Guided By Voices

I have a friend who, despite my attempts to proselytize, doesn't much care for the songs from Bee Thousand and Alien Lanes. He thinks they're catchy, sure - only a hopeless misanthrope or a space alien wouldn't - but he doesn't like the feel of those lo-fi songs: recored on four-track and cut up and reassembled, swathed in abrasive sound.

I've tried to tell him that in concert, those transistor-radio mini anthems, drawing on Pollard's "four P's" (pop, punk, prog, and psych), are utterly transformed into pure, pummeling, lung-busting ROCK. They are writ large and loud with beer-fueled bombast.

And so it was: 840 people pumped fists and held lighters aloft, shouting along in unison to the Beatle-esque "Echos Myron," the leering "Hot Freaks," the light-speed "Shocker in Gloomtown," the snotty call-and-response of "Lethargy," the euphoric "Gold Star for Robot Boy." -[The Phoenix]

The above review refers to Guided By Voices' November 5th Boston show but, but these pictures come from the NYC show that took place at Terminal 5 two days later. A review, setlist, video and 177 comments as of this posting, are HERE. The pictures and a few more videos, below...

ABSOLUTELY THE BEST SHOW IN THE HISTORY AND FUTURE OF THE ENTIRE UNIVERSE

Posted by Anonymous | November 9, 2010 2:25 PM

haha, I think I see a total of two or three girls in the audience pics. even worse girl:boy ratio than at the shellac show.

Posted by Anonymous | November 9, 2010 2:25 PM

WORST SHOW OF 2010.

Posted by Anonymous | November 9, 2010 2:29 PM

Oh its a total sausage fest of old cock. ewww

Posted by Anonymous | November 9, 2010 2:30 PM

Why are all of the old hippie bands reuniting this year? Why dont they play 1 festival, so we can avoid all of them together?

Posted by Anonymous | November 9, 2010 2:32 PM

Old farts paying to watch older farts suck. What a waste...

Posted by Anonymous | November 9, 2010 2:34 PM

oh my GOD, enough with the "hippy" and "old" comments. you will never be as cool as robert pollard.

Posted by Anonymous | November 9, 2010 2:34 PM

Pollard is the American version of Shane McGowan.

Also, Tobin Sprout is GBV. I remember seeing him at Maxwell's and the guy played for over two hours...

Posted by Anonymous | November 9, 2010 2:35 PM

How are they not hippies? Do explain, hipster...

Posted by Anonymous | November 9, 2010 2:37 PM

What is with all the Hippie hate on this blog! I love GBV! and they have always been a Hippie band. What the fuck yo! GBV and Phish RULE. end of discussion fags!

Posted by Anonymous | November 9, 2010 2:39 PM

try to write a song that's better than one of pollard's shittiest songs and then talk shit about him. till then, go back to being a nobody

Posted by Anonymous | November 9, 2010 2:41 PM

I never say this, but seriously- I wish I could get a refund. This was a very unimpressive show. It has nothing to do with how old they are. They just sucked and could have played a cheaper venue.

Posted by Anonymous | November 9, 2010 2:42 PM

re: those last couple of pictures of the crowd- packt like sardines in a tin can. geebus.

Posted by Anonymous | November 9, 2010 2:43 PM

Is that why the club smelled like horse manure? I had to leave after 5 songs. Fuckin hippies ruin a good time. :(

GBV RULES PHISH SUCKS GBV RULES PHISH SUCKS GBV RULES PHISH SUCKS GBV RULES PHISH SUCKS GBV RULES PHISH SUCKS GBV RULES PHISH SUCKS GBV RULES PHISH SUCKS GBV RULES PHISH SUCKS

Posted by Anonymous | November 9, 2010 2:45 PM

How can you compare GBV and Phish??? Phish are incredible musicians that sell out gigantic tours. GBV are old farts playing dinky clubs for Williamsburg trust fund idiots.

Posted by Anonymous | November 9, 2010 2:47 PM

It would've been nice if this thread didn't simply become a continuation of the last tard fight.

Posted by Anonymous | November 9, 2010 2:49 PM

Absolutely the shittiest show I have ever seen at T5! and I'm not a T5 hater.

GBV SUCKED.

