Ink & Dagger

The newly re-vamped (get it?) Ink & Dagger returned to NYC with a new vocalist Geoff Rickly in tow for a show at Party Expo alongside Primitive Weapons. The show acted as a primer for an upcoming set at This is Hardcore, a newly announced set TONIGHT (8/13) at The Ox in Philadelphia, and two shows in LA which are NOT at Eagle Rock Performance Center as previously posted. The West Coast dates are affiliated with fyffest and taking place at 6th St Warehouse (update: tickets for one of them. maybe there's only one? are on sale). All dates and more info below.

Those of you NOT heading to Philadelphia tonight, a reminder: Pollution teams up with The Love Below, Megasus, and Judas for a show at Acheron. Show kicks off at 8PM. Get there!

Some pics and video from the Party Exp show, as well as those updated dates, below...

Fuck hummus!

Posted by Salsa | August 13, 2010 12:59 PM

These dudes are like 35. :(

Posted by Anonymous | August 13, 2010 1:06 PM

As a disclaimer, I'm a fan of Thursday and was a HUGE Ink & Dagger fan in the late 90's.

I (sort of) supported this reunion at first, even though I had no desire to see them. They made it known it was a one time show and that they were doing it with to raising money for a friend's medical bills.

Bleh, I hope they end it after these handful of shows.

Posted by Anonymous | August 13, 2010 1:08 PM

Anyone know the address of the OX and what time the show starts???

Is this the correct address???
1652 N. 2nd St. Philadelphia, PA 19122

Posted by Address? | August 13, 2010 1:11 PM

They sucked in the '90s and are too old to be running around like a bunch or hormone drunk kids. I'm mean really. Puke.

Posted by Anonymous | August 13, 2010 1:12 PM

The address of the Ox is not supposed to be posted online!

Posted by Anonymous | August 13, 2010 1:13 PM

thursday owns

Posted by Anonymous | August 13, 2010 1:15 PM

1:12 OTM. Aren't you supposed to have a wife/kids/house/career etc by this point? These guys actually call each other and organize practices for their vampire band. Thats some sad shit.

Posted by blackhat | August 13, 2010 1:16 PM

Hahaha!! So sad indeed! I HATE hummus jokes, but not as much as the audacity of an I&D reunion.

Seriously though....to the band and fans, GROW UP! You don't have to act more mature or even give a f--k about anything...just stop listening to this 90's teenage nonsense!

Posted by Anonymous | August 13, 2010 1:21 PM

Right because a 40 year old James Murphy making dance songs and doing DJ sets is real mature. STFU

Posted by Anonymous | August 13, 2010 1:25 PM

My grandparents moved to America because they believed the streets were paved with hummus. Due to chasing a dream from the old country, today I am a US citizen. True story.

Posted by Anonymous | August 13, 2010 1:28 PM

90's hate! Hahaha! waaaa waaa...

Posted by Anonymous | August 13, 2010 1:29 PM

but James Murphy makes $. These dudes are doing hardcore shows, and like gyrating. :(

Posted by Anonymous | August 13, 2010 1:29 PM

I'm glad 1:29 said it: if you're not making that mooooney, you probably should not make punk or noise or music or art. It just doesn't have a clear sheen of success that shows people that you're brilliant. Like James Murphy and Lady gaga... Both are different artists but both make mad loot, vis-a-vis, they are FUCKING GENIUS. What's not to understand?

Posted by Anonymous | August 13, 2010 1:40 PM

1:40 quit being lame. No ones talking about art v. commerce or whatever. They're goofing on a bunch of near middle age guys reuniting their vampire band and entertaining children like the past 15 years never happened. I'm with the people who think it's sad.

Posted by Anonymous | August 13, 2010 1:42 PM

1:40 = tool box

Posted by Anonymous | August 13, 2010 1:43 PM

"Right because a 40 year old James Murphy making dance songs and doing DJ sets is real mature."

Yeah, but he's not acting like a f--king vampire!!!!

Posted by Anonymous | August 13, 2010 1:43 PM

They were a loved band and they decided to play a couple shows, why does everyone have to hate them for it? Let them have fun, why does everyone have to be so jaded. Do you really get pleasure "goofing" on them?

