any idea is b&s is going to get canceled? I know it's rain or shine but what about hurricane like winds?

The OSA is going to provide all of the gaunt hipsters with parachutes, to ensure that if they blow away, they'll be able to safely land back in Brooklyn.

Seriously? I love B&S but I don't want to go out in that bullshit tonight.
"Southerly winds will develop by late morning and steadily increase throughout the day. Sustained winds of 25 to 35 MPH with gusts up to 60 MPH are expected by late afternoon lasting through this evening."
"The worst effects of this storm, including its torrential rain and the strongest winds, will be occurring later this afternoon and tonight."
Posted by Anonymous | September 30, 2010 12:01 PM
It is going to rain on everybody's parade tonight! They should cancel well in advance instead of making everybody show up and then telling them to go home or else there will be a gaggle of irate B&S fans!
Posted by Anonymous | September 30, 2010 12:04 PM
Please cancel the show or move it to Terminal Five..
Posted by Anonymous | September 30, 2010 12:19 PM
i don't recall hearing any pavement fans complaining about the rain last week. you b&s fans should man up
Posted by Anonymous | September 30, 2010 12:20 PM
A quick passing shower is not the same thing as a tropical storm.
Posted by Anonymous | September 30, 2010 12:23 PM
Even a tropical storm doesn't mean constant thunder and lightning and torrential winds for hours and hours at a time, nonstop. A lot of forecasts are still calling for on-and-off rain until later in the evening. I can see why they'd want to hedge bets and not cancel only to have the rain not hit until 10 or 11.
It would be nice to have some notice and it sucks that it's not gonna be a nice night, but all of this TROPICAL STORM!!! TROPICAL STORM!!!! screaming sounds a little hysterical. Though I'm sure the weather people appreciate the attention.
Posted by Anonymous | September 30, 2010 12:33 PM
there is a very good possibility the worst of it will hit west of NYC.
Posted by Anonymous | September 30, 2010 12:42 PM
please cancel and reschedule somewhere nice and warm (and preferably seated) so all of us delicate b&s fans don't have to brave this awful weather
Posted by Anonymous | September 30, 2010 12:44 PM
They should move it somewhere indoors indeed. It is not a Bowery Presents show. It's AEG. Therefore Terminal 5 is not an option. They could move it to Best Buy Theater (Nokia), but there is another show there tonight. I'm not sure where else would be an option. I also rather they postpone it than going there tonight in this weather. Hopefully whatever they decide, they don't do it last minute.
Posted by Anonymous | September 30, 2010 12:46 PM
You pathetic losers. Go see Envy tonight. That is the only show worth going.
Posted by Anonymous | September 30, 2010 12:52 PM

I already got burned at Modest Mouse. I don't need to head out there (no umbrellas allowed, remember) get soaking wet and then have to leave with 7k other people when they call the show.
And I stood in the rain for pavement. slightly different circumstances...

I just called OSA to find out IF the show is canceled, how will we know? The woman who answered the phone completely bitched me out even though I asked very politely. The scoop is that:
- they "can't" cancel the show (for reasons I did not understand)
- "it's not even raining in Williamsburg" (oh, is the show right now and NOT in 6 hours?)
- umbrellas are not allowed because they are dangerous flying metal objects which attract lightning (wait, I thought if there is lightning, there's no show?)
- the show will probably be cut short (so if people are willing to brave the weather, they won't even get their $50's worth)
- if you dare to ask for the status of the show, you will be yelled at.
Thanks.

Belle and Sebastian, TONIGHT!
Kevin Wolfe Um, why???
Conditions sound like they're going to be dangerous. This is a disaster waiting to happen :(
Maxwell Bertolero what time does Belle and Sebastian go on?
Open Space Alliance for North Brooklyn We have to try to have the show... and Belle and Sebastian go on at 8pm
Darren O'Toole I'm gonna be really sad if the show goes on and I piss away $100 but for me I can't see the sense in driving two hours for this when weather.com is reporting heavy rains along with thunder/lighting expected..Do what you all have to do.
Kevin Wolfe Wow, seems irresponsible. Potentially endangering thousands of people. 50 mph winds and 7 inches of rain. Bad idea. And it will be a huge shitstorm after the show is cancelled a song or two in. Do the right thing, OSA.
Posted by Anonymous | September 30, 2010 2:44 PM

