Die Antwoord @ MHOW - July 25, 2010
Die Antwoord

Last time Die Antwoord came to town was in July. They opened for MIA at one big show (HARD FEST), and headlined one of their own (MHOW). When I heard that they just added a last minute October 29th show at Gramercy Theatre in NYC (ON SALE NOW), I assumed they were doing the same since I knew they were scheduled to open one of Deadmau5's three shows at Roseland Ballroom this week, BUT it's actually a venue change. Die Antwoord are no longer opening at Roseland "due to production needs". That's good news for non-Deadmau5 fans since now Die Antwoord's one and only show is as a headliner. They are also the only band playing Gramercy Theatre Friday night (no opener of their own)

Want to go (it's this Friday!)? I have THREE PAIRS of tickets to giveaway. Details on how to win them at the bottom of this post.

What are the pictures in this post? They are an unpublshed set from the Music Hall show that I've been saving for a special occasion like this, and you can see the rest of them, along with video from their recent appearance on Kimmel, their new NSFW video for "Evil Boy", and all dates, below...

Yo Landi is strangely hot - I just hate the haircut and the fetal-alcohol-syndrome/malnutrition look on/of her face.

Posted by Anonymous | October 27, 2010 5:45 PM

5:45

hence: the strangely

Posted by Anonymous | October 27, 2010 5:49 PM

It's because Yo Landi bleaches her eyebrows that she looks so alien. I think she would look less malnourished with darker brows.

Posted by Anonymous | October 27, 2010 6:29 PM

Look at her face fifth up from the bottom...the one with her hood up. She actually has a beautiful face when not contorted.

But yeah, she's fit as hell.

Posted by Anonymous | October 27, 2010 6:31 PM

I have so much love for all of the audience members I met that night! Hope to see you all again on the 29th!

Posted by lori | October 27, 2010 6:41 PM

So I've put off listening to them for the longest time but this post put me over the edge and I finally had to give them a listen... So, are you people fuckin serious? Like is this just a big joke? "Go Ninja"? Really?

Posted by Anonymous | October 27, 2010 7:00 PM

LOL!

Posted by Anonymous | October 27, 2010 7:15 PM

I've been shooting for BV for a good amount of years now, and I respect BV so much for the love he has for music and for the service he is providing to the music community here. Given the fact that this is *the* New York City music blog most people recognize immediately (other music sites get more hits but less notoriety) that has an active group of commenters, couldn't everyone who is compelled to comment make a secret vow in their hearts to spread a little intelligent discourse amongst their hummus, "I would hit that", Meh comments?

I know, I'm suddenly taking the high road instead of calling the people who are dissecting Yo-Landi's looks assholes. Chalk it up to my remembrance of this show being unusually exuberant and fun, not like the typical "New York" experience.

So what do you say, folks? One comment about the music or the state of any given music scene in the New York area for every nonsense hummus/Id hit it/Meh post? No one will ever know, you *are* anonymous...

Posted by Lori | October 27, 2010 7:17 PM

wow, lori - buzzkill... way harshing my meh-llow.

Posted by Anonymous | October 27, 2010 7:24 PM

Lori... I find the hummus comments to be extremely intelligent. Many quality recipes and locations are not low brow comments by any means!

Posted by Anonymous | October 27, 2010 7:33 PM

awesome

Posted by Anonymous | October 27, 2010 7:43 PM

Lori - I think the people who post anonymously represent like .01% of the community. Ever notice how when you see one of the bands/performers that everyone hates on the BV boards, everyone in the crowd seems to be having a great time? I've also never actually heard someone reference hummus at a show. These are just some stray observations.

p.s. great set of photos

Posted by chris gersbeck | October 27, 2010 7:45 PM

Crap, didn't mean to um, harsh anyone out! The intarwebz can be fun but they can also be a means to increase your knowledge and make a real community out of the many diverse elements of the NYC scene.

Hummus person, I will throw you a bone - I saw Thor from Shearwater/SWANS eating hummus at the SWANS Brooklyn Masonic Temple show. How do you think the hummus affected his performance?

