"apparently there was a secret Yeah Yeah Yeahs show tonight in Brooklyn.
If you went, I hate you" - Matty Aye

Yeah Yeah Yeahs played about an hour, starting around 10:40pm, on Wednesday night at Monster Island to the select few who were able to land themselves a ticket. It was hot and sweaty (the fans didn't help) and people were going nuts. As advertised, the band stuck to mostly older and more obscure material (though they did play the-always-crowd-pleasing "Maps") in celebration of their 10th anniversary as a band playing shows in NYC.

Leia Jospe was one of those who got a ticket to the Todd P-presented show. She left her camera at home, but managed to get a few snaps on her phone. Those, along with a shot of the setlist sent in by special agent PP, below...

The Yeah Yeah Yeahs played another small show, but for fashion week and in Manhattan (at Don Hill's) a drop over a week earlier.

I was there! My roommate got hit in the face by a small girl with glasses... who is a cunt.

So sweaty and so fun tonight. Nick was shredding and Brian was ecstatic.

I saw that girl who hit your roommate. She seemed so nice at first... kinda like Janeane Garofalo's shorter, fatter sister. Also, great show!

i photocopied a real ticket and got in.

YES! That little cunt was RIDICULOUS. That was her. I passed out a little bit because of her. Missed everything after No, No, No until about Y Control. Super hot in there, but WAY WAY fun. More bands should do this.

Posted by The Roommate | September 23, 2010 1:59 AM

most overrated band in the business. same shit that gets lady gaga by- fashion.

I met the glasses'd cunt too. What a stupid little fat bitch. THOUGH because of her I talked to a hot lesbian. Hey hot lesbian where are you?

Very Very true. That's when Brooklyn with the self important transplants from surrounding states created this pathetic fashion play by numbers indie music based on a scene in the burg.

-not sure what the problem is with bands using fashion as a conduit to self-expression, which is something that is and has always been. not sure if you have checked out their guitar player, either, who creates noise that sounds like something that came from an airplane hanger. So what if you're dressed nice while doing that?

Posted by Anonymous | September 23, 2010 7:14 AM

Yeah Anon1:59...does every band have to dress like Real Estate or Titus Andronicus (i.e., no fashion sense) to pass your indie cred muster?

Posted by Anonymous | September 23, 2010 7:48 AM

You trying to tell me they didn't play "Bang"?!? That was the trademark track of their first EP and one of their most popular songs back in the formative period they're apparently trying to celebrate.

Posted by Anonymous | September 23, 2010 8:11 AM

No Our Time? That first EP is incredibly good. Our Time and Art Star are perhaps their two best songs. They should have skipped Maps.

Who was the bass player?

Posted by Anonymous | September 23, 2010 8:15 AM

who cares

Posted by Anonymous | September 23, 2010 8:51 AM

the real talent in the band is the drummer

Posted by Anonymous | September 23, 2010 8:55 AM

bass player = shahin motia from ex models and knyfe hyts

i agree, a few no intrusive photos are nice

compared to the regualr six dudes and dudettes with cameras ligjting everybody up ( not cool )

im still drunk

Posted by Anonymous | September 23, 2010 10:23 AM

awesome show. no male harmonies last night which was a nice change from most shows i've seen recently. karen o is extraordinary on stage (and i dont give a crap about fashion), which makes the guy who thinks the only talent is the drummer a tool

"i photocopied a real ticket and got in"

Too funny, me and 3 of my friends did the same thing. 2 girls had "real" tickets, and the 4 others of us made copies. Was nervous walking in, but it ended up being no problem.

Posted by Anonymous | September 23, 2010 10:48 AM

steve is a cunt

Posted by Anonymous | September 23, 2010 10:56 AM

good call on the photocopied tickets!

how about stories of people buying tickets out front for $10?

Posted by Anonymous | September 23, 2010 11:15 AM

It would have been worth it had they played "Shot Down".

