There's something about the South that brings out the darkness and deep-seeded, unrelenting rage. Bands like Goatwhore, Soilent Green, Sourvein, Rwake, Weedeater, Dark Castle, Zoroaster, and countless others have proved that for every sunny Taylor Swift wannabe, there is an equal and opposing force.

Atlanta's Sons of Tonatiuh (that's "Tahn-a-tee-ah") specialize in the same crusty doom & gloom punk stylings that made Southern favorite sons Eyehategod & Buzzov*en so frightening/awe-inspiring. A merciless onslaught of down-tuned misanthropic riffs pepper the band's sludgy and powerful new self-titled debut out now on Hydro-Phonic Records. Speaking of Buzzov*en (who recently reunited and played Public Assembly), lead vocalist/guitarist Kirk Fisher will play a surprise show at Union Pool at 9PM on 10/12 (tomorrow) with Erik Wunder of Cobalt/Man's Gin.
