"Great show. Though, totally unnecessary 3+ hour wait to get in." - Anonymous

Nicki Minaj & Kanye West @ Bowery Ballroom (photo by Questlove)
Kanye West

Kanye West played his entire new album My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy from start to finish, followed by a four song encore Tuesday night at the intimate Bowery Ballroom in NYC where Kanye literally brought in "all of the lights" (there were lots of lights). The show started with people who weren't Diddy (he walked right in) waiting on a long line. The show ended with Kanye going on a rant about racism, George Bush, Taylor Swift, the Today Show, etc. Audio of that final portion can be streamed below.

Album guest stars Kid Cudi, Raekwon, Jay-Z and RZA were nowhere to be found, but Terena Taylor, Bon Iver aka Justin Vernon (who might appear again with Kanye in the Thanksgiving Day Parade), Rick Ross, Nicki Minaj (who plays Hammerstein Ballroom on Thanksgiving), Pusha T, Prynce Cy Hi, Swizz Beatz, and John Legend (whose friend Questlove was in the balcony taking pictures) all performed at the show that started around 12:40am and was was over by around 2:15. Full setlist, videos and that audio below...

Anybody know the situation with Ticketmaster/Bowery Presents refunds? Who to contact, etc.?

Posted by Anonymous | November 24, 2010 3:39 AM

I made it in during the second song (after a 3 hour wait like it says above). About how many people were not let in?

The Bowery staff sucked horribly. We were all not told a thing until minutes before the show, then we were told conflicting stories from all different members of their staff about where to line up, what time the show would start, if everyone would get in, the list goes on and on).

Posted by Anonymous | November 24, 2010 3:43 AM

Someone would have to pay me at least $100 to go to this.

Posted by Anonymous | November 24, 2010 3:43 AM

Probably more likely that Kanye sucks horribly and didn't tell anyone what was going on. Who would wait for three hours for this douchebag?

Posted by Anonymous | November 24, 2010 3:46 AM

Bonnaroo at bowery

Posted by Anonymous | November 24, 2010 3:49 AM

No refunds

Posted by Anonymous | November 24, 2010 3:51 AM

Like it or not, the man just dropped a critically acclaimed album.

You may not like him but statements like "sucks horribly" are simply laughable at best now.

Posted by Taner | November 24, 2010 3:51 AM

Critically acclaimed. lol
Kanye is mainstream pop crap.

Just because a lot of losers like him doesn't mean he doesn't suck horribly.

A lot of people watch American Idol too. Does that mean it is good music?

Posted by Anonymous | November 24, 2010 3:55 AM

i heard tom yaps opened

Posted by roedood | November 24, 2010 3:56 AM

And what a complete fucking douchebag for making people wait for three hours for a concert and then overselling it and not letting people in with tickets so rich fucks can get in for free.

Posted by Anonymous | November 24, 2010 3:56 AM

^ quick! Call the wahhhhmbulance!

Posted by Anonymous | November 24, 2010 4:03 AM

why doesn't my mom feed me milk i want a refund!

Posted by Anonymous | November 24, 2010 4:16 AM

3:56 is right! The rich fucks that paid $100 to get into a show on a Tuesday night should get in before the rich fucks that helped Kanye get to where he is today! Yeah! Smash the state! Take back nyu! Yeah!

Posted by Anonymous | November 24, 2010 4:27 AM

Get yr refund and stfu you faggots.

Posted by Anonymous | November 24, 2010 5:43 AM

I don't remember much about the show. I was too busy stuffing my face at the hummus and dinges spread. Mmmm yummy.

Posted by Anonymous | November 24, 2010 6:09 AM

these guys werent idlewild?

Posted by Anonymous | November 24, 2010 6:16 AM

Hey 3:51. Hitler and Susan Boyle were critically acclaimed too. Oh and so was Daughtry. BTW do you mean critically acclaimed as in the dbags at pitchfork gave it a 10?

