"Sharon Jones absolutely murdered celebrate Brooklyn last night. #legendaryshit #ilovethatwoman" - Sleek

Sharon Jones & Lee Fields
Sharon Jones

"Wow...just wow. I don't know why it took me so long to experience the stunning Sharon Jones & the Dap-Kings, but lawdy, I'm sure glad I went to the concert that closed out a great summer of Celebrate Brooklyn! at the Prospect Park Bandshell and finally got to witness the phenomenon that she is. Sharon Jones blew my mind with her energy, singing, dancing -- you name it, she was a solid gold MVP, James Brown heir-apparent. For 2+ hours, she and her stellar bandmates (including members of the Bushwick Philharmonic) kept the [very large] crowd on their feet, grooving along to a wonderful retro-soul/funk sound that did not let up. She was also assisted on a few songs by the charming Lee Fields." [Qbertplaya]
If there's one show I regret missing by going out of town this past weekend, it was definitely the Daptone one in Prospect Park. More pictures and videos from Sharon Jones's Saturday night free Celebrate Brooklyn show (The Budos Band opened up the night), below...

Two hours of wink-wink irony-free soul-shakin'. That's a show!

free show of the weekend. 20,000 people.

Looks like a lot more fun than last weekend's Sonic Youth show. Damn, I should've saved my hard earned $0.00 for this one.

sonic youth was >.

Thanks for the quote, Brooklyn Vegan.

The show was amazing. I daresay my favorite of the year (so far), even topping Arcade Fire a few days before. Sharon Jones' joy in performing for us was overwhelming.

Best show of the year in Brooklyn.

"this show was great. but it kinda seems like nobody has ever seen sharon jones before the way people are talking."

I agree. Great great show, but every show in the past 8 years have been great.

Wished they would retire the "soul train" bit. First time it was cool, second time was interesting, after that it just gets old.

i still have (shockingly) never gotten off my ass for one of her shows, and for that i am sorry. next time, definitely.

Maybe a lot of people did catch Sharon Jones for the first time? She did not let down. That's for sure. No one has presence like her.

phenomenal, that's the only word I can think of. utterly blown away. The Budos Band was incredible too. And i've NEVER seen so many people at any of the Celebrate Brooklyn shows i've been to in my 15 years in New York. Granted, I missed the Sonic Youth show, imagine that was mobbed too, but this was insane, the band must have been so psyched!

I think they might need to build a bigger bandshell?

Great show ..was my puppy's first Sharon Jones show and she loved it.

The Budos release their 3rd album today -- The Budos Band III. Awesome. Super heavy and raw.

Sharon was great. I was front row for both Sharon & Metric and Metric crowd had higher energy though.

Sounds like no one has seen her before. Even if you don't want to pay, they have done tons of free shows: Prospect Park/Central Park/Battery Park/Rockfeller Park/BAM, not to mention cheap loft parties in WB/Bushwick.

@10:13 - AMEN! It's been on AOL streaming since last week, and i've listened to it every day! Time to purchase!

I've seen Sharon Jones a bunch -always great- but id never seen Lee Fields. He was fantastic. The two of them sounded so great together. I vote for a full-on Lee Fields/Sharon Jones collab record.

I want a Sharon Jones and the MGs collaboration record! Those 4 songs they did together were amazing.

@10:57 - Was that a reference to the Daptone / Dap-Kings or Brooklyn Vegan?

Posted by Anonymous | August 10, 2010 5:02 PM

I've seen her around 5 times now. Including JazzFest in NOLA this April, and her Valentines Day show at Nokia last year. This was the best performance she put on. She was absolutely shining and looked like a star from way back beyond the fence. It also helps that the Dap Kings have the best bass player in Brooklyn.

"FILE THIS UNDER: STUFF WHITE PEOPLE LIKE"

Tell that to the black people sitting next to me, and in the row in front of me, and lined up standing behind me, and everywhere I looked throughout the park - you tool.
