Gorillaz

"If anyone tells you the Gorillaz show at MSG on Friday was anything less than incredible, they're lying to you. Some bands you wish to see in their earlier stages, but now is the time to see Gorillaz. They have never been better, and there's no guarantee they can top this. This is their prime time, and the brilliance of their collaborative musical geniuses was amplified in concert. Not only did we see Damon Albarn in flesh - a personal idol - but he was accompanied by the incredible artists that were featured on Plastic Beach: Mos Def, Lou Reed, Bobby Womack, De La Soul, Little Dragon, members of The Clash, etc. Co-creator of Gorillaz, visual man Jamie Hewlett also peeped out from backstage to say hello - to whom Damon planted a big ol' kiss. The entire show was almost too epic to be true... You know when all your favorite superheroes get together and form a league? That is what this was. And this 'league' leader, frontman Damon Albarn, was clearly having the time of his life. He was constantly dancing, jumping around, running around the stage, hugging people - never keeping still unless he was playing the piano. Reminded us of his good old Blur days, sigh. They played almost all of their latest album and included old time favorites like "Clint Eastwood" and "Feel Good Inc."" [morningafterpills]
After launching their tour in Boston, Gorillaz and N.E.R.D. played the giant NYC room that is Madison Square Garden on Friday night (10/8). As the quote above points out, there were many special guests in the house, some of whom are on the whole tour and some who just stopped by for the New York show (like Jay-Z though he was just there to watch).

More pictures, some videos and the full show setlist, below...

Really, really amazing show, despite the occasional cavernous sound problems at MSG. The only awkward part was when they trotted Lou Reed out... took too long to set his stuff up, and he sounded terrible and there was tons of feedback from his mic... really, though, the only sore spot in an otherwise great show.

miho hatori is cute as a button

Posted by Anonymous | October 11, 2010 12:20 AM

looks like lou reed had no idea what to sing if lyrics were not there.

Posted by Anonymous | October 11, 2010 12:51 AM

And some idiot haters was saying here that would be boring as hell...

Brilliant show, one of a kind!

- Agreed with 12:03 about Lou Reed!

Posted by Anonymous | October 11, 2010 12:54 AM

show of the year, just like all the other shows this year!

Posted by Anonymous | October 11, 2010 1:13 AM

wow lou reed way to butcher that song.

Posted by Anonymous | October 11, 2010 2:06 AM

Lou Reed should have been replaced by Susan Boyle.

Did Mos Def roll out any of his 9/11 conspiracy crap?

Posted by Anonymous | October 11, 2010 2:12 AM

Whoa. Just like being there without the incredible tedious experience.

Posted by CarefulPenis | October 11, 2010 4:31 AM

pick up your fucking pants, pharell

Posted by Anonymous | October 11, 2010 9:13 AM

Saw them at the apollo and that was 100 times better. Opening up with snoop signing on a video is lame... you're playing MS f'ing G, don't use a video of snoop, have him guest. and what was up with videos of watching planes get shot down and crash into the water during the encore? When I see a concert, I don't really feel like seeing videos about death.

^-- snoop is touring in japan, relax

I hate all those hyperbolic, conclusive "show of the year" statements... but let's just say this was MY personal favorite show of the year... so far at least.

Fun, fun times. And Gorillaz reminded me how awesome arena shows can be. I'd take this one Gorillaz MSG show over 50 boring shows at the Bowery any day of the year.

"I don't really feel like seeing videos about death."

unless it's about YOU...douchehaterbag!

Posted by Anonymous | October 11, 2010 11:05 AM

actually, the video during the encore of the planes crashing into water - in the beginning it was of planes getting shot down (thus death), but then it moved on to sailors/pilots pushing planes off the carriers to celebrate the end of war (thus not death)

All I can do now is remember the old days when Lou was at the top of his game. He now reminds me of Frank Sinatra's final performances which were incredibly sad.

Posted by Anonymous | October 11, 2010 11:15 AM

i agree that snoop video intro really sets the ground work for disappointment. if he can't show up then no biggie, who cares, but a long, cheesy video of him to open the show is not an exciting opening.

Posted by Anonymous | October 11, 2010 11:16 AM

@11:16 am - i suppose you also wanted Bruce Willis to be there live shooting guns at the band too?

Posted by Anonymous | October 11, 2010 11:36 AM

"I'd take this one Gorillaz MSG show over 50 boring shows at the Bowery any day of the year."

I'm with you on this one. Expensive concert but worth every dime.

LOU REED will always be 100 times cooler than any snivelling little hipster piece of shit on this website.

Posted by Anonymous | October 11, 2010 12:14 PM

Umm, where are all the shots of Mick Jones...and only two of Paul Simonon? These dudes are legends.

Posted by Anonymous | October 11, 2010 12:17 PM

BUBBA YAM loves LOU REED, hates MOS DEF and UNDERWEAR BOY.

Posted by Anonymous | October 11, 2010 12:21 PM

"...sailors/pilots pushing planes off the carriers to celebrate the end of war...?!!!"

You have NO IDEA what was actually happening when this occurred, do you, 11:13? Your ignorance is stunning ('though not surprising), and very, very, frightening.

If you didn't enjoy this show its because you weren't tripping and smoking blunts and pounding jack danielss on the second level. Gorillaz msg was a dream come true and my head still hurts from getting out of my mind friday

WELCOME TO THE WORLD OF THE PLASTIC BEACHHH!!!!!!!!

Missed this because I blew $50 on a conterfeit ticket I bought from some asshole outside MSG, and didn't have the $ to try again. I will remember him, his fucking black dice earrings, and his ugly fucking smirk that should have tipped me off. Really mad I missed this one, especially under those circumstances. My own fault though for waiting until 8pm to decide I wanted to go.

Posted by Funderburgh | October 12, 2010 9:29 PM

I wish I went, but too pricey for what they're worth

Posted by Anonymous | October 13, 2010 9:08 PM

Lou Reed will play with anyone these days. Huh?

Posted by Anonymous | October 13, 2010 9:08 PM

I wish I went... why was this show so expensive???

Posted by Anonymous | October 14, 2010 12:22 PM

So what did mick and Paul play on exactly? All that and no clash cover?

Posted by Anonymous | October 15, 2010 4:47 PM

They played the entire set.

Posted by Anonymous | October 15, 2010 8:38 PM

I would of liked to have seen this but for some reason MSG is just so mega huge and I do not want to see ants on a stage so I went to see Kronos Quartet instead.. It would of been cool to be at this show..thanks for sharing the photos.
