DOWNLOAD: Tennis - Baltimore (MP3)

Tennis

Concept albums are nothing new, but the story behind the latest seven-inch from the band Tennis feels pretty fresh. The summery, lo-fuzz songs on the "Marathon" EP, which was released this week on Underwater Peoples, are based on the sailing trip taken by the husband-and-wife duo Patrick Riley and Alaina Moore in 2009 -- an eight-month journey along the East Coast that took them from "Bimini Bay" in the Bahamas through "Marathon" Florida, "South Carolina" and up to "Baltimore" on their 30-foot "Cape Dory." Not bad for two kids from Denver who'd never sailed before.

With $1,600 and a knowledge of the seas that came entirely from "The Annapolis Book of Seamanship" and DVDs, the couple set off for a year of adventure (sharks, reefs, storms, navigating by hand-bearing compass) that would fulfill Riley's childhood dream. What they couldn't predict was that being cut off from the United States music scene -- limited power on the boat meant that they could only listen to a handful of songs every day -- meant they'd come to discover their own sound. [NY Times]

Much talked about Denver, CO duo Tennis are playing two shows in NYC this week: Cake Shop on Wednesday (8/25) with fellow Underwater Peoples bands Ducktails and Family Portrait, and Glasslands on Thursday (8/26) with Magic Bullets, Family Portrait, COOLRUNNINGS. That 7" EP is now sold out but you can still get it digitally from all the usual places. And if you want to learn more about Patrick and Alaina's adventures on the sea, you can read through the blog they kept during it.

I like going to the beach. I like surfing. I like smoking weed. And I like to listen to bands that write songs about it but don't actually do it.

Posted by Anonymous | August 23, 2010 5:06 PM

Posted by Anonymous | August 23, 2010 7:52 PM

7:52 of course they don't listen to music anymore, because hipsters don't actually listen to music anymore. Listening to music is soo......... 2009

Posted by Anonymous | August 23, 2010 8:42 PM

why write about Tennis when you can write about Washington DC's Tennis System. What the shit, dude.

Posted by Colonel K | August 23, 2010 10:20 PM

i will not listen to this. More blog market research. Tennis = Tesla of this, Wavves = Poison, Best Coast = Lita Ford. So on and so forth. Crap crap crap. I already know what it sounds like before I listen to it and it sounds like crap.

And really, Tennis and that dude from real estate are going to be at the cake shop on the same night? I can only imagine the buzz that will be emanating from the basement. Buzz of crap. Absolute crap.

Posted by Anonymous | August 23, 2010 10:27 PM

you guys let everyone else dictate what you should listen to wayyyy too much

truth.

Hardly any band that gets mentioned on this or any other big blog is without a P.R. team. When you think about that fact, it kind of makes sense that most of the bands are comprised of milquetoast upper class honkeys. It'd be great if one of these major blogs wrote about something of their own volition for once.

Posted by yup | August 24, 2010 1:18 AM

Also yeah, please no more beach. While these pretty young white people are SAILING YACHTS AND WRITING SONGS ABOUT THE BAHAMAS, people across the world are being brutalized. Way to be completely and transparently out of touch with everything.

Posted by yup | August 24, 2010 1:26 AM

hey losers commenting, do you even listen to music?

Posted by Anonymous | August 23, 2010 7:52 PM

Oh course they do because hipsters are full time scenesters with a pool of money from the parents that lets them go out every other night as their full time lifestyle. They sure are not reading any newspapers or anything unless its NY music related.

And well said 5:02
Maybe get a job as a ship maker or miniature pony salesman.
Everyone ones in a band now days and its the worst time for music with 90 percent of the groups.

Everyone needs to be on a podium with their grandiose ideas.

Tennis does not have a "PR Team." you are idiots self fulfilling your own prophecies. you tell eachother something is fake, it becomes fake.

you tell each other the musicians in tennis are rich, or out of touch or whatever... and it becomes true.

everyone you're talking about is reachable by email. you could, theoretically, know for sure...

and i suspect, if you contacted whatever "PR Team" you deem is responsible for this blog post, you'd be surprised at what you found.

let alone if you actually tried contacting Tennis.

you are a sad bunch