Posted by Anonymous | November 24, 2010 6:20 AM

You know what I like about that audio - it's not his REAL feelings about all his public drama - it's the New York Yuppie Hipster Class doing its thing and TALKING TO EACH OTHER LIKE THEY'RE IN A BAR while he's ranting.

Posted by Anonymous | November 24, 2010 6:23 AM

To everyone waiting outside,

Thank you for being a part of my marketing parade to promote my new album. If you didn't make it in that is because you were never meant to and if you paid $100 for a ticket you are probably a fan of George W. Rich people suck. Poor people RULE! That's why I'm giving up my millions to work on a relief project in Africa with Dave Chapelle.

Kanye Carter

Posted by Kanye West | November 24, 2010 6:34 AM

Wow, who cares about his music, that rant at the end is just plain obnoxious. Please tell me that it's not and I'll pay you $100

Posted by Anonymous | November 24, 2010 6:47 AM

Hey 6:20. I know it's called a "ballroom", But it's basically just two bars and a microphone.

Posted by Anonymous | November 24, 2010 6:58 AM

Saw him at the ill fated Bonnaroo show and it was the worst thing I have ever seen on a stage in my life and that is counting all the of my sister's dance recitals I used to have to go to. I was there for about five minutes and felt embarrased for being there to be honest.

Posted by Anonymous | November 24, 2010 7:06 AM

Kanye obnoxious? That's out of line. You can't refer to the "pharaoh" of crap, I mean rap with such disregard.

Posted by Anonymous | November 24, 2010 7:11 AM

Niki Minaj looks like the love child of Ru Paul and Grace Jones. A Transexual version of a black Cher. Does anybody know what I mean?

Posted by Rick ross | November 24, 2010 7:20 AM

Yaps was there?

Posted by Anonymous | November 24, 2010 7:47 AM

That rant is pretty obnoxious. Can't he just get over it already...everybody else has

Posted by Anonymous | November 24, 2010 8:06 AM

Am I the only one who thinks Bon Iver looks fucking ridiculous standing on the stage during Monster? He looks like he got lost and just ended up on stage. Awkwaaaard.

Posted by Anonymous | November 24, 2010 8:12 AM

Am I the only one who thinks Bon Iver looks fucking ridiculous standing on the stage during Monster? He looks like he got lost and just ended up on stage. Awkwaaaard.

Posted by Anonymous | November 24, 2010 8:13 AM

So you either paid $100 and waited in line past midnight without getting in or paid $100 and watched Kanye karaoke his new album until 3am.

I'm not sure who got more ripped off.

Posted by Anonymous | November 24, 2010 8:14 AM

What the fuck is he talking about? He sounds like Sarah Palin.

Posted by Anonymous | November 24, 2010 8:21 AM

Pretty funny tweets about the people at the show last night:

@necolebitchie: I don't think I've seen one black person in this line for kanye's show

@woodensleepers: Dudes with Windsor knots in line for Kanye.

@JohnJPacker: People drinking #4loko thru straws in line for #kanye...says a lot about this crowd

Posted by Anonymous | November 24, 2010 8:31 AM

Show was absolutely incredible.

Posted by Anonymous | November 24, 2010 8:31 AM

why is he so angry

New entry for Best NYC of 2010? Best Show Ever in the History of the World?

Posted by Anonymous | November 24, 2010 8:35 AM

@xaphoonjones: Drinking 4loko and going to this Kanye show at the bowery ballroom is the 2010 equivalent of seeing Jimi Hendrix while on LSD.

@xaphoonjones = chiddy bang

Posted by Anonymous | November 24, 2010 8:36 AM

@acmasterbator - i just totally peepeed myself during "paranoid". EPIC

Posted by Anonymous | November 24, 2010 8:37 AM

Matthew Dear at Music Hall of Williamsburg was a better show. And it was only $15.

i LOVE fishsticks. i LOVE putting fishsticks in my MOUTH.

Posted by Anonymous | November 24, 2010 8:59 AM

Bon Iver stood on stage like some sort of bodyguard most of the time. Weird.