Posted by Anonymous | August 13, 2010 1:45 PM

I'm not 'goofing', I seriously dislike this band.

Posted by Anonymous | August 13, 2010 1:49 PM

1:45 those guys were the biggest assholes in the mid 90s punk scene. THE biggest. I remember seeing them in a basement in like '96 and boy were those guys unbearable people. Just sheer retards. So people goofing on them now seems like apt karma.

Posted by Anonymous | August 13, 2010 1:50 PM

Do you think they had a discussion where they debated if they were too old to still wear the make up? lulz.

Posted by blackhat | August 13, 2010 1:50 PM

For real though...GROW THE F UP!!! Just because you thought something was cool when you were a teenager doesn't mean that you have to wax nostalgic for it now.

I used to LOVE hardcore....until I wans't an angsty teenager anymore!

Posted by Anonymous | August 13, 2010 1:53 PM

Blood Orange Hummus

Yield: 1 3/4 cups (serving size: 1 tablespoon)
Ingredients

* 1/4 cup parsley leaves
* 2 tablespoons chopped onion
* 1 garlic clove
* 1/4 cup blood orange juice
* 2 tablespoons tahini (sesame seed paste)
* 2 tablespoons rice vinegar
* 2 teaspoons low-sodium soy sauce
* 1 teaspoon Dijon mustard
* 1/4 teaspoon salt
* 1/4 teaspoon ground ginger
* 1/4 teaspoon ground coriander
* 1/4 teaspoon ground turmeric
* 1/4 teaspoon ground cumin
* 1/4 teaspoon paprika
* 1 (15-ounce) can chickpeas (garbanzo beans), drained

Preparation

Drop parsley, onion, and garlic through food chute with food processor on, and process until minced. Add blood orange juice and remaining ingredients, and process until smooth. Serve with pita triangles.

Posted by Anonymous | August 13, 2010 1:53 PM

Cumin AND Coriander? Now you're just being an asshole.

Posted by Anonymous | August 13, 2010 1:58 PM

1:53

may I ask which bands you listened to when you were a "angsty teenager"?

Posted by Anonymous | August 13, 2010 2:00 PM

ps- Dear band member wearing SWANS shirt, M. Gira probably hates your music.

Posted by Anonymous | August 13, 2010 2:00 PM

@2:00 - Gorilla Biscuits, Snapcase, Bad Brains, Fugazi, Orange 9mm, SOIA, etc....good enough for ya??

Posted by Anonymous | August 13, 2010 2:06 PM

@2:06 so, snooze-fest with a couple exceptions

Posted by Anonymous | August 13, 2010 2:10 PM

Is hummus a cool thing to say here? Cuz meh is totally over.

Posted by Anonymous | August 13, 2010 2:13 PM

To "blackhat" and all the other haters...I guess that Danzig, GWAR and a large portion of black and death metal bands playing today would have to quit playing because they don't pass your "what you should be doing at a certain age" test. You're dumb.

Posted by Anonymous | August 13, 2010 2:32 PM

Gwar, Kiss et al. surely must feel ridiculous, but I'm sure they can contextualize it as their job that they've been doing forever. Why some 35 year old man would wake up one day and decided to get the old vampire band back together I don't know. I hope I'm never that defeated by life.

DERRRR HERE I GO TAKIN THE TRAIN TO PHILLY

Posted by Anonymous | August 13, 2010 2:57 PM

Anyone see this joker standing outside of Party Expo? I had to take video of him.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6Xmz-p9FYW8

Posted by Anonymous | August 13, 2010 2:59 PM

isn't the bigger point that this was basically a 2-man band, and one of them is dead? not really a reunion. No disrespect to Geoff, I like Thursday, but how can you have a reunion with 1 member?! THAT's lame, not the make up!

Posted by Anonymous | August 13, 2010 3:02 PM

3:02 no the make up is pretty lame too

Posted by Anonymous | August 13, 2010 3:03 PM

Ash was the best part of Ink and Dagger and shes not with them anymore so... hummus.

