Gil-Scott Heron

"Gil didn't perform The Revolution Will Not Be Televised [on Thursday] night, but he did enthrall an appreciative crowd of several thousand people with a 90 minute selection of songs from his new album, I'm New Here, and a number of classic songs from his recording career including Pieces of A Man and The Bottle.

It was a great performance from a man who, quite frankly, has not aged well. As little as three years ago, Scott-Heron was doing time in New York's infamous Riker's Island prison for cocaine possession. He looks ten years older than his 61 years. And yet. And yet, Gil Scott-Heron still has it. If his voice was any lower - it would be gravel. He still knows how to command a stage, and the audience was not there to see the last gasp of a great poet, songwriter, and author, but to see a man reborn." [The Compleat Traveller]

Gil Scott-Heron played his 2nd free Summerstage show of the summer on Thursday night, this time in Marcus Garvey Park (the first was in Central Park). His next NYC show will cost you money. More pictures from Marcus Garvey Park, below...

Is it true that GSH really only does these gigs to cash in to buy drugs? I am not being snarky and/or racist or whatever you trolls will assume. Someone told me they read this in the NY Times or The New Yorker and I was all "Whaaaaaa? Get the F outta here."

whitey gets busted and it's coke. a brother gets busted and it's crack.

GSH doesn't do these gigs to get cash for drugs... That is only a nasty rumor. He plays these shows to raise money for chickpeas and tahini. That shit is getting expensive.

does anyone else think it is weird to wear a t-shirt of yourself and your own show?

Posted by Anonymous | August 9, 2010 12:40 AM

Read the New Yorker profile, it's very honest. GSH is still a functioning crack head.

someone once told me that lou reed, david bowie, iggy pop, john lennon... all those guys... they used to like, make all this money from being talented, and then spend their money on drugs.

can someone confirm this please?

You mean he is full of crap and did not play Israel not because of his antisemitism but because Israel would not give the crackhead felon a visa?

You mean he is full of crap and did not play Israel not because of his antisemitism but because Israel would not give the crackhead felon a visa? He looks like shit because he is also HIV positive...complained he wasn't getting his meds in jail.

Shalom!

Posted by Anonymous | August 9, 2010 9:21 AM

everyone seems to be making judgments about his drug problems and personal life, but nobody seems interested in the fact that his newest record is really quite good.

"someone once told me that lou reed, david bowie, iggy pop, john lennon... all those guys... they used to like, make all this money from being talented, and then spend their money on drugs."

You and people like you are missing the point of that first comment. He is asking if GSH plays SOLELY to support his drug habit. The point wasn't asking "Does GSH do drugs?"

Yes, 99% of people in music do drugs. Any fucking idiot knows that (like you; any fucking idiot). But to come out of your hovel to play a gig to solely support a drug habit was commentor #1's question.

You fucking illiterate shitstain

Posted by Anonymous | August 9, 2010 10:05 AM

jesus dude, go walk off that roid rage you just went into..

Posted by Anonymous | August 9, 2010 10:20 AM

if you think lou reed didn't/doesn't play shows soley to support his drug habit, then you are a)retarded and b)retarded.

evrybody even people with amazing gifts have issues and demons that continue to ride the backs of otherwise spiritual and good hearted people...the thing to do is to honestly pray for these people, our people our gifted people, they need prayer and encouragement, obviously they never learned how to manage w/o drugs!.....

People who live in glass houses shouldn't throw stone. He is still a gifted-talented artist, musician, author, & songwriter. And is still relevant to the work he is doing.
