Ut

"Ut originated from New York City's downtown No Wave scene in December 1978. The inheritors of the fertile collision between rock, free jazz and the avant garde that first manifested itself in the Velvet Underground, Ut soon became a serious force within the New York music scene." [Wikipedia]
Ut are playing some reunion shows. Their next one is at Maxwell's in Hoboken tonight (11/7). Their last, and first one, was at Issue Project Room Friday night (11/5). The pictures in this post are from that show, and they continue below...

This show was sick. You could tell they were rusty after twenty years; but, still, that only fueled more to the mystique of that No Wave ethos. Amazing performers, hope to see them again. Talk Normal opened for them and were awesome as usual.

I wish I had paid more attention to BV in recent weeks--I had no idea Ut was playing. Citybug, I think the band always sounded rusty. What are those women doing these days?

We need more bands like Ut in the world.

Will people PLEASE stop suggesting that the Velvet Underground was at all involved in free jazz music. Maybe cultural and pop icons, but their musicianship was hack-ish at best, and intellectually feeble compared the free jazz associated with the downtown scene.

Ahhh Regular Reader, I did not find out about Ut's reunion until I came across it in Last.fm after listening to Griller.

All three of them seem to be involved in music still; but, in smaller scenes. I hope Ut comes out again, seeing the young presence at that show - I expected myself to be the youngest person there but I was wrong - they can really build themselves a niche in the noise scene New York seems to be continually growing.

Wasn’t that free jazz pretty close to jamming metal?
