Paste

"We heard earlier today that Paste Magazine was in imminent danger of folding. Looks like it's already happened.

A tipster tells us "They announced it internally yesterday in an afternoon meeting, giving employees approx... 2 hours notice." Rough. A few (former) Paste editors took to Twitter:" [Gawker]

UPDATE: a message from Paste below...

FROM PASTE

Today Paste Media Group announces, with deepest sadness, the suspension of the Paste magazine print product.

Struggles with mounting debt were made public last year when our readers responded with generosity to save the magazine. But the prolonged downturn of the ad market has forced a hiatus. All subscribers have access to the digital version of their magazines through the June/July issue on PasteMagazine.com. Paste, while considering strategic alternatives, is focusing on its digital assets, including PasteMagazine.com.

We thank all of those who have shown such tremendous support to a vision of independent media focused on Signs of Life in Music, Film & Culture, including subscribers, advertisers, writers, photographers, illustrators, publicists, record labels, movie studios, book & game publishers and others in the press.

let the hate flow BV commenters. kick them even harder now that they're down. take out all that irrepressible angst you have building up inside you on account of too many nights pounding pbr and doing nothing with your life.

Now who will cover Zooey Deschanel's vanity projects?!

Posted by Anonymous | September 1, 2010 3:31 PM

What is a genre? And can I invent a new one?
How about "hummus-wave"

Posted by Anonymous | September 1, 2010 3:32 PM

I wish hummus guy was dead instead

Posted by monkey paw | September 1, 2010 3:36 PM

what the hell is paste magazine?

Posted by Anonymous | September 1, 2010 3:36 PM

The simply needed to run a few more "art nude" covers to spice things up and keep the circulation flowing.

Posted by Anonymous | September 1, 2010 3:37 PM

Regardless of any meaningless comments here by pita-bread-bearing hummus lovers and others, this is not good news for anyone who loves reading about music/pop culture in the print media. I don't necessarily mean, "Ooh, Paste is gone, my world is over," I just mean it in a broader sense.

Are people really surprised that a print magazine has folded?

Posted by Anonymous | September 1, 2010 3:43 PM

Indie 1 - Paste 0

Posted by Anonymous | September 1, 2010 3:45 PM

no one said they were surprised bro

Posted by Anonymous | September 1, 2010 3:45 PM

print media is over. get used to it.

Posted by Anonymous | September 1, 2010 3:47 PM

two hours notice sure, but they must've known this was coming for years

Posted by hotdogs | September 1, 2010 3:48 PM

i remember 'paying what i wish' for a subscription...i offered $1 and i think i got ripped off.

Posted by Anonymous | September 1, 2010 3:57 PM

I guess we'll wait & see if Flipside Magazine is next.

Posted by Anonymous | September 1, 2010 3:58 PM

They should have started an indie music blog which ran countless Live Nation and Bowery Presents ads to generate revenue :-)

Posted by Anonymous | September 1, 2010 3:58 PM

I'm still surprised that Rolling Stone still bothers. Who the fuck buys that rag?

Posted by Anonymous | September 1, 2010 4:18 PM

4:18, I rubbed one out to last weeks Katy Perry issue...does that count?

Posted by Anonymous | September 1, 2010 4:24 PM

I get Rolling Stone free for a year from some Ticketmaster purchase I made.

But I still use National Geographic when I want to "rub one out".

Posted by Anonymous | September 1, 2010 4:33 PM

Hummus is a kind of paste, no? If ever there was a more appropriate thread...Get to it, script kiddies!

Posted by Motor Oil | September 1, 2010 4:52 PM

shoot some of your jizz into hummus and make paste

Posted by Anonymous | September 1, 2010 5:00 PM

What's a magazine?

Posted by Anonymous | September 1, 2010 5:06 PM

If print media's over, what will take its place for decent, professional writers? Will everyone end up writing for Pitchfork for forty cents a word? Online ad revenues are a pittance compared to print.

Posted by Anonymous | September 1, 2010 5:14 PM

The new model is to try to charge for online content. The ny times is said to be going this route in 2011.

Posted by Anonymous | September 1, 2010 5:21 PM

now what will i read? oh yeah, a billion other ghey ad-zines, but for free

Posted by Anonymous | September 1, 2010 5:22 PM

that thing was 2 pages thick anyway. i wont miss it.

Posted by Anonymous | September 1, 2010 5:30 PM

Oh please, Vice be next!

Posted by Anonymous | September 1, 2010 5:32 PM

I can't remember the last time that I bought a magazine, let alone Paste. Still though....RIP.

Posted by Anonymous | September 1, 2010 5:47 PM

i dont know where im going to get my music news now....FUCK!!!!!!!!

Posted by Anonymous | September 1, 2010 6:03 PM

Who will fawn over Coldplay and other blase indie-adult-contemporary bands!!! OMG THIS IS HORRIBLE>>>>!!!!!!1

Posted by Anonymous | September 1, 2010 6:17 PM

pitchfork pays 40 cents a word?

Posted by Anonymous | September 1, 2010 7:06 PM

haha vice isn't going anywhere. they don't actually depend on the magazine to bring in money.

Posted by Anonymous | September 1, 2010 7:38 PM

^it's true, they have a grassroots capitalism business model

Posted by Anonymous | September 1, 2010 8:17 PM

"grassroots capitalism business model"

Is that code for: deal drugs?

Posted by Anonymous | September 1, 2010 8:22 PM

5:14, that's a great question.

Posted by Anonymous | September 1, 2010 8:27 PM

Good riddance.

Posted by Anon | September 1, 2010 9:06 PM

most mags are kinda worthless (except for the Economist) now as blogs are more accessible and always updated.

Posted by Anonymous | September 1, 2010 10:47 PM

"giving employees approx... 2 hours notice"
This is exactly like the evil darth vader idiots that ran Woxy. What has happened to us? A 27 year old indie rock brand crushed in less than 6 months by one idiot. Moved it to Austin in search for cool, had zero business plan, hired good people, lied, and then ran away when shit hit the fan. If anyone finds that John guy in the street, offer him a crotch punch for the people that he screwed. I'm sure he's in witness protection by now. PasteWoxyFuckYeahRules.

Posted by cornelius | September 2, 2010 12:02 AM

That John guy was a typical LA douchebag. He shouldn't have been allowed anywhere near WOXY. I talked to that prick on the phone once and felt like I had to take a shower after he hung up.

Posted by Anonymous | September 2, 2010 12:27 AM

I guess I'm old (early 30s), but I still buy print mags (esp. MOJO and other British ones). Paste, however, tried to be too many things to too many people and succeeded at none of it. Still, I'm always sad to see a print mag bite the dust.

Posted by Anonymous | September 2, 2010 10:22 AM

where am i going to get my music news now???? FUUUUUUUCCCCCKKKK!

Posted by Anonymous | September 2, 2010 1:47 PM

Sign of the times. Blogs are where I get my music news. Print is expensive and overrated. I hated Paste since they ran MEHko Case on the front anyway...