Posted by Anonymous | August 13, 2010 3:05 PM

@"blackhat" - Yeah...they all look pretty "defeated" in those photos and the video posted above. Not. They look like they're having a great time. Oh...and what the f*ck have you done?

Posted by Anonymous | August 13, 2010 3:15 PM

BOTTOM LINE....In a year when SWANS are getting back together, why the f--k would you possibly care about this nonsense???!?!?!!!

Posted by Anonymous | August 13, 2010 3:19 PM

God I really feel sad for all the sad, angry old farts posting here hating on I&D for playing music "at their age". Please go die in your shitty cubicle. Jealous much?

Not everybody wants to be a pathetic 35 year old listening to Animal Collective with a crappy job and a fat girlfriend

Anyone that thinks hardcore can only enjoyed by "angsty teenagers" never really listened to hardcore (probably just pretended to be into it to get laid) and the scene is happy you left.

Posted by Anonymous | August 13, 2010 3:20 PM

How many Brooklyn bros with SWANS shirts actually listen to them. It's like a shitty scene statement in greenpoint. That's all.

And it's too bad because they' have some great stuff.

Posted by Anonymous | August 13, 2010 3:23 PM

Hey man, it's a free country. They can play all they want. Just don't expect the rest of us to see a bunch of 37 year old guys reuniting (and I use the word loosely because most of the original band members aren't there) and playing adolescent vampire themed music to kids half their age and not notice how ridiculous it is.

Posted by blackhat | August 13, 2010 3:29 PM

Geoff Rickly couldn't have done it better though...

Posted by Anonymous | August 13, 2010 3:32 PM

blackhat writes, "Aren't you supposed to have a wife/kids/house/career etc by this point?"

Wow, way to buy in to the myth that life can only work one way, on one track, like a big socially approved cliche.

You, and the dude complaining that "they're like, 35," are the real jokes.

Way to live up to stereotypes that young people are too stupid to know how to live.

Posted by Anonymous | August 13, 2010 3:35 PM

I think I&D are SLIGHTLY younger than everyone on here is saying. They LOOK old because of their shitty lifestyles but I think they're all early to mid thirties, right? And the "fans" looked late 20s early 30's to me. Seems all around like it was nostalgia for a good cause. Certainly not reinventing the wheel, but it looks like they were all having harmless fun.

Posted by Anonymous | August 13, 2010 3:37 PM

dude if some 42 year old guy wakes up and wants to put make up on and play some ham-fisted emocore music, more power to him. Like I said it's a free country. We as citizens have the right to form middle aged vampire clubs. Just don't expect me to think it's cool.

Posted by blackhat | August 13, 2010 3:39 PM

That Ink & Dagger show looks way more fun than 90% of the shows on BV that are full of little kids in shorts and girls in face paint.

Posted by Anonymous | August 13, 2010 3:43 PM

3:37 the wikipedia page said their old singer died in 2000 at the age of 27. So 37 might actually be about right.

Posted by Anonymous | August 13, 2010 3:44 PM

just for the record...

would you actually be somebody that cared about this band in the first place (rather than being a messageboard/commenter troll), you'd know that I&D had already dropped the vampire shtick by the time their 'career' hit its tail end. no more make up, no more gimmicks. basically the same way that they presented their songs last night, with the exception of Sean not singing them.

if you wanna hate for hatin's sake, you might wanna shift your focus towards that fact.

Posted by Anonymous | August 13, 2010 3:50 PM

old or not. who cares? But couldn't they just do new projects instead of rehashing a career that was never interesting in the first place?

Posted by Anonymous | August 13, 2010 3:52 PM

3:50 so they abandoned pretending they were vampires in their late 20s? lulz.

Posted by blackhat | August 13, 2010 3:54 PM

3:52, Yeah, because no one should ever be allowed to revisit old pleasures.

Maybe when you grow up you should just "do new projects." In fact, why wait, why not start right now.

Posted by Anonymous | August 13, 2010 3:55 PM

40 yr old punk rockers are far cooler than 40 yr old office stiffs. just sayin..

Posted by Anonymous | August 13, 2010 3:57 PM

"40 yr old punk rockers are far cooler than 40 yr old office stiffs. just sayin.."