Posted by Anonymous | September 30, 2010 2:50 PM
Who cares what % chance of rain it is projected for during the day! The show is not happening right now. B&S will play from 8 to 10. For 9PM weather.com says Heavy Rain/Thunder with 90% chance.
Posted by Anonymous | September 30, 2010 2:52 PM
you need to learn to read weather.com
it says thunderstorm 7pm heavy rain 8pm.
TF will be play 5 songs and we go home.
people who are coming for this from all over should do what we do in amsterdam, burn OSA offices to the ground.
Posted by me | September 30, 2010 2:54 PM
2:54, weather.com currently says cloudy/wind from 5PM until 9PM. Then rain/thunder. Then heavy rain afterward.
AccuWeather also says cloudy around doors, but has rain starting around 8PM. No mention of thunder/lightning.
Are people doomsaying to justify flaking on their own $50 tickets, or what?
It will probably rain.
It might rain heavily.
It might just be on and off.
You can't actually will a show to get canceled by posting on BV. Just so you know.
Posted by Anonymous | September 30, 2010 3:01 PM
perhaps not, but self-obsessed promoters like OSA definitely read and care about what is said on sites like these...
letting this show go on is a jelly-level move
Posted by Anonymous | September 30, 2010 3:04 PM
3:04 I would hope so but they most likely only care about money...wait till they get sued for someone slipping or worse yet getting injured due to said storm.
Posted by Anonymous | September 30, 2010 3:06 PM
I guess the idea is it sucks to really not want to go but not get your money back for skipping... and I get that...
But in fairness, it says "RAIN OR SHINE" on the ticket. It's kinda weird to buy a ticket to a RAIN OR SHINE outdoor show and then say, waaaahhh, I don't wanna go in the rain, why can't they just cancel it and refund my money!
Uh, because I have a ticket too, and I'll go in the rain, I don't care. At least it's not cold. And it would really suck if they had to cancel even though it wasn't raining for 90% of the show time.
It's not as if they've been ambiguous about whether they planned to do the show. The only "IT'S TOTALLY GETTING CANCELED!!!" talk has come from, uh, irritable BV commenters.
Posted by Anonymous | September 30, 2010 3:09 PM
There's a difference between "rain" and "dangerous thunderstorm" you snark fuck. Or did you just move to Brooklyn after that major storm last week?
Posted by Anonymous | September 30, 2010 3:10 PM
so at best they gonna play 60 min set...
better cancel TF and put them on at 7pm.
Posted by me | September 30, 2010 3:12 PM
Of course all these pussy BS fans are worried about the rain. Lamest comments of the year aside from bitches working at OSA. Keep up the good work OSA! You guys are so important to the community and great at picking up trash while drunk on your aussie wine hoping someone throws you behind the mccarren park bathrooms and puts it in.
Posted by Anonymous | September 30, 2010 3:12 PM
Right, me, they did after all say that as soon as any rain falls, they'll stop playing immediately. Clearly they'll only play sixty minutes because there MIGHT be thunder at 9.
That said, moving the whole thing up would actually make a lot of sense, considering they have 90 minutes between doors and the opener, a 90 minutes that by most accounts should not be too rainy... but I guess that's probably unlikely at this point. As is a cancellation based on what MIGHT maybe happen in six hours.
Posted by Anonymous | September 30, 2010 3:16 PM
man, bv commenters will argue / make mean comments about any topic. of course weather forecasts are right up there with religion/abortion/the death penalty in terms of controversial topics so it's kind of understandable.

From the Belle and Sebastian site tour Q&A's
http://www.belleandsebastian.com/qa.php?about=tours
From: Lauren
Q.Stuart, I really love you guys and I've been so excited to finally see B&S in concert that I'm willing to do almost anything, including standing outside all night in a torrential rainstorm (I've got all my rain gear on!), but I'm really having doubts about going now because of the hazardous driving conditions (my street is already flooded and it's only been raining a few hours). This weather is an absolute disaster and I've been stressing over it for days! Whether you're able to play tonight or you end up canceling because of flooding or thunder, would you consider coming back to New York again? Even if it's not until next year? Just so I (and the other fans who aren't able to make it to Brooklyn today) have something to hold onto to?
A. if it can't go ahead, then we'll do everything possible to rearrange for the end of october, and if that's not happening, then of course we'll be back! come on, it's NY!
but i must stress, that as i write we're still all go for tonight..
will advise furthur later
x
Stuart - 30/09/10
From: Eva
Q.Forecast calls for heavy rain tomorrow for the waterfront show. Are you still going on or will it reschedule? love you guys, but would be a bummer to have to stand in the rain.
A. we thought a lot about it, but we're going to go ahead with it, unless conditions are so bad that they don't let us on the stage. there is no viable alternative ..
put your galoshes on and we'll have a ball!
Stuart - 30/09/10

