This is ridiculous. What happened, 10 or 20 isn't enough? Next week Pitchfork and Stereogum will team up to present the top 240 1990's albums that will be taken on the road in 2011. A tie for first between Wheatus and Weezer.

Did I miss something? Is it 2011 already?

Posted by Anonymous | September 1, 2010 3:47 PM

Well, looks like it's back to bed for me.

Posted by Anonymous | September 1, 2010 3:50 PM

It's all kind of one sound, isn't it. Like "Top 40 New Bands of 2010 That Are Signed to Captured Tracks or True Panther, or Sound Like They Could Be."

HEY!!! No Beach Fossils???

Posted by Anonymous | September 1, 2010 4:06 PM

Uh, top 40 bands that nobody will care about in ....6 months?

Posted by Anonymous | September 1, 2010 4:15 PM

40? I can barely think of 3 good new bands...

Posted by Anonymous | September 1, 2010 4:18 PM

Several excellent new bands...none on this list.

Posted by Hank | September 1, 2010 4:34 PM

teengirl fantasy is the only band that is worth your time on that list.

Posted by Anonymous | September 1, 2010 4:39 PM

How To Dress Well is quite possibly the worst band name ever and from what i've heard the music is pretty lame, too

Posted by Anonymous | September 1, 2010 4:42 PM

Lower dens is the best album on that list.
My opinion...

Posted by Anonymous | September 1, 2010 4:42 PM

40 bands with good pr and/or connected friends in brooklyn

Posted by Anonymous | September 1, 2010 4:42 PM

when did stereogum become such a joke? it seems like they only write about their friends bands from NYC or bands that are already getting tons of buzz on p4k.

Posted by Anonymous | September 1, 2010 4:42 PM

tame impala is about the only band on this list that i think is really a great new band.

Posted by Anonymous | September 1, 2010 4:42 PM

Tame Impala are pretty cool, but are they even new?

Posted by Anonymous | September 1, 2010 4:44 PM

all these bands suck

Posted by Anonymous | September 1, 2010 4:49 PM

FYI these bands are in alphabetical order and not ranked from best to worst

Posted by Josh | September 1, 2010 4:50 PM

@4:44 they released their first full length this year so i guess that makes them new.

Posted by Anonymous | September 1, 2010 4:50 PM

I think this is more about Stereogum saying "Hey, look how many new bands I know about!!"

Posted by Anonymous | September 1, 2010 5:01 PM

I'm cool and I've never heard of any of these bands

Posted by Anonymous | September 1, 2010 5:07 PM

just another illustration of how lame "indie" music is right now

Posted by Anonymous | September 1, 2010 5:16 PM

zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

Posted by Anonymous | September 1, 2010 5:17 PM

Gold Panda makes the list?

they totally snubbed Gold Zebra

and
Gold Lion
Gold Bear
Gold Crystal Wolf Girls Cloud Neon

Posted by Anonymous | September 1, 2010 5:58 PM

what about Twin Shadow?

Thumbs up for Mr. Dream, Zola Jesus and Tame Impala

Posted by Anonymous | September 1, 2010 6:08 PM

how many bands are with certain pr firms and booking agencies....just sayin

Posted by Anonymous | September 1, 2010 6:12 PM

No Woven Bones?

Posted by Anonymous | September 1, 2010 6:20 PM

i challenge the stereogum clone that made that list to name 2 of their favorite songs off any of those bands albums. if you can't do that then fuck off with your list, you read p4k and listened once like everyone else.

Posted by Anonymous | September 1, 2010 6:21 PM

Where is Punches on this list?

Posted by Anonymous | September 1, 2010 6:22 PM

NO FANG ISLAND??!!! WHAT A SILLY LIST.

Posted by Anonymous | September 1, 2010 6:24 PM

Most of these bands are made of kids who thought they were cool because they bought clothes at Urban Outfitters, that didn't look like they were actually purchased there. Paying out the ass to look cheap and used.

The majority of the bands here play vapid, jangly crap
rock that is more disposable than a fresh bag filled with steaming dog shit. Seriously folks, learn to play your instruments....image (or lack thereof) can only carry you so far.

Posted by Anonymous | September 1, 2010 6:49 PM

Having not heard the majority of these bands I can't judge. But I can read their names. And it is finally official: band names are worse than ever.

Posted by Anonymous | September 1, 2010 7:38 PM

I can't believe Shithead didn't make the list. Their new seven inch is better than anything on this list.

Posted by Anonymous | September 1, 2010 7:54 PM

Julian Lynch is not a band. He's a solo artist. He also released his first album before 2010 so he should not be considered a "new artist". I just mind fucked the shit out of this list,

Posted by Anonymous | September 1, 2010 9:12 PM

Big Troubles

Posted by Anonymous | September 1, 2010 9:13 PM

candy claws were one of the worst shows i've ever seen. seeing them on this list immediately discredits it.

Posted by Anonymous | September 1, 2010 9:57 PM

How come the new hip bands, "The Hummus Mehs" & "The Hummus Queens" didn't make the list?

