Yo La Tengo

Screaming Females, Dom and Yo La Tengo helped kick off CMJ at Brooklyn Bowl on Tuesday night. The Mog-sponsored free show was Yo La's only area show until Hanukkah, but just the first of a few for the two others. Screaming Females' next show is TONIGHT at MHOW (10/21). They also open for Corin Tucker at Maxwell's on Saturday, three days before Corin plays Bowery Ballroom. DOM has a bunch of CMJ shows including our Friday day party.

A full review of Brooklyn Bowl is coming. More pictures and a couple of videos from the show, below....

how crowded did it get? were people turned away? Yo La Tengo setlist?

Posted by Anonymous | October 21, 2010 9:21 AM

walked in at 6 with literally no problem. my brother got there at like 7:30 and didn't get in till 8:30. but the place seemed relatively empty the entire show, so they must've just been checking ID's reaaaaly slowly.

screaming females were great. said hi to marissa at the bar. DOM were god awful. how did this band get where they are? yo la tengo were just absolutely amazing. ira kaplan is a force to be reckoned with.

Place was crowded, but not too much. Got there right before YLT started (no interest in the openers) and had to wait 10 minutes on line mainly because of security checking ids.

Decent show, an hour and fifteen minutes. Not their best, but free shows are never great since you are playing to an indifferent crowd. I'm not one to remember setlists (too damn old), but it was a mix from the '90s on with no older songs except for Yellow Sarong during the encore. Opener was We're An American Band and set closer was I Heard You Looking.

P.S. YLT, can you please stop playing Mr. Tough? They have play it at every local show since it was released.

pretty sure we're an american band was the 2nd song... don't remember what the first way.

quiet you, i like mr. tough

"pretty sure we're an american band was the 2nd song... don't remember what the first way."

I got there late and I heard WAAB while waiting to get in. I assumed it was their first song since I didn't hear anything before hand. My mistake.

Mr. Tough was great the first few times. Now?

well, despite loving YLT forever, it was only my 2nd time seeing them... so hearing mr. tough was fine by me. i could see it getting old though...

The sound at Brooklyn Bowl is kind of shitty.

BLUE LINE SWINGER!

Posted by Anonymous | October 21, 2010 10:01 AM

Did Mitch Mitchell make a guest appearance, as is his wont?

Posted by Anonymous | October 21, 2010 10:02 AM

the reason it took people an hour to get in is souly Brooklyn Bowl wanting to keep a line outside, cause apparently they're d-bags like that. inside was about 60% capacity. overall the 'vibes' were pretty medicro.

"BLUE LINE SWINGER!"

Was not played. :) "I Heard You Looking" was their closing jam of choice.

"Did Mitch Mitchell make a guest appearance, as is his wont?"

No surprises. Well, except for Ira throwing a gutterball during Sugarcube (seriously).

Posted by Anonymous | October 21, 2010 10:20 AM

hahahaha it was a gutterball? i was all the way in front so was pretty confused till he came back on stage

"The sound at Brooklyn Bowl is kind of shitty."

Understatement of the day. One of the worst venues in the city. Epitomizes everything that's wrong with the Brooklyn obsession.

YLT covered Devo's "Beautiful World." It's all I remember because it's all I need to.

"No one goes there anymore it gets too crowded"

HA! It was crowded at all you freaks. Great spacey YLT show

"go see bisco at broooklyn bowl and tell me the sounds sh*tty. Its the bands not the sound a$$clowns"

If you are seeing bisco, it is most liking the drugs, not the band that makes it sound not shitty.

Posted by Anonymous | October 21, 2010 11:28 AM

In my experience it is pretty normal for bands to play certain songs at every show they do, local or otherwise.

Posted by Anonymous | October 21, 2010 11:40 AM

11:28 = massive n00b.

"11:28 = massive n00b."

So you can honestly tell me that when you saw bisco at the Brooklyn Bowl you did not take drugs?

There was no line if you got there early enough which is good cuz I was only there for Screaming Females and they RULED!

"I was only there for Screaming Females"

Fail.

Posted by Anonymous | October 21, 2010 5:40 PM

At least Screaming Females weren't as boring as DOM.

Posted by Anonymous | October 21, 2010 5:59 PM

DOM is the biggest joke since Neil Hamburger.
