backstage @ the Atlanta show (seanstarwars)
Guided by Voices

I can't tell you how many times I asked people "when is Guided by Voices going to add a 2nd NYC show?" "Not going to happen" they always responded. Well, from one point of view they were right. It still didn't get added to the tour they announced almost four months ago. That's the same tour that hit Matador 21 and includes a single, sold out, November 7th NYC show at Terminal 5 (which also happens to be the final date of the tour).

However, a 2nd NYC show has been added! And it takes place almost 2 months later, December 31st, 2010 to be exact, at Irving Plaza ($72 ADV; $75 DOS, Tickets on sale Sat, Nov 6 @ 10AM).

The Roots, Sharon Jones, Patti Smith, Passion Pit, Phish, and Drive-By Truckers, and Gov't Mule are all also playing New Years Eve shows in the NYC-area.

Check out the 40 song setlist Guided by Voices played in Atlanta this past Saturday night, below...

nope, sorry gramps

Posted by Anonymous | October 28, 2010 1:20 AM

jesus $75... is passion pit opening or something?

Posted by Anonymous | October 28, 2010 1:20 AM

i think $75 is reasonable for a: the nature of this show b: it being new years eve in nyc and c: much better venue than their other show

Posted by Anonymous | October 28, 2010 1:36 AM

75 for a NYE show in NYC is surprisingly cheap.
Some bullish*t clubs charge $150 for hearing some whacked out DJ playing lady gaga remixes on NYE.

Posted by Anonymous | October 28, 2010 1:43 AM

I think $75 is reasonable for an: all you can eat hummus bar and a champagne toast (organic grapes)

Posted by Anonymous | October 28, 2010 5:45 AM

Saw them at Maxwell's, NYE 98-99. Was my first time seeing GBV and it was fucking awsome. The clips of their recent shows have been getting better and better. I just may have to try to get tickets for this show...

HI! Can anyone perhaps from The Filmore Warsaw Music Hall at Irving Plaza of New York or the promoter of this event confirm the open hummus bar rumored to be at this show?

Also, if confirmed, would you please be able to provide a list of what hummus toppings will be available to top my hummus with? I was wondering if there will just be basic items like tahini and olive oil, or will you have a more robust selection of options such as falafels, pine nuts, and olives?

My last question pertains to the tahini that will be available at this event. Do you know if the tahini provided will be vegan friendly, or should I bring some of my own from home? I realize traditional tahini doesn't have dairy, but it seems like some restaurants are starting to serve up a "yogurt tahini" and this has raised a red flag for all open hummus-bar events that I attend (I check myopenhummusbar.com daily!)

Finally, I have a small suggestion that I haven't heard mentioned at all, and I'd like to throw it out there. Would there be any way possible at midnight to do a new years hummus toast?

I anticipate your reply!

start with the later studio stuff, so that when you can't figure out what all the hype was about, you can go back and listen to propellor, bee thousand and alien lanes.

Bobby, I'd start with Bee Thousand and Alien lanes.

Posted by A serious comment | October 28, 2010 10:01 AM

I'm probably going to go just to say I went. I won't know any of the songs but I'll bob my head and tell random strangers what a fan I am of the early stuff and that I can't get into the lead singer's solo stuff. I'll probably also buy two tickets and then won't find anyone to go with me so I'll sell my extra on craigslist and weed out the eager dudes until some random chick emails me. After I check her facebook page to see if she is interesting enough I'll sell it to her for face just to feel like a good guy. Happy New Year indeed.

Posted by anonymous2 | October 28, 2010 10:08 AM

^ this would be funny if not for the fact that pretty much all GBV is the "lead singer"'s solo stuff

Gold Star For 9:34!

Posted by Anonymous | October 28, 2010 12:49 PM

Kinda sucks that the under-21 crowd gets slammed with the Terminal Shit show.

Posted by Anonymous | October 28, 2010 12:51 PM

Well, Bob did say once that the last GBV show would be in NYC. It looked like he reneged on that when they had the "last show" in Chicago, but since that's now obviously not the case this could be.....

Posted by Anonymous | October 28, 2010 1:03 PM

Tix still available 2 hours into the presale...maybe they were a bit optimistic? Could be in for a Pavement-style fire sale night of.

Posted by Anonymous | October 28, 2010 1:06 PM

doubt it... who's gonna risk standing out in the cold for possibly getting into see GBV on NYE?

Posted by Anonymous | October 28, 2010 1:23 PM

tickets no longer available...

Try again next semester

Posted by Anonymous | October 28, 2010 1:27 PM

I agree with "A Serious Comment" for Bobby--Bee Thousand & Alien Lanes are definitely the places to begin.

Posted by Anonymous | October 28, 2010 1:28 PM

wasn't able to get any in the presale, but I did buy a bunch of coat-check vouchers

Posted by Anonymous | October 28, 2010 1:28 PM

I hate NYE shows. NYE is a time for dates and other such thangs.

Posted by Anonymous | October 28, 2010 1:28 PM

@ 1:27... look, I post as many hummus comments as the next guy, so I don't appreciate the criticism. i was trying to take a different approach and it clearly didn't end up that funny. there are enough people on this site against hummus, so why lash out at one of your own?? well, off to mamoun's!

Posted by Anonymous | October 28, 2010 1:40 PM

If I ever find out who 9:34 is, I'm going to break his pelvis. A jackass and NOT a friend of the band. Asshole.

Posted by 9:34 Is A Jackass | October 28, 2010 1:48 PM

what was the presale from anyway? fanclub or something?

