Shonen Knife

Now that Shonen Knife have revisited their LPs Free Time and 2007's fun! fun! fun! to give them the English workover complete with bonus tracks (order them), the Japanese band are about to invade our shores with their overtly cutesy Japanese pop-punk. The tour kicked off 9/8 in Seattle and will bring the band to NYC on 9/25 at The Asia Society (tickets) and 9/28 at Knitting Factory with Hard Nips and Grooms (tickets). All dates below.

If you can't make it to a show, you can at least pick up the band's new DVD Live At Mohawk Place. The live video was recorded in Buffalo, NY at Mohawk Place and features 18 songs, including one with original member Atsuko, and exclusive interview footage. Order a copy via the label.

Video from that DVD, some other video from two nights ago, and all tour dates are below...

Can someone break down how this band went from touring with Nirvana and Sonic Youth, doing harsh n heavy noise-jams to becoming straight J-Pop?

I saw them last year, and a few years before that. Their sound has been consistent.
Maybe not as heavy as the previous decade but it's far from 'straight j-pop'.
If they were, their vocals would be autotuned and instruments would be replaced by some dj spinning techno beats.

They've been around for like what? 30 years, and only one original member remains. give them a break.

I saw them in Oakland on Saturday and they were loud as hell. Definitely not J-pop.

And I saw them in NY at Tramps probably 15 or so years ago -- and they were loud as hell.

The two new members are likely more talented than their predecessors, but the band played a much longer set when I saw them years ago.

And the singer/guitarist is 49! She still looks damn good!