Maybe cooler, but def more pathetic. At least the place I work has AC...and paychecks.

Posted by Anonymous | August 13, 2010 4:00 PM

3:57 noooo way. Nothing cool about being 40 years old and gyrating in front of social misfits as some bizarre for of cabaret.

At least someone like Malkmus openly admits he is just doing it for the money. These guys don't even have that option. Now that's what I'd call a loser.

Posted by blackhat | August 13, 2010 4:00 PM

@3:55 - revisit old pleasures??! You truly sound like a major t-o-o-l!

Posted by Anonymous | August 13, 2010 4:02 PM

They are indeed all in their early 30s. Sean was the oldest in the band. He would have been 37.

You fucks need to relax. One person mentioned that these shows were originally organized to help a close friend of the band. Their friend's son has cancer at less than two years old.

Anyone that knocks some friends getting money together the best way they know how, to help save a child's life is a heartless mother fucker.

Posted by Anonymous | August 13, 2010 4:03 PM

4:03 aren't these guys friends with/part of the Buddyhead crew? Those guys lived to make fun of people. And they picked easy targets. Now some cool, smart, Brooklynites are calling them out for well... sucking badly. Seems like just deserts to me.

Posted by Anonymous | August 13, 2010 4:06 PM

4:02--Yeah, god forbid anyone ever speak with sincere words! You sound like someone who HAS no pleasure, past, present, or future. Enjoy your sardonic superiority.

Posted by Anonymous | August 13, 2010 4:07 PM

blackhat
your refusal to contextualise I&D's performance shtick surely brightens up an otherwise bland friday.

Sidenote for ya: I'd have advised Don Devore against resurrecting his old band. Simply for the fact that Sean McCabe wasn't your average punk rock or hc vocalist. And the last time I checked he was still dead. Did that keep me from going to the show. No it did not. Turned out to be quite an energetic good time actually, despite it not having the feel of an I&D show at all.

Posted by Anonymous | August 13, 2010 4:11 PM

This thread. Wow. Butts. Hurt ones

Posted by Anonymous | August 13, 2010 4:11 PM

Again. I am simply stating that the original show that was booked (This is Hardcore) is a benefit show that was specifically done to benefit a kid with cancer.

I am not bringing in the CREW they rolled with, or their friends from 15 years ago. Or even if you like their music or not. The intentions are for a good cause, and not so they could relive some glory day, or revive something that died in 2000. I guarantee you even I take issue with that aspect of it.

Posted by Anonymous | August 13, 2010 4:16 PM

Crud Is a Cult

Posted by Anonymous | August 13, 2010 4:18 PM

"your refusal to contextualize I&D's performance shtick surely brightens up an otherwise bland friday.

Contextualize it. Into what? Some greater political statement? Should I recontextualize this reunion into the grander sociological ramifications of Twilights popularity while I'm at it?

I met the guys in this band a few times back in the day. They weren't exactly Ian Svenonius if you know what I'm saying.

Posted by blackhat | August 13, 2010 4:21 PM

Reading this post is a true "Newspaper Tragedy". No disrespect to Geoff but Don and whoever dreamed this up should be ashamed of themselves for calling this a "reuniting". For those that got to see the real thing in the 90's know that the magic died with Sean.

Ain't no such thing as being "too old to rock and/or roll."

Posted by Anonymous | August 13, 2010 6:14 PM

No it seems like a lot of the too old for playing hardcore at 35 or whatever comments are actually coming from maybe some idiot well to do trust funder kids who dress poor that are in their 20's. Everyone knows theres a lot of those losers in NYC.

It just has that entitled know it all style they way its thrown down.

At least it looks like Don has finally kicked heroin and gotten his life back together.

Posted by Anonymous | August 14, 2010 10:39 AM

why is this show such a sausage party? where are all the girls? i'm a girl, i loved ink & dagger... but i couldn't come. wonder if there were any girls at this thing.

Posted by sausage | August 14, 2010 11:14 AM

All of the above hater comments were said about The Jesus Lizard, Pavement, Polvo, Slint, etc... reunions.