KANGAY

Posted by fish fisher | November 24, 2010 9:19 AM

So Bowery Presents did not let in people that paid $100 a ticket? Insane.

Posted by Anonymous | November 24, 2010 9:19 AM

I thought I was paying $100 to see Cornell West speak. After waiting 3+ hours, drinking FourLoko that was given to me by a young man in a v-neck shirt, and ripping the suede elbow patches off from my favorite tweed blazer, I was pleasantly surprised by this obtuse musical experience.

Posted by Anonymous | November 24, 2010 9:23 AM

I saw this schmuck for free when his first album was out at Kean - He was awful then.

Posted by Anonymous | November 24, 2010 9:32 AM

People keep saying only the rich got in. It looks like the rich who shelled out $100 didn't get in. Who actually got in are the people who work in promotions departments at different labels and media houses. They probably make $8/hr.

Posted by Anonymous | November 24, 2010 9:32 AM

From the NYTimes Arts Blog:

"For at least three hours, any and every important-sounding industry affiliation was cited to impress the door staff, though after a while it didn’t seem to matter. “Def Jam don’t work here,” barked one of the bouncers after the record company’s name was invoked by a few too many line-cutters. But it was just part of the fame ritual that everyone was more than willing to buy into on Tuesday night."

Too funny.

Posted by Anonymous | November 24, 2010 9:34 AM

i was one of the people who waited in line for 2 hours and finally got in after we cut to the front. meanwhile the crowd getting in varied from diddy to ivanka trump..pretty varied crowd but mostly white bread.

Posted by anon | November 24, 2010 9:44 AM

what was so hard about letting people in... invasive pat downs?

Posted by Anonymous | November 24, 2010 9:52 AM

Why does bv sweat kanye so much? He is a jerk?

Posted by Anonymous | November 24, 2010 9:52 AM

"He is a jerk?"

Is that really a question?

Posted by Anonymous | November 24, 2010 9:59 AM

the definitive asshole of 2010. plays a last-minute, record release party for industry professionals (acceptable), but then subsidizes the cost of said performance by charging "fans" $100 to get through the door - which they couldn't - even if they had been waiting since the stated "8PM Doors", per Bowery's website, only to find that they are meant to wait in line until 10PM, and then until 12AM, and then are finally turned away, $100 lighter.

who.
cares.

Posted by Anonymous | November 24, 2010 9:59 AM

people didnt get in? i waited for almost 3 hours too but i got in finally, i was pissed i missed 2 songs, but i still thought the show was so good! Its weird that people who dont like kanye and didnt want to go to the show comment on here, if you have no interest in this then why bother

When in doubt, Bing it!

"Bing It On!"

Kanye? Yes he Kan!

Posted by Anonymous | November 24, 2010 10:26 AM

Ye I think you are a mad genius runaway is an amazing song. But I also think Taylor is a gifted songwriter "32 and still growing up now" she is so right. She rode it.... come on grow up... defend you? You are both gifted artists. you apologized she said it was sincere and she accepted now you have to move on. Some of us can love both of you because good music is good music.

Couple of random thoughts (not at anyone in particular)

- Shut the fuck up already.

- You signed on for this shit Justin, move around! Do the worm or something.

- That'a a lot of posts for an artist that so many people here hate.

- Hot shit is still shit.

- His album would have completely failed if Compressors did not exist.

- Still can't believe his mom died during a procedure that attempted to make her feel better about the way she looks.

- Have fun with friends and family tomorrow if you can.

I'm sorry...WHY should Taylor have to come to HIS defenses? hahaaa what a selfish comment. I just don't understand his way of thinking. Someone please explain to me why she should have to defend him.
Kanye always thinks he's owed something. He's not owed crap.

And as if Taylor's song "Innocent" wasn't enough to publicly let the world know that she forgave him. She doesn't like to talk about her boyfriends in interviews, let alone Kanye. She speaks through her songs, and she spoke to Kanye with words like "who you are is not what you did, you're still an innocent. life is a tough crowd."
This guy needs to seriously shut his mouth. He obviously hasn't learned anything through his mistakes. SMH SMH

Posted by Anonymous | November 24, 2010 11:56 AM

The people(and thank god there are only a few) who are saying last night's show was incredible are either shills or the biggest know nothing music fans in the world. I got in for free on the list(sold my plus one for 500), got right in and still felt gipped.