Posted by Anonymous | October 28, 2010 1:52 PM

Oh shit the Dayton Mafia is rolling on BV

Posted by Anonymous | October 28, 2010 1:53 PM

hmm... i didn't get tickets, but that's pretty effed up if 9:34 spoiled it for a bunch of people it was initially intended for.

Posted by Anonymous | October 28, 2010 2:04 PM

please explain exactly why 9:34 did something wrong? there are longtime fans of guided by voices that are no longer on gbv mailing lists that read brooklyn vegan. these people, myself included, would not be able to get the presale tickets without his or her information.

i've listened to them since '94. yes, i'm old. and i wouldn't have gotten advance tickets without 9:34's help.

people that are complaining need to find something *real* to be angry about. getting this worked up over a simple message board post is ridiculous, even by anonymous BV comment poster standards.

Posted by Anonymous | October 28, 2010 2:06 PM

1:48 - What? Did you start the Postal Blowfish list? Who are you, Pete Jamison?

Babies, babies, babies. just cool out, alright? Way to go, 9:34! If you're a fan, there was plenty of time to get tix on the pre-sale and plenty more on the on-sale date.

Openers conjecture?

Posted by Anonymous | October 28, 2010 2:07 PM

Rich T?

Posted by Anonymous | October 28, 2010 2:14 PM

hahaha rich t. is a nice and levelheaded guy. he would not post a tirade like 1:48.

Posted by Anonymous | October 28, 2010 2:32 PM

Ok, people defending the jerk who gave out the password for the Fan presale shouldn't be so hypocriticl. If you were the fan shut out of the show because of him you would see things differently. Bands do these kinds of things (presales) for their loyal fans who deserve that "privilege". Someone giving away the password goes against the whole purpose and of course the people who got the ticket ahead thanks to him will say he rocks and way to go, when in fact he is just someone looking to be the most popular guy around for giving some jerks he doesn't even know the advance tickets.

Posted by You | October 28, 2010 2:52 PM

so the fans that read brooklyn vegan should be discounted why, exactly?

Posted by Anonymous | October 28, 2010 2:58 PM

Nah yo

D-P is opening

Posted by Anonymous | October 28, 2010 3:11 PM

my point: give priority to the fans who got the presale password thru the band or their fanclub or whatver, not just anybody out there. the password-giveaway guy is an asshole any way you slice it.

Posted by You | October 28, 2010 3:19 PM

postal blowfish, strong lions, etc. all bombard you with so much information, even in digest form, that it's a headache to even bother deleting them all, one-by-one let alone read them.

anyone that does not feel a need to pore over or pontificate ever last detail about the band or pollard probably has not subscribed in quite a long time.

there are "true fans" and "die-hards" everywhere, not just on those lists, and those people should not be penalized for not subscribing to them.

that's why i am happy about the person that shared the password, and why i think your argument is weak.

and yes, i have the day off and have nothing better to do today except exercise, and that gets tiresome.

Posted by Anonymous | October 28, 2010 3:37 PM

The presale info was also mailed out on Bob's e-mailout from Manage This!, who e-mail once in a blue moon...so people on that should also lose out 'cos someone couldn't deal with the band saying "Don't post this elsewhere"?

Posted by Anonymous | October 28, 2010 4:01 PM

gbv has too many email lists, none of which i am a part of. when i first saw someone was upset about disclosing the presale password, i had assumed it was something given out to friends and family only, and then some douche took advantage of it.

bottom line... let the gbv fans get their presale tickets... who cares how they obtain the password?

Posted by Anonymous | October 28, 2010 4:18 PM

didn't you guys see gbv open for pavement at roseland in 94? jeez..."

Actually, yes...w/David Kilgour opening.

Posted by Wallis | October 28, 2010 4:27 PM

How do you quantify fandom?

I've been listening since 2000. Not the longest time, but am I less of a fan because I heard of them later than some people?

And I don't subscribe to lists. Ever. They are a nuisance more than anything.

I consider myself a huge fan because when I got introduced to them I fell into their catalogue full force and haven't looked back. As far as I'm concerned 9:34 did fans like me who don't bother with lists/groups/etc a huge service.

To the people bitching, you can buy my ticket for $150. Surely, if you're such a huge fan, a mark up like that shouldn't deter you right?

Posted by Anonymous | October 28, 2010 4:44 PM

everyone grab a bowl of hummus and chill the FUCK out

Posted by Anonymous | October 28, 2010 4:44 PM

Will I have to show my Monument Club ID when I pick up my tickets at Will Call?

Posted by Anonymous | October 28, 2010 5:08 PM

I heard on Pitchfork that in order to get tickets you need to purchase at least 5 test pressing collages from Bob on Ebay? Can someone please confirm or deny this?

Posted by Anonymous | October 28, 2010 5:11 PM

Is there a discount if you've attended all four Heedfests?

Posted by Anonymous | October 28, 2010 5:14 PM

I managed to snag four tickets that I will be posting on Craigslist tomorrow at 3 times face value. I will only be selling these tickets to casual fans.

Posted by Anonymous | October 28, 2010 5:21 PM

you guys are fighting over $85 tickets. are you nuts?

Posted by Anonymous | October 28, 2010 5:24 PM

They were $85. I will be selling mine tomorrow for $250 a pop. Again, casual fans only. Even better if you've never heard of the band and are only looking for something buzzworthy to do on new years.

Posted by Anonymous | October 28, 2010 5:28 PM

Fuck Heedfest.

Posted by Anonymous | October 28, 2010 5:51 PM

12:51--Under-21s have their whole lives ahead of them to go to good venues.

1:40--A real hummus commenter would 1) not reveal himself as someone who posts hummus comments, and 2) would not engage with someone about it like an overeager freshman.

Posted by Anonymous | October 28, 2010 6:08 PM