Gotta love the assholes who call people pussies because they don't want to see a show during a dangerous thunderstorm. Hope you get struck by lightning soon.
Most people would not have bought a ticket at first place if they wanted their money back. Everyone would be happy if they could move this somewhere indoors though.
Posted by Anonymous | September 30, 2010 3:25 PM
man, Chavez was awesome last night.
Posted by Anonymous | September 30, 2010 3:34 PM
Sure, 3:25. Suggestions for where they might move it day-of? Please do not suggest places that:
a. already have a show booked
b. can't handle the waterfront capacity
c. don't actually have a stage
Gotta love assholes who buy a ticket to a rain-or-shine outdoor show and then complain about how it's gonna rain.
Posted by Anonymous | September 30, 2010 3:35 PM
anyone have a setlist for the GBV show in dallas last night?
Posted by Anonymous | September 30, 2010 3:38 PM
anyone have definitive set times for belle and sebastian, irregardless of rain?
Posted by Anonymous | September 30, 2010 3:41 PM
3:35 and others, we don't mind the rain, we mind getting there from all over just for show being called off after 5 songs.
if you haven't been at waterfront yet, state police calls it off with the first lightning. get it?
Posted by me | September 30, 2010 3:41 PM
It says rain-or-shine, not you-might-get-struck-by-lightning-or-shine.
Posted by Anonymous | September 30, 2010 3:43 PM
if the band gets struck by lightening it will be the end of shitty music
Posted by Anonymous | September 30, 2010 3:46 PM
i saw dave matthews in high school at the meadowlands and there was a torrential downpour during his encore and you were literally soaked through your clothes within 30 seconds of it starting to rain but dave just kept playing two step and everyone was going nuts and then lightning struck the stadium and all the lights went out but there was no effect on the music and dave just kept playing and it was awesome
Posted by Anonymous | September 30, 2010 3:47 PM
When that happened with Modest Mouse, it was rescheduled, yes? So what's the harm? If you go and it doesn't get called, awesome, that means no lightning and you saw the show! If you go and it does get called, then you'll probably get the reschedule you wanted in the first place! So all you lose out on is a little bit of time and dryness, which is not so weird for an outdoor rain-or-shine show.
I really don't understand what the complaints are here. That they're not pre-emptively calling the show? That you might have to leave your house because the show you bought tickets to MIGHT happen if it's not horribly unsafe?
Look I'll be crazy disappointed if it gets called after ten minutes, too. But that possibility exists for all kinds of outdoor shows. It sounds like everyone is whining about being inconvenienced by weather but trying to couch it in "someone is putting me in danger!!"

That said, if there's a lot of dicking around before and after Teenage Fanclub and B&S doesn't take the stage as quickly as possible, that will be kinda sucky, since it looks like we might have a decent window of non-stormy weather.

Not everyone lives in Williamsburg. If you spend time to get there and the show gets canceled, it'll be a big disappointment and waste of time/money for a lot of people.
The biggest mistake was for AEG to book a show by a band, who hasn't played in years, at an outdoor venue. There are a lot of people travelling for this show and they are the ones who could get screwed the worst. It was also stupid from AEG's perspective because in the chance it gets canceled they will lose a lot of money. In fact they already lost because a lot of people in NYC buy tickets day-of or a few days before the show. I'm sure they did not sell many tickets in the last couple of days because of the projected weather.

Posted by Anonymous | September 30, 2010 4:23 PM
This band is not exactly a reuniting Pavement. They're playing a bunch of shows this month with a bunch more likely to follow within a year or so. It's not really AEG's fault that people's travel plans might get messed about. If they reschedule, just as many people might not be able to go on the new date. Sucks but it's life.
Fuck AEG for lots of reasons, but not for booking an outdoor show in the fall.

why did b&s claim they'd be going on "a half hour early" by going on at 8? all waterfront headliners go on at 8. with the 10pm curfew, had they started at 8:30, they wouldn't have made it through their setlist.

For the record, the B&S show was amazing -- it wasn't like the just 'played the hits', but I think they did a good job of hitting songs that longtime and hardcore fans would like. Yeah, their most recent stuff has been hit or miss but the new songs are great, and sounded good tonight.
The weather turned out to be just fine, and the haze over Manhattan looked gorgeous. Sorry you all spent so much of your time spinning your wheels and bitching.

Yes. The B&S show was dry and utterly captivating. They put on a hell of a show and everyone forgot about weather problems after about two songs. It was a great show.

Warm, gorgeous, no rain. The comments about where it should be
pre-emptively moved must be from competing venues/other promoters. Thanks B&S, OSA, Parks, for letting the music play on.

The show was great. I would not have missed this for the world. As long as the show was not canceled I was going to go even if the sky was falling. That does not mean people didn't have the right to voice their concerns. We all got lucky today, but jackasses like 10:18 who are so full of hate for others will ultimately always be fucking losers.