-Crowd was awful. Biggest douchebags in the world but you can tell that from the tweets.

-I really like Kanye's new record but as with all hip hop live shows, he could not recreate those dense sounds live. It sounded NOT GOOD.

-Justin Vernon, you looked like an idiot up there and so out of place.

-Ivanka Trump has some big ass amazing titties up close.

Finally, for those that actually paid and had to wait and either got in late or did not get in at all I have no sympathy for you. You get what you deserve for paying that outrageous amount to see this train wreck of a show.

Posted by Anonymous | November 24, 2010 12:55 PM

Posted by Anonymous | November 24, 2010 1:10 PM

Bon Iver sounds like a Muppet on heroin...

Posted by onceler | November 24, 2010 1:32 PM

given how long they waited to start things, shouldn't they have at least given it a *few* more minutes for all ticket holders to get in? honestly, had i paid $106 to go to this as one of the "lucky ones" to get through ticketmaster, and freeloading label dolts pushed their way in front causing me to miss some and possibly all of the show, i'd be very upset (and probably realistically want my money back).

Posted by Anonymous | November 24, 2010 1:33 PM

hiphop has the shittiest values.
it's all about bling and bimbos.

if you got ripped off $100 and waited 3 hours in line, you shouldn't be surprised, considering the genre's artists basically tells you in advance that they don't give a crap.

kanye is a great artist like Picasso was a great computer engineer.

Posted by brandonmetal | November 24, 2010 1:33 PM

"1157 wasn't there. just watch videos and you'll see how good it was"

Yeah, 11:57 here and I was there dickhead and unlike you probably I got in for free. And still thought it was not a great show. You unfortunately are in the minority on this one. Most of the reviews around the net today from people who were there have not been good. Saying basically the same things i said. Even on here you do not have many people hyping the show. So fuck you and your know nothing ass.

Posted by Anonymous | November 24, 2010 1:33 PM

i do know more than a few stories of people who went to the door and tried getting someone from inside to convince staff to let them in for free. and it worked. i'm damn near tempted to post their names, but the real problem seems to be with how the venue ran the event, or how kanye's management dictated the schedule and was a good few hours behind. (and i'll preface that with i like bowery, and have never had an issue with staff there before).

Posted by Anonymous | November 24, 2010 1:46 PM

@brandonmetal - umadbro? have you listened to Kanye at all before you ranted from your cubical in Billyburg? its not bitches and bling.

Posted by Anonymous | November 24, 2010 2:39 PM

Bowery Presents,

Last night's Kanye show was easily the worst run event I have ever seen. The true fans who waited 3+ hours to get in had no clue where to go or what to do, while the VIPs casually strolled in seconds before the show started.

The staff was horrendous. They did not answer our questions, they did not make sure people were not cutting the line, and they told us that everyone would get in before the show started. I was assured of this at least 5 times, yet I missed the first 3 songs of the show. Not only were VIP let into the ballroom, but many people asking their friends who were watching the door got let in.

We were told the doors would open at 10 and Kanye would start at 11. I got in at 1:05, and Kanye had started at 1. I can't tell you the feeling I had to hear the opening notes while I wait in the cold. It was a slap in the face to everyone who waited patiently. This is extremely unfair and if I had known this I would not have paid 10 cents to get in, nevermind a hundred bucks.

Not only did the show start late, but it started without many of the fans, and the staff did absolutely nothing to help. In fact, they were rude and completely dumfounded as to what they should do next. I want my money back and will not stop contacting Bowery until it is paid back.

Sincerely,

Joe (a true fan who got royally screwed out of $106)

The worst thing about kanye west is the way he prepares his hummus. The consistency is way too thick and sticks to the roof if your mouth. The man has very poor MC skills but his cooking is far far worse.