Posted by Anonymous | September 1, 2010 10:24 PM

active child #1?? please...it's not a terrible list and I think it reflects 2010 decently well. Can't really think of any '2010' bands other than a few chillwave acts

Posted by Anonymous | September 1, 2010 10:44 PM

Stereogum became a joke when Scott had a baby and gave up caring about music. Brandon is a great writer, but he is way more into metal, and that Amrit guy has always been an idiot and a terrible writer.
Stereogum is way over.

Posted by Anonymous | September 1, 2010 10:54 PM

I don't know if Scott having a baby had anything to do with it, but ever since he let the site get bought out for a lofty sum of money and ads filling up the entire thing (seriously, you can't even read the posts anymore because of the way the ads contrast with the text) the content has gone downhill. Its like they're playing it too safe and there's no personality on the site anymore. It used to be one of my favs, now its just rehash of stuff I've already seen or read elsewhere.

Posted by Anonymous | September 1, 2010 11:21 PM

@10:44 its alphabetical moron.
+yr all really that mad?
most of these bands/solo artists are great!
geez. go shit on something worth shitting on!

Posted by Anonymous | September 1, 2010 11:28 PM

this list is amrit's insurance for free drinks and guestlist spots.

only thing is that nobody reads stereogum since that hideous redesign.

Posted by Anonymous | September 1, 2010 11:48 PM

they should rename this list the "40 Biggest Pussies Ever of 2010"... seriously, when the fuck did being a "band" ever equate to two fucktards with a laptop and a delay pedal hooked up to a floor tom? bands have fucking guitars, bass, drums, and play loud as fuck. i wish people would get over this chillwave, witch house, whiney baby pussy music and that all new "bands" sounded like Dinosaur Jr and Superchunk, and not like a bunch of crybaby boners whose primary influences is whatever Animal Collective just shat out of their buttholes. seriously, what happened to ROCK?

Posted by Anonymous | September 1, 2010 11:58 PM

11:58
Your answer is this. We as a generation have turned into a bunch of faggot pussies that take medication and pills when we can't handle life and only concern ourselves with facebook BS.
If Robert Johnson were alive, he would crush all beings alive today.

Posted by Anonymous | September 2, 2010 12:19 AM

Tennis should not be on the list. As a matter of fact 90% of these bands should not be on the list.

Posted by Anonymous | September 2, 2010 12:38 AM

BV feeding off the hate like a bad wrestler.

LOVE I dont get enough of it
all I get is these vampires and blood suckers
all I see is these niggas I’ve made millionnaires
milling about, spilling there feelings in the air
all I see is these fake fucks with no fangs
tryna draw blood with my ice cold veins
I smell a massacre
seems to be the only way to back you bastards up

Posted by Anonymous | September 2, 2010 12:48 AM

The only thing that's worst than this list is Pitchfork's Top 200 Songs of the 90s. Nevermind the fact that I'm sure there's no rhyme or reason to the bottom 100 songs, but they've been picking some pretty horrible songs for the sake of being Pitchfork.

Posted by Anonymous | September 2, 2010 12:54 AM

lower dens is the only worthwhile band I see on there.

zola jesus is alright too. "sea talk" is a pretty damn good track

Posted by Anonymous | September 2, 2010 1:11 AM

Only ones I care for and think are actually worthy... Best Coast, MNDR, and Tame Impala... The rest of those bands seem like just openers for better bands as an effort just to give them more newsworthiness than they even deserve - which should be NONE.

Posted by CNC | September 2, 2010 1:33 AM

>>Tiny Victories<<

Heard it here first.

Posted by Anonymous | September 2, 2010 6:44 AM

where is avi buffalo and Yu(c)k

Posted by csmith | September 2, 2010 10:38 AM

To those complaining about Active Child being #1...look a bit closer...the list is in alphabetical order.

Posted by Anonymous | September 2, 2010 11:35 AM

10:38, Stereogum had an odd way of choosing their bands. Basically they said some bands felt more like 2009 bands than 2010 bands if that makes any sense at all. (It doesn't, since Wild Nothing had some EPs out before this year, but low and behold the name is on the list yet Sleigh Bells who zero official releases up until this year was omitted.)

Posted by Anonymous | September 2, 2010 12:21 PM

it is all about cronyism with that site. and the redesign is terrible

Posted by Anonymous | September 2, 2010 1:49 PM

meconiumnyc.com isn't on the list?

Posted by Anonymous | September 2, 2010 2:51 PM

"only thing is that nobody reads stereogum since that hideous redesign."

honestly i used to go to stereogum a couple times a day. ever since the redesign i go maybe once a week or two.

Posted by Anonymous | September 2, 2010 3:18 PM

truth. sadly they need to fix the design

Posted by Anonymous | September 2, 2010 4:02 PM

Hummus Mehs are way better.

Posted by Anonymous | September 3, 2010 10:47 AM

The Hummus Mehs new album received a 10 from pitchfork.

Posted by Anonymous | September 3, 2010 11:11 AM

never heard of 95% of them...
