Omar Souleyman at Summerstage (more by Andrew Frisicano)
Omar Souleyman

Between [sets by Tinariwen and Toubab Krewe], Syrian "techno" artist Omar Souleyman made his New York debut. He succeeded in getting the crowd up and dancing, and he had a belly dancer on stage for part of the set (with a DJ set between). -[Andrew Frisicano in July]
After debuting in NYC last month, Omar Souleyman is on his way back to the area having scheduled a show on November 2nd at Music Hall of Williamsburg. Tickets go on sale Thursday (8/26) at noon.

Souleyman released his new compilation Jazeera Nights this year via Sublime Frequencies. Though Souleyman has been performing for more than fifteen years, the release is only his third available in the US. Culled from live recordings spanning 1995 and 2009, Jazeera Nights is out now.

A hummus queen is a gay man who is attracted to Middle Eastern or Arab men. This slang term references a popular Middle Eastern food as shorthand for “Arab men.” Hummus queens actively seek out Arab or Middle Eastern partners because they are fascinated by the appearance of Middle Eastern men, or because they wish to connect with Middle Eastern culture and traditions. Given the rich physical and cultural diversity of the Arab community, hummus queens are by no means limited when they seek out partners.

For Arab men, homosexuality can be extremely dangerous. Despite the fact that homosocial relationships are abundant and widely accepted in the Middle East, actual homosexuality is frowned upon, and gay Arabs face being penalized by the government or ostracized by their families. As a result, some choose to flee to more permissive regions of the world where they can live more freely, and, along the way, many encounter hummus queens.

Although the hummus queen is a relatively small demographic in the rich and very diverse homosexual community, some dating sites have recognized the hummus queen, setting up sections for Arab gays to meet up with hummus queens. Dance clubs sometimes have night dedicated to Arab and Middle Eastern hookups, and hummus queens also form their own social groups to meet with like-minded people; many of them connect with gay Arab associations as well.

As a general rule, this term is used specifically to refer to people who are not of Middle Eastern or Arab descent; classically, it refers to European and American gay men. A hummus queen may meet with a varying degree of success in his dating life. Some Arab and Middle Eastern gays may prefer to date within their own cultural group, while others are more open to intercultural dating. However, some dislike the idea of being fetishized, and they may specifically avoid hummus queens on the dating scene in a preference for less superficially-minded partners.

Posted by Anonymous | August 25, 2010 2:39 PM

it would be pretty hilarious to see the IP address of the BV comments section, only to find that most of these conversations are really just one person talking to themselves.

Posted by Anonymous | August 25, 2010 2:45 PM

really wondering why someone here hasn't started a band with "hummus" in their name yet. you'd have instant web buzz. c'mon, there's gotta be some musicians here. i'm a drummer & guitarist, but i'm way too busy to get something going

Posted by Anonymous | August 25, 2010 2:53 PM

The "meh" jokes are not funny. The "hummus" jokes are funny, because they are true. This is the final opinion. The hummus jokes may continue.

Posted by Anonymous | August 25, 2010 2:54 PM

2:54, couldn't have said it better.

Looks like comments trying to be funny from inadequate eastern European transplants.

Posted by Anonymous | August 26, 2010 6:24 AM

seriously, ban the IP of the hummus commenter. it's not funny and it distracts from the actually funny/pertinent comments.

Posted by Anonymous | August 26, 2010 9:07 AM

This is a hoax, it's Borat's new character. Wait, the movie will be out in 2011.

Posted by Anonymous | August 26, 2010 12:04 PM
