Santos Party House - 10/28/2010 (picturs via the Village Voice)

As I was saying last night, Santos Party House was suddenly shut down right before the Ninja Tune party last night, forcing it to move to BLVD. One person who was there wrote, "Santos can get crowded, but BLVD was just insanely packed. The sound was ear-splittingly bad and the drinks crazy expensive. And STILL we had a great time."

This morning the Village Voice posted the above pictures which give some explanation (from the government's point of view) of what went down...

"(The notice alleges: "Criminal sale or possession of controlled substances, marihuana, or for any other violation of Articles 220 and/or 221 of New York State Penal Law." Articles 220 and 221 set criminal penalties for possession or sale of, yup, marijuana.) A promoter-affiliated door person we spoke with said that she had just arrived at Santos to set up for the party when the police came to shut the venue down. They were told they had to leave because no one was allowed in the building."
Sounds like they are just out to get Santos for whatever reason. Historically club crackdowns always come in waves, so it could be more than a coincidence that Coco66 was also shut down the same week, though they are kind of far apart and in different boroughs and were shut for different reasons (Coco66 was capacity-related or something). Paladino is to blame! Just kidding.

Now just waiting for the national headlines: "party rocker Andrew WK's nightclub alleged drug den".

Stay tuned for more info, but don't count on any of their listed events scheduled for this weekend happening (at Santos anyway), Voluptuous Horror of Karen Black Halloween show included.

See with a name like "..Party House" what do you expect? How about Santo's Quiet Space, or "Shhhhhh! We're a library"

i was playing a show in the basement of lucky chengs and it got raided by the cops and shut down. they said there was a complaint of someone selling drugs, turns out it was just someone who was pissed at the club and called it in. they found nothing

Hey NYPD and Supreme Court! It's about time to shut down Bowery Ballroom, Mercury Lounge and Terminal5. Or are they paying your sorry asses to well? You fucking cunts.

Posted by Anonymous | October 29, 2010 11:41 AM

Posted by Anonymous | October 29, 2010 11:42 AM

the bartenders there are absolute pieces of shit. I spent 10 minutes trying to get some retarded girls attention, meanwhile she's jumping on her co-workers back the whole time looking like an idiot. Good riddance.

YOU HAVE MORE IMPORTANT THINGS TO DO, NYPD

Posted by Anonymous | October 29, 2010 12:01 PM

tried to get into the asobi/seven bells show on saturday with a CMJ badge. it was like 10pm, and they had a line for ticketholders/guest list/will call that they made wait outside for at least an hour. someone explain to me how ticketholders are not allowed into the show they paid for? can't say i'm upset hearing this venue closed down after that nonsense.

Shutting down clubs in NYC in a not so great economy is not good. My guess is you could find something not so legal in 100% of the clubs almost every night. Move on. They aren't a drug den even though they have the words party house in their name. They are legit.

Posted by Anonymous | October 29, 2010 12:06 PM

absolutely right 12:06 but if the words "party house" appear in the name of your venue you basically painted a target on your front door.

Posted by Anonymous | October 29, 2010 12:14 PM

shitty club. shitty drink prices. shitty staff attitudes. even the name of the place is shitty.

good riddance.

Posted by mk | October 29, 2010 12:16 PM

This is not over BTW. Expect more raids and club closings this weekend.

Posted by Anonymous | October 29, 2010 12:16 PM

There's been a rash of party shutdowns recently.
I wonder how alot of the halloween warehouse parties will fare this weekend.

Hugs not drugs.

Posted by Sober Sam | October 29, 2010 12:43 PM

if the authorities are such, ahem, authorities then how come they can't even spell marijuana properly? Also like to add that you'll notice that none of the Live Nation venues will get targeted, just the small indie clubs...maybe it's Live Nation, or even Bowery, calling in false reports to their competitors.

Posted by Anonymous | October 29, 2010 12:55 PM

Hugs are overrated. Drugs are the truth!

