she played some songs on piano
Joanna Newsom

There were no guest appearances by Rick Ross, John Legend or Nicki Minaj, and Ivanka Trump wasn't tweeting from the balcony with Spike Lee, but there were a lot of SNL cast members in attendance! Seriously though, Joanna Newsom, complete with family in attendance (SNL cast member included), put on an amazing show at Carnegie Hall Tuesday night, 11/23, to a super crowd who loved being there as much as she and her band did. Harp, piano, drums, guitar, banjo, violin, recorder, genius arrangements and some very impressive trombone playing was just some of what was happening on stage at the venue with the super acoustics. Standing ovations happened after her set and after the one-song encore. The show ended at 11.

Second opener Ryan Francesconi, who is also in her band, played three solo instrumental songs on guitar. He performs again solo, and as a trio (with New York percussionist Timothy Quigley and Australian violinist Mirabai Peart who is also a member of Joanna Newsom's touring ensemble) tonight (11/24) at Sycamore in Brooklyn.

I'm probably one of the few who went to both Joanna and Kanye shows tonight. Joanna was very good. Kanye was out of this world. Overall a great night. Need some sleep now.

Who was the SNL cast member? Fred Armisen?

Posted by Anonymous | November 24, 2010 9:03 AM

surprised she didn't play '81.

Posted by Anonymous | November 24, 2010 9:08 AM

Thanks for the photos! That damned/blessed harp was blocking my view, so these are nice. Re: SNL, Samberg and Armisen were part of a whole three-row family section in the middle there – I don't watch enough TV to know the others. I heard Mike Myers, of all people, though?

Anywa, screw them. She was amazing.

Well that was a mind blowing, life altering experience. I'm 99% sure I walked down the stairs side by side with Jeff Mangum. Can someone else confirm this?

Posted by Anonymous | November 24, 2010 9:18 AM

david longstreth of the dirty projectors was also in the audience. a couple of girls mobbed him on the street and squealed.

Posted by Anonymous | November 24, 2010 9:54 AM

Abby Elliott from SNL was there with Fred Armisen.

what a mind-blowing show. thank you for posting the pics and setlist! the rearranged versions of her older songs left me speechless- i hope they do release this as a live album..

i had a feeling she wasn't going to play Only Skin...but Emily totally made up for it! goosebumps! great show!

Posted by Anonymous | November 24, 2010 11:12 AM

Yeah, pretty sure it was Jeff Mangum.

Posted by Anonymous | November 24, 2010 11:25 AM

girls squealing for dave longstreth , haha sure. sure.

Posted by Anonymous | November 24, 2010 11:32 AM

Rick Ross, John Legend or Nicki Minaj = Ew

Posted by AstralForest | November 24, 2010 12:09 PM

Excellent performance. She is really on of the best live acts around.

Posted by Anonymous | November 24, 2010 12:50 PM

I saw Amy Goodman from Democracy now there, and 15 people who looked like Jonathan Franzen.

Posted by Anonymous | November 24, 2010 1:02 PM

Joanna Newsom is possibly the worst performer I have ever heard. Just awful.

Posted by Anonymous | November 24, 2010 1:21 PM

i knew i wasn't crazy, that was jeff magnum! saw one of the girls from the dirty projectors there, as well a few snl members. i didn't see samberg though.

kinda wish they skipped neil morgan and started joanna's set earlier though. did not dig his set. amazing show nonetheless.

Joanna Newsom is possibly the best performer I have ever heard. Just awfully good.

Posted by Anonymous | November 24, 2010 1:42 PM

that was a fucking amazing show

Posted by Anonymous | November 24, 2010 1:45 PM

yeah it was jeff mangum... but what was weird was when he burped right in the middle of "peach, plum, pear". how awkward...

Posted by Anonymous | November 24, 2010 1:50 PM

her voice is just....so annoying

Posted by Anonymous | November 24, 2010 2:44 PM

I was there too. This is the third time I've seen her and this was definitely the best. Mesmerizing.

Posted by I Am The Angel | November 24, 2010 2:47 PM

The weirdest part about Jeff Mangum being there was when I'm pretty sure he had his penis out and was grinding Andy Samberg.

Posted by Anonymous | November 24, 2010 3:12 PM

I swear I also noticed 70's sensation Ken Snyder (of "By Request Only" fame)sitting next to Mangum.

samberg was there

Posted by blah | December 3, 2010 11:18 AM

hey 6:0drunko8 AM. i think it's the other way around. joanna "would not" with a loser like you.

Posted by Anonymous | December 4, 2010 12:51 AM

One of few artists, who I actually get nauseous listening to.

Posted by Anonymous | December 4, 2010 5:46 PM

I think the weirdest part was when Jeff Mangum ate that entire suckling pig with his bare hands for the duration of "In California." Strange man, that one.

Posted by bitey mouth | December 6, 2010 4:13 AM

she looks really preety on these pictures.
and im aware that is not music nor this performance related.

She reminds me of my cousin I used to have sex with before I knew she was my cousin. We still sleep with one another when she's in town.

Niel Morgan ruined this show. He should bare in mind he's not the draw card here, hence the name: Joanna Newsom. Neil spends most of his time trying to steal the show, and failing.

I have loved Joanna's music from the start, but realized that I have hardly listened to it since I went to this show.

E interessante como ela toca harpa.
