"Lollapalooza wheeled out some big headliners in its sixth year on the Chicago lakefront, as a record 240,000 people poured into Grant Park over three days to see 130 performers, including Lady Gaga, Green Day and reunited grunge-era icons Soundgarden.

Size matters at Lollapalooza, as the festival expanded its reach westward by shutting down Columbus Avenue and spreading eight stages across 110 acres, up from 80 acres in previous years. Columbus Avenue was converted into a giant sidewalk lined with portable toilets, a simple but effective improvement that allowed fans to avoid the dreaded Buckingham Fountain bottleneck that had turned previous festivals into human traffic jams. The festival topped its previous three-day record of 225,000, reached the last two years.

Still, there was little room during some performances at the northernmost stages on Butler Field, where fans jostled shoulder-to-shoulder for space to see performances by Metric, Phoenix and Arcade Fire. Note to Austin, Texas-based promoters C3 Presents: How about widening the southern entrance to Butler Field or moving one of the stages onto Columbus Drive to relieve what is becoming an annual problem? It's only going to get worse if the festival approaches its new capacity of 95,000 a day in future years." [Chicago Tribune]

The 2010 edition of Lollapalooza went down in Chicago on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. A set of pictures from the first two of those days, continue below...

1) 2nd picture of Dirty Projectors....she's adorable.

2) Lady gaga fans = speechless....maybe worse than hipsters

3) Radiohead/Rage/Wilco/Kanye/NIN 2008 was the best year

4) last picture...I bet she's from Jersey shore

Posted by Anonymous | August 10, 2010 11:00 AM

2007 was the best year.

Does Thomas Mars own a different shirt? I mean...

"3) Radiohead/Rage/Wilco/Kanye/NIN 2008 was the best year"

Agreed

Posted by Anonymous | August 10, 2010 11:09 AM

Best festival around, hands down.

Posted by Anonymous | August 10, 2010 11:11 AM

It was pretty funny to see 20,000 people realize at the same time how truly fucking boring the XX are.

Posted by Anonymous | August 10, 2010 11:12 AM

more pictures of people eating!

Posted by Anonymous | August 10, 2010 11:15 AM

i went in 2007... highlights included:

a) a strung out amy winehouse barely getting through her set (she had a heroin overdose two days later)

b) the roots playing nonstop for an hour...amazing

c) my girlfriend and i almost suffocating during the stage rush of the stooges (not fun at the time, but great in retrospect)

d) juliett lewis acting like a complete retard (set was AWFUL)

e) tv on the radio tearing it up

Anybody know how Wild Beasts are live? I'm contemplating seeing them.

To answer your questions; Yes I am a loser. Yes I know I have poor tastes? No I am not dome douche bag who likes everything from the UK.

Thanks in advance.

Posted by Anonymous | August 10, 2010 11:20 AM

Yeah The xx had a tough go of it but finally got the crowd into it about 3/4 into their set. Conversely, Chromeo and Cut Copy had audience going absolutely bonkers.

Posted by Anonymous | August 10, 2010 11:24 AM

2007: Daft Punk, Tokyo Police Club, Clap Your Hands Say Yeah, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Muse, Pearl Jam, (pre annoying) Kings of Leon, The Black Keys, Roots, Interpol, Modest Mouse, Elvis Perkins, Regina Spektor, Yo La Tengo, Ted Leo, Blonde Redhead, LCD Soundsystem, Hold Steady, Spoon, Heartless Bastards, !!!, TV on the Radio, Los Campesinos, Vive Voce, Silversun Pickups, Cold War Kids, and a young(er) Lady Gaga

Posted by Anonymous | August 10, 2010 11:25 AM

and you thought pool party crowds were ugly

Posted by Anonymous | August 10, 2010 11:26 AM

By 3/4 into the XX's set, most of the crowd was gone. Maybe they should reverse their set order.