Posted by lori | October 27, 2010 7:48 PM

she is wearing the exact gold leggings i need for my halloween costume

Posted by Anonymous | October 27, 2010 8:01 PM

Lori... I appreciate you inquiring about how you feel about how the hummus may have affected the swans at the Brooklyn Masonic temple...
Here is my intelligent breakdown:

As has been previosly discussed, the phyto-nutrients locked within the chickpea have been well documented to increase agility and stamina for rock and roll dancemoves such as the hip thrust. I feel that the swans did indeed showcase some positive signs of ingesting hummus backstage prior to their performance. The drummer seems to have had the largest portion, for his energy was truly incredible and the highlight of the show for me.

Posted by Anonymous | October 27, 2010 8:03 PM

i wish that they would go away.

Posted by Anonymous | October 27, 2010 8:04 PM

any openers for friday? I'm assuming Rye Rye won't be there?

Posted by Anonymous | October 27, 2010 8:04 PM

too bad i think they suck so i cant just go as her

Posted by Anonymous | October 27, 2010 8:04 PM

These guys have been riding this novelty wave for a long time now, what's the deal? Is this gonna be one of those things where the joke becomes a real career (see also: Girl Talk, Das Racist)? I hate that shit.

Posted by Anonymous | October 27, 2010 8:26 PM

Hey BV, I do wish you had to log in to post comments here, it would cut down on the stupid comments, but I know that there would be Logins like Hummus4Ever posting hummus comments, and whatnot, but it would probably cut down the assholery to some degree.

Posted by A Non A Mouse | October 27, 2010 8:36 PM

Yo Landi and Vanilla Ice need to eat some vegetables.

Posted by Anonymous | October 27, 2010 8:38 PM

BV is one of the few popular blogs that still allows completely anonymous comments. Maybe Vice as well, and they are also plagued with nothing but hate and "I'd hit its," which, being Vice, they sort of encourage.

I assume 98% of readers here hate the hummus and meh bullshit. In fact, I mostly ignore the comments here nowadays because even the snark lacks wit. And I visit the site less, too, because of it.

The danger, though, is turning the comments section into something like the insular, self-celebrating nerd-fest that is the Videogum comments section. I stopped visiting that site altogether after a while, and I know I'm not alone. But if you want to improve the discourse around here, it's kind of your only choice.

Posted by Anonymous | October 27, 2010 9:44 PM

BV would never in a million years go for the login forum stuff. The site is built around "assholish" anonymous comments

Posted by Anonymous | October 27, 2010 9:50 PM

Die AntMEHd.

Posted by Anonymous | October 27, 2010 10:30 PM

9:44 - i visit this blog pretty much solely for the comments..very entertaining. give it a try.

Posted by Anonymous | October 27, 2010 10:32 PM

she has a fine piece of ass. why doesn't that other guy perform at their shows? is he only suppose to be some cruel image, if so, fuck these hacks. but serious, sweet ass.

Posted by Anonymous | October 27, 2010 10:36 PM

Pitchfork says it's cool so we all obey. Biggest practical joke of the year.

Posted by Anonymous | October 27, 2010 10:51 PM

Although its probably bullshit, DJ Hi-Tek is said to have an irrational fear of flying and has been out of South Africa very few times in his life.

I don't really care, though, Ninja and Yolandi still bring it live.

Posted by Anonymous | October 27, 2010 10:53 PM

I should have said "this chick?"

Posted by Anonymous | October 27, 2010 11:03 PM

What time is Hummus on?

Posted by Anonymous | October 27, 2010 11:12 PM

Posted by Anonymous | October 28, 2010 12:03 AM

Posted by Anonymous | October 28, 2010 12:25 AM

that is the hottest ugly chick I've ever seen.

Posted by Anonymous | October 28, 2010 12:34 AM

Hummus is not a laughing matter and was never intended to be funny.
It is serious business... Go prepare yourself a bowl and kick back.

Posted by Anonymous | October 28, 2010 1:03 AM

niggas like hummus?

