". What is it that makes this completely standard portrait art? The fact that her nipples are showing? Regardless, there are plenty of decisions a musician makes when it comes to doing/not doing press and what lengths they are willing to go in their attempt to 'make it' that can be considered either savvy or misguided. I can't imagine anyone with half a brain cell that would consider this a good move for what is and will always remain an underground, 'indie' act.

Posted by Anonymous | August 27, 2010 7:39 PM

"I take it you consider this "art photography".

Definitely, why? Because it has a theme. Everyone is so obsessed with anatomy, that they miss all of the overall elements: a crown of roses, the cross, and more clearly visible in the lower photo is the curtain or window with the halo-like circle positioned right around her head. Reminds me of the Pete Townshend 'Empty Glass' cover with the neon halo circle.

I objected to "misguided" meaning "Based or acting on error; misled" because it implies she carelessly meandered into some shameless self-promotion to the detriment of her art. The sexuality is actually incidental, the beauty of a woman transcends mere anatomy. The fact that NY Press is not some fast-track to fame, by virtue of the fact as you say it is not THAT huge of a circulation, means it wasn't some master "ploy" up the Billboard Hot 100.

Posted by Anonymous | August 27, 2010 8:24 PM

Hi. I'm the photographer. Fuck the anonymous crap. Just wanted to take minute and thank all you guys for taking time out of your day to talk shit- really! Frankie was really amazing to work with. Independent spirit, Old soul. The rest of the pictures look great too- very fun assignment. If anyone needs clarification, the source images on my inspiration board that week were "Witchcraft Today" 1970's Paperback Covers. It was de rigueur in that era for woman to be photographed nude. Not trying to make any overt or shocking "statement" or anything. Like much of the art and music lamented on this blog, it's neither the first nor the last of it's kind.

Thanks for the compliments and the criticisms.

That's it.
Jackie Roman
(not giving a fuck since 1984)

Posted by Jackie Roman | August 27, 2010 9:15 PM

Wow, here I was standing up for this as artistic photography and not something more sensational - this was kind of an Annie Hall moment:

"Well, that's funny, because I happen to have Mr. McLuhan right here, so, so, yeah, just let me...
[pulls McLuhan out from behind a nearby poster]
Alvy Singer: come over here for a second... tell him!
Marshall McLuhan: I heard what you were saying! You know nothing of my work!

Absolutely, the other photos with the tarot cards and all came out great too..

Posted by Anonymous | August 27, 2010 9:52 PM

Nice try, but she'll never make the big time (and neither will NY Press).

I hope the photographer got paid.

Posted by Anonymous | August 27, 2010 10:23 PM

because your "source images" were Witchcraft Today circa 1970 that somehow makes this a valid photo? that's like saying my source inspiration was the Mona Lisa or Venus de Milo therefore
my pic/ photo/ work is a high caliber top notch work of art because I say so. again, no disrespect to Frankie, I'm sure she is a lovely and charming person, but this concept and photo just blows!

as far as women of that era being photographed nude, well where is the "nude" ? this isn't nude, it's "topless". not only that, she's looks bored. and constipated. and like she'd rather be anywhere else but there kind of expression.

and worse yet who is the Art Director who put their stamp of approval on this!? heads should roll. oh, wait I almost forgot this is the NYP.

on a constructive note, if this were my thing, I would have shot Frankie as the Birth of Venus (Botticelli). painted backdrop, faux seashell, full frontal, creamy lighting, the works! now that would be really hot!

Posted by Anonymous | August 27, 2010 10:30 PM

you must be a real ACE photographer though. Keep trying, it might happen for you someday. Not.

Posted by Jackie Roman | August 27, 2010 10:40 PM

Posted by Anonymous | August 28, 2010 8:50 AM

Hi, art director here. I don't care whether or not some of you liked the concept or execution of the cover; everyone is entitled to their opinion. I personally stand behind the work and none of what you say will change that. Jackie Roman is immensely talented and amazing to work with. And Frankie, she's a strong, independent woman who's not afraid to be herself and I doubt she cares what you think.

What's really lame is that some of you feel the need to be immature, obnoxious, or worse, sexist in your comments.

Nudity is not a new thing (think Janis Joplin's iconic nude portrait, among countless others). Yet, decades later, some people still freak out over a woman posing shirtless. Big fucking deal. Plus, have you heard?... Sexism is stupid.

The sad thing, I don't think a high-percentage, including 11:47 (your hangover cheerios are getting soggy so stop typing), can get their little mind around when a "concept" or design is in play... unless I'm reading too much into such sophisticated and well-crafted use of the verb forms of sucked and sucks.

With the dress and the turquoise jewelry - she looks fanatastic - on par with a Stevie Nicks - very classy and interesting. The photo you chose makes her look awful, cheap and makes me want o ignore her music.

Posted by Anonymous | August 28, 2010 5:46 PM

8:07, on point. not a huge fan on frankie but either way would have appreciated some thought and consideration that goes beyond a topless, hippie style photo for a cover photo. its almost 2012 and this feels like idolatry of something already done

exactly. In fact, there is solid scientific evidence to support the theory that most babies are born nude.

Posted by Anonymous | August 28, 2010 10:04 PM

^Very clever! Are you a P.H.D.? Columbia?

Posted by Anonymous | August 28, 2010 10:38 PM

Nudity on the cover of NYP = Desperate attempt to increase circulation of a failing publication.

Nudity of Frankie Rose = Desperate attempt to increase public interest in a not so popular musician.

Putting an unpopular musician topless on the cover of an unpopular publication isn't going to help either very much.

Posted by Anonymous | August 28, 2010 11:08 PM

I agree, let her do her thing. that's fine. the only problem is why one would want to associate oneself with such a lightweight shitty rag like NYP, average talent art director/ photog and think it's a good artistic statement + career move. if she got 15 minutes of publicity, great.

immature comments aside, commenting on the photo is fair game.
it's called criticism. if you can't take the heat..............

If those posters are really the photographer and art director, don't they know NEVER to participate in a flaming comments-section thread, especially to defend themselves? Amateurs.

Why is it that people associated with the Vivian Girls always want to chime in helplessly to the BV comments section?

Why is the sky blue and the grass green?