Posted by Anonymous | August 10, 2010 11:27 AM

"3) Radiohead/Rage/Wilco/Kanye/NIN 2008 was the best year"

believe that would go to:

Sonic Youth/Hole/Cypress Hill/Pavement/Elastica/Beck/The Jesus Lizard

but then again i'm sure most of you are too young to remember.

Posted by Anonymous | August 10, 2010 11:31 AM

HOLY CRAZY AMAZING LINE UP

Posted by Anonymous | August 10, 2010 11:34 AM

Clearly, the xx is not suited for an open air venue in the summer heat. People seemed to enjoy them just fine at summerstage.

Posted by Anonymous | August 10, 2010 11:34 AM

92 was the best. I would agree 07 is the best of the Chicagopalooza'a.

Posted by Anonymous | August 10, 2010 11:36 AM

that's a lucky dude, he went to lollapalooza and got to finger fuck lady gaga...

Posted by Anonymous | August 10, 2010 11:38 AM

240,000?!?! And how many of those people were there just there for Gaga? Sounds like an even worse crowd than Bro-chella had this year.

Posted by Anonymous | August 10, 2010 11:59 AM

How fucking chill and genuine do the girls in Warpaint seem after the pics of Lady Gaga and that fucking douchebag from The Strokes in his bedazzled leather jacket?

Posted by Anonymous | August 10, 2010 12:07 PM

they are just not a very interesting live band. summerstage proved that to me.

Posted by Anonymous | August 10, 2010 12:08 PM

Who the fuck is this dirty hippie eddie sharpe? checked out their myspace, they seem to think they are popular...with who? fucking sucks. gosh.

this is the worst collection of style i have seen in ages. preictible but fucking atrocious. at grizzly bear may be the only band that don't look like stupid shits and won't regret how dumb they look years from now.

style is different from trends, people.

Posted by Anonymous | August 10, 2010 12:16 PM

Girls from Warpaint are amazing people. Had the pleasure of meeting them a while back and it was nothing but good vibes and attitudes. They are on their way!

Posted by Anonymous | August 10, 2010 12:16 PM

amen, what the fuck ted casablancas? that jacket is ugly as fuck and pathetic as can be. you aren't in cruising. gosh.

Posted by Anonymous | August 10, 2010 12:17 PM

Girls from Warpaint are amazing people. Had the pleasure of meeting them a while back and it was nothing but good vibes and attitudes. They are on their way!

Posted by Anonymous | August 10, 2010 12:17 PM

Everyone in that crowd now has Ga Ga Vag Mites. Enjoy!

Posted by Anonymous | August 10, 2010 12:18 PM

the reason the xx are boring now is because they never replaced the band member who left.

Posted by Anonymous | August 10, 2010 12:18 PM

Wow, who is that doe-eyed shavey-headed sweetheart, third pic down in the Edward Sharpe & the Magnetic Zeroes set? Seemingly naked, probably high, and absolutely straight from my 9th grade dreams. Come.. to... Butthead.. ??

Posted by Anonymous | August 10, 2010 12:21 PM

I saw them with the chick who left and they were boring then, too.

Posted by Anonymous | August 10, 2010 12:29 PM

11:31... i was there.... agreed.

Posted by Anonymous | August 10, 2010 12:47 PM

"Best festival around, hands down."

i would disagree. when you have two of the main draw bands (soundgarden , arcade fire) head to head and have a curfew before midnight (leaving you to see most bands during sunlight) there is no way this is the best festival. bonnaroo you get an additional 5 hours of music a night which over the course of the 3.5 days gives you a day more of music and hardly ever puts bands the same crowd would want to see up against each other. i'm not a big gaga fan but you'd think the pop crowd would have wanted to see her and the strokes also.

someone hasnt been to indio calfornia

Posted by Anonymous | August 10, 2010 12:47 PM

11:20- wild beasts were amazing at mhow.

Posted by Anonymous | August 10, 2010 12:49 PM

best bands of the weekend were the strokes, grizzly bear, phoenix, arcade fire, dirty projectors and spoon.

