Deerhoof

"Drummer/mastermind Greg Saunier -- in purple pants and bright green sneakers -- bashed at his tiny drum kit as though he were swatting bees (whether there was a song in progress or not), and vocalist/bassist Satomi Matsuzaki busted out callisthenic dance moves between her polyglot chirps. Guitarists John Dieterich and Ed Rodriguez were appropriately centered, braiding jagged melodies together in errant knots that ultimately held each song tight." [Boston.com]
Deerhoof play Le Poisson Rouge TONIGHT (10/13) with Father Murphy and TALIBAM!. The NYC show is the close of a larger tour that was mostly with Xiu Xiu. Deerhoof's only remaining show after tonight at ATP's Nightmare Before Christmas in Minehead, UK (with Godspeed You Black Emperor!, Throbbing Gristle, Neurosis, and others). Tickets to the LPR show are still available. ATP in Minehead is sold out.

Da 'hoof currently has two releases on deck for the coming months. The first is the Deerhoof/Physical Forms - Hoofdriver split 7" due on 11/6, which features Busdriver singing over a Deerhoof instrumental while the flip features him backed by members of The Mae Shi as Physical Forms. Preorder that split and check out "On The Brink" by Physical Forms above.

Deerhoof will also release their new album Deerhoof vs. Evil on January 25th! The new record will see release on LP/CD (preorder via Polyvinyl) and limited cassette (500 copies with digital download on Joyful Noise) formats. Dig on "The Merry Barracks" above.

Most dates Deerhoof played in October have been with Father Murphy and Xiu Xiu, one of which was at the Paramount Theatre in Boston on October 10th.

"If you're wondering how the sound is at the restored Paramount Theatre: It's amazing. You hear everything. During Sunday evening's inaugural rock show for the theater, when I went to jot down a line from Xiu Xiu's Jamie Stewart -- "thinking of her dream makes her feel like it's stupid,'' from "Dr. Troll'' -- the click of my pen echoed like I'd dropped a phonebook." [Boston.com]
Pictures from that show adorn this post.

Xiu Xiu and Deerhoof played their last show together last night, 10/12, at Daniel Street in Connecticut, and though Xiu Xiu does not play the NY show tonight, Xiu Xiu will play their own show at Maxwell's in Hoboken on Friday (10/15), and many other dates after that. Tickets for Maxwell's are still available.

Xiu Xiu played NYC in late September with the great Merzbow. Xiu Xiu played NYC with Deerhoof in July.

Posted by Anonymous | October 13, 2010 11:19 AM

anyone know what time deerhoof's set is tonight? i wanna try to get there after work tonight.

Posted by Anonymous | October 13, 2010 11:33 AM

^ i'd imagine 11pm

Posted by Anonymous | October 13, 2010 11:40 AM

Love Deerhoof's music, but their "singer" is utter garbage.

Posted by Anonymous | October 13, 2010 11:56 AM

Talibam! First at 9pm. Rippin

Posted by Anonymous | October 13, 2010 12:14 PM

11:56, perhaps you need your head examined. not to downplay her vocal abilities or lyrics (of which they are both unique and amazing) but she also plays bass (and occasionally guitar) and writes their music in collaboration with the rest of the band.

Posted by Anonymous | October 13, 2010 12:19 PM

how can you "love" their music, yet hate the "singer"? idiot.

Posted by Anonymous | October 13, 2010 12:26 PM

It's like Rush, if you can get Geddy to stop singing, they would be a great band. The chick from Deerhoof can't sing. I guess that makes Deefhoof the Rush of indie-rock.

Posted by Anonymous | October 13, 2010 12:48 PM

a) if you like rush but not geddy, you are clearly an idiot
b) if you like deerhoof but not satomi, you are clearly an idiot

Posted by Anonymous | October 13, 2010 12:52 PM

very overated band(s)

Posted by Anonymous | October 13, 2010 1:07 PM

deerhoof is overrated if have zero taste in music

Posted by Anonymous | October 13, 2010 1:12 PM

If you don't like Deerhoof- fine. Please shut up though... no need to comment here.

Posted by Anonymous | October 13, 2010 1:47 PM

you gotta admit, satomi cant sing

Posted by Anonymous | October 13, 2010 2:09 PM

I would just like to add that I too do not care for this band. There are some bands that I like, but this band is not one of them. I feel strongly that my comments about how I don't care for this particular band will illuminate the discussion taking place here.

finally, new record. "i did crimes for you" was great at the last LPR show... which wasn't 21+ *cries*

*to mommy*

Posted by Anonymous | October 13, 2010 2:53 PM

amazing amazing amazing live band. so much fun. awesome musicianship. so bummed to be missing their nyc show tonight. comments about satomi's vocal prowess crack me up. and the guy who doesn't like geddy lee's vocals... ha. oh well, too bad for the haters that you can't enjoy this stuff. more for the rest of us.

excellent photographs, too!

Posted by eric | October 13, 2010 3:27 PM

bob dylan can't sing either

Posted by Anonymous | October 13, 2010 3:55 PM

david yow can't swim

Posted by Anonymous | October 13, 2010 4:32 PM

Bob Dylan can swim when he's not on oxygen. (I jest :)

Posted by Anonymous | October 13, 2010 4:42 PM

i don't like this band

Posted by Anonymous | October 13, 2010 4:45 PM

i do. a massive amount of people do actually, in the world. i bet you'd be able to find a decent amount of people who would murder an irritable anonymous BV commenter to save the life of a deerhoof song.

Posted by Anonymous | October 13, 2010 6:24 PM

That's a beautiful dog.

Posted by Anonymous | October 14, 2010 2:45 AM

@ 6:24 I would pro and/or retroactively abort the child of an irritable anonymous BV commenter to save the life of 1/4 of a Deerhoof song. Because the world needs these songs waay more than it does the cum product of some suburbanite hipster wanna be. lol

deerhoof was ridiculously good at LPR last night. serious contender for greatest current band. if you're not into them you are sorely missing out on music in general

Posted by Anonymous | October 14, 2010 9:36 AM

I discovered a new band by reading an interview on another website, they're called "Jarema". Maybe you could get to interview them for your website.

9:36, you do realize that a comment like "you are sorely missing out on music in general" is not going to turn anyone on to anything ever, right?

Posted by Anonymous | October 14, 2010 11:58 AM

like deerhoof music, but lead singer theatrics are too overly kawaii. turned off.

Posted by annie momus | October 15, 2010 9:48 AM