Posted by Anonymous | November 9, 2010 2:49 PM

Bob Pollard has the smallest penis in Ohio. true fact!

Posted by Anonymous | November 9, 2010 2:50 PM

Fuck anyone that says Phish sucks on a comment thread about Guided By Voices. What's the point? There is no logic to that.

Posted by Anonymous | November 9, 2010 2:51 PM

I was actually expecting a sausage fest, but there were a bunch of girls around me. Also, fucking awesome show

Posted by Anonymous | November 9, 2010 2:51 PM

"Bob Pollard has the smallest penis in Ohio. true fact!"

lol!

Posted by Anonymous | November 9, 2010 2:53 PM

Jesus, someone's got a vendetta against GBV. Get a life.

Usually it's the Daft Punk or hummus idiots, but these threads have made me pine for them.

Posted by Anonymous | November 9, 2010 2:54 PM

Its hilarious how much love Interpol gets on this blog , over GBV. GBV are old as fuck, but can bring it as hard as Phish, Interpol, or any classic lineup.

Posted by Anonymous | November 9, 2010 2:54 PM

Bob Pollard loves the hummus with his flomax! Try it fans.

Posted by Anonymous | November 9, 2010 2:55 PM

somebody please give that guy a refund!! I WANT MY MONEY BACK AAAHHHH!!!!! SERIOUSLY!!!!

Posted by Anonymous | November 9, 2010 2:55 PM

I HATE THIS BAND!!! PLEASE RE-POST!!

Posted by Anonymous | November 9, 2010 2:57 PM

I have seen GBV 25 times before. Maybe it was the venue. I'm not going to go there, but the show really did suck ass. They should practice a bit more.

Posted by Anonymous | November 9, 2010 2:58 PM

Everybody on these pictures looks bored out of their mind. Never seen so many cross-armed idiots in one place. These old farts on stage have no stage presence. The songs are crap. Terminal 5 is the worst venue in the world.

Posted by Anonymous | November 9, 2010 3:00 PM

I saw GBV 35 times and it was the worst show ever.

Posted by Anonymous | November 9, 2010 3:00 PM

There werent any girls at the show! why do BV readers lie about that? IF you like the show, the music should be enough to satisfy.

I thought they were OK. Enough with all the fuss. THEY WERE OK.

Posted by Anonymous | November 9, 2010 3:01 PM

i guess you're looking at different photos...

Posted by Anonymous | November 9, 2010 3:02 PM

Would people stop writing "worst show ever" or "best show ever"

Both are equally annoying and not of any truth.

Posted by regular reader | November 9, 2010 3:02 PM

I never went to this show, but it was the worst show ever. THE WORST!!

Posted by Anonymous | November 9, 2010 3:03 PM

I only see fun bands like Dirty Projectors and Animal Collective. Went to this and left unsatisfied. These dudes need to incorporate some backdrop imagery. That would be cool. They are okay, but this needs to be more multifauceted. Like, add some more media to your music. And loops. Come on, more loops.

Posted by Anonymous | November 9, 2010 3:05 PM

Two more hours until five o'clock. Can't wait to rock'n'roll on my couch! GBV sucks, btw!!!

Posted by Anonymous | November 9, 2010 3:09 PM

Bro-Down 2010! And I can say this firmly and proudly as I spot myself in one of the crowd pics lol. GBV is a boys club!

Posted by Anonymous | November 9, 2010 3:15 PM

Maybe it would be better for you if they had more lasers and laptops up on stage? Maybe their songs should be written and preformed by a neon visor wearing 20-something from Southern California? I'm sure we would all pay top dollar for that compelling display. I could see that lasting for 30 years.

Posted by Anonymous | November 9, 2010 3:15 PM

anyone notice how GBV kinda looks like Pink Floyd circa 1995?

Posted by Anonymous | November 9, 2010 3:20 PM

finding a girl who like GBV is like finding a girl who likes mr. show

Posted by Anonymous | November 9, 2010 3:21 PM

and by the way the show ruled, i bet one lonely girl with too much time on her hands is spreading the Pollard hate. the man is clearly a genius, let them take some much earned money from your next indie boy band crush

Posted by Anonymous | November 9, 2010 3:24 PM

3:15 - yep, that the sort of thing I was talking about. Mix things up, play with it and have fun. I understand that they are spinning the drinking angle to entertain their audience, but it's all about attracting new young people to their franchise and things like lasers are way cool among them. I see the potential, but they need to shift to a higher gear and cruise this baby to stardom. Never give up!