The xx was a massive snoozefest of a let down.

Posted by Anonymous | August 10, 2010 12:50 PM

Biggest talked-about let downs of the weekend were Lady Gaga, The XX and MGMT.

But the last one was just from people who didn't already know that MGMT sucks live. And also from people hoping they were just going to play the hits and get off the stage.

Posted by Anonymous | August 10, 2010 12:58 PM

By 3/4 into the XX's set, most of the crowd was gone. Maybe they should reverse their set order.

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

This simply isn't accurate. The crowd was into them. Just because people aren't moshing like idiots doesn't mean they're not into a set.

FUCK LADY GA GA

Posted by Anonymous | August 10, 2010 2:12 PM

pretty sure 1995 was the best year:

Sonic Youth, Pavement, Beck, Jesus Lizard, Superchunk, Elastica, Courtney Love punching Kathleen Hannah.

Posted by Anonymous | August 10, 2010 2:52 PM

Mighty Mighty Bosstones opened up the main stage in 1995. Fun show. I remember catching a rose thrown by Justine of Elastica and me and another dude playing tug of war for it.

Posted by Anonymous | August 10, 2010 3:05 PM

best festival?
is someone forgetting altamont?

Posted by Anonymous | August 10, 2010 4:17 PM

Seems like most of the people bitching about The xx haven't really heard much of their music, their songs are not exactly jump up and down and go crazy kind of tunes...

Posted by Anonymous | August 10, 2010 4:42 PM

why so many soft/blurry/bad photos? weak photography for bv.

Posted by Anonymous | August 10, 2010 5:01 PM

Courtney Love punching Kathleen Hannah?

I'm glad to learn that Courtney's life hasn't entirely been wasted.

Posted by Crosseyed Sniper | August 10, 2010 5:23 PM

I like to go to lalapalooza cause it makes me feel indie in a bro kinda way.

Posted by Anonymous | August 10, 2010 5:48 PM

Ah Lollapalooza 1995 at Randall's Island! Met Donna Matthews from Elastica in the crowd. She looked taken back by my gawky late teenage enthusiasm.

Beck, who was apparently playing bits from Odelay, got practically booed offstage. At one point, he was hit the stomach by a projectile just as he started admonishing the crowd.

I agree that was an awesome line-up.

Posted by Anonymous | August 10, 2010 6:23 PM

Yeah, I think the argument for "best" is in the context of the modern-day, one location Lollapaloozas.

Posted by Anonymous | August 10, 2010 6:30 PM

the first lolla in chicago in 2005 was the best. as far as the crowd statistics, that is the total for all 3 days. divide that by 3 and get 70-80,000 a day.

Posted by Anonymous | August 10, 2010 9:34 PM

I think this was a good time, but I came prepared... I brought thefollowing items:
1. Bottles of water
2. Skunk weed
3. Ear plugs (lady gaga was there remember)
4. A few hummus sandwhiches.

Posted by Anonymous | August 11, 2010 3:21 AM

um hello...CUT (motherfucking) COPY...best fucking set period. asshole photographers are too busy watching green day to catch the most fun we had all weekend

Posted by Anonymous | August 12, 2010 1:14 AM

Courtney Love punching Kathleen Hannah?

I'm glad to learn that Courtney's life hasn't entirely been wasted.

Posted by Crosseyed Sniper | August 10, 2010 5:23

Yes both of them of full of it.

Posted by Anonymous | August 12, 2010 2:58 AM

Excuse my typo. Both of them are full of themselves.

Posted by Anonymous | August 12, 2010 2:59 AM

Word 1:14 AM.

Posted by Anonymous | August 12, 2010 3:13 PM

Damm when did people get so freaking hip. I need to break out my lilac love sponge and peckerwood filled calculator to compare these days to the young pterodactyls that have the book of jive in their underoos.
Damm baby I need fishnet niiiiiiiiiples!