-sliced watermelon
-grape soda
-malt liquer
-newport 100's
-fried chicken
-collard greens
-and hummus.

Posted by Anonymous | November 24, 2010 3:38 PM

I'm sorry for the people that shelled out $100+ dollars to get into this thing, but you have to realize: it's not about you. It's about the VIPs, the press (uh, take a look at Pitchfork's write-up/novella), and Kanye. By the ego, for the ego.

Posted by Anonymous | November 24, 2010 3:57 PM

>>Just because a lot of losers like him doesn't mean he doesn't suck horribly.
A lot of people watch American Idol too. Does that mean it is good music?

not the most eloquent way to approach it, but it makes the point perfectly. bush was president for two terms also. lowest common denom. always wins.

3:57 gets it. It's not about "fans" or "true fans." If you do not understand this, you are naive.

Posted by Anonymous | November 24, 2010 4:16 PM

if it was a press / private / no fans event, they shouldn't have put tickets on sale. especially not $106. it's that simple.

Posted by Anonymous | November 24, 2010 4:27 PM

^^^ Think about it, you shelled out $106 for this monstrosity. You get no sympathy. You are a moron and you deserved what you got. Simple as that.

Posted by Anonymous | November 24, 2010 4:31 PM

and the thing is, did the venue really need the extra $106 a head from a few folks? i'm sure kanye and the label could've shelled over whatever was necessary to support the costs.

the whole thing is disgusting.

I waited on line for 3+ hours. Got in halfway through the set. I love Kanye West, but this was an awful experience.

I would have rather seen him at MSG.

"Just because a lot of losers like him doesn't mean he doesn't suck horribly."

thats fine so long as you realize it goes both ways. Just because you hate him doesn't mean other people shouldn't think hes fantastic.

The two comments towards me are very typical of BV readers. I forgot that only Best Coast and Wavves are worth seeing nowadays.

Joe, If they were typical BV readers they would have mentioned hummus in their posts.

@ 8:35: "Just because you hate him doesn't mean other people shouldn't think hes fantastic."

Yes it does. Because he sucks. Total pop rap mainstream shit.

I was there. We waited 3 hours outside, but it was well worth it. There weren't many fans. The crowd mostly consisted of publicists and celebrities. Pretty cool.

show was amazing...

why would anyone who doesnt like kanye even bother posting here????

well worth the 3 hour wait.

Why you fools complainin? Brooklyn v got in without a tix yeuh yeuh

Posted by Anonymous | November 25, 2010 8:57 PM

so many clowns here raggin on kanye. when you see a legend at a small venue like bowery, there's no price on it, and there's no waiting time limit. 3 hours, 100 dollars, still a steal. and he was right about taylor. that biznitch never came out and said yo, leave kanye alone or that kanye cat aint so bad. still want to hate? well 600,000 people didnt hate this week. he's on top and he shared it with his real fans. so keep talkin posers. kanye forever

thats right, I forgot its the MAINSTREAM acts you hipsters hate. only the good bands play at 2 am in front of 7 19 year olds with their arms folded looking like their having the most miserable time. Somebody charges $100 for a show they automatically suck

Posted by Anonymous | November 25, 2010 9:37 PM

^ no. Just listen to his lyrics to determine that he sucks. That's what I do.

Posted by Anonymous | November 26, 2010 12:56 AM

"Have Bowery Presents followed up with an apology yet?"

for what?

Posted by Anonymous | November 26, 2010 1:50 PM

Hip Hop artists ALWAYS make their fans wait at least 2 hours later than they thought they would have to for them to get on stage. Anyone who goes to a show like this is a sucker... sorry.

This was not the best show of the year. But it could've been...

Posted by The Accidental G | November 26, 2010 3:24 PM

I was there, and I had sex with Rihanna. She was all wet on my Thing.

Posted by Anonymous | November 26, 2010 7:54 PM

I had 2 tickets to this but thought it would be a better use of my time to stay home and mash the chickpeas.