Posted by Anonymous | November 9, 2010 3:26 PM

3 Morons commenting over and over...

1 moron likes this band. 1 moron doesn't. 1 moron never heard of them, but keeps chiming in.

Posted by Anonymous | November 9, 2010 3:27 PM

Pollard looks sickly old in that top photo. He didnt look that old at the show. Interesting...

Posted by Anonymous | November 9, 2010 3:28 PM

WORST SHOW, WORST VENUE IN THE UNIVERSE.

Posted by Anonymous | November 9, 2010 3:29 PM

Nobody will care about this show in ten months.

Posted by Anonymous | November 9, 2010 3:30 PM

People need to RELAX on this thread, trying to prove this show was the greatest event on Earth. Really!

GBV is not Roger Waters performing The Wall!

Posted by Anonymous | November 9, 2010 3:30 PM

Nobody will care about this show in 10 days.

Posted by Anonymous | November 9, 2010 3:31 PM

"People need to RELAX on this thread, trying to prove this show was the greatest event on Earth. Really!

Thats the truth, for once! Get a life GBV fans!

Nobody will care about that show in 10 seconds. LOLOLOL.

Posted by Anonymous | November 9, 2010 3:34 PM

Seriosuly though, that was an amazing show.

Posted by Anonymous | November 9, 2010 3:35 PM

more like- Get a clue GBV fans! I bet %99 of the people writing in, own 3 or less GBV albums.

This band SUCKS.

Posted by Anonymous | November 9, 2010 3:35 PM

Pollards from Ohio? Why does he sing with a British accent? Lame.

Posted by Anonymous | November 9, 2010 3:37 PM

They only made 3 albums with the classic lineup! All the rest are garbage.

Gee Bee Vee!

Posted by Anonymous | November 9, 2010 3:38 PM

^^^ That's not even true! The original line up made way more than 3 albums. And I love most of the albums that came after. You stupid Hippies! GBV fans are the lamest. 3:38 is talking shit that's not true!

Posted by Anonymous | November 9, 2010 3:42 PM

Hippies or hipsters, 60 year olds or 16 year olds, who really gives a shit? As long as it's music that makes you happy, that should be all that matters. If you don't like this "hippie" music, then don't listen. If you don't like the venue then don't go to the show. If no music is good enough and the high point of your day is posting negative comments on BV, then I just feel sorry for you and your very sad life. Start your own band and shut the fuck up.

Posted by Anonymous | November 9, 2010 3:46 PM

I have rarely if ever seen a BV thread more insincere, comment-baiting and irony-clogged than this one. AND I FUCKIN LOVE IT. TYPE ON HIPPIES!!

Posted by Anonymous | November 9, 2010 3:54 PM

GBV is not hippie music!!! They were one of the first lo fi indie bands that spawned tons of new bands that became more successful, much the the VU before them.

Posted by Anonymous | November 9, 2010 4:02 PM

hippies

Posted by Anonymous | November 9, 2010 4:03 PM

click on the video of salty salute and still claim this is "hippy" music. it sounds like Wire fronted by Phil Collins. In a good way.

Posted by Anonymous | November 9, 2010 4:04 PM

best worst show ever! they rocked.

Posted by JC | November 9, 2010 4:31 PM

there's either been a massive increase in BV readership or a massive increase in general stupidity

Posted by Anonymous | November 9, 2010 4:39 PM

These guys commenting on the lack of women at the show as if they would've talked to them anyway is hilarious.

Posted by Anonymous | November 9, 2010 4:52 PM

hippies are the new hummus... why respond ?

Posted by Anonymous | November 9, 2010 5:02 PM

WTF with him playing a Squire P-Bass?!?! Bobby must be taking a big slice of that pie.

Also they're old.

Posted by Anonymous | November 9, 2010 5:05 PM

afraid to ask: how was blitzen trapper?

Posted by donn | November 9, 2010 5:34 PM

blitzen trapper were awful!!! it was the worst show ever for a reason. both bands were shit. the venue was shit. there were no girls. there were a lot of old people. so bad. so so bad...