Posted by Anonymous | October 29, 2010 1:32 PM

12:05 You do realize that when you have tickets to a sold out show, someone needs to check it, right? If people only come at set times to see their fav bands it bottlenecks. How do they give badges to people who don't go to shows?

Posted by Anonymous | October 29, 2010 2:16 PM

I bet Bowery Presents is behind them getting raided, i heard Bowery Ballroom lost a bunch of concerts to Santos Party House and were pissed.

Posted by Anonymous | October 29, 2010 2:29 PM

fuck all doormen and bartenders. fucking scum!

Posted by Anonymous | October 29, 2010 2:29 PM

Posted by Anonymous | October 29, 2010 3:36 PM

BS! Note to NYPD: People who smoke pot and buy/sell pot are going to do it wherever they are, and whenever they want. If it happens at Santos, it happens at any other venue in NYC. Any club or concert will have people smoking pot, there are bigger problems in NYC, like teenagers using and dealing heroin in high schools. Why dont you shut down all NYC schools for them being a accomplice in heroin dealing.

Posted by E-Rawk | October 29, 2010 3:40 PM

they sold pot there?
\
cool

Posted by Anonymous | October 29, 2010 3:58 PM

What about those douchey nightclubs where those Wall Street types hang out at? The NYPD would have a fiesta raiding those coke dens.

Posted by Anonymous | October 29, 2010 4:17 PM

Love got shut down too

Posted by Anonymous | October 29, 2010 4:19 PM

Cops raided Love two weeks ago and it's also shutdown. More in tune with Santos' programming. Is Giuliani back in office?

Posted by Anonymous | October 29, 2010 4:20 PM

naming your venue "Santos Party House" is just asking for meathead cops to shut it down. It's that simple. The cops have no clue what's going on, but they notice things like this.

Posted by Anonymous | October 29, 2010 4:40 PM

When are you people goign to learn we live under fascism now, they are just too ashamed to admit it. Ray Kelly is a stalinist pig.

Posted by nygrump | October 29, 2010 4:42 PM

I don't think anonymous 4:40pm, 11:34AM, and 12:14PM that we heard your opinion that you blame this on their name enough.

Maybe you can repeat your retarded opinion another three times?

Posted by Anonymous | October 29, 2010 5:02 PM

4:17: Which ones are you talking about? Some names, or a location?

Posted by Anonymous | October 29, 2010 5:09 PM

Does anyone know if Karen Black will be playing @ a different location & will the tickets be honored there? This really sucks.

Posted by Gia | October 29, 2010 5:40 PM

Of course it has to be at one of the few non-LiveNation venues (that actually books decent shows most of the time)

I mean really. . . we'll be stuck with nothing but Best Buy, Irving and Gramercy eventually, won't we??

Must be a comment from one of the owners who came up with the name of the place! Touched a nerve... eh? Truth is, if you didn't name your place "Party House" you probably wouldn't have been hassled so much. Regardless, the actions of NYPD against clubs is TOTALLY arbitrary. If someone with power doesn't like a venue... it's over. They may re-open temporarily, but they are flagged as a "problem" and will never be free of excessive meddling from the city. Too bad...

Posted by Anonymous | October 31, 2010 11:14 AM

I'm all for legalizing marijuana and am anti-police. HOWEVER, drugs ARE illegal and we cannot measure our illegal behaviors by what other illegal activities are occurring elsewhere. I went to Santos on a Friday to celebrate a new job AT A HOSPITAL. I had to take a drug test the following Monday. People were openly smoking blunts in the club and the smoke was SO thick that anyone would have EASILY gotten a contact high. It was SO obviously BAD that the door person gave us our money back no questions asked and was laughing with us. Smoke your joints at home, folks! Just as you don't want conservatives imposing your values on YOU, non-drug users do not want your drug use imposed on US!

Posted by Anonymous | November 1, 2010 11:15 AM

haha! nothing but douche bags working at that shitty ass club anyhow! fuck-em! you get what you deserve.