Posted by Anonymous | September 23, 2010 11:46 AM

11:15 I photo copied a hamilton and bought a photocopied ticket with it...we both got burned!

i just think it's ridiculous that people can't wait to go to shows, talk all this shit and then when they get there, they are busy on their phones taking pictures, searching, etc... LOSERS. ENJOY THE SHOW. BE IN THE MOMENT

Posted by Anonymous | September 23, 2010 11:56 AM

they are busy twittering their facebook updates.

Posted by Anonymous | September 23, 2010 12:04 PM

I DO! was thinking the same thing last night, instead of enjoying the actual thing lets at it look through a fucking Iphone all night...douchebags! As for all the fake ass hipster music critcs, As someone who grew up in Queens there wholoe life, and has about 20 years of shows under there belt you dont have a fucking clue. Karen O is one of the greatest frontmen of those last 20 that I have seen second only to Iggy and david yow

Posted by Anonymous | September 23, 2010 12:04 PM

Real Estate? I saw that band open for Deerhunter and was so effing bored. It was the most straightforward normal (lite) rock I've heard in a LONG time--no edge, no urgency, no nothing that paid off for the listener. I told my friend, "This is a great band to take naps too" and that's not a compliment.

Posted by Regular reader | September 23, 2010 12:11 PM

Hey Queens boy, it's "their" not "there".

I once used an airplane hanger to hang my Hollister hoodie in the crew's special closet where they put their uniforms. How nice of them to let me do that!

Posted by Anonymous | September 23, 2010 12:37 PM

Real Estate is chillwave, dude, you can't go to see them expecting Les Savy Fav or something.

Posted by Anonymous | September 23, 2010 12:39 PM

The Yeah Yeah Yeahs didn't actually play Monster Island, which is a basement venue with an entrance on Kent. This show was at Secret Project Robot, the upstairs venue and the entrance was on Metropolitan.

Posted by Anonymous | September 23, 2010 12:41 PM

have you douchebags really ran out of shit to complain about; so much so that you have to bitch about people taking pictures at shows?

i mean, unless said photog is obstructing your view(which is easy enough to solve...move the fuck in front of them), how does it ruin the show for anyone?

i swear you fucking whiners deserve this recession. move the fuck back home to your parents basement and get the reality check you so obviously need.

Posted by Anonymous | September 23, 2010 1:34 PM

so you can't enjoy the show and snap a photo at the same time?

why do people feel
they need to criticize if someone wants to take a photo?

i guess thats the "cool" thing to do...
losers

Posted by Anonymous | September 23, 2010 1:44 PM

Posted by steve | September 23, 2010 5:45 PM

these people dont like the photographers getting in the way of them filming the show with their iphones. their hd you know. let iphone users go up front.

Posted by Franklin Teardrop | September 23, 2010 11:47 PM

Amen 11:47. This YYY's band is notoriously into themselves and thats the me me brat trust fund generation in the burg.
Theres hundreds of bands way before nick zdumbass who can make guitar sounds that are original and "wacky" but they are much more humble.

Why did NASA send a titanium copy of the latest Yeah Yeah Yeah's album to every planet in our solar system?
Well, to kill off any interest that the aliens may have had in invading earth.

But thaaaaaaaat's my life.

Posted by nu wave hamburger | September 24, 2010 2:17 AM

What do you get when you cross the latest album by Yeah Yeah Yeahs with a boomerang?
A shitty album you can't get rid of.

At a certain point I started wondering if Crary was really into the “No Wave” music at all and was really just a fan of the modern bands and trying to get them screen time. Karen O of the Yeah Yeah Yeahs is interviewed in the film so much it seems like she’s in there just as a calculated move to sell the film since she’s the only real “name” in the movie.
But if Crary cut out all of her “Like, you know”s the movie would probably be about 20 minutes shorter.

And the other bands years before them are much better also. Lydia Lunch, Bush Tetras, Foetus, Swans and Live Skull?

Wonderful post and the location is beautiful and elegant in design and information and everything>>> to Favorites
Amazing is an enormous understatement. One of the best electronic shows I've ever been to and I've seen well over a thousand concerts. I had no idea Vladislav Delay was as good a drummer & percussionist as he is- fabulous and he kept everything swinging with a very unique style of playing. If you missed this you missed out big time...