Posted by Anonymous | November 9, 2010 5:53 PM

Great Show, GBV.

Posted by Anonymous | November 9, 2010 6:49 PM

it's been 10 yrs since I moved to the West Coast, but it is nice to see that NYers are still the same dismissive pricks they've always been.

My girlfriend and I rocked our asses off at GBV and we went home, got stoned, watched Mr Show and fucked like rabbits afterward. Life rules and Bob knows it. Being an opinionated 20 year old just leads to being a miserable 30 year old.

Posted by Anonymous | November 9, 2010 7:06 PM

I love all of the low-brow hipster kids on here complaining about how 'GBV sucked'.

That would explain the notably large number of losers in attendence at the show claiming to be "into-early-GBV" when in reality you were all off playing video games and basically accomplishing nothing with your lives at the time. Thankfully there were a large number of old-school and new-school GBV fans in the crowd who are smart enough to know GBV's place in indie-rock lore.

4:39: yes, this blog has started attracting a serious number of uneducated morons that wouldn't know music if it fell out of the sky and landed on their faces.

The losers on here complaining have no choice but to give props to GBV. Pollard has 1,300 songs registered with BMI, and was doing "real" indie rock back before you even knew what rock actually was. Does anyone on this sad little blog have a single song registered with BMI that someone's heard other then your mother? That's what I thought. The man has more music output then all your little effeminate-wimpy "we've been in a band a week we need a publicist now" bands put together.

Posted by Anonymous | November 9, 2010 7:55 PM

Also 7:06 - relax, a handful of wimpy Williamsburg "ironic" kids don't represent all of NYC, but again, being out in Cali as long as you have it's probably easy to forget these things. How is that side-ways baseball cap treating you? Oh wait - there I go again - judging West Coasters. Nevermind!

geez this just made me want to have a big strofoam plate of fat old cocks, like on a buffet from a sterno full of old cocks, and it's like a sausage but it's NOT!

dicks in my mouf with some sauce

Posted by steve | November 9, 2010 11:00 PM

What's with all the "hippies" and "hipsters" crap? GbV are just rock & roll fans, and like almost everyone else probably sat in a basement listening to records, drinking crappy beer and smoking shitty weed. They decided to do something for kicks, found an audience, and now we have hundreds of hit-or-miss albums (and that is not a put down - Pollard has no edit function). They do what they do. I cringe thinking about what bands the haters prefer: Arcade Fire? Girls? Matt & Kim? Go screw yourself, it's only rock & roll.

Posted by The Intl | November 10, 2010 1:41 AM

After watching all this drinking and smoking, they should be called Guided by VICES:)

Posted by Anonymous | November 10, 2010 8:22 AM

what a great treat it was to see GBV for the first time in my life!

Posted by Anonymous | November 10, 2010 1:05 PM

It was a great show, too bad New York fans are fucking faggots. There weren't too many chicks there, but I did see one spitting in a guy's face for no reason. Love the band, hate the fans.

Posted by Anonymous | November 10, 2010 2:29 PM

All the haters were definitely not at the same show I was. One of the best shows I've ever been to.

Posted by Anonymous | November 10, 2010 4:00 PM

the "haters" are one person who for some reason finds it funny to call the band old, hippies and that they put on a bad show. nonsense, that was one of the most energetic shows i've ever seen

Posted by Anonymous | November 10, 2010 4:04 PM

i love GBV. i own all of their records, most of bob's solo records, most of the side-projects (airport 5, takeovers, circus devils, boston spaceships, etc.), books, a few issues of EAT (bob's art zine), singles, box sets, vinyl 7-inches, etc. i'm obviously a huge fan, have been for years.
the classic lineup is my favorite, and i'm so happy they got back together for this tour. i went to three shows, also going to the NYE show. they sounded best in columbus. bob's voice sounded amazing, they played super tight, and they sounded better than they ever have. best show i've been to.
yes, they are older now...bob turned 53 on halloween, and the rest are around the same. so what? have you seen how high bob can kick his leg? i was in ballet for 12 years, and now i'm in my 20s, and i can't do that. also, bob started singing with a british accent because he was afraid of sounding like a hillbilly. plus, his favorite band is the who, and naturally when you idolize someone you copy them in some fashion.
all of those guys are very talented, really nice, super fun people. they love their fans and are always appreciative of everyone helping them. bob is brilliant. tobin is incredible. mitch is and always will be the destroyer. demos is a rock star, and kevin is an amazing drummer. if you do not like them, don't listen to them. don't go to the shows, and don't read articles about them. do i troll lady gaga threads and tell everyone that she sucks? she does suck, but no, i have a life, and i don't waste time on things that are not worth my time.
also, i am a girl, i am 27, and i fucking love mr. show. so shut the fuck up, get a fucking life, and leave gbv the fuck alone.

Posted by anonymous | November 10, 2010 4:19 PM

4:19 just owned all

Posted by Anonymous | November 10, 2010 4:22 PM

Beautiful job 4:19. To be poster who can't find girls into Mr. Show and GBV -- try harder. It's not that difficult. And to all the people complaining/remarking on the SAUSAGE of gbv shows -- nah. Not really. Been to plenty of em, both up front and not so close, have always seen women around. People see what they want to. Same old shit.

Posted by Anonymous | November 10, 2010 4:31 PM

my girl actually forced me to take her to this in San Francisco....and it ruled. After rocking our faces completely off, Mitch jumped off the stage, lit a cig and hung out with the crowd and security as everyone filed out. Best band ever.

Posted by Anonymous | November 10, 2010 8:13 PM

No girl fans? Praisely was there...va-va-voom! She's hard fucking core! Not to mention, easy on the eyes.

Posted by Anonymous | November 10, 2010 11:33 PM

This band sucks yo

Posted by Anonymous | November 11, 2010 11:36 AM

Interpol walks all over this band. I feel sorry for people under age 45 that went to this show over Interpol. Clearly you have no taste, and you know nothing about punk.

Posted by I had to work today | November 11, 2010 11:42 AM

There were girls at the show! You must have been in the back.

Posted by GBV fan | November 11, 2010 11:57 AM

A Sausage Salute

Posted by Anonymous | November 11, 2010 12:06 PM

People need to stop fag bashing, and hippie bashing on this blog. Guided by Voices are hippies that could beat you down if you had any balls enough to step up to them!

Posted by wingwalker77 | November 11, 2010 12:09 PM

wingwalker77 just owned the sausage.

Posted by I heart hippies | November 11, 2010 12:11 PM

Angry hippies make me laugh. lulz

Posted by Anonymous | November 11, 2010 12:16 PM

GBV are old as fuck. I doubt they are angry if some bored co workers are writing on this blog about them.

Posted by Anonymous | November 11, 2010 12:19 PM

The point has been made but bears repeating: 'Propeller' was to be Bob's farewell to music. It came out in 1992, when he was nearly 36 years old and had been a 4th grade teacher for over a decade already.

You snarky little fucks won't ever contribute *anything* by comparison.

Uncle Bob is also in his hometown's athletic hall of fame. Way more jock than hippy and in 20 years will still be able to beat your sorry, simpering Williamsburg asses.

Posted by The Truth | November 11, 2010 1:27 PM

Bob's nephew has joined the thread! That's hilarious! How old are you, 49?

Posted by Anonymous | November 11, 2010 3:26 PM

Guided by Voices were great 20 years ago. No one can deny how much Pollard did 20 years ago. But the Terminal 5 show SUCKED. I hope the Irving Plaza show is better or this whole tour was a disgrace.

Posted by Anonymous | November 11, 2010 3:28 PM

This band is so old, they should reunite under the name- Terminal 5. lulz!

Posted by DA TROOF | November 11, 2010 3:30 PM

OMG, that's the funniest comment ever posted on BV! 3:30 just owned all!

This thread needs to die- quicker than Pollard.

Posted by Anonymous | November 11, 2010 3:34 PM

Stupid hippies keep taking the bait :)

Posted by Anonymous | November 11, 2010 3:36 PM

thank god they're old. you stupid fucking idiot kids are so delusional and borderline retarded that you wouldn't know good music if it shat on your faces. GBV are heroes, rockstars. stop picking your noses and playing with your privates. you're disgusting. interpol, really? let's see what interpol are doing in their 50's. nobody will fucking care, and you'll be old with them, defending them from the younger folks who think they're 'hippies'.