With any great band, there will be Haters and Fans. If a band sucks, there wouldn't be any comments.

I was lucky enough to get into the I & D show and it ruled all other reunion shows! never thought it would happen! Please play NY again!

Posted by Anonymous | August 14, 2010 1:27 PM

There were girls, but they were all in the back, away from the pit. Anna Paquin was seated on the side with her douchey TV boyfriend. He wouldn't let anyone talk to her. douche.

Posted by Mizzy | August 14, 2010 1:32 PM

It was super cool that Ink and dagger threw down an old fashioned hardcore show at party expo, but they should play another show at a proper venue. It was too crazy, unless you were in the pit. They sounded awesome. I hope they release the full show on youtube.

Posted by Anonymous | August 14, 2010 1:36 PM

I saw Anna Paquin in the back too. She must be fangbangin one of the dudes in the band.

Posted by Anonymous | August 14, 2010 1:38 PM

who was the black dude acting like a bouncer, bbut jumped into the pit!?!? Are bouncers allowed to do that? He gave me shit for smoking in the club. I don't even think he worked there! haha

AWESOME SHOW. VERY F-ING AWESOME.

Posted by James C | August 14, 2010 1:46 PM

I wish more bands these days would have an artistic vision like Ink & Dagger had in the 90s. There's way too many hack punk bands trying to be the new Pavement, or the Arcade Fire. This scene needs some inspiration...

+ I know the show was supposed to be a secret show, but it would be cool if they gave the fans some notice prior to the day of the show. Why is it cool to play a secret show? I have friends that didn't get in. They haven't played in 13 years! Give a brother a chance

Posted by Anonymous | August 14, 2010 2:04 PM

the show was announced at least a week in advance

Posted by Anonymous | August 14, 2010 3:36 PM

Fucking vegan faggots. just pissed that they egged fucking krishnas? and wasted yogurt?
get over it, the money raised is going towards a two year old's fucking CANCER BILLS. Get over it. They are legends in the philly scene. A scene that I am glad to call my home.
Internet trash talking pussies wouldn't have the balls to leave your trust-fund homes in the "hood" with all your yuppie cunt "friends" that wouldn't have your back if you ended face down. Get a real job, pay your own rent and stop running back to your rich fuck parents when you need a new chain for your "fixie."
Hardcore isn't just for "angsty teens," it's a fucking lifestyle that has followed me trough a lot of shit. And, I'm still here. And I will still fight for what I have earned. And in 5, 10, 15 years, I'll still have what I earned. And I may not have too much, but at least I'll have my own self fucking respect.

Posted by XphillyX | August 17, 2010 2:47 AM

@xphillyx it's nice to see some fucking passion on here. Not super stoked on the "faggot"-bombs being dropped but still, overall I'd give this comment a 7.2 just because you went for it. Miles above the usual lame "hummmmmmus" comments. The dagger was the best hc band around in their day. Philly's answer to DC. Long live SPM.

Posted by Anonymous | August 17, 2010 10:23 AM

If you were at TiH, the "faggots" thing would make sense. Paul Bearer is still catching shit for it. I'm not tearing on gays at all. I just wish people would get off their horses and realize what this was for. They were not re-living the "good old days." It was completely for a real worth while cause. Geoff was great in place of Sean. He knew what this meant. And he respected it. Why the fuck can't the "kids" get it?

I went primarily for Kid Dynamite, but seeing Grey Area "open" for them was amazing. Watching Ink and Dagger gave me time to 1) cool down and 2) realize that they were a huge impact on this city. It was a really good time. And if you weren't there, I guess I can't expect you to understand why this was such a huge night for Philly.

But if dropping "faggots" got you to read it, then i succeeded at what I wanted, and hopefully you'll reevaluate your opinion on why they are doing this. Because most of them have moved on from I&D, and they revisited this to help a friend. Get over your self-righteousness.

Posted by XphillyX | August 17, 2010 11:54 AM

I didn't realize that 35 was old? I don't give 2 shits about this band but yikes, who cares if they are in there 30's or in their 40's? I miss when music was fun. You kids suck.
