Phish parking lot (more by Ryan Barkan)
Phish

"Vampire Weekend's Tomson is upfront about his jam band days but protects the identities of others. "I don't want to out anybody," he says.

But [Real Estate's Alex] Bleeker sees greater acceptance on the horizon. It will be a vibe-heavy, groovy new world, where nobody will be ashamed to let their songs soar past the seven-minute mark. "I don't want 'jam band' to be a dirty word in the indie-rock community anymore," he says." [Washington Post]

it's so silly that the pitchfork reviewer in that article talks about how he used to hide the fact that he liked phish. who cares? i'm not a jamband/phish fan but since when is indie music about only liking a certain aesthetic and being ashamed to listen to other stuff.

This guy Bleeker from Real Estate makes me really nauseous. For some reason he seems to think people actually give a shit what he thinks and what his influences are. He's awkward, ugly and smells bad (and now we know from this article it's not just because he looks like a dirty hippy...he in fact is one). The only this I can say decent about him is that his album was so awfully boring and terrible it induced one of the better naps I've had all year.

i'm referring to his solo album by the way....not the Real Estate album which is actually quite good.

4:53 FTW!

also, jam bands are gey

4:52 You must not have been on BV very long. Indie fans will skewer anyone who thinks differently. Just peruse the comment board here.

Age of Aquarius please... I need to be on pegasus, never fall off, do pullups on a sunbeam, MOBBY GRAPE MAKES GOOD JAM

I'm on board with the Bleeker character assassination. He had it coming....

phish is the original indie music. hipsters these days are embarrassing.

Posted by Anonymous | September 3, 2010 5:25 PM

what's wrong with the 7 minute mark. psychy stuff like krautrock doesn't qualify as "jam band" ... i wish "Cousins" was below the 7 second mark

Posted by Anonymous | September 3, 2010 6:35 PM

hey 5:25, I love phish, but they arent the original ANYTHING.

There were many that came before them

come to think of it, none of these "indie" bands on here are original, and merely are copies of everything and anything that came before them

Learn some history before you appear ignorant.

FIRST WE CAN JAM, THEN WE CAN HAVE A SLUMBER PARTY!

Phish really sucks, guys. I mean, come on. Are we joking around here?

Posted by Anonymous | September 3, 2010 10:18 PM

i love indie and i love phish. who gives a shit?

Posted by Anonymous | September 3, 2010 10:22 PM

"Vampire Weekend is a cool band."

lol

Wow, a bunch of image obsessed assholes who think they should have shame for liking certain music. Guess what? No one gives a shit. Grow up and stop caring what other people think you fashioned obsessed assholes. You like The Dead? Cool. Like Phish? Whatever. String Cheese Incident? Knock yourself out. The only thing pathetic is thinking that other people are going to judge you for it you status obsessed assholes. That is even worse than how bad Phish are. See, I hate Phish (The Dead are cool) but don't hate you cause you like them. I hate you because you think it matters that you do and that you have to "admit" it. Fuck off you dumb shits.

There's this pretense to jam music, patchouli odor, tie dye patchwork clothing, that it's supposed to be good, that can also be found implicitly within indie music film and literature. Both sorts look down their noses at the other for valid reasons.

Improvisation is creation in the moment and should be encouraged and supported.

Jam bands are cotton candy for people who don't know what to listen to in music.

The following comment BEST describes jam bands-

"jam bands enjoy large quantities of hummus"

Posted by Anonymous | September 4, 2010 12:51 PM

"phish is the original indie music. hipsters these days are embarrassing."

There is a lot of truth to this statement. These guys built everything from the ground up, without any of the fast lived internet hype that bands generously experience now.

as music fans, we shouldn't allow any SQUARE MOTHERFUCKERS to dictate the temporal perimeters of what we love; just remember, the culture nazi's are everywhere, eager to pass their bourgeois judgements everything...

keep your mind and your music (AND IT'S FUCKING LENGTH) free!

Here's the thing. I guess jam bands are whatever. only problem is majority of poeple who like jam bands (or jazz or even guitar solos) do not understand music. Mars volta is a jam band and people stand around listening to them mess around with their instruments for 15 min a song and say ooo thats awsome.
Indie Rock is a post punk movement I hate having to go to bonarooo to se indie bands.
It should be about the music only, but when scenes are as diluted as they are now, we must not only strive to protect the music but we must protect the culture. I dont want to see rich kids with $700 dollar bongs and birkenstocks at a superchunk show ok?

Posted by douglad | September 5, 2010 4:45 PM

When college kids who listen to jam bands drop out and move to Brooklyn, they move on to indie bands.

"People who like...jazz...do not understand music."

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA
