Les Claypool
Primus

Primus triumphantly reunited for their first new tour in four years with gypsy punks Gogol Bordello, whipping the crowd into a mindless frenzy at the Williamsburg Waterfront Friday night (7/30). While its not surprising that one of the most irreverent and technically proficient groups of the "alternative" era were so powerful after such a long break from recording, what was intriguing was their ability to engage the crowd so thoroughly.

A lot has happened in 26 years of Primus's existence. Drummer Jay Lane left the band early and took a prolonged stay in patchouli country, playing with Bob Weir and Ratdog followed by Further. Leader Les Claypool dabbled a bit in that direction on his solo material, but always with an eye for innovative funk, avant-garde jazz, and futurism with a focus on his singular bass technique. Guitarist Larry LaLonde did session and touring work with artists like Tom Waits and Serj Tankian of System Of A Down.

So coming into this show, it was evident that the wide range of recent musical endeavors held by the three members would play interestingly under the guise of Primus. The end result was still a rock show tour de force, even if moments felt less Primus at full steam ahead and more like the confluence of these musical minds reinterpreting their previous work. The drums were looser on some numbers, like on the rollicking "Over The Falls." LaLonde's guitar was abrasive yet increasingly more blues-tinged and raggedy. It was Primus stretched out and muted, yet still brimming with aggression and plenty of warped imagery.

That said, Primus still proved capable of inciting furor on early classics like "Jerry Was a Race Car Driver," "Harold of the Rocks," and "Tommy the Cat", and it was a relief to see that Primus indeed still "sucks."

Nas & Damian Marley played the same venue one night later. Primus's setlist with more pictures and some video from the Friday night show, below...

This was without a doubt the absolute most fun show I have been to all year. 5 Days later and I'm still sore and bruised. I CAN'T wait for their return in November.
PRIMUS SUCKS!

Posted by Anonymous | August 3, 2010 12:46 PM

Primus sounded amazing, but the crowd ruined this show a bit for me, mostly due to the amount of drugs. Believe me, I have no problem with people getting stoned at a show, but when I have cracked out fat guys dancing all over me no matter where I go in the venue, it puts a damper on the experience...

Does Primus do "DMV" anymore..that and "Damn Blue Collar Tweekers" was dope back in the day!

Posted by Anonymous | August 3, 2010 12:54 PM

their return in November? where are they playing they have some local shows Pa and Nj in October...this show was awesome... not enough frizzle fry though....

Posted by Anonymous | August 3, 2010 12:55 PM

@ 12:49 - The crowd was awesome. Lots of love and good vibes and people having a blast. You're clearly a douche. I brought my 47 year old brother and even he was dancing his ass off!

Posted by Anonymous | August 3, 2010 12:57 PM

hearing this makes me realize that some music just hasnt stood up to the test of time.

Posted by Anonymous | August 3, 2010 1:03 PM

@12:49 - Sounds like this show was amazing. People like you ruin shows, not 'cracked out fat guys.'

Posted by Anonymous | August 3, 2010 1:10 PM

"hearing this makes me realize that some music just hasnt stood up to the test of time"

Hey, it's cool that you'd rather listen to MGMT. No one's judging you....b!tch!

Posted by Anonymous | August 3, 2010 1:14 PM

i saw gogol in december at webster hall and i was kinda disappointed by this show, although primus was amazing as usual

Posted by Anonymous | August 3, 2010 1:18 PM

hearing this makes me realize that some music just hasnt stood up to the test of time.

Fact: Les is more talented than every combined band you listen to.

Posted by Anonymous | August 3, 2010 1:18 PM

i actually agree with 103p. this coming from a huge primus fan who first saw them in 1993. the music stands.. but the performances aren't what they used to be. or maybe they just need herb back on drums..

Posted by Anonymous | August 3, 2010 1:25 PM

Who is drumming now? Brain?

Posted by Anonymous | August 3, 2010 1:28 PM

Jay Lane

Posted by Anonymous | August 3, 2010 1:37 PM

i miss pre-mainstream gb shows.

Posted by Anonymous | August 3, 2010 1:50 PM

i thought herb was back in the band, makes missing the show sting a little less i guess. little light on the frizzle fry, but pretty nice set otherwise. no too many pups?

Posted by Anonymous | August 3, 2010 2:06 PM

Did anyone go to the afterparty at Brooklyn Bowl? Does anyone know who that horrendous DJ with the cowboy hat who came on after Hutz was? A friend of the band's?

Posted by Anonymous | August 3, 2010 2:06 PM

Dope Shots, kid. Really great lighting.

Posted by Julian Mackler | August 3, 2010 2:10 PM

@2:06 (#1):

You do realize that Jay Lane was drumming for Primus about 4-5 years before Herb came into the picture right? He totally killed it too.

Posted by Anonymous | August 3, 2010 2:19 PM

right, and they got their record deal when herb jumped onboard.

Posted by Anonymous | August 3, 2010 2:27 PM

other girl from gogol is no mas

Posted by Anonymous | August 3, 2010 3:11 PM

The girl doesn't stop talking through the entire 'jerry' clip on youtube above. you new yorkers are awesome.

Posted by Anonymous | August 3, 2010 4:27 PM

i miss pre-mainstream gogol shows as well... all of my friends got into gogol through trans-continental-hustle, which in my opinion some of their weaker, more commercial material... start playing old stuff... please...

Posted by Anonymous | August 3, 2010 6:45 PM

what are we all considering mainstream?

Posted by Anonymous | August 3, 2010 9:30 PM

I wish primus played more songs off of their album, "sailing the seas of hummus"

Posted by Anonymous | August 3, 2010 10:34 PM

gogol bordello's live set is always insane. even their videos. they just released one for pala tute.

Gotta admit, GB shows were crazier 3-4 years ago, but they are still fun. Miss the drum surfing.

Posted by Anonymous | August 3, 2010 11:46 PM

Now that I think about it, it was more like 4-5 years ago. Damn, I'm getting old.

Posted by Anonymous | August 4, 2010 12:10 AM

I think gogol shows got weaker once that Gypsy Punks cd came out. Or maybe it was just Eugene's ego that soured me. However, with that said, they're still one of the best live shows out there. Great set. Pedro rocks.

Posted by Anonymous | August 4, 2010 9:31 AM

No "Wynona's Big Brown Beaver"? Horseshit.

Posted by Funderburgh | August 4, 2010 10:34 AM

@9:30

when cellphone cams outnumbered dinamo kiev shirts in the crowd..

Posted by Anonymous | August 4, 2010 10:59 AM

what an awesome show... incredible venue.
Primus crushed it, clearly a bit more mellow & more jamming than in the 90s but thats to be expected. The songs still sounded fresh (and the sound quality was excellent). Crowd went nuts. I think Herb was missed on the drums tho (jay lane was a bit dull apart from the drum solo). Bring on the new primus album