Das Racist

Posted by Anonymous | October 28, 2010 4:22 AM

This sad trash "joke" walks a fine line with Insane clown posse whether or not you dont take this hipster vomit t shirt selling image posturing thing seriously. The couple with t-shirts, pretty twisted and $ sign with her gold shorts are ready for Oct 31st.

Oh I get it. It was a movie set making a mockumentary poking fun of the club kids in LES and the burg now.

Posted by Anonymous | October 28, 2010 6:02 AM

i'd hit MEHt

Posted by Anonymous | October 28, 2010 8:37 AM

JEFF the Brotherhood is opening for them in Nashville. Not a joke.

White fucking Trash ...Hmmm I wonder what Bone Thugs would think of the Mocking?

Posted by Anonymous | October 28, 2010 10:05 AM

Hey Lori -

You went to shoot Die Antwoord and now expect to see some intelligent comments? REALLY? Were you under impression this was a great assignment or you would change the world by taking some photos of this amazing band? I don't think you're in on the joke, Lori.

Bye and good luck,

A dedicated follower of New York City's finest music blog.

Posted by Anonymous | October 28, 2010 10:05 AM

sorry folks, but they clearly ain't "the answer"

Posted by donn | October 28, 2010 10:22 AM

I do think die antwood are just a gimmick (remember Matsiayhu?) but I agree with Lori. The hummus comments are clearly all from
one sad, lonely individual who visits the site everyday and comments on every post, the misogynist comments are everything indie rock and the 'alternative/underground/whatever' scene is supposed to be AGAINST, and the meh comments are just uninspired. It is amusing to see people trash a hipster novelty act (cough cough) when they deserve it, but we could stand to raise the bar a little people.

Posted by Holden | October 28, 2010 10:51 AM

The hummus comments are not from one person, but a multitude of people.
Some sort of hummus gang spreading tahini all over these message boards.

Posted by Anonymous | October 28, 2010 11:31 AM

the reason that i and everyone i know who reads this blog comes back to it time and again is for the comments - not the photos - so chill out, lori.

Posted by Anonymous | October 28, 2010 11:53 AM

this blog would be dead if not for the humus comments and mehs. DIE ANDWOORT PLAYED IN BROOKLYN YOU'RE SAYING?!?!?! OMG!!!! Who cares.

Posted by Anonymous | October 28, 2010 12:10 PM

"Pitchfork says it's cool so we all obey."

Pitchfork slammed their debut with a 5.5, actually.

Posted by Anonymous | October 28, 2010 12:50 PM

stop censoring comments. unfair. don't get all "corporate" on us bv because of some pissy die antwoord fans. if people are upset on the comment, they shouldn't read em. i expect this treatment from huffingtonpost, not bv. don't ride the censorwave bv, unchill, broskis.

Posted by Anonymous | October 28, 2010 12:54 PM

yeah bv is the pinnacle of online music journalism. and all its self-righteous commentors are the guardians of that legitimacy. stay classy, kids.

*giant dismissive wank*

no comments were censored. Sometimes comments get caught as spam (legitimate spam comments come in like every 10 seconds so it's a necessary evil), and sometimes I don't notice that for days or ever, but that didn't happen in this thread or to you.

Posted by brooklynvegan | October 28, 2010 3:48 PM

I'm pretty indifferent to these guys, "Enter the Ninja" is an slightly above average song. I heard a few people say that they're the 2010 version of Mindless Self Indulgence and I'd tend to agree with that statement. Whether that's a good or bad thing ...

Posted by Anonymous | October 28, 2010 3:56 PM

Hey 10:05, I don't mind your negativity today. I don't know what joke you think you're in on but I hope you enjoy it. Hope to see you at a fun show soon!

Posted by lori | October 28, 2010 4:01 PM

i've definitely seen comments on here that SHOULD be censored, but aren't. i really wouldn't worry about BV wasting his time monitoring the same misogynistic anon comments day in and day out, he's got much better things to do i'm sure.

Posted by Anonymous | October 28, 2010 4:07 PM
